My first and most important point, is that the following are simply the representations of different philosophical views, I will not state which one(s) I agree with, they are simply here for contemplation
(Apologies for any disjointedness)
OBJECTIVE APPROACHES
Moral Universalism claims that all or some moral principles apply to everyone
Moral Objectivism claims that certain actions are objectively and intrinsically moral or immoral
Moral Absolutism claims that there are no exceptions to these moral judgments, commands and prohibitions in the light of circumstances.
OTHER APPROACHES
Cultural Relativism
1.) Different cultures have different moral codes.
2.) There is no objective standard that can be used to judge one societal code better than another
3.) The moral code of our own society has no special status: it is merely one among many
4.) There is no 'universal truth' in ethics; that is, there are no moral truths that hold for all peoples at all times
5.) The moral code of a society determines what is right within the society: that is, of the moral code of a society says that a certain action is right, then that action *is* right, at least, within *that* society
6.) it is mere arrogance for us to try and judge the conduct of other peoples. We should adopt an attitude of tolerance toward the practices of other cultures (James Rachels)
Normative Relativism
One should neither pass judgement on the values of anyone else nor try to persuade them to conform to one's own values
Individual Relativism
Like taste and aesthetic judgments, morality varies from individual to individual. Therefore, moral judgments are expressions of personal attitudes, desires or feelings.
Proportionalism
Ontic/premoral evil may not be wrong in context
-"One can never intend premoral evil as an end, but one can intend and do premoral evil as a means to an end, provided there is a proportionate reason" (Curran.) -
I believe it was the philosopher A J Ayer, who put forward the view that there is no such thing as a true moral/ethical statement.
Whenever you say something as such, you are merely publically displaying your view on a situation.
For example; saying "Killing people is wrong" does not make the act of killing a moral fact of being wrong. You are merely *actually* saying "I believe that killing people is wrong"
Hence, you cannot say that there are moral/ethical facts, as the actual act of expressing your support or condemnation for any act, regardless of whether 'laws' uphold it or not, is merely a subjective expression.
(If I can locate my work on A J Ayer, I'll post it up to give a fuller definition.) -
Added a few sections, and corrected a few spelling mistakes on some people's entries, no names mentioned.
Also, in working on my entries...I've started to formulate a plot... -

At the rate this is going, I'm going to be the only GGer that no other GGer has actually met in that thing they call 'Real Life'...

Only 7 months to go until I'm in Dundee rememebr? -
Blooming heck Z, I look away for 5 minutes, and about a million Places turn up!
I'm proud of my addition to the 'Misc' section anyhow. -
I've added my bits about Max, and opened up a few of the empty sections.
-
Max is an anti-hero. I wouldn't go as far as putting the 'hero' bit in. He's the shady, aggressive Federal agent type. He's not doing these tasks to help people, he's doing it because it's part of his job.
I will freely admit to god-modding WHEN SOLOING with Max, the character I have created is someone with extreme flip-side morals. The 'good' are just that, and are to be protected, regardless of whether Max personally likes them or not.
As for the 'bad', well, in Max's eyes, they've committed the crime, and being almost-above-the-law (*please* note "almost"), administers his own concept of justice, which is usually bouts of extreme violence, and on some occasions, going as far as killing a villain if the need arises. Max doesn't have a hero license to worry about losing, he's 'regular' law enforcement.
I will play to this style when I'm on my own. If teaming, I have Max 'restrain' himself, due to there being 'civilians' around. Restraining Max also means I only defeat enemies, not seriously hurt/kill them, meaning the other player's game mechanics of enemies being whisked to the Zig is not broken.
I see no problem with this style of gameplay. When I'm god-modding, it's on my own, nobody need worry about it. When I play Max, I change a few things to suit him, so sue me. When I play other heroes who are more 'good' than him, I play by the rules.
To top it all off, Role-playing an anti hero doesn't break other RP events either. I attend the Galaxy Girl meetings almost every night. The heroes there tolerate my presence, despite knowing who and what I am, the same with Nevermore (to a lesser degree of course) I presume, because, even though my methods are less moral than theirs, I'm still on the same side as them.
Just because we're different to the others, doesn't mean we're wrong. -
Just ordered my ticket, so I'm committed now

Furthermore, changing the entire objective of a mission? I'd never be able to take that seriously. It's borderline god-moding; changing something that's explicitly stated to suit your own ends. If it's left ambiguous, sure; go nuts.
[/ QUOTE ]
It worked for me, seeing as I soloed most of my way to level 40, and through about 1/4 of levels 41-49, and as I was a hero, most things were applicable, but on some misisons that didn't gel properly, it helped.
Obviously, in a RP team situation, an approach like this is less likely to work, doesn't mean it'll never work though, Finn may be able to use this method and shape it to a way that does work with full team consent etc.
That's the great thing about RP in this game, without set guidelines, you can concentrate on making things fun for yourself, without stepping in on someone else's style of gameplay. -
Or indeed, as I play an antihero on CoH, is on missions which the description doesn't quite apply to my way of thinking, I chnage the premise of the mission mentally, so I pretend I'm completing it for the ends I want to achieve.

Don't count in it, Edge asked me to to that last time round and I bloomin' forgot -
By the way FFM, does your offer still stand of a lift up there, from the Worthing-ish area? I'm more than happy to put a few quid towards petrol in return.
-
Okay, forget everything I said on GGOOC, if Andrew Wildman AND Simon Furman are going to be there, so am I!
I don't care if I can't afford to eat at Uni in a few month's time. -
Just created my costume for the Masquerade Ball, and was shocked at the lack of frilly costume options. How can anyone expect to look all New-Romantic with a blooming jacket and tie?
-
I shout "DOOOOOMINATION!" in the GGOOC global chat window, and proceed to hold an enemy, and defeat it quickly, and repeat until all of them are dealt with.

C2N: "Yes, Channel 2 News"
MAX: "Hello there, I have some very very very important information for you concerning this new 'hero' you reported on"
C2N: "Yes, what is it?"
C2N: "Well...?"
MAX: "Don't make him sing...really...don't" -

Rule 5: Leave the hat alone

I didn't realise Fury had left...especially as she helped Max with his Kronos Titan not that long ago, but welcome back to both of you, even know Prize already knows I know
-
That clears things up a little bit for me, thanks. Although I can't speak for a majority of the RP SG's, the Galaxy Girl meetings seem to have a non-codexed ruleset, that basically details the basic points, such as ((bracket)) talk for any necessary OOC chat etc.
Although it may require more work, perhaps a collection of rules for different types of RP-happenings could be established, such as one set of rules for RP-played missions, another for events held between different SG's at locations etc.
And the idea of claiming an area as 'our own' seems like a nice idea, but I think most RPers will have already established where their apartments/bases are located.
(If I come across as arrogant, blame my excessive watching of Mr T in The A-Team this afternoon)
-
I'm in favour of the ideas of helping to promote more RP 'events'and such, but a an underlying set if rules is, in my eyes, unsuitable for this particular game.
There's a lot of fragmented RP groups, who RP and have fun in their own ways, and unfortunately, the rules just wouldn't encompass everything people wanted.
Plus, with the lack of a market-system and inventory supplies, less is at stake from the 'spying' system than in SWG. -
Seeya Kaya, teamed with you a few times with the Darkwings lot, and by goodness did you own whatever we come across

I'm impressed by how you 'strategically' hold back and let everyone else do the suicide alpha-strike first.
