Why would the devs include this emote?

/ok, sorry, I'll be moving along now.
  2. So you thought it might be heat, but didn't actually check the heatsinks, fans and such because non-Co* operations is good?

Yep. Sounds like Co* is doing what it does best: Kill computers that aren't cooling right. You might want to actually do the heatsink/fan check and clean/fix if needed... but of course, that also means that I read all that right.

And what Tease said, of course, should that have been done.
  3. Oh... good one. Means the dual cpu detect isn't working with Win7, looks like...
  4. It would appear that nobody has an answer for you... or they'd have responded. You have a very weird issue. CoH Helper isn't giving the detail needed at this time... you need to post a full DXDiag log now.

Also, it sounds a *whole lot* like a CPU slow down, like it's getting too hot. Don't suppose that SpeedFan would work and get you some temps would it? I know you checked things, but perhaps the CPU cooler isn't seated or such... or maybe it's a messed up northbridge chip heatsink... just throwing things out there.

See, the thing is, the computer itself is slowing down to a crawl, it seems like. That doesn't indicate an issue with the video, it's a motherboard/cpu one. Or... perhaps it's a USB issue.

You are running a USB wireless. That could be part of the issue.

Your hijack this shows some extra stuff in it I'd take out/disable with MSConfig until I figured out which one it was:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HDAudDeck] C:\Program Files\VIA\VIAudioi\HDADeck\HDeck.exe 1

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [NVIDIA nTune] C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\nTune\nTuneCmd.exe resetprofile
    O4 - Startup: Trillian.lnk = C:\Program Files\Trillian\trillian.exe
    O23 - Service: C-DillaCdaC11BA - C-Dilla Ltd - C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\CDAC11BA.EXE
    O23 - Service: Java Quick Starter (JavaQuickStarterService) - Sun Microsystems, Inc. - C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jqs.exe
    O23 - Service: Performance Service (nTuneService) - NVIDIA - C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\nTune\nTuneService.exe
    O23 - Service: Update Center Service (UpdateCenterService) - NVIDIA - C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\System Update\UpdateCenterService.exe

I'd be finding another network solutions, preferably a wired connection and turning these off too:
O23 - Service: Broadcom Wireless LAN Tray Service (wltrysvc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\WLTRYSVC.EXE
    O23 - Service: WUSB54GSC - GEMTEKS - C:\Program Files\Linksys\WUSB54GSCv2\WLService.exe

That way, you can't blame the software... much. It's still software, after all, that the OS is and the program is.

    ---

On a little bit of a forum rules note, you do know that bumping isn't allowed, right? Might get you in a time out. I know you want your issue dealt with, and I don't know why, exactly, in this forum it's not allowed, but it's not allowed.

Not that I care, really, just figured I'd say it. Y'know... in case you didn't, in fact, know.
  5. Oh, I'm sure they get stupid stuff all the time...

/guilty of it myself... anyone say SG mode at Tailor?
  6. ISP issue
    Router issue

One of these is the problem... unless it's a software firewall that's confused about where you are, maybe.

I don't know how to track it down specifically, but get PingPlotter Freeware, and go find another post with that in it. It could also be Ping Plotter.

In a recent enough thread post, several server IPs are mentioned, use those to ping with in an unlimited, 1 second survey. Repeat for several of them. You may find you can't get to them, and that is the issue.

Don't worry if you get to Chicago and then the last couple don't work... they turn off pings at those servers, you're there.

Hope that gets you somewhere close to the answer.

Ok, I'll admit, I kind of read this thing wrong too, but seriously, it DOESN'T look fine. The total versus available physical is just plain messed up... your virtual versus your pagefile is not corresponding... there is a lot going sideways here.

Where the heck did you get this anyway? What program? Whatever it is, it's whack, and I can't trust it now.

Get thee a DXDiag log and post it, k?

  12. I posed a link to your tech specs above. About 3/4 the way down is the power supply is listed as a 250 watt. Assuming you've done nothing to the machine, that's what you have.

    http://www.xfxforce.com/en-us/produc.../8400GS.aspx#2

The specification tab shows that 300 watt is required for this card.
  13. w00t, I'm useful. Maybe they'll keep me.

  15. Well out of all them, the Acer certainly has the moxie to do it. Good card, good processor, good memory... it's not a bad deal, but I'm just not an Acer guy... the reviews seem positive though.
  16. 6200 vs 8400: Seems to be quite a bit of debate. The 8400 will have more features, but there is plenty of discussion googling it that the 6200 works better. Go figure.

re: too much power... I present you your own first post quote:
"radion 2600 256mb (something about a 28mb interface and media stuff and somehow she said the word TV programy thing in there with its extra stuff)"

So I would assume the answer to the power issue is 'no.', or they wouldn't have offered it as an option.

    ---

This is gonna sound a little snippy, but it's not. Sorry if you hear it that way:

MY decision, if we want to get into that, is do nothing to this machine... it's not worth the expenditure of money, time and effort... matter of fact, I'm kind of thinking I myself have taken too much time trying to help because it's just not the kind of machine I'd be running Co* with at all.

My decision is to buy another machine, because it's going to take too much to get this one to 'merely adequate' state.

So, at this point, you're second guessing yourself and me and probably anyone else who comes in, so you just need to get something and move on if you're bound and determined to do something. Whatever it is, good luck with it! I'm sure anything will be better than the GF2 you got now.

In other news, Mid_Forever has been seen posting in the
  18. Yes, the PCI isn't as fast a bus as the AGP, which will slow load times, and if it has to swap textures that will slow FPS a little here and there too.

And... the 2600 is supposedly the better of the two, so there ya go:
    http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/24...-upgrade-issue

I think your decision is now made...
  19. "CoX is most likely the most advanced game she will play"

And with that, you just defined the hardest thing the laptop will do. It is a punishing game to perform right. So, yeah, it does kinda need to be mid-high end, performance wise.

Asus/ asustek's website is jacked up. I found it, and it's not a SU3500, that's an intel chip number. it's an UX50 model:

    http://usa.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=5&a...amp;modelmenu=2

The G105 is a 9300 in effect. It'll play, but...

These CPUs aren't as fast as the other Asus offering, and the one you've picked is the slower of the two Core chips. It'll play, but, I think I'd be looking at number 2 first:

    ---

The other Asus... more jacked up web, here's a cached version from google:
    http://74.125.155.132/search?q=cache:TZs...=clnk&gl=us

It has the G102... about the same, probably less(?) than the G105 performance wise. The dual core CPU is good... provided you got the Core and not the Pentium. Oh, the Pentium would be ok, but Core is faster and cooler and less power used.

    Do. Not. Get. The. Celeron.

    ---

The HP is pretty ok. The Turion is good, probably a little more power used, but the 8200 graphics... meh. I do like HP lappies, but for this... eh... I'd like a little bit better video chip.

    ---

I'm assuming that price is an issue? Maybe you can help narrow things down:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/PowerS...amp;GASearch=3

You can pick all kinds of things that may help you decide what's good... for example, NVidia video cards of the x6xx or better mentality (hm... no G2xx series?), Intel Dual or quad cores of the Core or Pentium line, and 4 G of memory yields this:
    http://tinyurl.com/na575v (hadda make it small)

I'd be lookin' at this one:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834147995
'cause it's an HP, and they're my favorite current lappy maker.

However, the lowest priced Acer at $300 less:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834115539

would certainly do the job. I'm just not an Acer fan. Bad experiences.

Dunno if that helps... but in the three you picked? I would probably go with the second one, it has the better specs for CPU/GPU balancing. Even then, I'm still looking around.
  20. You do not have a PCI Express slot. Do not be confused. You *must* get an AGP slot, or a PCI (not PCI Express) card. I don't think they make a PCI that high. Be sure what you're getting.

PCI < AGP < PCI Express as far as performance goes, or so the idea is.

Only problem with getting any ATI card is that they seem to have more issues running Co*. Lots of tweaking. I'd never run one, and have limited information regarding them. However, check this chart out:

    http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/d...DMark06-v1.0.2,582.html

Granted it's from 2006, but it has the 6200 on it.

Your biggest issue is the power supply. It just hasn't got enough oomph. Be trying to haul a loaded tractor trailer with a scooter. The x1650 requires a bigger power supply.

The choices are just too thin. I don't think I'd bother unless i could get a higher wattage power supply for the unit, at which point, there are better choices such as a NVidia 6800 or 7600, and even ATI offerings.

However, given what ya got... I don't know. Anything will be better, but all of these are 'sub gaming' cards in the eyes of many enthusiasts for today's games... Given the pricing list at newegg.com for agp video cards... I *might* go for the 2600, but there's that ATI thing...

I dunno if that helps or not. The arena is too small for a great answer, IMO.
  21. Uninstall drivers, Driver Sweeper all the video card ones out, install drivers again. That should fix it.
  22. Give the IT department some pizza and beer... they'll hook ya up. Just explain it to them. And maybe send over a babe or two (or a stud or two... I'm not biased in any way, what do I know about the people in the IT department?) to help things along, and to deliver the pizza and beer.

Also, if you hear of anyone playing successfully (the game what's name shall not be mentioned) or other MMO, then you have a complaint that can be successfully wrangled through due to fairness issues.

Which means they'll stop the ports that (the game what's name shall not be mentioned) uses, or perhaps block the traffic, so none of yas can play, but hey, at least you got it to be fair...

/wouldn't take anything but a couple of router rules to allow the port from a certain block of ips... but that'd be not my call.

    Game of DOOM

Oh, and btw, here's Doom, the actual game:
    http://www.idsoftware.com/games/doom/doom3/

This is the game of City of Heroes. Just in case there was anyone confused by that.

No, even with that information, things do not look 'fine', at least in relation to Co* playing. A lower speed single core AMD, 1G memory, 8400GS... Yeah, it'll suck. Sorry. The game's moved on quite a bit since that was an uberbox. You could play on Pinnacle and still have lag. Believe me. I do know. I have a box like that.

And... that's not to say there's not some issue with your ISP's route to the servers that's also introducing issues.

Sounds more like you need to upgrade stuff and perform investigative work. Because the truth is... if it were a problem of global proportions, do you think these boards would be as quiet as they are, or the game as populated as it still is?
  24. houtex

    ATI or NVIDIA?

Since he asked, I will answer: Yes, jump back to NVidia and solve the problem correctly.

But then, I have banned ATI from my play book because of their flaky weirdness issues over the years, so there is that grain of salt to be taking with this advice... Plenty who are running ATI after figuring out the workarounds and such.
  25. The 4300 is a rather old machine. Specs:
    http://support.dell.com/support/edoc...cs.htm#1101572

The top of the line would have been a 2.0Ghz P4 single core at 400Mhz FSB, 1MB memory maximum, and a 250watt power supply. This last being the death knell for any substantial video card upgrading. Well, that and the AGP video card slot.

My money would be going toward a new computer with a dual core CPU, 4G of memory and a nice 9600, 260, 9800 something like that.

However, if you are bound and determined to use that Dell freebie, then the 8400 is the slam dunk. I'm going to assume (which we all know what can happen with that) that the 8400 will be ok with the rather small 250 watt power supply, or Dell wouldn't offer it to you... it takes up to 38 watts to run it, so I'd guess it'll be ok... ish.

Otherwise, the 6200, because in my opinion, switching from NVidia to any other brand wouldn't be a great idea. You'll still have to upgrade/change the drivers, but it's a little easier when you don't change brands.

Of course, the other problem is the CPU. Single core... and which speed do you have? You're going to need every bit of the 2.0Ghz P4... if you don't have that one... I'm not terribly sure I'd bother spending the money/'money' on the machine for Co* these days.

Dunno if that helps, but there ya go. Good luck!
