I would strongly consider taking at least one of the pulse rifle powers, if not two. The one I don't like it the photon grenade, it doesn't stun nearly enough for my taste.
Also consider taking Aid other from the medicine pool to boost your healing powers even more. Acid mortar at level 10 and FFG at level 16.
I won't worry about Leadership just yet. You don't have anything to stack them with, really. Maneuvers and 14 (for FFG later) and Tactics at 18 (for the 3rd bot) is a good plan, imo.
Actually that only gives you one free power, at 8. Maybe push Leadership back to level 20?
Level 8 : Pulse Rifle Burst
Level 10: Acid Mortar
Level 12: Protector Bot
Level 14: Aid Other
Level 16: FFG
Level 18: Maneuvers
Level 20: Tactics
That looks ok to me. -
Quote:I realize what you said, but if you stick all of them onto the same server(s) segregated from all (or practically all) of the paying customers, what do you think you've just created?
-A newbie world
specifically in this case a newbie world that you leave a few unlucky paid players to survive in.
See I think it would be a benefit for existing players to have fresh faces on a low-pop server. And I didn't say this but I'm also thinking that it would be easy to use the top (bottom?) four or so low-pop servers, so it just would fill them up naturally. You've got several low pop servers, why not let the new folks fill them up?
What I would definitely do is prevent a bunch on unpaid folks from impacting an already highly impacted server, like Virtue and Freedom.
Quote:For instance a free account would not have access to (just off the top of my head):
Cim, Ouro, PI, Praetoria, Grandville, Pocket D, AE, the ability to build/edit supergroups (but could be part of one), and who knows what else.
Allow all zones and contacts normally available. Bases and AE should be available too, it's a way for new folks to "invest" themselves in the game.
Restrict on: make IOs unavailable (this game's not balanced around IOs anyway, freebies can get by fine on SOs), make an Inf cap, restrict storage for salvage slightly (it's already pretty restricted, can't really go too much more), and probably restrict the effects of badges (no accolades), day jobs, and some temp powers, and I'd prevent freebies from gaining (or maybe just using) Merits of any kind.
Just my 2 inf. -
-
Quote:And then what happens if they decide (despite practically no compelling reason to do so under your model) to upgrade their account. Do they then get free transfers off of freebie world, or are their original characters stuck there unless they pay even more for a transfer?
What I'm saying is DON'T make a newbie world for them. Just use one of the existing low-pop servers. Hence, the existence of high level players to give them advice and look up to and all that. -
Just a minor idea against server merges:
First Dungeons and Dragons Online and now Everquest 2 have announced free to play mode, where most of the game is available to new players free of charge.
Let's supposed eventually CoH chooses to go the same route. What better place to put free to play newbies than a low population server? The hardware is there and not being used, a flood of newbies all the same level will create an environment where they can all team together, and there's still a few high level players who can act as mentors and inspiration to the newer players. Win-win I think.
Free-to-play seems to be the coming thing, so keeping a low pop server rather than merging seems better than having a newbie island somewhere where players don't get the full game or the best experience. Low pop servers seem the ideal alternative. -

Quote:Roll an traps/ar defender and play it like a blaster. Problem solved. Like others have stated the job of a traps defender is to make stuff die. If you want to keep others from getting hurt try cold domination. No heal powers but you won't need it.
I would agree with the above.
I had a little (level 12?) Dev/AR defender and I played him like a Corruptor. Lots of fun too. Keeping people upright wasn't my (primary) job. I debuffed, tossed some damage around, and tried to keep a few enemies distracted with my aggro. The advice about covering the tanker (or some one else, I guess, if they need it) with FFG is good.
Just toe bomb and have fun, nothing else you can do. -
Green eggs and HAM, VAM-I-am?
And I would eat them in a boat.
And I would eat them with a goat...
And I will eat them in the rain.
And in the dark. And on a train.
And in a car. And in a tree.
They are so good, so good, you see! -
I haven't worked out all the details, but I've been thinking about this on my own.
Mace/Invul brute.
Dark/Rad corruptor.
All the goodness of Mace/Invul with all the benefits of a Dark/ offense, plus /Rad to cut your enemies down to size. What would be not to like?
My personal opinion on teaming brutes is that they should take Taunt. Two taunts are better than one, and the ranged Taunt is really too good to pass up. If you really must, make one solo build that skips it, but I personally don't see this as a priority. Skip your travel power and make do with jet packs if you must skip something. -
I usually hot key this for convenience:
/bind control+F12 petcomall dismiss
if I managed to spell that all correctly. -
Quote:Wow you guys are absolutely fantastic! I appreciate the direct and honest replies.
And yes, since I have come from Everquest, and then WoW, my mindset might be a little more focused on a specific job (i.e. healing). It is refreshing to find out that CoH is very different in that regard.
No AT in this game is a "healer." Even Defenders are not healers. We're all hybrids that can do much more than just one thing.
Some power sets & combinations tend to be more of one thing than others. Empathy defenders tend to be more oriented towards healing and buffing than other sets, but the secondary figures in there too. Stone Tankers tend to be more oriented towards tanking than other combos, but they can still do more, and often do.
You class is oriented heavily towards control. And you can also heal/buff pretty good. I'd go with stuff in that order. Control mobs to prevent damage, and then add a bit of healing to soak up any damage that gets through. Drop in damage where it's needed. Buff the folks who seem to need it most. It'll keep you busy.
Also be aware play styles change depending on team size, enemy types and map. Solo or small teams you should probably concentrate more on control and damage, putting enemies down and healing a little to reduce down time. Larger teams you want to buff more, let other do damage and tank, and focus on mass control and controlling bosses and hard/dangerous targets.
I have only one little Mind/Emp 'troller, so I can't really offer any brilliant insights into Plant/Emp, but just be aware than you often have to think as you play, and try to adapt your AT to what the enemies and your team are doing. Just trying to do the same thing all the time is going to not work at least sometimes. -
Quote:Hello and welcome. Here's a link to the best source of City of Heroes/Villains info out there. Enjoy yourself!
Welcome and QFT. Paragon Wiki is an excellent resource.
However the best source of CoH/V information is probably these forums. We're a friendly bunch, much nicer than many other communities, and you can almost always questions answered here. Sometimes we go off on a tangent, but hey, that's life for ya.
So feel free to post up any additional q's you might have. -

Quote:What I'm talking about is the tracking of teammates your client does when on teams. Yes, it's passed through the server, but it's still messaging from one client to the other.
This is a good idea too. Isn't there a command for sending less buff information? I seem to remember somewhere around Issue 12, they improved the buff display but also sent more info, causing some people on modems to experience problems. And I thought they put a way to throttle that info back. Anyone remember what it was? I'd like to try it next time I have issues.
I don't have a player info window open, and I don't have combat attributes window for a player open. I do monitor about 4 of my own attributes, and I do have the expanded team buff display open (all the little buff icons next to the team window).
Good thoughts all, thanks again for helping me out on this. Hopefully the problems will stay away but if they come back I have some more things to try out on them. -
Quote:What sort of plan do you have with AT&T? Hopefully it's at least broadband. Also, are you using a wireless connection
Yes, ADSL. I normally average a little over 1 M bit/s on large downloads, in the 140k bytes/s range.
I'm using a wireless router. I wonder if there's a general network/download test I could use when I'm having problems to test my connection. -
Thanks for all the ideas guys, this is really helping.
I was on Virtue today (about 12 noon PDT) and things were quite smooth. I joined a team for some paper mishes and had no problems. We had 5 folks and 3 masterminds at one point so things where pretty heavily loaded. No problems.
It's a bit cooler out right now that it has been. I wonder if there's an over-heated piece of equipment on the ISP side that causing problems.
This is a good idea, I'll try it next time I'm having issues. If nothing else, if there is an malfunctioning piece of equipment on the ISP side, it'll give me a chance to connect through to some other machine while someone else gets the bad one.
Quote:also, try to free up space on your hard drive. then do a disc clean up and defrag.
I did recently run CCleaner and two virus checkers (Super-Antispyware and SpyBot Search and Destroy), just in case. No real issues found. -
And finally:
When I do see rubberbanding, I also see very high error rates on the /netgraph display. I'd have to look again to be sure (this was last night, going from memory) but I recall very large numbers of duplicate packets, as well as high numbers of retransmits and lost packets showing up as soon as the problems started. -
Oh yes, wanted to add:
Last night on Virtue, I was messing around by myself. I had a few lag spikes, but things were looking ok.
So I joined a team that was advertising in Sharkhead, and my connection immediately when to heck, and less nice places. Yellow lag spikes everywhere, and rubberbanding too.
Note this is 100% network. The lag was so bad I never joined them inside a mish, so there was no additional load on the graphics card. I was still solo outside in Sharkhead, minding my own business, but the network connection suddenly went to heck.
So, is there a potential problem with the teaming code on the server?
My problems started only recently, say about 2 to 3 weeks, and I can't remember if there was a server patch around the same time. But it was a bit suspicious that I was fine solo, but as soon as a joined a team, the connection immediately became less stable, even though there was no other changes (still solo in Shark, for ex.). -
Which has been working fine for nearly 3 years.
Problems started only recently.
I noticed my video drivers were old too. I think I tried to upgrade, but these drivers are the most recent supported by my system. The general drivers from nVidia, even the laptop ones, didn't work for me and I had to downgrade to get a functioning system again. -
Hey all,
I've got some network lag issues. I rubberband around like crazy when I move, and my attacks and other key presses are serverly delayed.
It can take a full second or two before the client recognizes a key press like an attack and executes it.
Movement keys (WASD) seem to repond immediately, though like I say I have rather huge amounts of rubberbanding.
Any idea how I can trouble shoot this? I think it's my ISP, because other on the same server don't always report the same problems I'm having. But I going to need to be able to show problems in my ISP (which is ATT on the west coast) in order get them to maybe do something.
My ping in /netgraph seems ok, around 140~ ms. The netgraph looks ok too, although when things are really bad I'll see yellow or even red spikes in the graph. I have some duplicates and retransmits in the /netgraph display, although usually it seems to be a low number.
My network seems to be a bit laggy overall, including HTTP and downloading, but it might be possible to see issues with some sort of general network test. Any ideas where I could get one?
Other ideas too what I could try would be useful.
I tried the "CoH Support Tool" but it's not where the FAQ says it is.
Here's the basic output of the COH Helper program.

Quote:(I deleted a bots/FF mastermind twice before making finally him into a bots/traps...have never looked back. FF is incredibly boring and I recommend it only for extreme tankerminding.)
Just to defend Bots/FF, which I love, I find Bots/FF to be an extremely fun and effective *teaming* build that can also solo effectively. Yes, it's slow solo, but easy and safe.
On a team, it'll turn the team into a monster as you practically prevent all damage. And its "low maintenance" nature means you can concentrate on managing a large group of pets, teammates and enemies effectively without being overwhelmed.
I also have a Thugs/Traps which I agree is more interesting to solo. I just don't solo Bots/FF as much, I look for big teams. -
Quote:You realize of course, that Fire Blast has some of the best single target damage of any of the sets right? It's single target damage is better then Ice's.
Just because it has very good AoEs, doesn't mean you have to spam them every fight. Flares, Fireblast and Blaze are incredibly good single target damage.
This was (is) one of my very first characters in CoH. I only took the AoE's, because I figured that's what Fire was suppose to do. And there's a lot of good stuff in /Dark too, so that made the single target in Fire even more skippable. So I was definitely huffing and puffing each fight, because AoE (and Fire Blast) were my only options.
Looking at City of Data, I see your point. I may have to rebuild into something more balanced. -
Quote:Also would like to add that this Corr will be Solo all the time and running story arcs instead of PLing at AE or Teaming.
I have a Dark Blast/Pain Dom corr that's decent to solo. Dark Blast gives you some nice AoEs that also debuff, and /Pain gives you some ways to boost your damage output even if you only have one teammate. Dark Blast also has a self-heal, which is also nice when solo.
The trick to Dark/Pain was to maintain two builds, one for solo and one for teaming. Teaming: take everything from Pain and only the real choice powers from Dark, like Tenebrous Tentacles and Night Fall.
Solo build: take most everything from Dark Blast, and skip far more of the /Pain powers. Take enough from /Pain so you can still help a teammate when you're just duoing. (After the 4th person on the team, you should probably shift to your team build.)
The problem with Fire Blast is it's AoE heavy, and I found myself huffing and puffing after every three man fight solo. You might be able to set the difficulty to -1x4 or something and really clean up, but that's speculation. I haven't tried it.
I also found that Ice Blast on a corr is a nice balanced primary, with good single target, decent AoE, a little control and decent performance on teams and solo. Pair it with anything you like.
One thing, a Tenebrous Tentacles boosted with Share Pain on a big spawn will basically cause you to suck an alpha if you don't have a brute or someone else that's taunting constantly (either with Taunt/Confront/Provoke or has a really good taunt aura). Beware of this on big teams before you get all excited and start dishing big damage out left and right. -
Quote:edit: Seems enforced morale stops working while his domination bar is full. Not sure why, but at least now I know what's causing it.
This bit sounds vaguely familiar. I think there's some things that don't work when the domination bar is full. You might want to ask on the Dom forum about this, they might know more.
