Just for the record, Hijack This doesn't tell you anything is wrong. So I'm guessing you thought it did, or you went through it yourself? Just curious.

If all that fails, network cards are still pretty cheap. Disable or remove the one you have, and just replace it.

I agree with the both of you. I'll edit the above to add that.

Here's the change notes:
Ok, the notes are I completely rewrote it, so you'll just have to reread it with that request added and the formatting changed to reflect that particular need. I think it's more better now. And I can add points easier too, so there's that. Yay. -
Has anyone mentioned the CoHHelper and Hijack this programs yet? I think they may be needed to help solve this issue.

1) That got through the filter? Interesting.
2) I may be a fargin' corksoaking icehole sumanumbatch, but I am no bastidge, I was legitimate.
And what Sharker_Quint said. So with that in mind, here's what to do: Go get thee PingPlotter Freeware. Find a post somewhere in here with the IP addresses... you can search for PingPlotter (or Ping Plotter) and it'll show up. Ping plot those addresses with unlimited 1 second repeats with 10 samples, and you will probably find a spiked server in the list. That server is likely your issue. If you can post a screenie of the PingPlotter result that'd be keen. Even if it's to say 'SEE? Not my path, you bastidges"
/Love to read, btw.

Sounds like your Java is woefully screwed up. Go to www.java.com and get it reinstalled. You *may* want to go to the Add/Remove Programs and deinstall *all* copies of Java and then go get installed again... that's what I've been doing for a while now. Well, ok, I haven't been doing it on your computer, I'll admit that, but the ones I work on at work and stuff.
As to your Hijack This log... You can use MSConfig to turn some things off, if you like... start, run, MSConfig. Uncheck what you don't need in the Startup and Services tab. In the Services tab, check ON the "don't show Microsoft" selection at the bottom. Finish the changes, tell it ok, and reboot.
These are probably what I'd be taking out for testing, and putting back one by one as I chose for 'need' purposes.

I am not a fan of the Norton suites, I'd probably be deinstalling that and getting AVG or AntiVir instead.
Also you got that MagicJack, interesting. How's that work for ya? Just curious. Read up on it real quick here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MagicJack
As it's using your computer, it's *possible* that it's giving you some headaches... It's possible that everything else thrown at the computer as possibles might not be the thing until you try taking this out. I wouldn't think a VoIP service would suck up too much bandwidth, but it's possible.
If you can't get the CohHelper to work, post up a DxDiag log, which though long, will get us the machine information we need... may be important to the problem. -
I have nothing to add to this until logs and such, but until then...

Definitely need AntiMalware as stated before, download, update, and FULL SCAN. Do whatever the nice program says to do after.
And... not to be too paranoid... I might be changing passwords **AFTER** I got rid of these things on all bank, credit card, game, facebook, email...etc... whatever you type in accounts and passwords on this computer with.

Now then:
Using MSConfig (Start, Run, MSConfig) You can hit the Startup and Service tabs to find and uncheck different programs to see if they help your situation, and if so, and they don't interfere with other normal operations of the computer, you can leave them off.

But I don't know if it's legit or not. Supposed to be a windows dll... I'm not saying it's right, but I ain't sayin' it's wrong... it's just weird, I think.
Also for conversational purposes... Sonic, do you have remnants of Symantec Norton AntiVirus or is it that you have Winfax or some other Symantec Product? If not, you might want to also uninstall Live Update and/or any Symantec listed in the Add/Remove programs list, as it's cluttering up things too. I left them out of the MSConfig list because I don't know if they're legitimate for your needs.
And finally... Do you have both an Epson and an HP printer? If so, fine, no further action. If, however, one of them is no longer in the mix, you need to uninstall those as well from the Add/Remove programs list.
Sorry, Programs and Features list. That is so... STUPID... of Microsoft.
/"I know engineers. They love to change things." - Dr. Leonard McCoy, Chief Medical Officer, USS Enterprise NCC-1701, Star Trek: The Motion Picture -
I can haz ur stuffs?
Now, to be serious:
I hate to say this, but the reality is this: Dual core. 2-4G of memory. 500 Watt Power supply that *weighs* like it. NVidia video solution, preferably the 8xxx series and up, preferably of the x6xx or x6x nomenclature or above. Clean system, updated drivers, perhaps one or two revs behind current, depending on situation.
In particular: Intel dual core CPU. 4G of Kingston memory. Gigabyte motherboard with appropriate INTEL chipset. NVidia 9600 or better video card. And the Power Supply is usually CoolerMaster or Thermaltake with the 120MM fans in them, hefty little beasts.
And a clean install of Vista. Or XP, whatever. Service Packed to latest, and all unneeded programs of *any* type disabled/deinstalled.
Finally, Comcast Houston Cable Internet. I pay extra for having it, and I won't give it up easily, because I rarely, if ever, have issues.
I don't know what happened in your machine/your situation, and I'm sorry to see ya go, but it's a shame that Co* is so demanding... But it's why I use the quality, known good stuff I do, because I'm not going to chase my tail trying to use something else. I have been good for 5 years straight, with only the global issues that others have being the ONLY issues I've dealt with.
Again, sorry to see ya go. Take care, we'll see ya sometime else. -
Perhaps you could tell us how much wattage your power supply is rated for? That'd help us out a little...
-
So if one or two or 10 or 100 of you have issues out of thousands, then it's on NCSoft's side to fix it. Right, makes perfect sense to me.
/gonna hit 'eject' button now.
//but not before I ask "so what is the threshold number anyway? I'm understandably curious..." -
Kingtex, Co* is the program I use to *KILL COMPUTERS* for testing purposes. If it doesn't work for 20 minutes, then the computer itself is no good.
Co* is not like (the game what's name shall not be mentioned), Crysis, L4D, any of those. It will *KILL YOUR COMPUTER* if it's not up to snuff.
Co* works fine in Vista. I'm living proof, I only use Co* on Vista at home now (unless i'm forced to use my lappy, then it's Windows 2000... old laptop. For reference, single core P4 2.0G 1M ram, Geforce MX440 Go 32MB... and yes it *still* works. I only use one character called "Notebook Warrior" on that one because of the GUI on it is smaller than my home one.)
That being said, the amount of hurt that Co* is performing on your CPU, memory, mainboard, and yes, the pitiful little Intel Express chip for video, is massive. To give you perspective, you have a fully loaded semi tractor trailer for everything else in the computer... and are ready to haul it all... but the engine? That'd be your video card in this case... it's a 4 cylinder Escort motor from the 80s. Pretty much not going to haul that load... if it does, it's not long till it overheats.
THAT being said, the Intel Express does work... and it's more about turning down the graphics to a playable level. After that, it's heat. Check ALL vents, and any fans. Prop the back of the computer so it's off the table (I have to do that will my Dell lappy, it gets too hot otherwise and starts to shut down while playing Co*)
If you're playing it and have *any* ports covered, or the heat sinks are clogged with dust (can 'o air time) or it's getting heat soaked from being on the table, all these are the most likely given your description... but not the absolute answer.
And if you can't figure out what's wrong with your computer (because that's what the problem is, I'm sorry to say), then yes, with that computer, it may be at a point of what is "the point of playing this game." You need to get a better laptop for Co*, honestly... but that doesn't mean it can't work on your computer. You just gotta do your homework to make it happen.
And after all *THAT*... post up a Hijack This log Maybe there's something else we can help to get you that little bit that makes it all work... No promises, k? -
Hey, when you're really upset at them for pointing out that moon people don't look like Carnies, then perma-stun is the answer. I'm down with that.

Proposal for circumstantial bumping rules (to be hopefully approved by guys/gals/moderators):
While bumping of topics is *generally* not allowed, in certain circumstances, it may be the only way to resolve a question which has gotten pushed down the list of topics. If you are a poster who's needs were not yet addressed, in that case only, please wait *3 days or more* before bumping a topic, but ONLY if you're not getting any help.
The rules for this circumstance will be as follows:
1) Bumping isn't allowed if the topic has been resolved.
2) DO NOT post another topic on your same situation, i.e. start another thread that is really a continuation of the old one, USE THE OLD ONE. It's so we don't get lost regarding what's happened in your situation and can continue on the 'right path' to getting you fixed up.
3) DO NOT bump without first posting any information requested by the other forum members, such as the logs from CoHHelper, HiJackThis (information about which can be found in the 'Read This' link below), computer information, or other needed info, *no matter* how irritating it may personally be to you. We are not mind readers. Thank you for understanding.
4) Bump ONLY if you have posted the information, THEN 3 days or more have passed. We're working on it... probably.
We thank you for your attention in this matter, and look forward to serving you!
Thank you,
The Management*

There. Now, on to the full version and explanation.
Recently couple of threads were bumped by the original posters due to total lack of responses. This was after several days they'd waited, and their threads were pushed down the stack.
Of course, the immediate response wasn't "Oh, well, here, this is what you do, here's the fix for that, etc.", no sir/madam, it was "No Bumping."
Really, y'all? That's all we're gonna do when this comes up? Consider the following:
1) Person is looking for help.
2) Person's thread is legitimate, but for some reason, nobody posts anything to help at all. The why of that is unknown. Perhaps we're lazy or something, or missed it somehow. In any case...
3) ...this status remains for 3 days or more...
4) ... and person still needs help... so they bump.
And is met by "No Bumping." Nice. Not that I'm attacking anyone, I was guilty of it myself recently, although I put that at the end of my "well you can try this" post after the bump... and was told by the OP "So what was I supposed to do since I also can't start a new thread on the same thing?"
Great question! What *does* the person do? The original post is still valid, the person needs help... and short of someone coming in and saying "Guess we don't know, look elsewhere, sorry, good luck!" that thread gets pushed down the stack and disappears. Way to go helpful forumites.
But the person still needs help on the original problem. There are TWO forum rules that are a problem in this case:
1) No bumping... this we know, obviously.
2) No new posts when you have an old one on the same subject. This gets cited less as the bumping is what usually happens.
After considering these cases in recent times, I am now fine with a *legitimate* bump if a *sufficient* amount of time has passed. Say, oh, 3 days or more? Because woe be the person who decided to post a new topic, and some forum rules enforcer came in and stomped that person for that... that's never a good idea, for a lot of good reasons, mainly for continuity of the topic.
So... what say you guys/gals/moderators? Kosher or totally off base? I await your discussion. Thank you for your consideration about this unique situation.
/* - "The Management" implies, as of this writing, nobody here, it's not approved yet. -
What ElectroHawk said. You may have to open the case up if it's a Beige Box Special and read stuff on the motherboard. I would be attempting to install Vista, myself.
Don't worry about the thread bump. It's a catch 22 here, and they won't kill you for it. I'm going to start another thread about this so I don't pollute this one with cross topic, but it's fine, you waited 4 days.
Tease, I am with you 'bout forum rules, of course, but there are circumstances, and that whole other "don't post multiple threads about same topic" issue is also not allowed... so what's Hollows to have done? *shrugs shoulders* -
They are. A 285 would rock so hard, if your CPU could keep up, too. And you don't have the power supply for them. Hence the reason they don't show up on the list.
Believe it, Wolf speaks truth on your options.
Now re: What's ATX, it's simply a standard for computers for various components and mounting in the chassis. In this case, it means a power supply you can get off the shelf at Frys or whatever to replace your current one. Allegedly. Dells are weird, please research and/or consult before pulling the trigger on any power supply upgrade, because you WILL KILL YOUR COMPUTER if the wiring is wrong on the motherboard.
But if you did, and got a hefty enough wattage power supply, the world is your oyster in regards to picking a video card, instead of a crusty clam of limitation.
/nothing against clams, but they don't have pearls. -

It looks like all servers are centralized in Chicago.

They're not. There are two NCSoft co-loc facilities for the CoX servers. They are in California and Virginia.

Then why do all pings to the servers wind up in Chicago when running a PingPlotter? That makes no sense to me... sounds counter productive... unless the server list is messed up in the Network Tool... -
That's not a bug, IMO, it's a feature. There are various annoying characters in game I've met that'd be fun to do with...

C Drive: (Maxtor 6Y080L0) 5219MB out of 72645MB (7%) free
Ok, you have an "80" gig drive. On that, you are storing "74" gig of data. This data is in the form of the OS, Programs of various import, support files for these, and all the data you personally have put on the computer.
Co* itself, raw, no additions like screenshots and such, is 2G in size. The OS is likely about that. Various programs and support files can range from a few K to 1G or so... Then there's any music, videos, pictures, documents... Oh, and temp files. Those are fun.
Basically, you yourself are the ONLY person who knows what to keep and what not to. Where the data is stored is a 'you only' thing.
So, if you are uncomfortable with the idea of deleting things, a person who isn't uncomfortable is required, with your input as to what needs to be kept and what doesn't. And in terms of kept, it might be on an external hard drive to keep it there instead of the main drive, or burned to CD/DVDs.... whatever you can to get the room on the C drive.
The other approach is to get another, much larger hard drive (that the system can recognize, some have limits), clone the C: to that new drive using Ghost or some such, and then you'll have whatever size the hard drive is -74G of space. So if you got a 500G drive to work, then you'd have "418"G of space, or 4/5 of the drive and change.
Hope that helps.
/please note the "xx"G of sizes has to do with the whole 1024 vs 1000 thing with hard drives. Which is why your 80G drive has only 74G of storage as far as the OS is concerned. -
I almost thunked out of my chair when I saw it.

Depending on time of day, amount of traffic being demanded from the download server, if ISP throttling is taking place (and not, by default, your ISP specifically), if one or more of the routers along the way to the download server is messed up, if your router is having a bad day (it seriously happens), if you have bad cables or interference, or if your wireless is having issues, solar flares, pandimensional beings, fate...
In other words, a litany of items can cause it. Mainly, it's the first 4. There's another thread where Ping Plotter is recommended to determine if there is a problem with the path between you and the download server, do a search for that, 'cause I never remember where it is...
Secondly, if you're on a service that's bandwidth dependent and sharing (like a really heavily used cable modem branch, or a satellite connection) that could be throttling back to prevent the stream of data. They do that. Who's your ISP, and what kind of connection is it?
Finally, it could be your computer, and so I ask what we all do: CoH Helper and Hijack This logs. You can click 'Read This' below and find information on how to do that. -
It looks like all servers are centralized in Chicago. Check the Ping Plotter results, you'll see they all go there... well, not the EU ones, they come from France. Like Beldar, Primat and Connie
Unless you can find different, of course. So far that's what I've been finding... -
Just to help on this, the reason the 9500 is the highest they offer is because of your power supply, do not try to go higher unless you change the power supply to a higher wattage model. If you were to get a, oh, 550 watt power supply, then you could, possibly, get any NVidia card you'd care to.
Googling about seems to indicate that model Dell can take any standard ATX power supply, so you have more options if you desire... and if you do, get an x6xx or x6x or better card, ok?
