GJ on those, esp Lusca. I never tried soloing Lusca before, mostly because it would just be too long of a process.
I'd respecced out of my AV/GM solo builds for my various controllers, but I happened to wander into Ghost of Scrapyard yesterday on my Fire/Rad. And I mean wander into, as in I had no idea he was there til he stomped me, dead. So I got po'ed and went after him again, and found that I just didn't have the ST DPS (Char... Char...) to do anything to him, not even enough to take aggro away from my imps. He couldn't kill me either, so we were in a stalemate for around 5min before he wandered near a ferry and got fried. Still, nice to know that my teaming/AoE-oriented build can still stand toe-to-toe w/a GM indefinitely, even if I couldn't damage him enough to kill him (tempted to pick up my ST immob again, though...). -
My original toons rolled at or near launch that I still play are:
En/En blaster - my first toon ever. Not a favorite, by a long shot, and if it weren't my first and namesake toon, I would've deleted him a long time ago. Also rolled at launch a Fire/Ice blaster who's my fav blaster by a mile. First blaster to 50.
Fire/EM tank - was a fun tank before the Burn nerf, became fun again after softcapping his def. Now that Burn's been fixed, actually feels kinda uber again. 1st tank to 50, 2nd overall toon to 50. All other launch tanks have been deleted, tho my 2nd 50 tank was a Stone/Ice, but he was rolled around I6.
Kat/Regen scrapper - fun, but has been supplanted by my DB/WP who was instead my 1st scrapper to 50. Also have a Spines/Dark, but he was rolled pretty recently, around I17. All others are new powersets.
Ice/Storm & Ill/Kin controllers - were fun, still are fun. Supplanted somewhat by my Fire/Rad (rolled around I2) who was my 1st toon period to 50, but my Ice/Storm & Ill/Kin were my 3rd & 4th toons to 50.
Defender... er, no original defenders made it. I rolled a Kin/Dark at launch but deleted it, same w/a Rad/Rad. My 1st defender to 50 was a Son/Son, followed by Cold/Dark.
All in all, I still like most of the classic powersets. My favorite newer powers are WP, SD, TA & Son, but the oldies are still among the best. -
I tried the HF + BA for a while on my Arch/Fire and eventually respecced out of it. The plan was also to use Burn when it still had the fear component, so mobs would be too busy running around to attack me, meanwhile I could use FSC & Combustion for some serious PBAoE madness. The problem was that I just ended up getting so much aggro that even w/a decent def (not capped, but in the 30s), I'd get pasted quite a bit. Plus, every time I got mezzed, turning on the auras became too annoying, and the end costs were pretty annoying too. After Burn lost the fear component, I just said hell with it and dropped both auras and have been happier for it.

Quote:Part of the "knowledge and skill" is how to make good builds as well. That starts w/the power choices, as well as how to best maximize them. And an equally skilled player will of course do better with better powers/builds."It's not the Build, it's the Player."
You can sit and argue about what is "good" and what is "bad" all day. Fact of the matter is that a good player can take a weak power-set and excel at it, pushing it to the limit and out performing stronger sets, and visa versa any bad player can take an awesome power-set and make it very UNextraordinary at best.
Stop looking at the numbers and instead look at the knowledge and skill of the person at the keyboard, because that right there is where it's at. -
Quote:I'll see your Ice against my Stony *outside of Granite* against +4 Rikti. Any MSR or RWZ challenge. Or Carnies, DE (quartz), Rulaaru, Nemmies (x8, lots of lts giving Veng), basically anything w/heavy psi, +acc, -def, anything w/an auto-hit aura, etc. A well played Ice tank can handle all those, but not as well as an equally skilled Stone tank.Matter of fact, you have a stoner you want to put up vs my Ice/ ?
Can you pump up your Psi def w/IOs? Sure, but so can my Invul at 38% psi def, except my Invul has capped S/L resists to go w/his (mostly) capped defenses. And 50%-ish DDR isn't going to hold up long against massed Romans or the like. Again, a well played Ice tank can handle that, but not as well as a good Shields tank w/far higher DDR and higher overall resists to boot, who can also easily pick up Aid Self. Or again Invul or Stone who can fall back on resists even after the def fails.
Ice Armor is great. It also has a lot of holes, much like other sets, but are more obvious and harder to get around. Anyone who can play around them can do so even more effectively on other sets. You're kidding yourself if you think Ice Armor is anywhere near #2, much less #1. -
Yeah, you guys all just wait til we can pair Kat w/Shields.

Please, devs?
Oh, and wouldn't a Thanagarian be more like a Mace/* brute? -
So fellow Cold defenders, are you going for Spiritual for more recharge? Faster Heat Loss, Benumb & Sleet is very, very attractive.
Going Nerve for slightly higher def? Better shields, and better def for Arctic Fog, not to mention possibly Maneuvers and if you run stuff like CJ, Hover or Weave. And the +Acc doesn't exactly suck.
W/my own Cold/Dark def, I'll be looking at Ice/Glacial Shield, AF & Maneuvers for Nerve vs. Hasten, Sleet, HL & Benumb as the primary beneficiaries for Spiritual. Making a quich spreadsheet (apologies for the poor formatting):
Nerve gets me
Code:And Spiritual gets mePower Base ED cap Uncommon Ultra Rare Ice Shield 15.00% 23.56% 24.56% 25.56% Glacial 15.00% 23.56% 24.56% 25.56% Arctic Fog 5.00% 7.85% 8.19% 8.52% Maneuvers 3.50% 5.50% 5.73% 5.96% Total 23.5% 36.9% 38.5% 40.0%
Code:Power Base Rech Global ED Cap Uncommon Ultra Rare Hasten 450.00 99.80% 125.00% 138.55 134.01 126.83 Sleet 60.00 95.90% 125.00% 18.70 18.08 17.10 Heat Loss 360.00 97.59% 125.00% 111.60 107.92 102.10 Benumb 120.00 99.08% 125.00% 37.03 35.81 33.89
So for I19, my added total +def I give to my teammates is 1% w/Nerve Radial, assuming they're in range of AF. Eventually, it'll be 3% for Nerve Radial Paragon. Not huge by any means, but easier to softcap ppl assuming they have some shred of +def on their own, like CJ.
W/Spiritual Core Paragon, Hasten's only down for 6.8s, Benumb only down for 3.9s and HL down for 12.1s. Sleet's already perma, but will be ready 1.6s sooner. Plus every other attack or click power (Vengence) will come up faster.
Adding 40% to everyone's def (all positions as well as S/L/E/N) is very appealing. It gets Cold almost in FF territory, and we still hold onto our awesome debuffs. Most ppl don't stay within AF tho, and really, it'll be more like 31.4% def to all positions, which still doesn't suck by any means. Having said that, I'm thinking the faster recharging debuffs & near perma-Hasten is looking more attactive.
And yes, I'm utterly disgregarding Musculature and Cardiac. HL solves all end issues, and +dam is just not that appealing compared to what Nerve & Spiritual can bring to the table. -
A pet peeve of mine is when ppl treat the entire playerbase of either RP/concept players, or Min/Maxers. There's sometimes a 3rd group who play, "just to have fun," as if the min/maxers aren't having fun. Most of us, however, are in the middle somewhere (tho I'll freely admit I'm closer to the min/max end of the spectrum), and trust me, it's not just pure min/max'ers that find sets like DP pretty meh. There are plenty of us who will play for concept, but still want a very effective set. About half the time, I'll find a set combo I want to play, and form a concept around it, where other times, I just want a tough guy w/a bat (say, WM/WP brute). Either way, I'll try to maximize my effectiveness as much as possible w/what I got, but if the combo it truly weak, I'll likely abandon it.
I wrote a kinda lengthy diatribe about my currently active blasters and the reasons I don't play the other sets atm, but here's what it all boils down to: At the end of the day, I have fun playing blasters by cutting down swaths of mobs in quick order, and if I feel my blaster isn't doing a good job of that, I won't be having fun, so I won't play it. I don't have fun playing DP blasters because I don't think their kill rate is high enough for me, esp in comparison to other blasters. End of story.
Oh, and if you think DP blasters are rare, how many Son blasters do you see out there? -
So I have to get BF's recharge down a full 1.5s (and prolly a bit extra) for just the Empower -> SS chain? That'll definitely mean Hasten again, and prolly a purp set or two (already have 5 LotGs, but little other in the way of +recharge), which would likely wreck my defenses (well, not wreck, but it'll be lower). Do you know what the actual DPS #s are for the top few chains, and then the BF -> AV chain?
-
Frost at lvl 24? I'd take it when it first becomes available, but if you're not exemping down much, I guess it's a non issue. Other than that, looks like a solid build. There are a few spots where I'd slot differently, though it kind of depends on what you want to do. For one thing, I'd put in a 2nd slot in Swift--many 3-slot it for run speed, but I find 2 lvl 50 IOs are good enough.
A lot of your set bonuses are for positional defense, with only minor typed def. I'd look to switch out the Obliteration in FA w/3 Eradications and 3 Cleaving Blows for better E/N def, which also means 3-slotting Crystals. Like from TP; the extra slot in TP is giving you, again, some weak raged def and weaker E/N def. FF can also be 4 slotted w/Kin Combat.
I see you have a lot of little +dam buffs--dunno if that was intentional to counteract Granite, but I'd rather just stay out of Granite and do full damage, so I replaced a few of them, also to give you some more +run speed. I also replaced Tactics for Assault, which is another place you can get a quick S/L def + w/the Rect. Reticle set, if you want to skimp on a Kin Combat set.
W/a few tweaks (and I didn't really go in too deep, I just made some quick changes), I got you to 44% E/N def and 16.4 mph in Rooted.

Yeah, plus it's kinda easy mode. My Kat/Regen might barely outperform it on the edges, but it's much more effort. More fun too, but not for when I'm feeling lazy.
Re: redraw after ET, since I'm often maneuvering to line up my cone for ET, and usually have to move to reengage a single target, I'm just in the habit of hitting the BF button right after the ET fires whether it's up, I have a target, whatever, just to get the redraw out of the way. Again, at least I'm not Regen where every freakin' power causes it. -
Quote:Yeah, this is my exact concern. Post I19, I'm running the AV & Sweep combos so the only attack I didn't take was NS. If I drop VS for NS, I get the Empower combo instead of AV for no dropoff in defenses (same Kin Combat set in either). If I were to pick up Hasten, I might have to give up on some of my defenses (capped S/L/E/N atm). The higher DPS chains just require A LOT of extra +RCH, which means it will eat into you defenses.
I'm gapless for my BF + AV combo w/o Hasten or any other buffs (constant global rech bonus of 43.8%), and I'm wondering if the Spritual slot itself will allow me a gapless Empower + SS chain. This...
Quote:Those top chains require BF to have a recharge of like 3.8 seconds (roughly)
Maybe just as well since I'd be pretty screwed if I exemped down below 46, but it would've been nice to have Empower up for Energy Torrent. -
Quote:If we're playing that game...Tankiest tank set?
Bot/traps MM.
40+% to all defense but psi, which has 30+%
45% lethal/smash resistance, plus BG mode which cuts all incoming damage to by 5/7.
44hp/second regeneration
87.5% recharge, without hasten, hasten puts it up to 157.5%
Provoke
My Crab build at 50 has...
36% melee
46.4% ranged
48% AoE
52.3% S/L res
45.1% F/C res
41% E/N res
39.1% Tox res
Full mez protection including confuse, fear, taunt & placate. A slept "tank" is kinda useless.
Or my Son/Son defender w/capped ranged & 75% S/L resists (25~30 across the board for exotics), and the same limited mez protection as your MM? Does that count?
Quote:I've out tanked stone tanks, invulns, willpower, the whole bunch, and even tanked hami in an LGTF. -
If the magic DPS is 100, Axe only has 2 attacks w/base DPAs over 50 (so ED cap of just under 100) in Gash & Swoop, but 2 more attacks at a shade under it in Chop & Cleave. W/AAO and the occasional BU, you should be able to go over 100 DPS pretty easily. And can you fit an Achilles proc in BA also? Haven't looked at my own SD/Axe tank in a while--forget if I have that slotted.
-
So I know this has been discussed before, but I couldn't find anything definitive searching for it in the recent (last few months anyway) threads. Can someone please list the top DB DPS attach chains and how much recharge is needed for them all? My understanding is thus.
Assuming the Achilles proc in Ablating, the top chains are:
1) BF -> AS -> SS
Rech needed is very high
2) Empower combo -> SS
Rech needed is kinda high
3) BF -> Attach Vitals combo
Rech needed isn't bad at all.
Is that right? What are the actual recharges & DPS involved? Reason I'm asking is for my DB/WP, I'm using (3) w/o Hasten ATM, but I'm thinking w/the Spiritual alpha, I can get to (2), which means I could drop VS which always annoyed me as a long animating attack. Kinda wanted to make sure I had the recharge needed before respeccing though. -
Ah, well, that's easy enough. What about for a vil? Do they just go hero once and always have access to APPs?
-
Ha! You all fell for the oldest trick in the book. I obviously wanted an all-positions capped DA build, but was too lazy to do it myself! But I *know* you can't do the same for... er, Fire?
.
.
.
Seriously, nice work. I should've known better than to tell the scrapper community something was "futile". -
So, to access a PPP for a hero, we'd have to go all the way to vil, or just rogue or vig, respec, then switch back to hero to access our bases again? Then, we couldn't respec while a hero, right? I really should look at the PPPs more w/my other controllers (no way my Fire/Rad drops IW)...
-
Quote:Well, obviously Spiritual, because you want to bring up Dark Regen faster, which as we all know is a net +end w/the Theft of Essance proc, and enough mobs to drain.I just got a Dark to level 50 and I plan to do my first TF with him this weekend. He is Dark Stone and is a serious TankTroller. However he has tremendous End issues. Guess which Alpha I am getting ???
-
Quote:So... your DA's allowed to TP, but my Stony's not?I also added teleport, which I have found absolutely invaluable to tanking. Clogged door? Teleport. Slows? Teleport. Caltrops? Teleport. Master of disables ninja run? Teleport.
Hey, all the love for DA, and I'm getting mine to E/N cap too (already had S/L from long ago), and I know just how survivable they are. It's not going to touch Stone at the very top. That very top is rarely needed, granted, and DA is more fun to play for the most part, but let's not get too full of our love for DA, shall we?
As for 2nd toughest, assuming a top-end builds, I'd have to go Invul (my Invul has 38% Psi def, so please don't bring up that hole), but you can make cases for Dark or even WP. Hell, Shields w/Aid Self is well nigh impossible to bring down. BTW, while Fire's still at the bottom, I'm loving Consume's end drain resists these days. And death just gives me a nuke to play with. Haven't seen what Elec can do at S/L (E/N?) softcap, but I'm betting it's impressive too.
Bottom line, any well built tank is ******* tough. -
Quote:Werner's original response, to which I replied, was in response to your:We're veering on a tangent here, but soft capping to one damage type isn't in the same realm of effort a soft capping to all three positions or all damage types.
Now for Dark Armor specifically, I'd place greater effort into Energy Defense over Smash/Lethal, but that's how I chose to build Dark Armor.
Werner's point (and he'll correct me if I'm off) was soft capping a Dark Armor scrapper (as in to all three positons or all types) would require unpleasant sacrifices. Which I agree with.
My point to your post was that such sacrfices would not be necessary on a Dark Armor tanker.
Quote:In game, I frequently get tells asking how I soft capped my DM/DA and then shock when I explain I'm not. I also see player confused as to why they're soft capped characters is face planting while I'm still alive.
(In a further tangent, I'd like to see the kinda of builds your teammates are making if they're faceplanting w/some sort of def cap (maybe they're capped to AoEs?) while you're not. I think this may be a case of lrn2play for them?)
Still, great many try to get resist based sets to softcap (not that 45% is some magic # or anything...) to S/L, and E/N if they can, because, as Arcanaville points out, they are the most common damage types, and by a fair bit. The S/L def on my Fire, Dark & Elec tanks & scrappers make them a *ton* more survivable, and my original point was to emphasize that it didn't take all that much sacrificing to get them there, even on scrappers. -
Quote:FC in Praetoria would be quite the accomplishment. I have 27 FCs atm, and my only toons w/o it are... Praetorians. It's just easier to be able to craft in Steel or Cap, and to rush the process, have access to a base (and SG-mate mules). Kudos to you for your efforts! Then is occurred to me; Wouldnt it be cool if I could hit the cap and get fieldcrafter while I was in Praetoria?
Oh, yeah, inf cap is kinda cool too. -
Quote:Quote me:Bare in mind, I was referring to Dark Armor for scrappers. I strongly suspect Werner was as well. Soft Capping on a Dark Armor tanker is considerably easier and would require little if any compromises.
Quote:Eh, both my DA scrapper & tanker are softcapped to S/L def w/nary a sacrifice.
Actually, I should say hardly a sacrifice, not quite nary. Either way, well worth the effort. -
Man, and you're using the Glad armor too. Question, do you really need Pulverize? I skip it on my Mace toons and don't miss it at the higher levels. You're way over the S/L cap so don't need that set of Kin Combats either. I switched it out for 3-slotted Crystal, which gives you like an extra 14% DDR too, and swapped in a few Erad & Cleaving Blow sets in Shatter & Whirling Mace to hit E/N cap. Just a thought.

Quote:Eh, both my DA scrapper & tanker are softcapped to S/L def w/nary a sacrifice. Post I19, my DA tank will also be capped to E/N as well (still need to finish his respec, #3 tonight!), again w/o skimping on resists, attacks, recharge for Dark Regen, etc. Pre I19, I in fact didn't softcap him to E/N because I thought it would compromise too many areas (including some gimped slotting), but w/3 extra power choices, it's not that bad any more.I'd be shocked to see a soft-capped DM/DA running around, though maybe there are some. I just can't think how I'd possibly go about building one that wasn't seriously compromised in other critical areas. (Edit: And I LOVES me some soft cap, so I'm not rejecting the idea lightly.)
Then again, I don't strive for pylon time records (well, certainly not w/my tank) and don't care that I have the absolute top DPS chain, just that I have a pretty good one.
