Quote:Posts are referred to in an URL by it's thread and post number. All the threads and posts now have new numbers, and so, every and by every, I mean EVERY link to a thread as it existed in the old UBB forums is now broke and irreparable. Can't even do a massaging of the url to get it to work since there's no way to know the new numbering system. It looks like links embedded in many of the threads are now broken, for example:
The first post in "High Beams Flashback Badging Guide (Hero)" has the link to Infamous Brads "Welcome to Ouroboros" guide http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=122075
for example.
So, if you're looking for a linked thread written for the old bulletin board, the only way to find it is through Search. Hopefully, one knows the topic and author for that link to help refind it. -

Try deleting all your old city* and coh* cookies and retry with the boards.cityofheroes.com portal.

Quote:Heh. You came across the same problem. Those links probably work for you, but they don't work for me.
Stupid vBulletin! -
See edited noted on first post. The search function is screwy. Trying to find a solution...
Edit: Found a solution, but not as elegant. The links take you to their user page, and from there, you can click on all their posts. The problem was that a search in vBulletin returns an URL with a sequential ID#. This means that the same search returns differing urls, so there's no way that I know of to post a static link to a search result that works for everyone. Thus, this workaround. -
I kept it tightly tamped down in the bile of my innards lest it be released and kill again.
Edit: Oh, I misread the title as "What did everyone do with their outrage?" -
Quote:They all work for me. If you quote my post and look at the links, they're all the same, just their UserIDs are different in the links.Oddly, only the links for Castle and BAB show any results. And I know that TheOcho has posted as has Avatea. I think Niviene has. No clue about Positron.
EDIT: could you include the steps you used to get the search results? I've had ... interesting ... results with some name searches.
If you do a search for one of their posts in the search page and click show posts, the final result is a page that has that same url link.
If you look at one of their posts, click their name, and then click on show other posts from that user, you get the same url that I linked to.
Keep in mind, you can only search once every 15 seconds and each link is a 'search'. -
Quote:Temporary 'dev list' of the main Mod/Dev posters here.Currently we do not have the Dev's or Community Digest up and running. We're working on this feature however, and expect to have it back fairly soon. At launch our priority was on stability and baseline functionality, now we can add the shiny back in.
-
I tweeted back to BAB to keep in mind that the first upgrade has a 50 foot range. It might not look good if the pet is too far away, or conversely too close.
-
I doubt any of them would post before the Digest gets fixed. They are all rare posters to begin with. If anyone sees them do so, just link their post here. This is very temporary.
-
Until they do check this thread.

My sister, Fanny, said to our brother, ****, "Let's nip this thing in the bud, and not butt heads over it."
Ah, poor Richard. -
Links finally fixed! Thanks to Devian for figuring it out.
Just remember there is a 15 second timer for searches, and that's what each link is: a search of that Dev's/Mod's posts.
Niviene
Avatea
TheOcho
Positron
Castle
BackAlleyBrawler
Note: Previous links weren't working because vBulletin saves searches with sequential id# rather than with a static url for about 10 minutes, then that URL is no longer working. -
Quote:Its all rather swish looking but given I'm unable to login properly on my preffered web browser (Firefox - it just continually needs me logging in) and having to type this in IE8 on my new Vista system, the forums so far get a thumbs down for me.

1. Text on colored gradient is not good, it is more difficult to read than text on a static colored background. This is a fact. And yet, just about every box of text is on a colored gradient.
Just because computers allows text to be easily superimposed on colored gradients or graphics or images does not mean they should be. Just because it's done often doesn't mean that it's good. It's bad. Very bad.
The only time that the background should have a gradient color fill is if the color change happens in the margins where there is no text. That can create a nice effect without compromising readability of the text. If the gradient can't be moved to the margins, then get rid of it altogether. Let the outer border boxes have gradient colors.
2. Width of the reply box is too narrow. I believe I've seen on other vBulletin boards the player controlled option of setting the width. Right now, it's 66 characters, it should be *at least* 80, though, user-configurable would be better. [For those who don't know, you can make the box longer by using the up and down arrows in the upper right corner.]
3. Put ignore user on the drop down menu when clicking a users name. Right now, we have to go to a users page and find a not-so-obvious link to put them on ignore.
4. Get rid of Quick Reply completely. The vBulletin Manual says to administrators:
Quote:So, what's the advantage of Quick Reply? It just confuses things. People still have the choice of hitting New Reply at the bottom of a thread, or, they can click the Reply button on a post they want to reply to.- Quick Reply
If you enable Quick Reply, a box will appear on the showthread.php page allowing users to reply to the current thread without needing to load the full newreply.php page.
When Quick Reply is enabled, you may specify whether or not users must click the Quick Reply icon in order to start typing in the Quick Reply editor.
If you choose not to require a click, the system will not know to which post a user is replying, making both the threaded and hybrid display modes nonsensical.
- Note:We strongly recommend that you set the option to require a click if you use Quick Reply and have Threaded Mode available on your forums.
5. Why is the font in quoted boxes easier to read than ordinary text? This one amuses me. Usually on other boards, the quoted text is tiny and sometimes barely readable. Here, it's reversed. It should be re-reversed.
6. Thanks for switching to vBulletin! Yay! - Quick Reply

Quote:Hate to break this to you, but your sig pic is one of the offenders. I've AdBlocked every sig pic I've seen so far as being a garish intrusion to the scrolling of a thread in order to read it.It's funny, there's a lot of arguing against graphic sigs because of the potential abuse, but as of yet I've not seen any major issues with huge sigs or inappropriate images. I don't see why people can't bite their tongue and wait til it actually happens and then report the user rather than try to deny a feature which allows freedom of expression straight from the word go.
Really, a huge block of a graphic repeated over and over and over again by someone participating in a discussion is just downright stupid. It's one of the stupidest forum features I've every seen. Maybe, just maybe, if there was a forum for artists and you were 'branding' yourself with sample pics of your work, it would be justified. But *nothing* justifies that block of graphics in a text medium.
I adblock about 10% of the avatars for being distracting. And so far 100% of the sig pics have been distracting. We need a feature to turn of those repeating pics in a sig that doesn't turn off the occasionally needed posting of a pic in the body of a post. -
GPU power ======
To use a current political metaphor, the power of a *gaming* PC rests on a three legged stool: CPU, GPU, and RAM.
[u]GPU[u]
Graphic Processor Unit manufacturers (nVidia and ATI) create a range of GPU chips that range from simply showing pictures and basic video, to rendering the high-end 3D graphics polygons, textures, and special Graphical FX.
For nVidia, the second number of the series number will tell you how powerful the GPU is in rendering high-end graphics from 0 to 9. So, you may have numbers like: 5000, 7200, 6500, 8800, 290. The graphical savvy of those GPUs are, respectively: 0, 2, 5, 8, 9. To do 3D gaming right, it should be 6 or higher. The first number indicates the generation. The current nVidia generation is 9000 or 200. Last year it was 8000, and before that 7000 and so on. For CoH, you shouldn't go back past 6000.
Lastly, the suffixes go (roughly) GTX > GTS> Ultra > GT >GS > (nothing) > LE
Before you get a graphics card, you'll need to make sure your power supply has enough juice to power it.
[u]RAM[u]
If you turn up all the graphical bells and whistles, CoH/V can use up to 1.3 GB of RAM. At the low graphical end, it certainly goes over .5 GB. Thus, the usual recommendation is 2 GB of RAM. Since many claim Vista itself needs 2 GB to run anything well, you'll often here people say 3 GB is needed for Vista, though, on my Vista computer, I've never seen memory usage go over 2 GB.
It's important to have more RAM that the game + operating system use, otherwise, you'll start to swap memory to the hard drive ('page filing'), which is excruciatingly slow compared to RAM.
[u]CPU[u]
For CoH/V if the first two legs above are sturdy, then a previous generation of CPU is OK. Any old Pentium 4 would work or an Athlon 2000+ and up. But, more power is better. *Any* dual core is more than sufficient. The game isn't written to take advantage of quad cores, so there's no advantage there unless you want to run background programs, which usually isn't recommended for intensive programs like a 3D MMORPG, which is what CoH/V is. -
I'd love to see the Maniac Slammers be stealthily given just Hurl and SuperSpeed and preference(range). And to stand around AP or Cap and just watch the broadcast channel.
-
Yep, can't wait for that new Mod tool: Merge threads.

I find it very difficult to bury these old forums. Especially since it's not quite dead yet. <hits forums with another blow from the shovel>

The best buy and sell for SOs for all origins at level 35+ are the stores in the co-op zones: Midnighter; Cimerora; and RWZ. Everywhere else the stores gouge you in some way.

Dark Miasma has zero team targeted buffs.
It has a Stealth/Resist Aura and Heal which is a Point Blank Area of Effect (centered on you) which yourself and your team mates can enjoy if they're close to you.
Everything else debuffs or controls the enemy which benefits yourself and the whole team.
