what mac is suggesting, i did.
i went over to the badges forum on my second acct a few days after getting my third and "final" ban on this account. i went on to suggest that competition for badges was ruining the game and that players should only be allowed to have a certain number of badges.

the thread got to be about 10 pages long before they realized who i was (ZOMG BAD PPPER), and went on for about 13 pages before it got locked.

    it was pretty awesome.

Really? Are you referring to melee's who can't kite you (i.e. Spines or SS toons) or who can't mez you? The reason is because when I fight stormies, I am the one looking to kite them and only move in once in a while and preferably when Hurricane is down. I don't hang around LS or tornado. And with taunt, I can kite with a little edge over them.

    @Antigonus,

On that same note, an MM, /thermal is a beast. In fact, if an elec/thermal faces off with a /thermal MM, the MM is the only one playing for a win in that match. So, elec/thermal might not be able to beat everything. Also, I have seen a good illusion/emp beat elec/thermal. With recovery aura, hib, geas, blues, and pets out, the ill/emp was the one with the initiative in that fight and he earned a good victory.
im talking about 600 total damage when cosmic burst starts to scourge, and the fact that you can hit anything and everything with rad.
  3. i forgot to add this one:

    - don't use the term "gank" around experienced pvpers; teaming is not an exploit.

    wroooooong.

you should not tell anyone how to behave in a game that is already governed by rules. free will, what con said, etc, etc. the least regulated pvp is, the more fun it is. that has always been my experience.

your open chat box equates to signed consent when it comes to this.

i think being an idiot and keeping your chat box open when you're definitely getting emotional over online text is pretty funny.

ps, i was gonna give you a nice real life anecdote about me and my best friend playing mvc during college, but i'll save that for a longer post.

pps, if you're really offput by trash talk, consider fighting enemies that don't talk back... ie, PVE.

Now, for the topic at hand, the best advice I can give to players new to PvP is:

. Read. Read everything you can, information is king.
. Don't go in alone. PvP in CoH is really team based and IMO more fun in groups.
. Remember that faceplanting is normal. You have to learn somehow.
. Good sportsmanship will get you better advice.
so you're saying that you aren't competitive-minded enough to deal with any pvp game where cross-faction chat is tolerated.

    gg.

you said it. i just rephrased it.

I didn't even look at the build but if you can get 41 points of KB protection without taking maneuvers, (which most builds are able to do, especially if you use kinetic crash in power thrust), assault is sexy.
damage gets DR'd a lot man.

pop 5 reds on a stalker with a 35% damage bonus and try ASing if you wanna see how bad it is.

back in early i13, i was gonna drop firey embrace on my dom because it was that bad. it added like 4 points of damage to my blaze.

    very different.

my first pvp toon was a fire/sonic corruptor; quite possibly the most challenging position to play in (then) i9 pvp on the villain ladder, where there wasn't as much +perception as in the hero ladder, shields mattered, caging mattered, and being in on the spike was essential. After that, i moved to dominators, and back then, playing one required quite a bit of finesse; it wasn't the damage spam of i13.. but guess you weren't around back then.

still, i think you're just bitter about being a victim of reginitus.

That's the reason there are so many Elec/Therms being played. It can beat pretty much everything with a little practice.

That being said, I think Fire or Sonic Blast paired with Pain Domination would work best for your play style. It can do alright in duels and is a great support toon for teams if you ever decide to go that route.

    Ok here we go, my experience so far on my corruptors;
hopefully this will provide a few ideas.

    - dark/cold - good toon. pretty challenging when it comes to 1v1ing, as it relies a lot on that kb. i went /mace, but should have gone /hibernate to to deal with those bad SR scrappers where i have to wait til elude drops. i mainly use it to farm for pvp ios (ie, get on regin ignore lists). anything with really good burst that forces you to pack anything other than 90% greens is a challenge.
    - fire/cold - pretty beastly. one of my favorite toons ever. yes, it is only a shadow of what it was in i12, but it is a really fun zone toon and it can destroy many things in 1v1s which my dark/cold can't; good SR scrappers, good fire blasters, etc (also use it to farm pvp ios from bad regins). still gets destroyed by every psi/em even if they're bad or half-afk.
    - elec/therm - nuff said. playing this requires 3 brain cells and can be done while eating a sandwich; but the same can be said of most of the toons played in freedom arena.
    - sonic/therm - played it from i10 to i14, then rolled an elec/therm. good team buff/debuff toon.
    - rad/storm - constantly wish it were an elec/storm, but shreds through melee more reliably than any of my other toons. psi/em and sonic/ems destroy it because my build is not as good as it should be; it can stand up nicely to a fire/em though. pretty strong toon overall.
    - fire/sonic - shelved til further notice.
    - ice/kin - shelved til further notice.
  15. Adding a Few More:
    - Never EVER EVER EVER delete a toon unless you have the same exact power sets on another toon. I cannot stress this enough. Throughout the years, CoH Devs have shown an affinity towards reshuffling what is an what isn't a fotm. A year and a half ago we laughed a /EM doms and Fire/Darks, Sonic blast was third-rate in blasters. Elec/therms were bad because the lolzy damage meant forts would kill you before running out of end or blues. Don't ever delete a toon.
    - Do not PVE too much. If you need money, Market PVP, then go PVP some more. You're not gonna get better at PVP by killing Lord Recluse 25 times a week.
    - Practice your survivability. This is the one thing we're lacking in the community right now; and while it is partially the system's fault; back when I played for UJL, there were matches where my dom was put in just so that the opposing team would chase me around and leave other, less survivable players alone (syph).
    - Don't play a regin. It makes you see the game in black and white if you haven't played another toon more extensively. That is my main quarrel with the set and why I make fun of people playing them; it removes insp management as a skill from 90% of encounters (therms being basically the only exception to this), and becoming actually good at using it requires that you stop thinking like the toon you may have PVE'd for 50 level and begin thinking of yourself as a blapper with infinite greens.
  16. there should have been pvp purples an pvp common ios, with the common pvp ios having something like a 1:10 drop rate and the pvp purples having a 1:100 drop rate.
  17. best advice i could give would be this: don't let anyone ever ever ever tell you how to play. it's your 15 dollar a month, you can tp foe people to drones if you like it, you can pop 50 reds and trow shouts if it makes you happy. push the mechanics of the game to their limit, it will make you a better a player.

    or a mind/fire.

my first dom was a mind/fire and my fondest memories of leveling that thing up revolve around "carrying" full teams around sharkhead with all the pretty controls from mind and the nice aoe from fire.

my spines/regen stalker leveled from 35-50 pretty much exclusively through ITFs. i may have used AS about 6 times max per run (for AVs basically); otherwise, wasting hide on anything other that trow spines or spines burst made me feel like i wasn't helping my team enough.
  21. indomitable will does nothing but add a pretty ornamental aura around your head when used in pvp.

    change apps.

    get hibernate.

    get frozen armor.

    get sleet.

    drop superior invis.

    get artic fog.

you seem to either be a bit new to the cold thing, or trying to reinvent the wheel. i hope you're just new.

let me use an analogy for this one.

i12: you're racing straight towards a brick wall on a 2009 camaro at 95 mph, fully equipped. if you have half a brain, you can hit the brakes, and stop before hitting the wall, or you can also hit the emergency brake and swing around it.

i13: you're driving a rusted yugo, with no emergency brakes, a busted transmission and faulty brakes. you're racing at 50 mph towards the brick wall. guess what? you're ******, because you're gonna hit it, no matter what. you just have a bit more time to say your prayers.

increasing the length of fights results in mediocre players thinking they will survive the onslaught of a more experienced player, only to realize how hopeless they are after the first 10 seconds of "fighting".

why does regen work so nice in i13? because it was already good at slowing the fight.
in i12, fighting a bad regen meant i'd spend 5 minutes running him out of breakfrees on my dom, then the next 5 farming him. that was a slow match.
when you allow for further slowing, you end up with trash like 1-0 scores in 10 minute matches between good players and bad regens.

now, crap like DR does the opposite to squishies because of how the curve works. a dark/cold will get destroyed by good burst damage because it can no longer slow the fight like it used to in i12 (unless you're fighting a downie with fire damage and no kb protection). it's the whole big discrepancy between debuffs and buffs, and melee DR vs. ranged DR.
