  1. I'd also like some comment on the statement "the content is just the same four missions over and over again."

If you read the thread I linked to, I basically agreed with him. I said "I don't think I've done anything but casual PUGs and TFs since level 30." That wasn't meant to agree with him, I was trying to say the game is easily playable by casual players. But in retrospect one of the reasons WHY I don't do most of the level 30+ content is because it's pretty banal. (Note: I also play red side mostly. I haven't tried most 30+ content blue side.)

I do think we also need to differentiate leveling from IOs. For me, IOs don't add a lot until AFTER I get to level 50 and start slotting. (Some IOs are useful at lower levels, but I find myself waiting until 50 for many of the IO sets so I can get the best bonus.)

Yes, my level 50 Fortunata is a LOT more powerful that she was at level 30. But that's after IOing her out at 50. The actual process of leveling form 30 to 50 was pretty much just busy work, it didn't by itself add much to the character.

In contrast, my level 50 Mastermind is not a lot more powerful than she was at level 32, even after considering the IOs I added (which admittedly is not a ton).
  2. I posted a little announcement about the Going Rogue sale on a gaming site I frequent. I got some interesting feedback from some non-CoH players.

In particular, one of the long time posters there talked about how he didn't like CoH's leveling progression. Since XP smoothing was mentioned specifically in the last dev interview over at Massively, I thought some of you folks might be want to debate the leveling progressing here, as a way of providing feedback to the devs.

This was the comment that I found most telling:

    Quote:
Against same level mobs, how much more powerful was your character at level 50 than it was at level 32? My thesis was not that CoH is grindy (which it is, but that's because the content is so similar rather than due to the time it takes to level which is not insignificant and is much higher than [competing products] or any other modern MMO that is built with endgame progression as it's major focus for retention), but that the character progression is very slow and stagnate due to the extremely steep soft cap on enhancements. Basically, I felt like I only really got a level every OTHER level after level 32 because I had already capped out most powers on the important enhancements. For a few levels up to your 40s this isn't true, and there are a handful of late game powers than need enhancements, but everyone gets their bread and butter skills maxed out and has very little impact from many of the enhancement reward levels past level 32.

Simply getting levels at a reasonable pace doesn't mean anything if every other level feels like you don't get anything from it.
BTW, if you go to the site to add your own comments, please be nice. While things can get opinionated, they're generally good folk there.

    The thread in question:
    http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=143992

So, agree or disagree? CoH is "grindy" because not a lot happens in between level 32 and 50, and because the missions are basically the same four missions repeated over and over.
  3. Make sure you:

    1. Have "Hide Recipes Missing Ingredients" unchecked. If you have this checked and you don't have sufficient merits to buy the recipe, you won't see the recipe at all.

    2. Are looking in the right level range. There's a level slider at the top of the dialog. If it's at 50 and the recipe in question maxes out at 40 or 30, then you won't see the recipe. This is kinda pernicious design, imo, but that's the way it works.

  5. I have both a 50+1 Mastermind and a 50+1 Fortunata. I'd go the crab. Masterminds are strong in the mid 30's and 40's, but they can be a pain on some of the tough TFs like Apex and LRSF. With enough level difference, your pets die pretty quick, even for something like Bots/FF, which is my MM.

The Fort is just tons easier. I don't have to wait for pets to catch up when I move. I can run at SS or fly to a turret and my pets don't aggro everything on the map trying to catch me. It's just much easier being so self contained.

I still love my MM as it was my first 50, but not having to deal with pets is much easier. I can't say specifically about the Crab, I don't see why it wouldn't be as strong as the Fort though.

    Power Duos

I agree with everything said above. There are lots of great combos in CoH.

One combo I did not see however, that I haven't tried but I think would work very well, is two masterminds. Two Thugs/ especially would work well, and then varying the secondaries a bit, like /Traps and /Dark Miasma, would produce an especially strong combination. But almost any combo would work.

Don't forget to take Leadership and you're off to the races.

    Best Final Toon

Mastermind would definitely be different, and they're relatively easy to solo.

I was going to say Fortunata. Two toons in one, and once you get Confuse + Mask Presence soloing is a breeze. Not that your little claws/SR Arachnos scrapper is hard to solo before then.
  8. gameboy1234

    Albert Maurer?

Nope, I think I've noticed her too. Paragon Wiki says she's a contact but has no missions or other text besides that one comment. No idea what is planned.
  9. Yes, the lock is temporary, in a day or so you'll be able to try again.

Why not just contact support like everyone is suggesting rather than moaning about how "screwed" you are?
  10. Waaaaaayyyyyy long ago... A FF/Nrg defender, I think, or something like that. Eventually replaced with a Nrg/Dev Blaster, named Iron Guy.

Weeeeellllll... I don't like to be seeing as dissing someone else's server, but of those two I would pick Freedom. Virtue is the role playing server, and frankly some of those role players are way too hard core about their roleplaying for my personal tastes. I tried it, I didn't like it.

I didn't care for Freedom either. Too crowded, too laggy and again there was a weird vibe to it. More folks tends to mean more chances to run into nit-wits, I suppose, and many experiences were good on Freedom, but I did have some bad ones. That and the lag drove me away.

I'm happier on the middle population server. Champion, Guardian, Justice. With the global server channels, there's never any problem getting teams or trials. Champion in particular has become a permanent home server for me.

The OP mentioned PvP, and I think that might be the best reason to go to Freedom. However, I don't PvP in this game (still protesting changes made in i13) so I really can't say for sure. I think though if the OP wants to try out a different sort of server than Freedom, I'd recommend one of the three I mention in the paragraph above this one.

I got my security question wrong several times before I got the right combo. Either you messed up far more times than I did and locked yourself out, or you're mistaken about the "one time" thing. Just try it, it'll work out.

I don't think the game gives him that option. Your very first character ever, you must create a Praetorian. After that, he'll get the option to make a Praetorian, Hero, or Villain when he makes new characters.

And that's not bad, because the content in Praetoria really is better. I'm not sure it's any harder either. Early missions in Paragon City can send neophytes into contact with level 6 enemies, which can make just getting to your mission door a frustrating exercise.

(don't know if there is PvP or no, but if there is, I prefer PvP)
I believe Freedom is the most populated and also the unofficial pvp server. Pvp got "adjusted" a while back and interest went way down. Pvp exists in special zones and Arenas, but not over the whole server, so no ganking newbs.

For classes or roles, usually I love DPS and CC classes, examples of played classes Necromancer (EQ and EQ2), warlock (wow), necromancer (Age of Conan), champion (LOTRO), Assassin (Rift), etc. I also like playing Healer in some games. I also like a class that would be good for both grouping and solo play. So my next question is which class would you think would suit me the best?

Masterminds are pretty independent and do well on teams. You might try the new Demons set, with Dark Miasma (recently improved) or Pain Domination (newish). You'll have to make a Praetorian character first, and the story lines there are very nice. But you should make a red and blue side toon too and check out the content there.

Dark Miasma and Pain Domination are both buff/debuff sets that also heal. We have no healers here. All sets are combination sets that do more than just heal. In every case, your buffs and debuffs on a "healer" are going to be bigger than your heals.

Also, anything important I need to know I should work on as soon as I start the game?
Head to your server forum (here on these forums) and say "Hi." Ask what the global channels are and how to get on them. Global channels are system wide (all servers) chat channels that are way better than being in the biggest uber guild. You have 2000+ folks on those channels, and they're a great source of teams and raids.

Don't over look the Weekly Strike Targets as they come up, they're a great source of XP as they have a special bonus.

Don't worry about passing content. Being super heroes, we can just travel back in time to do any content we missed. It might involve flying around in circles really fast or magic crystals or something, but I can't tell you because it's a secret. You'll find out.

Have fun, and don't be afraid to post any additional questions.
  15. I didn't see mentioned a certain other superhero genre MMO which Cryptic released recently, which I believe also uses hospitals.

  17. Really? I didn't know that. I'll have to get toons I'm still leveling onto more WSTs.
  18. Note: you don't have to do "all the little TFs". You get components that way, sure, but you can also craft components with shards. Shards are just easier. Sure, if someone is doing a TF or SF you need, hop aboard, but I would rather jump on a TF now and get some shards than wait for just the right TF to come along.

I think the best way to get Alpha up is to ride the ITF train. Alpha slot uses shards, unlike all of the other Incarnate slots. ITF is fairly easy, run often, and a good source of shards. You should be able to get 6 or so, minimum, per run. So a couple of shardy (killing most NPCs, as opposed to a speed run) ITFs should get you the 12 shards you need to craft the 3 components for your first Alpha slot.

    SG/VG dead?

I think your best bet is to join the server channels. You'll meet new folks. Not all of them are worthy of long term friendship, but some will be and you'll be able to talk and understand how you interact with them.

I usually don't do more than just jump on trials and chat casually with folks, but I get friend invites regular enough, and the occasional invite to someone's private global channel too.

Just meet enough folks, have fun, be cool, and it happens.

    SG/VG dead?

There are server channels that are global channels and have supplanted super groups to a large degree for some of us. In short, it's not necessary to join a super group any more to get reliable teammates. Jump on a server channel, and you've got 2000+ "guild mates" who are always doing stuff. Team invites are easy, and so are trails and task forces.

You can be in a SG/VG also, but the server channels are a much better bang for the buck, imo.

Well, I also don't care for lag, but testing some new tech out for 45 minutes won't kill me either. I have a couple of toons on Freedom, and I'll be beating the snot out of inter-dimensional invaders on the 27th.
  25. Most of the good ones are taken: Paragon Wiki, these forums, COH Titan data.

There is also Mids, a standalone program that lets you build your heroes off line. It's a great planning tool.

    http://www.cohplanner.com/

It may be a bit hard to use at work, as the interface is kind of game-like, and it would probably be obviously "not work related" if your boss saw it. But it is an off line tool, and a very decent one.
