This thread seems to vary between "it is possible with pools and IOs to make regen into a good tank" to "a tanker needs to be able to survive an alpha and regen cannot".
But this debate can only be useful if you actually agree on what you are debating about. Otherwise, and that seems to be the thread so far, you are alternating replies about different points which are unrelated to one another except they contain the words "tanker" and "regen".
Of course we can say nothing is required, it could be useless and the devs could put it in the game. Or we don't want to lock sets into roles, defenders are not healers, tankers do not have to absorb attacks, etc. Tankers can team or solo (I mostly solo my dark/dark tanker for instance).
But tankers defined role is to be tougher than a scrapper and able to tank for a team. Now teams can be large or small, have buffers or not. Have an ice/ controller who's ice slick eliminates the alpha, or whatever. But for the sake of argument a standard of what a tanker is expected to be able to do by a random player who selects tanker and selects a primary based on the short description in the character generator is required.
Quote:This seems to me to be a perfectly reasonable definition of the expectation for a tanker. To go a bit further and define what tanking for a team of 4 means:As to Regen tanks, the old school requirement on tankers is that starting around the early twenties, they have to be capable of tanking for a team of four on standard difficulty without significant ally assistance when slotted with SOs. If they can't for the vast majority of standard content, there's a potential balance issue.
1. They take the alpha strike
2. They maintain the aggro of most/all of the enemies
3. They do not get knocked unconscious or otherwise rendered helpless (unless they can do it and still manage 1&2)
And then it comes down to 2 questions:
1. Would the Brute version of Regen ported over to tankers as is make for a good tanker primary.
2. What would need to be done to Regen to make it a good tanker primary -
Quote:And by "Team or else!" you mean team or else do the other 99% of the game that does not require teaming! It does if you're trying to use the "MM" part of MMO to justify a "Team or else!" point of view.
I would bet if there were a single holiday mission that required a written out bio for your character the world would also not end. -
back to CoH after a year of being gone. I was worried the game would be old and tired, but I was wrong. It feels fresher and more fun now than it did a year ago.
1st - being able to play any AT as hero/villain. I never liked redside but liked trying their AT's. Now I can play what I want and still be a hero (apparently Tanker, Corruptor, and Dominators are my thing).
2nd - the story content. From Atlas Park to First Ward - CoH finally has real stories rather than just bookends of text on defeat all missions. It feels like they wrote stories and then came up with the missions that fit them, rather than the reverse. The characters are interesting (especially in Twinshot's arcs), your achievements matter (in that the world is changed). They are fun to go through - I actually want to experience the stories not just explore the maps.
I now actually log-in and have to decide if I want to look for a team, or play solo and check out the stories. -
I am very picky about what powersets I like. I want to be able to team and be useful, but also be able to solo and have fun. Blasters are just too limited (just attack), controllers too painful to solo. Tankers can be fun but are limited (I like dark for its options).
Now that we can play corr's as heroes I tried several out. I had a name Dual Duel that I used on a dual blades, but found I didn't like the set. So I tried out dual pistols. I added rad so I can heal, debuff in groups, and help take out GM's and AV's.
I am loving this playstyle. For simple fights I just play as a blaster. For anything slightly tougher I debuff with rad and then blast away. Damage - st and aoe, healing self, debuffs, hold a foe - it has all sorts of tricks and options.
and I love the look of dual pistols. I thought it would be stupid, but it really is fun to watch.
I really want to like doms - I used to really like controllers. But it seems corrs are the way to go. Or at least dual pistols/rad. -
I play west coast time, most nights after 9 (and weekends, and mornings, and while I should be asleep). I am looking for an SG that has people on my time.
I have about 9 characters I play, though most 3. I prefer teaming but will solo (going through First Ward now). Old time player, back after being gone for a year. -
can we schedule an SG night?
I can make any night except Tues and Thurs -
I knew some dark spirit was calling Living Ancestor and Tomb Fisted Kid back to the city.
Congratulations Obsidius and Rella on the non-combat pet.
Are the Regulators back up and running? -
I have Admiral Abyss, a deep sea diver with the ability to rapidly grow coral
the colored stone controller powers work great for looking like coral -
what the OP is confused by is that the character cannot affect the target as an indirect attack. They affect them as a ray
ColdKid draws the heat from the air at his hand, then a few inches further out, then a few feet further out, then across the room, then from their foe.
He isn't pushing cold at his foe. He is drawing heat from the air in a line from their hand to their foe. -
the powers have a use as panic buttons to contain powerful foes, a second spawn that aggros, etc.
but there are so many other options that these rarely come into play
they are no less and probably no more useful than most self rezzes and aoe sleeps -
the use of knockback is to go to Skyway and go up to the huge overpasses and run along knocking all the villains off onto the ground far below

lots of good ideas
Abyssal I like - need a second part to the name though
Sinker I like - also needs a second part
Atlantean Explorer - I don't want the atlantean, but I like the explorer - or something indicating he is a hero secondary and something else as his "real" job
Depth Charge I really like but for a blaster or something, not a controller
I don't think Abyssal Sinker quite works
Abyssal Explorer I kind of like, let me mull it over -

He's a deep sea diver in an old fashioned diving suit
earth/rad controller.
the earth is colored to look like coral
the rad is a blue glow like light under water
I called him Dr Diver but I don't really like it.
I need ideas -

Quote:I've seen it go offDug,
Just an FYI.
Which "chance to disorient" proc is it?
Be warned that if it's the "Triumphant Insult: Chance to Disorient" proc from the taunt io sets that particular proc DOES NOT WORK.
It NEVER fires (and even if it did it's only a mag-1 stun which won't even stun minions by itself - it has to stack with some other stun effect. which is moot since it doesn't work.)
Edit: removed some extraneous info about pounding slugfest since that can't go into a damage aura.
I believe it is energy manipulator, end mod set -
my experience with Halloween
I moved to Freedom and have several characters up to lvl 25.
I was invited multiple times to ToT teams. Each time it was teamwipe after wipe. The ToT teams camped next to the hospital because the wipes were so frequent. After several tries I gave up on ToT. It just made it harder to find normal teams.
I participated in one banner event semi-fully. I didn't know what to do, joined a team, fought some enemies, beat up banners, fought the boss. It made no real sense. It had no story to it. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't particularly fun.
I created a new character and decided to start in Galaxy as I haven't done those missions in ages. Got the first magic mission - defeat 5 hellions. Zombie invasion started and I couldn't complete the mission. At level 1 I couldn't fight zombies either. As a new character this was about the worst possible experience.
Zombie invasions are just annoying for low levels. They are too hard to kill. I like the idea. The swarm of zombies coming out of the ground as you fight them off is cool. It just sucks at low levels.
To sum up - the Halloween event basically interfered with my game play as it was not something that a low level could really participate in. -
Check out my story arc: I Will Dance On Your Grave
It was originally 5 missions. 2 were repetitive so I cut it to 4. I just revised it to 3 as a map was removed a year ago and I just hated to cut the mission.
So it is story based. My thing is to have a lot going on in the missions. There are standard spawns, but there are a lot of spawns doing something, saying something, etc. So within each mission is some variety.
344779 (I think) -
made a year ago or so. Just redone to tighten it up a bit.
zombies, voodoo, horror
custom Skulls group - so playable at any level. Solo friendly. Story based.
arc: 344779 -
so I assume this applies to all procs in toggle powers?
my elec/elec tanker just found a chance to disorient which I put into my toggle damage shield. So that can just trigger every 10 seconds? -
having only one lvl 50 in 40 months of playing I don't think leveling happens too quickly
but then I don't have any interest in getting to 50.
the problem with a goal is that once you have reached it you are done. It always takes too long until you reach it, and then not enough time because you are done. -
what really sucks about walk is that it doesn't give you the same effects as the alternate sprints.
my character needs that rainbow hue when he moves. Yes, walking is more realistic for when I'm roleplaying in Atlas Park, but walking without rainbow hue TOTALLY BREAKS IMMERSION!!!!!
Also, since walk is a power it cannot be used in the no power room in AE. That makes no sense at all from roleplaying standpoint. -
DM does good single target damage. You won't have to worry about that. What it lacks is good aoe.
With DM and Sands of Mu you can do great AOE if you can do it right.
Soul Drain gives you bonus damage and to hit for each foe around you for a short time.
Pull the foes around a corner so they line up. Hit Soul Drain, and use the cone stretching trick for Shadow Maul and Sands of Mu and you can get cones that hit 10 foes for massive damage. If you lag or get stuck though the SD will wear off before you get your attacks off.
I don't really like DM for a tanker though. It gives you more survivability, but l find tankers don't need that as much. I love DM on a scrapper. DM/WP scrapper is amazingly fun. -
Quote:my recurring character Tomb Fisted Kid is an undead cowboyBecause theres no way a 18th century wild west hero could be ripped through a portal in time to end up in a modern day setting... Or a normal human have extensive realistic military training in a superhero setting..../rolleyes
I've had him as an ice/nrg blaster and a dm/wp scrapper
but dual pistols would be best for him and what I've always wanted him to have - if it looked like a cowboy
