Quote:(I really wish they would give us a LFG chat channel that we could, you know, CHAT IN, instead of the LFG chat channel that they are using to make stupid game announcements in. Hi, you can put those in system, dammit! They're system messages! I hate clogging /help with LFG messages.)
Yes, LFG or Freedom would be great.
Another thing I'd like to see is the number of people waiting in the queue. I think some feedback is critical. "Average" wait time is no good if there's only three people waiting, your effective wait time is infinity if that happens. -
Server *are* *up* now, just in case anyone was wondering.

Quote:JUST announced by Z on the U Stream chat not 30 seconds ago, known issue. It's going to be a fun patch. Z also said earlier that there's some issues and they may go over the 6 hour time.I know servers are not open to the masses yet, but: is anyone else able to move the scrollbar at server select? It keeps snapping to the top for me...
Also the servers are "up" for testing but you can't log in. Hold your horses, you won't be able to log in until at least 1 pm Pacific Time at least. -
Quote:I was going to say "mastermind" too, if the goal is to be able to walk away from a keyboard, although I'd suggest Bots/Dark Miasma. Run the Nightfall aura, target your Assault bot, and put Twilight Grasp on auto, and voila! instant auto death machine.Hmm... how do you feel about indirectly dealing damage, like through pets? bots/ff could fill that roll
(Actually I haven't tried targeting through my pets. It works on NPCs so I assume it'll work through a pet.) -
Quote:He suggested that people who returned to only be hit in the face with a now useless character
Yup. You get what you pay for. There's plenty of options for returning customers listed up thread in addition to paying a minimal $2 monthly fee. I don't feel the need to reiterate them here.
Quote:Seriously, this is a business model that crack dealers can figure out. It's not difficult. For the first hit, you don't give them the stuff you cut with cat litter and ground up glass. You want the first taste to be the good stuff. For returning players, Freedom fails at that part.
Seriously, I don't think "crack dealers do it" is a good business model for anyone. The idea of getting players to return is to get them to pay something. If they won't, at all, or make any kind of compromise, then I really truly don't think they're going to be paying for anything in the future.
The goal is to NOT give away the store. Dot-bombs didn't get that. We've learned our lessons, so we're not doing that any more. -
Quote:This is correct.I'm pretty sure he was referring to the IO license which costs Premium players $2 dollars per month to use IO's, not suggesting they drop the monthly sub $2 dollars to entice people to remain subbed.
It costs $2 per month to play with IOs under the current Freedom billing model. If that isn't the deal of the century, I don't know what is.
Except for possibly playing completely for free for 50 levels and getting all the legacy content too, just the way we all used to play up through Issue 8. -
I found my Mastermind to be the easiest to solo, but at level 50 managing pets can be a drag on Trials and other difficult content. (I play a bots/FF mastermind btw.) Tanker solo decently, from personal experience, and team well too. Forts and Windows also are plenty capable solo and also team well.
I haven't played them all the way up but Soldiers (Crab and bane) have good reps. Scrappers too have a reputation for being solo friendly as well as good damage on teams.
It really boils down to what you want. Pick what seems best to you. Yes it does help if you pick one of the "power" builds (like /Dark Miasma) but most things can be made to work. Most people don't pick Bots/FF as their "solo" builds but I found it very capable. -
Quote:Biggest thing I can say is check the server forum for your server - there should be a list of global channels there - those can help you find teams.
Quoting for emphasis. Those new global channels are where it's at. They have a max capacity of like 2500 folk, so it's like being in guild with 2500 members. There's almost always something going on, regardless of the server.
Get to your server forum (on these forums here), and ask about the global channels. If you have problems finding folk, ask on the forums when is the best time to play or find folk. You may have to switch servers depending on what times you play, but there's almost always a way to find folks. But you do have to ask for the advice. -
Quote:Scenario: former player decides to give the game another look. The download the client, start the game and then are immediately faced with the need to either respec/level a second build or to re-subscribe for $2 a month instead of $15 if they wish to play their old characters.
I play my characters in the Ouroboros missions with out enhancements to get badges. It sucks but it's doable. You don't *have* to immediately respec. Odds are most returnees won't notice right away.
Quote:If they weren't in the mood to subscribe for the last 2 years, then they have experienced absolutely nothing at this point to change their mind.
And if they won't at least shell out $2 per month, who cares? If they're not going to make any effort at all, then they probably aren't going to stick around regardless.
Players who want to play will find a way to make it work. Maybe they couldn't justify $15 per month but $2 is within their budget. Maybe they'll take the time to respec into SOs. Those are the people you want as customers because they'll stick around and because they want to be here. The entitlement oriented folks who expect everything they had for free, I doubt they'd ever be a customer. -
Quote:Wouldn't that be nice? To have communication going on where everyone can actually see it?
I've added Help to my default list of channels, and I answer questions when I'm able.
I do think one more server wide channel that everyone, even Free players, have access to by default would be a good idea. It would at least leave Help for those actually needing help, and LFG and general chatter could go on the new channel. Some folks have proposed calling this new channel "Freedom".
But regardless, yes, there are going to be folks chatting with the newbies, myself included. -
Quote:I tried it on beta. You get messages relating the queue, but that's it. If you tried to join all trials at a level less that 50, for example, it tells you there are some queues you don't qualify for.This.
I stumbled across it recently and tried to use it, but it did not appear to be working.
But it seems to be system only. No player messages. -
Has anyone managed to send I message to the LFG channel? Because I gave it a go and couldn't. How does one use LFG?
-
Just a quick note: I only need one badge for this, the one where you collect all the acids, none of the grenades, and then don't use any. I could bring my Fort (basically Psi/Team) with perma Mind Link for the other runs, if desired.
-
I once put a stack of 10 Luck Charms up for sale for 54,000,000 each. Needless to say, they didn't sell and I had to eat the Market fee, which is sizable for 10 of the darn things.
I really wish we had some more "compartments" in our salvage. Not additional storage per se, but additional buttons or slots where we could move important stuff so that it didn't get caught up in the hurried "sell this fast" mode after doing missions.
I'd also like to be able to have compartments in the vault and be able to store recipes and enhancements in there. -
Quote:Yep, and the genius of it is that if you can level your free toons up to level 50 and play most of the content, then many people will get attached to those toons and want to make them incarnates, improve their builds with sets, etc.
I think it is, or should be, a tertiary goal just to get more folks playing. There more people are online, the more fun it is for everyone. The primary goal I'm sure is to get more VIP sign-ups. The secondary goal is to get those who don't want to be VIPs to buy stuff in the store.
Towards that end I support some changes that might make it easier for new folks to sign up and enjoy themselves. Global friend tells, for example, and a Freedom channel. Also I'm thinking that gifting items from the story, including the points/status you would have got from the purchase. That way, your friend can sign up, and you can send him 400 points so he won't be on a noob account anymore. That I think would be a huge deal for getting new blood in.
Where I draw the line is nerd rage like "free play screws me over" or nonsensical hyperbole like "my infant baby will have no formula to eat." That stuff is just beyond the pale. -

Quote:Yet you're spending ~$14 per month right now. I can tell because you require a subscription to post your screeds here. Some people genuinely CAN'T afford to spend $2 a month on a video game. Because other things they could spend that $2 a month on are more important than escapism.
Nevertheless, if you can't afford $2, then fine, but don't complain that you don't get any IOs. Just make do, ok? -
Much too strong.
Quote:However, I can see the concern of some people with the IO situation, and how it could put off some returning players to not have their IOs after coming back to the game,
Quote:Yes, there's a lot that could do that, but the IOs are something they could have had all along and did earn somehow before when they did pay and subscribe.
Quote:I don't think its too game breaking or unreasonable for them to be able to access the ones that they do have slotted, at least partially, when not having them means they have to dump what they did earn previously to get working things now.
1. Use your second build.
2. Play a new toon so you don't loose any already slotted IOs.
3. Hang out in AP and role play instead.
4. Play with friends who can buff you and don't mind your IO-less status.
Especially #2 above. Leveling new toons is half the fun in this game, why not just do that? You won't loose any IOs and you can enjoy all the new lower level content to boot.
Quote:Since they probably won't have auction house access
Quote:if they don't have IO access, they could be losing a ton of stuff -
Quote:It is the job of the merchant or service provider to get as much as possible from the consumer.
Which Paragon Studios is doing by not giving you everything you want for free. Which you seem to expect them to. Yet you accuse US of being communists or something because we point out that you should expect to pay for the server farms, development time and bandwidth you consume and not get it all for free along with your gov't cheese.
Man if that isn't the height of hypocrisy and confusion, I don't know what is. -
Quote:Which would be extra work for the devs, to benefit customers who by definition aren't going to pay.So maybe some kind of scaling down to give what SO values would be
Quote:but also didn't completely screw over someone who did IO out their builds but then couldn't continue paying for it later on.
I'm still having trouble seeing how folks feel getting to play for FREE is screwing someone over. If your top toon(s) have all of their builds filled with pricey IOs that you don't want to rip out and replace with SOs, play some other character that still has an extra build to spare.
Sheesh, this isn't hard, unless you're trying really hard to make it hard. You can also buy some of the Premium IOs that don't require a license. Or pay the measly two bucks a month for the IO license. I spent more than two bucks on a friggin' single serving of frozen yogurt just today. Jeebos Christos on a stick folks. I'd be a lot more sympathetic to your arguments if you could come up with something besides "playing for free is screwing me over." -
Quote:The other guy rolled a Claws/DA sccrapper and I hooked him up with a KB protection IO.
Yes, that totally sucks that your friend can play for free. *facepalm*
Quote:Since he was planning on playing at Premium level from the get go, he's going to lose his KB protection as soon as his free month runs out. He can always take Acrobatics, -

SlickRiptide has a play guide from the beta server that would make an excellent basis for a newbie freem guide:
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=270118 -
1. Play through all your starting arcs and missions. They're fun, and give you a good handle on the the game, especially Twinshot (Hero) and Mr. Graves (Villain).
2. Don't be afraid to ask for help on the Help channel. We're a friendly bunch and don't mind answering questions. Please do be polite and use correct spelling.
3. There's an instance ("Trial" here in CoH) called Death From Below that's available from level 1. It gives good XP and good rewards. Learn to use the LFG queue to join it. Do your starting missions at least once though; don't use DfB to skip them.
4. Villains fo' life, yo.

In all seriousness a newbie freem guide would be a good idea. Probably stickied both here and in the general Archetypes forum.
