    Meditation

Amanda rolled out her meditation mat and sat on it, she had hoped to stop this after leaving Sister Psyche's tutoring but Stephan had insisted she continue with it, at least now it was once a week instead of every day like Sister Psyche had insisted. But dwelling on the past wasn't going to help her concentrate.

She cleared her thoughts and spread her conciousness over the entire city, at this range she couldn't make out individual feelings or thoughts, this was something else, it was the city as a whole, it had a mind of it's own she had realised the first time she had done this. It was also insane, in human terms anyway, it constantly tried to destroy parts of it's own mind and the theoretical left hand never knew what the right did.

She tightened her focus, she could reach out to Skyway City and Independence Port now, with her range at this point she could make out mob emotions, the frustration of people going to work and school, the joys of young children in playgroups and the relief of crowds seeing a hero save the day.

She tightened her powers to Kings Row and felt the individual emotions of the people in the street, she felt the emotions of people and their surface thoughts as well, she felt many criminals in the streets but didn't stop to examine their thoughts to deeply, this wasn't the time for that.

Now she pulled her focus into the building, this was deep, she could scan not only for surface thoughts but memories as well, she found a bird on a window sill and moved into it's mind.

Amanda pushed the thought of flight into the birds mind, it flexed it's wings before it leapt, she felt the wind beneath it's wings, the joy of the endless expanse before it. She allowed those feelings to overtake her before she opened her eyes.

She carefully rolled up the mat and placed it back into her wardrobe, she walked into the sitting room in the apartment and opened the large window, she stepped out of the ledge and closed the window, then she stepped into the air, and for the first time she flew. It wasn't like how she had seen it through the bird, but it was enough for now.

    Part 5 - The Rikti

Rachel sat across the room from the Rikti as it stirred, Vanguard had confiscated the Rikti's weapons and armour but had allowed her to treat it, even if it was disguised in a thinly veiled attempt to gain information.

It finally sat up and looked across the room at her, it lunged for her but the restraints kept it from getting anywhere near her, after a short while of struggling it seemed to give up and retreated back to the bed.

    “Query: Location?” it finally said.

“You're in a Vanguard Outpost,” replied Rachel, “I had you brought here to be patched up.”

    “Reason: Heal.”

“Human's have specific laws governing prisoners of war,” replied Rachel, “We aren't allowed to kill you and have to make sure you can return home safely after the war, amongst other things.”

“Humans: kill Rikti: all?” asked the Rikti quizzically.

“Not all of us are mindless killers,” said Rachel, “I'm a doctor, I help the sick and injured.”

“Sick injured: left behind: slow unit.”

“Not with humans,” replied Rachel, “We try to help all other humans survive, some of us anyway.”

    “Rikti: Strong survive: rest perish.”

“Is that the way it's always been?” asked Rachel, “Even before the war.”

“Warrior: Cloned,” replied the Rikti, “Purpose: Battle.”

“Do you have a name?” asked Rachel getting up, “I need something to put on your charts except for Rikti. It sounds so impersonal.”

    “Designation: RX665-TK32,” replied the Rikti.

“Anything else?” asked Rachel appalled at the strange name. It looked thoughtful for a while before replying.

    “Squad designation: Ki'rarte.”

“Ki'rarte,” replied Rachel writing it down on the form, “I have to leave now, I'll see you get food but I don't know if you can eat it.” She shook her head at this before continuing. “If you need anything there's a buzzer above your head, either myself or one of the nurses will respond to you.”

She walked to the door before the Rikti spoke again.

    “Human: Designation?” it asked.

“Rachel Longstorm,” she replied smiling as she closed the door.

    Part 6 - Limits

Stephan fell to his knee, his hand still held towards the screaming girl, to Amanda's eyes the girl began to shimmer and appeared to be separating into two things. Amanda managed to hear two garbled words from the demon and the world snapped back to how it had been moments before.

“Damnit,” muttered Bluedarky, “The girls a channeler!”

“Just figuring that out,” muttered the Demon, “Why do you think I'm so strong?”

“Amanda,” yelled Bluedarky getting to his feet, “Get Numina, we need this thing's true name.”

    “But...” started Amanda.

“Go,” said Bluedarky waving his hand, “I can handle one demon for a few minutes.”

Amanda glanced around worried but eventually flew off towards Founders Falls to locate Numina. Bluedarky stood up straight and rolled his shoulders making sure they worked before moving into a ready stance. The demon possessing Rachel moved forwards towards Bluedarky and summoned a small flame around her hand.

It moved forwards quicker than Bluedarky had anticipated, he span around and the demon struck the flame against the back of his trenchcoat, it glanced off without leaving a mark and he dropped with a spinning kick against the girls legs. He heard Rachel's knee became dislocated and stood up quickly and stepped back.

The demon pulled Rachel's body up and snapped her leg back into position. It look back to Bludarky and laughed.

“I don't feel her pain you fool,” it laughed, “All the pain you inflict won't slow me down until you kill her.”

Bluedarky snorted at this, “Almost ironic,” he said, “I almost wish I hadn't come up with those plans to stop me under hypnosis.”

“To stop you,” said the demon.

“Yeah,” smiled Bluedarky, “I don't feel pain either.”

“Then I win,” laughed the demon, “You won't hurt the girl that badly to stop me.”

“Won't I?” asked Stephan, he sprinted forwards her and brought his hand to the back of her neck, she dropped to the floor as he struck and he smiled. “Vulcan nerve pinch be damned,” he muttered as he tapped his sunglasses.

“LOCA, you online,” he said, “Get a patch through to MAGI, I need some faerie thread.”

    Part 4 - Broken Bodies

Rachel ran towards the prone body of Hero 1 and knelt next to it, she pulled out her tools but knew what this would take.

She watched as her bodyguard swept the area and held her hand out over Hero 1's chest, she focused her power before she heard the rubble move. She glanced up to see a lone Rikti soldier staring with it's weapon raised.

“Think about what you're doing,” said Rachel calmly, “You don't want to die here.”

“Kill humans : all,” replied the Rikti.

Rachel grimaced and summoned her power, she drained the wounds from Hero 1 but instead of transferring it into her, she sent them towards the Rikti soldier and watched it collapse in agony.

She looked over Hero 1 and saw he was ok, he began to stir and she looked over at the Rikti, it had stopped moving. Remembering what she said back in her old office she sighed and carried her stuff to the Rikti.

She had to admit she didn't know Rikti biology as well as humans, but first she reasoned that the stuff coming out of the wounds needed to stay in the body and began applying bandages to it's wounds. Whilst she was doing this she heard Hero 1 stir and the bodyguard return.

“What are you doing?” asked Hero 1.

“I don't think I can save it here,” replied Rachel continuing to bandage the Rikti, “We need to take it back to the base.”

“Kill it now,” growled the bodyguard aiming his weapon at the prone figure.

“Stop it,” snapped Rachel forcing the barrel up, “I won't let this one die.”

“Your oath doesn't matter here,” said Hero 1 grabbing her, “We've lost Kings Row, we have to retreat now.”

“Then I quit,” said Rachel, “I'm getting this one to safety now.”

“We can't afford to lose you,” replied Hero 1, “Just come on.”

“We bring him or I don't go,” replied Rachel defiantly.

Hero 1 sighed then lifted up the Rikti and slung it over his shoulder. “Are you sure it won't wake up?” he asked.

“Not entirely,” replied Rachel, “But unless Rikti have a higher pain threshold than humans, he won't wake for at least a few days without medical attention.”

“I can see myself regretting this decision,” muttered Hero 1.

    Part 5 - Fight

The demon stood Rachel's body back up and stepped back, the two people she was facing were not the two it had known for the past few weeks, the girl who had called herself Rebecca had grown about six inches and now had brown hair instead of the blonde she had before, and Mr. Greenham had put on a blue trenchcoat and sunglasses. The two girls that Rebecca had raised were on the floor and running down the corridor from the scene.

“I believe we haven't met,” said the demon it used Rachel's voice to unnerve them.

“I suppose we'd better do this right,” replied the man, “You may call me Bluedarky, and the young lady here is Amanda. I won't bother asking your name.”

“Heroes,” laughed the demon as it launched Rachel's body to attack.

“Distract her,” said Bluedarky clenching his fists together.

“Got it,” replied Amanda stepping forwards, she sent a bolt of psychic energy into Rachel who stumbled at the last moment and fell, the demon stood before Amanda and went to punch her with her fist filled with flames, Amanda intercepted the punch with one of her own which sent the demon flying back.

“Now I'm confused,” replied the demon, “I thought you were a psychic, how can you not only punch me back, but also hard enough to block my flames?”

“Not telling,” replied Amanda, the demon charged again and Amanda launched it back with her telekinetic powers.

“Telekinesis,” replied the Demon, “Disguising you're powers behind physical attacks, that's actually quite impressive.”

“You should have figured that one out earlier,” smiled Amanda, “I was lifting Gemma and Janet using them.”

“True,” replied the demon, “But time to die.”

“Move,” yelled Bluedarky, Amanda ducked and the demon turned to Bluedarky.

“No!” it screamed running over Amanda towards him.

“Genitus malum everto!” yelled Bluedarky, the demon screamed as Bluedarky held out his hand towards it.

    Part 4 - Begin

Rachel turned from the counsellor's body to where Rebecca, Gemma and Janet had been standing, Rebecca was the only one standing there now, as Rachel approached she remained standing there stoically.

“Now I know I didn't hear footsteps,” said Rachel, “So where have the other's gone?”

Rebecca's eyes flicked up and Rachel followed them to see Gemma and Janet clutching each other by the ceiling. She looked back at Rachel who smiled.

“You're holding them,” stated Rachel, “But when you die, they'll fall to their deaths.”

    “That's right,” replied Rebecca.

“In fact,” replied Rachel, “You'd have been better off floating up there with them.”

    “Maybe,” replied Rebecca.

“Which raises the question, why didn't you?” asked Rachel.

    “It's a distraction,” replied Rebecca.

“From what?” asked Rachel as Mr. Greenham wheeled her around and punched her. Rachel flew backwards at the wall impacting it hard enough to crack it.

“That should keep her out for a minute,” commented Mr. Greenham, “Now pass me my things Amanda.”

Rebecca held out her hand towards her bag, it flew into her hands and she reached inside and pulled out a bundle of clothes. She passed them over to him and pulled a small vial of green liquid out of her bag, she pulled the stopper out and drank the vial.

    Part 3 - The Request

Rachel sat down in her office and indicated to the two heroes to sit as well, the pair sat down and Rachel noticed with mixed feelings how the two large men were far to large for the small chairs in her office, any feelings of sorrow fled however, when she remember why they were here.

“Gentlemen,” she started, “I'm sorry to have wasted your time here, but it is quite unacceptable that I...”

“We know where Samantha is,” interrupted Hero 1. Statesman shook his head in amazement at the British hero's impatience. “Don't be like that,” said Hero 1 to Statesman, “You know that it would have been harder to say later.”

Rachel stared in shock. “I've had,” she said, “The best detectives in Paragon City, no, the world, looking for her. I've scoured the continents, hired men to search the mountains and there's never been any trace of her or a body. Three expeditions to find her never returned!”

“Of course they didn't,” replied Hero 1, “They loved her too much.”

“Loved?” asked Rachel, “You mean lusted after her.”

“No,” replied Statesman, “MAGI have no clue why, but you and your sister can force genuine love for you onto them, it's strange but true, the affect dissipates when you're farther away from them, but never really leaves.”

“Where is she?” asked Rachel railroading the topic back on course, “Where is my sister?”

“Join, and we'll tell you,” replied Hero 1.

“What would I be required to do?” asked Racehel.

“You would be required to perform various forms of surgery on Vanguard agents,” replied Statesman, “Both normal and meta – humans, you'll have a fully equipped surgery to suit your needs, but you'll also be required to work in the field.”

“So long as you provide me with the correct equipment I can work anywhere,” she replied, “Although I assume it won't be after the battle, what will I be doing for protection?”

“You'll have an assigned bodyguard,” said Statesman, “And you'll be trained to use your powers in self-defence.”

“I won't kill,” stated Rachel coolly, “I took an oath that I'd never take a life, and that includes the Rikti.”

“We never asked you to,” replied Statesman.

    ------------------------------

Rachel ran on the battlefield that up until a month beforehand had been Kings Row, the radio over her ear continually sent requests of her abilities, the battle had raged long and hard and with the limited resources in her bag and running close to her own pain threshold she was only responding to the most serious of requests now. She finished bandaging up one vanguard soldier and left a tracer for pickup when a request came through.

“Command to Dr. Longstorm,” came the voice, “Hero 1's vital signs are at critical levels, you are ordered to render immediate assistance. Location is being sent to your tracker.”

“Acknowledged,” she replied, she grabbed the PDA like device from her waste and checked the screen, a map filled most of the screen with a series of bars in the upper left corner, Hero 1's live medical data. She made a hand signal towards her bodyguard before sprinting to the location on her tracker.

    Graphics Upgrade

    [ QUOTE ]
People are underestimating a side effect of overhauling the graphics properly - Being able to market the game "as new" again. Old players get a tasty treat, and a proper influx of players, due to the game being "new" again.

If the marketing people play their cards right with a new box release aswell, i think this could easily double the amount of players, especially if they time it right around the CO/DCUO releases.

Part 3 - Time for Science!

Rebecca walked into the science classroom and sat down at her desk after handing in her note from the counseling office, Rachel had already left for her counseling session and Gemma and Janet were discussing the latest developments in Karen’s death.

“You know,” said Gemma as Rebecca sat down, “I heard that Mr. Greenham went into the scene whilst the police were still there.”

“And you would know this how?” asked Rebecca putting on her goggles and starting to mix the chemicals as directed on the board.

“Jane said that Kim told her Michael saw him go into the locker room after showing the police some sort of ID,” replied Gemma.

“This the same Jane who said that Statesman was in school the other day,” replied Rebecca sarcastically, “And that Mr. Roberts was a hero, Mrs. Shartan was a villain, and that she had psychic powers.”

“Yes,” replied Gemma lifting the beaker with the finished chemical from the bunsen burner, “Why?”

“No reason,” replied Rebecca as she lifted the beaker to examine the liquid, “Anyone else apparently see him go into the crime scene?”

“No,” replied Gemma, “Of course, Michael and Kim deny everything.”

“They were probably snogging whilst the corridor was deserted,” giggled Janet.

“More than likely,” replied Rebecca as the teacher approached their desk, “Look sharp, here comes Mrs. Applewhight.”

The three finished the lesson in relative silence, after the lesson the three went to their lunch, whilst on the way Rebecca wondered what was taking Rachel so long. Until Mr. Greenham came through a wall backwards.

He noticed Rebecca and shook his head. “Found it,” he said standing up as Rachel stepped through the hole he made. She looked around and saw the three girls and smiled.

“Looks like I'll eat four souls today,” she said before turning back to Mr. Greenham, “Any last words counselor?”

“How about,” started the counselor, “Ollie ollie oxenfree, stop what you're doing and come help me.”

“Stupid to the end,” replied Rebecca launching a fireball at Mr. Greenham.

    29th April 2002

“So that's our argument Dr. Longstorm,” finished the Vanguard representative, “We need both your surgical skills and your power to assist us in the Rikti war.”

“So you're saying,” said Rachel getting up and walking to the window, “That I should leave all my patients, some of whom were injured in this war, just because the Vanguard want me to.”

“We are an official government body Dr. Longstorm,” replied the representative, “I could order you to join.”

“But you won't will you,” replied Rachel, “Because even if you do, I'll refuse.”

“You'd be executed for treason,” said the Representative.

“You know my powers,” replied Rachel, “You'd never find an executioner who'd go through with it. Besides, I've been working on you since you entered.”

“Your powers are to transfer pain and to make people comfortable around you,” replied the Representative, “It'll make it easier to order you.”

“Really,” replied Rachel sitting down at the desk, “Then do it, order me to join Vanguard.”

The pair sat in silence for a few moments the Representative looking around nervously, he cleared his throat loudly a few times before speaking.

“I have to be somewhere,” he said standing up, “Statesman expects me to report back soon.”

“See you later,” replied Rachel bending down over her paperwork.

    ----------------------------

A few hours later Rachel was doing her rounds when her beeper went off requesting her to go to the front desk, muttering to herself about patients who demanded to much of her time she made her way to the front desk. As she approached she felt a definite air of nervousness. when she arrived she had the shock of her life.

Most of the people waiting to be treated had moved to the edges of the room, the receptionist behind the desk looked relived to see Rachel and standing by the desk was the source of the nervousness, Statesman and Hero 1. They looked over at Rachel who smiled nervously and indicated for the pair to follow her.

I can’t remember where the debate (challenge) in the UK ended with regards to the ratings on games (should they be part of film regulation or stay self regulated), but I was certainly of the opinion that the ratings should be official as I don’t trust the game companies to fairly rate their products in all instances.

(Having said that the ratings on some films have obviously been changed for commercial reasons, so, as ever, the word independence is loosely applied.)

On the more specific subject of CoX I’ve not seen anywhere near half the content, but a rating of 16+ seems to make sense given some of the content.

    [/ QUOTE ]

IIRC the british rating system for Video games is in two parts,

    1. The game is first reviewed by PEGI (Pan European Gaming Information), if they decide on a rating it is given, PEGI ratings however are not legally enforced, my fourteen year old brother could buy The Last Remnant which is 16+.

    2. If PEGI refuse to rate it, it is sent to the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) for a rating, these are legally enforcable and are mostly seen on the GTA and MK series (MK vs. DC was the first MK not to recieve an 18 rating).

    3. If the BBFC refuse to rate it then it cannot be sold in the UK, it can however be imported from a country that sells it. The latest game to have this happen was Manhunt 2.

    Part 1 - Past Tense

“Here he is,” yelled the paramedics bringing trolley into the operating theatre, “BP 180/10, fractured ribs, broken femur and fractured skull.”

“This the guy the building fell on,” said one of the surgeons, her face hidden beneath her mask.

“That's the one,” replied the paramedic, “There were others, but this is the worst survivor, surprised he survived actually.”

“We're a tenacious species when it comes down to it,” said the surgeon bending over the body, “Let's get to work.”

    -----------------------------

A few hours later Dr. Rachel Longstorm stood beside the patients bed, he'd survive, she was sure of that, partially because of his will to survive, but mostly because of her. She sat down and winced, she'd feel that one for a few weeks, she shouldn't have wasted her power on this guy, if a hero came in they'd be finished without her, but she couldn't have let him die.

Both Rachel and her twin sister Samantha had been born with the power to share the pain of the other one, a unique convergence of magical energies MAGI had said, but Rachel was thirteen when she learned that she could absorb the pain of anyone, not just her sister, shortly after with some experimentation they discovered that Samantha could do it too.

Rachel had gone onto Medical school whilst Samantha went on a round the world tour, Rachel had excelled, her powers extending to helping with the mental pains that serious operations brought meant that she had passed at the top of her class and had immediately been snapped up by Paragon City's top hospital, she'd been there a year and a half now and was well on her way to promotion.

Her sister's travels had been well documented until a year ago, both in her letters home and in the international pages in the newspaper. Wherever she went she caused trouble, MAGI had theory after theory on the difference in personalities between the two. But all the reports had stopped a year ago, both from the mail and the papers, even MAGI had lost track of her.

A groan brought her out of her memories as her patient woke up, she put on a smile and readied herself for the inevitable questions that would come.

    Part 2 - Counseling

Rebecca sat at the table in the study room with the others, after the body in the locker the locker room had been declared a crime scene and gym class cancelled, she listened half - heartedly as Rachel announced how she knew that Karen had committed suicide. She looked at her watch and breathed a sigh of relieve as she got up.

“I have a session with the school counselor,” she said as way of explanation.

“Sit down,” said Janet yanking her back down, “You’ve just seen a dead body, they can’t expect you to galavant off to the counselor now.”

“On the contrary Miss Stevens,” came a voice from behind the group, “It makes it more urgent that she sees me.” They turned around to see Mr. Greenham, the school counselor standing behind them. “And on that note,” he continued, “I have the rest of you booked in for sessions this afternoon, and attendance at the sessions is mandatory.” He left followed by Rebecca to the groans of the three girls.

The pair sat down in the counselor’s office and looked at each other for an awkward moment. After that Mr. Greenham nodded and said, “The room is soundproofed, you can speak freely.”

“Thank the gods,” replied Rebecca, “Do you know how annoying those girls are? If it wasn’t for the hypnotic safeguards I’d have melted their brains as an affront to teenage girls everywhere.”

“That’s why the safeguards are there,” replied Mr. Greenham, “That and to help you adjust to being 17 again.”

“I screamed at a dead body,” stated Rebecca coolly, “I don’t scream at dead bodies, I’m still annoyed about that.”

“Still,” replied Mr. Greenham, “You shouldn’t be relying on the safeguards so much, they could break if overused.”

“Either sending me into a psychotic rampage or enforcing the safeguards to the point where they cannot be removed,” replied Rebecca almost as though she was reading from a textbook.

“It’s been three weeks,” replied Mr. Greenham, “You’d think you would’ve learned to operate without them.”

“You don’t have to walk around with them all day,” replied Rebecca sarcastically.

“Well,” replied Mr. Greenham, “I’ve had a look at the scene and I think that your cover is safe, they simply chose your locker because it’s the only one that the lock doesn’t work properly, as for the body it appears that Infernal was right, we have a demon in the school.”

“Why was I chosen for this?” asked Rebecca.

“Because it’s easier to lower someone’s age the closer they are to the target age,” replied Mr. Greenham, “Besides how do you think someone in their late thirties would adapt to going through puberty again? It’s much better to get someone in their early twenties to do it.”

“I hate this,” muttered Rebecca getting up.

“I hope that wasn’t directed at me,” comment Mr. Greenham.

“Of course not Stephan,” replied Rebecca.

“Hey,” said Mr. Greenham as Rebecca went for the door, “If it’s leaving bodies then it’s nearly ready to manifest, you just need to stay like this for a few weeks Amanda.”

Rebecca walked through the corridors of the school with her three so called “friends”. She hated all three of them, they were nothing but annoying gossips, but even they were right occasionally, she smiled and laughed as Gemma told them of Rikki's new boyfriend and how Martin appeared to be paying more attention to the boys than the girls, as Janet struck a new topic she inwardly thanked god for not having to hear more on the subject.

“Apparently,” started Janet as they went to get changed for gym “Karen didn't go home last night, and she's still missing today.”

“Oh my god,” gasped Rachel, “I think she ran away, you know, she always did seem weird, way too quiet.”

“Karen?” said Rebecca, “Small girl, brown hair, glasses, liked to carry around Manga in her schoolbag?”

“That's the girl,” replied Gemma, “Way to quiet though, she um'd and ahh'd a lot too whenever you spoke to her.”

“No wonder,” thought Rebecca, “She was so shy, she thought everyone was out to get her.” She didn't voice this out loud though, that would've been stupid, instead she opened her locker and screamed at the body inside.

Tell me if i'm wrong but reading that interview it looks like i13 this week, i14 early next year AND i15 centered around the 5th Anniv. Which would suggest to em that we could have 3 issues in the space of 5 months???

Nice if what I read is correct

Sounds about right, I13 is this week or next at the latest, I14 looks to be late feb, march and I15 should be shortly after CO release with the nice new graphics upgrade and a remarketed edition of the game.
