  1. I asked pretty much the same question recently and got a bunch of replies, including some builds. You can check it out in this thread here:

    http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=256737

There are of course lots threads on much the same subject, if you'd like to browse through the forums.

I think there's like about three or four different theories on how to build a Fort, depending on how much melee you mix in, and what pool powers and IO sets you go for. Mine is a ranged, controller-ish build that forgoes nearly all pool powers in favor of having lots of Fort powers and the big AoEs. It's an effective team build that works well on all trials I've played and task forces too.

  2. I think the biggest change to builds recently was Stamina and the whole fitness pool are now inherent. You get Stamina at level 2 now, automatically, and you don't have to sacrafice powers anymore to get it at level 20.

Most build guides don't reflect this. But, you can just add three powers to the build guide that you want, and you're good. This lets you get in another attack or two, and some defensive or utility powers. Stuff that's good but the guide advises to leave until the 20's can be taken right away.

The other thing is that IO sets have made builds complicated enough where it's better just to ask in the Archetypes forums what you should do for IO slotting. The guides still work fine as leveling guides. For leveling slot with regular SO's until level 30, or even all the way to level 50. IO sets are really a kind of end-game exercise, although some folks like to start playing with them earlier. But you should ask in the forums for levels past that, as IOs are really critical for getting top performance out of your toon.

Lastly, you have a 2nd build now. At level 10, you can switch to a new build that you can re-level up. It's basically a free respec. I'd advise that you save this feature until you are sure what you want to do with it. Play up to level 28 at least to get a feel for your character's powers, and ask around what's good. After you think you have a good build ready to try, you can respec then with your 2nd build.

P.S. EATs and VEATs are now unlocked by getting a Hero or a Villain, respectively, to level 20, not level 50. If you have a toon over level 20, just log them in to unlock the corresponding epic archetype.

    This.

I just (two months ago) finished adding 5 Lotg:+R to a toon, and I did it entirely with tips. Anything that costs less than 20 million Inf I bought on the market, usually as a recipe and craft it, it's cheaper. (20 million Inf is what it costs to convert 50 R-Merits to one hero merit.) Otherwise, I did Tips.

Buy one Hero Merit on day one by converting 50 R-Merits, and do 5 tips. On day two, do 5 more hero tips, do the morality mish, and buy a LotG:+R that day. You can buy 1 LotG every two days if you do it like that.

Actually, I did buy one set of Purples with Inf, not Hero Merits, but I only needed 4 and it was a relatively cheap set, so it only cost me 250 million or so for the whole set.

    Eh?

My shield tanker soloed a lot and I think all of her Shield powers are useful on her personally. Seriously, you take team oriented buffers and then complain that your team oriented character isn't useful solo? Duh?

Take something with solo/self oriented powers if you want to solo.
  5. Way more than 5 years ago. But the spec sheet said "AGP 2.0" or whatever but they didn't mention that it was fixed on the board, no port. That's why I say "look inside." Or at least make sure they have a satisfaction guarantee.
  6. Another thing, try to look inside any computer you get. I once bought a name brand computer only to discover that it had no APG port. The on board graphics were my only option. Check the components you intend to upgrade carefully, make sure they can be upgraded.

That aside, there's no reason to not buy on sale or get components cheaply. I've used NewEgg before and had excellent luck. (Although if you're only 15 I don't recommend a built-it-yourself system unless you have experience or someone to help you.) I do still recommend you stay away from returns or refurbished units; those I've had awful luck with.
  7. Heh, just checked The Noob comic and realized that it's the same age as CoH. Maybe they should have tie in, and get Ohforf'sake to play a super hero MMOG for a while...

    Heads up: NSFW language.

Ditto. Buy new, with a full warranty. If you get a lemon, bring it in, get a new one, and let some other chump get your "refurbished" system that you didn't want.
  9. I have just recently (March) purchased a new laptop for $850 with integrated graphics that runs great on the middle settings, and will run OK on the top settings (though a little choppy).

It's a Fujitsu Lifebook AH530, with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 550v graphics. I just went to Fry's and opened all the "Windows Performance Score" on all the machines and picked the one that had the highest score and was less than $1000 (and wasn't a return).

My Windows score is 5.9 over all, CPU is 6.8 and 3D graphics is 6.5. I have Windows Home Premium w/ 4 GB of RAM. Get something close to that and you should be OK.
  10. It might be worthwhile to have the community/php folks look at the board titles. "Rookie Hero" might be better than just "Rookie." Even better would be to check your forum skin: Hero skin -> "Rookie Hero," villain skin -> "Mook." Etc.

Just random thoughts and speculation though, mostly....
  11. I don't know. As far as I can tell, Castle came up with the idea entirely on his own. I'm sure there were players lobbying for something similar, but I think the actual mechanic -- make the whole pool inherent -- was Castle's solution.

Hmm, that might make for a fun zone event.

Enough super side kick down in levels, temp travel suppression, and make the trams/ferries work different for folks in the race.

As part of the event I could see some "race banners" big signs that go across the street where the race starts and ends, some "extra spectators" standing along the street, and a special contact to talk to to enter the race.

Contestants get a special icon over their head so we know who actually talked to the contact and entered the race.

    Don't forget the Icon Rep/Facemaker.

Seriously though I could use a Black Market rep in that zone. Pls pls pls.
  14. That's funny. Hey instead of a nurse, could we get a bartender that sells Insp like in the Tiki room? I just can't face those Praetorian incarnates dry....

    Fortunata advice

I'll agree with most of the above. It's nice to take a couple of high damage melee powers on a Fort at 24. You will run into stuff that's resistant to Psi, so a bit of lethal in the mix is a good thing.

I don't think trying to build a full attack chain for melee is needed. Just have Lunge or Strike so you can poke an eye out every now and then.

Powers to not miss: Indomitable Will, Foresight, Mind Link. Dominate and Subdue. I also like Mask Presence and Super Speed, as the two basically make you totally invisible, and Hasten is a nice pool power on a Fort. Tactical Training: Maneuvers doesn't look great on paper, but with all the +Def buffs out there, I think it's mandatory because you'll miss it greatly on teams if you don't have it.

I don't care for the PBAoE's on a Fort until you have enough recharge to reduce their down time to a minute or so.
  16. Most experienced players open their map and leave it open. It shows where you've been on the level, and also where you haven't been.

Open it, unpin it (one of the round dot icons on the map border) and minimize it by dragging one corner. Then move it off to the side but leave it open.

    And this.

For a good chance at teaming and also doing raids and TFs (which start at level 10 or so, don't miss them), you'll really need to be on the global channels. Go to your server's forum (here on these forums) and say "Hi" and find out what are the good global channels for your server. You don't need to be on Freedom or Virtue if you use the global channels.

Inventions can be tough. Just buy the regular ones from vendors (Dual Origin and Single Origin Enhancements). They're cheaper than Inventions by quite a lot and will work fine. Once you get to 50, then worry about Inventions.

Also, if you sell for 1 inf at the market, you'll (normally) get more than 1 Inf. The market auto-sell matches your sale price with the highest bidder available, so you can get quite a lot. The important part of selling for 1 Inf is to get rid of inventory as quickly as possible. Don't let it build up. If something isn't selling at 1 inf, get it back from the market, right click on it in your inventory, and pick "Delete Stack."

Hint: When you do your tutorial mission, save (don't use) the Inspirations you get. Those Large Inspirations are worth 20,000 to 100,000 or so on the market, which can be a nice shot of cash for a new player.
  18. You might want to take a look at the list of Issues on Paragon Wiki. Tell us where you left, and we'll be able to help fill in the gaps for you.

On power sets: What did you find interesting when you left the game?
  19. First, thanks very much for committing to these monthly updates, they are a big deal keeping us informed about what is going on in CoX. And also I'd like to say that I greatly appreciate all the content that's been added within the last few years. The new(ish) Paragon Studio's team has been doing a bang up job overall with all the new content.

Some specific thoughts on you Producer's Letter:

    1. I can sure see updates to content in Atlas Park & Galaxy City. Mercy, not so much, it's actually decent.

    2. However, the mechanic villain side that requires us to do some number of newspaper missions before we actually get a contact in each zone is pretty much just grind. Can these be removed, as a requirement? Perhaps brokers could be merged with Tip missions somehow, to make the brokers more interesting. Of course, please keep the mayhem missions.

    3. Missions in St. Martial desperately need updating, much more than Mercy, imo. Vivacious Verandi's arc, Chaos Unbound, I just happened to do at random via Flashback, and it was probably the worst I've experienced. I'd nominate that as needing a good revamp.

    4. In general, mid level villain content seems like filler. Stuff just cranked out to provide something to grind, with little thought into the stories or how repetative they'd seem to players. See #3 above. I'd look at some of this higher level content redside before Mercy, personally.

OK, thanks for keeping us in the loop! Take care devs.
  20. Last I checked, the Steampunk pack was available to everyone on the Test server. I'm sure they want you to go make a Steampunk costume and show it off.
  21. Yes, when in doubt, clear the room with the objective (hostage, clicky glowie, thing to destroy, etc.). Then clear the whole mish.

If you're in Atlas Park, try broadcasting for help, someone in game might be able to team with you and spot the problem. Also try the server forum for your server (here on these forums), you might be able to contact someone there, and also find out what your server global channels are. Those global channels are an even better way of getting help and teams than broadcast.
  22. Yes it's left click on a channel or player name to bring up the menus, like "Invite to Team" for someone who just sent a broadcast or message on a global channel.

Right click brings up the menu for the chat pane itself, where you can add or remove channels, join a channel, leave a channel, etc.

    For LionL

Hey, we talked a bit in-game about Fortunata builds. The build a used is basically the last one I posted on this thread, and I'm very happy with it.

    http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=256737

However there's some additional great commentary and ideas there too. All should be considered. Good luck!

I'll agree with this. I've tried some of that content in Nerva and St. Mart and it's really banal. Actually Nerva is decent compared to St. Mart, which really feels like the design team just plain ran out of ideas and just started coughing up any old thing to fill the requirements for leveling time.

One in particular strikes me: Vivacious Verandi's arc, Chaos Unbound, in St. Martial. Try it in Flashback. Ugh. No imagination and creativity, and then in the end the player just gets dumped on.

I'm of the opinion that new missions don't quite cut it. Certain content in the game is just too aged, and needs to be replaced. Anything they do, I hope the plan on removing some of the more tedious missions.
