If not, where would he go to get the game?

Right now, you can play on a 14 day free trial. You can download it right from this site (see the "Free Trial" on the main site page.)

You can only play to level 14, but that is expected to change with F2P later. So your brother can spend a little time now playing, and if he likes it he'll have the game downloaded and ready to go when F2P hits. We are 90% sure that all current Free Trials will be reactivated as F2P accounts. (And if not, well 14 levels isn't really a lot to lose.) F2P when it arrives will allow all levels up to 50.

Note that the current free trial allows 12 slots per server, and the coming F2P option only allows 2 period (not per server). So don't expect to be able to use more than 2 of your toons is you go the 100% free route. More slots will cost some amount of money (probably the current price: $10 for 5 slots).

A small point: don't forget that just because you are a "Brute" that you don't have to pick the big manly body model. Lots of folks like to make small characters or even small girls as a Brute.

This has two advantages. First, a small model will actually fit better in a lot of the instance maps, many of which are space constrained. This can be an issue if you are trying to melee a large number of foes in a small space.

Second, watching a little "girl" beat up people is funny as heck.

I'm picturing a "dead girl," kind of a small Wednessday Adams character who's a vengeful spirit back from the dead. That explains the /Dark powers, and for Fire/, well, many vengeful spirits manifest destructive powers like fire.

    Just my 2 nickels....

This is probably the best idea. Try all of the suggestions above. They're all right in their own way.

And questions are fine. We loves them, we does.

Now, do you have a useful AT combo to contribute, or did you just stop by looking for beauty tips?

You'll get tons of different answers for this but I vote Mastermind, maybe Thugs/Dark or something similar. I'm a tactical player also and a MM was my first love in this game. Mastermind = you're playing an RTS inside a super hero game. It's awesome.

The brother-in-law is more of a...let's just say, the non-tactical type. He likes to jump in and mix it up, whether that be in melee or ranged, he just likes to make things go boom.

A born brute. Or perhaps a scrapper. I'd vote for a fire/fire brute or an elec/shield brute, or equivalent scrapper.

As for myself, I'm in between and enjoy both! I do love to research, as gameboy figured out, but catching up on 6 years can be daunting. That's the type of deep end I enjoy jumping in, however

Fire/Thermal Corruptor would complement the Fire/Fire brute, or something like Fire/Ice Corruptor for the Shield brute (or scrappers). The mastermind is pretty self sufficient and would benefit from either.

You can just buy one from the market. My blaster in Praetoria did. A jetpack makes running many of those missions solo a breeze.

Why? Three masterminds would be quite strong and easy. Esp. with the new AoE buffs (FF, Thermal) a whole team of MM would be awesome.

Everything said above is true: anything will work. I'll just toss in yet another idea: three VEATs. Again anything, but a Night Widow, a Fortunata and an AoE spec Crab would be pretty fun and awesome. Double Mind Link from the widows and lots of debuff and AoE from the Crab, plus stacking team buffs from everyone.

Other ideas: 1 Brute and 2 Corruptors. Say a high damage brute (Fire/Fire, or something with /Shield Defense) and a fire/dark corr and a fire/rad corr.
  10. The powers you did choose look fine to me. You've got the mandatory ones, and all the others are up to you. All you can do is try it out. As long as you're soft capped and Mind Link is perma or pretty close, it's probably good. It also looks very similar to the build I use on Trials, so I don't think you'll have problems.
  11. I like these ideas. I've been thinking for some time that CoH needs some mini-zone events.

For example, we had a halloween even recently in the spring. What the heck? Need some spring events.

One idea I had for a spring event is an attack by Devouring Earth. A classic superhero bit is to have a building enveloped by vines and mega-sized plant roots and such. Well we should do that. Take an existing building and do a version with vines and big roots and etc. Then it can work like a Fire in Steel Canyon. Devouring earth roam outside and have to be defeated. Defeat enough and you go inside the building to accomplish some task (like removing some of the creepers). This done enough times (by different teams) and the event is won.

Another good spring event I think is bank robberies. Spring is good weather and a good time for tourists; unfortunately some of those tourists are from the Rouges Isles, and they aren't civilians. Heroes have to defeat villains and minions out side a bank. Once enough are defeated, then they progress to then inside of the bank which is filled with mastermind minions of one flavor or another, and other villains too (brutes, corrs, doms, etc.) Heroes must take down the Villain Group Leader and his crew to stop the bank robbery.
  12. What you've got looks absolutely fine to me. I wouldn't change anything if those are the powers you prefer.

You might check your End use--it's possible you may be able to skip Cardiac and go Musculature for the damage bonus. However your own testing in play will tell you that.

Other wise looks like a very sturdy Fort build. I might steal it for my 2nd build.
  13. Your welcome, I hope I've given you a couple of ideas at least.

Don't forget we get a third build now, once you get your Alpha slot. Myself, I was thinking of adding a more conventional pre-Incarnate Fort build, with Aid Self and Gloom and a To-Hit debuf, just for free play if I wanted to go that route. (My current build above is soft capped but not for incarnate trials. I use Diamagnetic Interface to add some To-Hit debuff to all my attacks to help make up for this.)

  15. General: I've noticed that after getting to 50 and slotting all the IOs I want, I don't use Aim any more. You could replace that with a power you want, maybe one of those AoE you're missing.

Other general commentary: as long as Mind Link is perma, you're fine. Double stacked Assault and Maneuvers is good too, but not totally required imo, if you have some other reason for not taking those powers.

I'm curious about this. How do you justify Flight on a "normal" character? I use super speed. According to the CoH lore, Synapse was given his speed powers in a cruel experiment by the Crey corporation.

I figure I got my super speed the same way. Arachnos has been contracting with Crey to enhance its agents for a while now. I have cybernetic implants from Crey that are safer and cheaper but not as powerful as Synapse's that let me move and run much faster than normal. It's a minor sort of RP but I'm pleased with it.

Damage and/or control are not insignificant.
The build below has no problems with End and uses Musculature and double stacked Assault. Final damage bonus on say Subdue is around 152%. It's pretty sweet, and I don't even have the Tier 4 yet. Note the slotting in Health/Stamina.

    Quote:
Cost, oh my god the cost.
This build is pretty cheap and was done mostly with Tips. I bought the one purple set and any of the cheaper IO sets, but most of it was plowing through Tip mission. With Mask Presence, Super Speed and Confuse this is pretty easy solo. I ghost most of them.

    OK here's my build.

I'm using Aim here, but please substitute something else. Recall Friend is a possibility--ghost missions then 'port in a team. If you must have Hover/Fly, consider removing Aim and say Psy Tornado (the weakest AoE, imo) and adding H/F.

Note that the 98% recharge is before Hasten. I actually have about 168% recharge, enough to perma both Hasten and Mind Link. The +45% Accuracy is a nice bonus too.

Note that is is deliberately a control heavy, ranged, team build. I made no attempt to fit melee powers in this build. Maybe next one...

    keyes worth it?

You gotta admit that it's not a player question though.
  17. I typical use a Microsoft brand wireless mouse and keyboard. I disconnected the USB receiver and tried just the laptop keyboard, same result.

I scanned for viruses and got no hits (found one tracking cookie). I don't use any kind of helper programs or other external key remapping software.

Keybind file: I haven't looked at it yet, but I don't think so. I can type the keys fine in chat. I'll check other things as I have time.

This. Please give me more VEAT costume slots, and please let me use the Ascension Armor on at least a few of them.

That said, I'm sure the reason why we can't do it now is because "the game isn't coded to do that." It's hard coded to allow only the VEAT costume in one slot and only those costume parts, because that was the "vision" when VEATs were created.

I'm not saying a change would be easy (because I have no idea) but I think a change is almost universally desired by the players. Plus, this is VEATs were talking about. We're villains. Do it or we'll, um, hold your Star Wars action figures hostage, and slowly dismember them until we get it.

Yeah, that's the ticket. Star Wars toys hostages.

The freebies you get with $15 per month basically mean you're playing for free. The only real difference is that you're obligated to "buy" those things, rather than doing it manually.

    Oh yes, forgot one more:

    Forum access: $priceless.

This is my attitude. When I get tired of Trials, I go badge hunt for a while, and do tips. No one is forcing you to do Trials, rewards notwithstanding.
  22. That thing needs flashing red lights on the end and horn that sounds when you back up with it.
  23. Hey all, I doubt anyone could help me on this, but it's starting to become very annoying and I want to raise it's visibility.

Basically, the key-binding system has start to go weird on me. It doesn't recognize some keys, and transposes some keys to other keys. Here's a short synopsis.

    ---
If I go to Options->Keymapping, the following keys have difficulty.

\ (backslash) appears as ] (close bracket) in the keymapping display. If I type a \ while setting a key mapping on that menu, a ] appears instead.

If I type a ] (close bracket) it appears as a [ bracket.

[ is ignored as a keymapping if I type it.

= is also ignored (when I type = with for example Next Tray flashing, nothing happens)
    ---

This issue has been present for me for some time, but has recently got worse. The = thing is really killing me, because I switch my trays around (using - and =) on some characters.

I'm not sure at all what could be going on, but it's consistent and 100% reproducible. Also, as I was typing in the /bug report, I noticed that the characters would appear correctly in the bug report dialog box. \ appears as \, ] appears as ] and the [ does show up when I press it, even though the key mapping display doesn't acknowledge it.

So I'm kinda at my wits end, but I'm sure it's a software issue. Thanks for listening.

VIP = Subscriber. You pay your $15/mo, you get to play everything.

Compare that to current system: same thing

VIP = you get everything you get now, plus 400 points per month that you can spend on swag and things you currently pay extra for like booster packs and what not. Free Steampunk pack? Yes please.

400 points is about $5 so the new VIP is actually about a 33% discount from your current subscription.
