However, it works so I will use it if I MUST.

What I find the worse thing is the treatment of customers. People that cannot get it to work are simply out of luck?

Customers on Linux are told too bad?

I think, for a game that has recently announced "free-to-play" CoH is pushing their luck.

If any other game went free to play, we would all know the real reason...low subscribers. Regardless of how it gets spun. The last thing CoH should do is alienate players (which honestly they started to do with base builders and PVPers.

I'm planning to stay with the game as a premium member...or at least I am currently planning to. However, the only thing keeping me here is base building, and a certain other game recently added bases and hideouts to their system.

Sort of makes on reconsider his loyalties (since original beta too).

    Thank GOD for
    "C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\cityofheroes.exe" -project coh
Sorry, man, but NCSoft implemented the new Launcher BEFORE they even told us about Freedom. They just haven't made it mandatory till now, though they did say from the beginning that it would be eventually.

I like the launcher. One place to tell me what version of the game needs patching, and it's the same speed, if not faster (never slower than the old launcher).
  2. Seems like, from a casual glance at the charts, that the information you've gathered is exactly what people should have expected to see. Over enough runs, the drops find their norms, just like a good, weighted table drop should do.

You answered your own question. Width and wingspan are two different things.

Saying "It's crappy" without saying exactly why doesn't really help make it better, now, does it.

Does it load patches slower? Have you even bothered to look at the options to optimize it more to your liking? People that called it crap before using it, based on previous experience with an older NCSoft launcher, have said that this iteration works much better.
  5. The comments about Sephiroth and his "he didn't do much of anything but wait for the heroes to move his plans forward" problem got me thinking:

Isn't that the sign of a great villain? Why do it yourself when you can get others to do it for you, and they don't even realize they're doing what you want? It seems to me it would be more difficult to play the puppetmaster/manipulator than the guy that goes and gets his hands dirty himself. Plus, if the plan fails, you can't really be blamed for it because it wasn't your direct doing. Seems like the smart way to go to me.

I would have liked them to improve a lot of the TFs and SFs - anywhere from simple tweaks to an overhaul and new art...anything...so many of them just suck...
Powers team and whoever handles the TFs/Story arcs are completely different people. They would share no resources unless they were working on making new enemy groups that needed different powers than is currently available.

You can hope till the cows come home, but Synapse has nothing to do with how enjoyable a TF is.
  7. Restrictions that would stifle creativity probably aren't worth it in the long run. As long as each individual title maintains its own continuity, I don't mind there being, for example, three different Superman titles with three contradictory story arcs going on. To me, it's different writers and their take on the subject. If you want them all to jive, hire one writer and publish one title for each hero.

While happy that something has been said by a Dev, I'm still sad that nothing's been done about so many other things that would've pleased a vast majority of current and staying players.
You're kidding, right? Being able to move your base from one server to another is way bigger than anything else they could do for bases right now. Go read the comments in COH: Freedom threads about the VIP server and count how many people mention being able to move their base with them if they transfer. They'd make the majority of people more than happy just by allowing SGs to transfer as well, even if they did nothing else for bases.

Whatever else they may do for bases on top of that either with I21 or in the future would be gravy.

Which is why I'm doubting the higher tier stuff will even be usable on regular content, or if it is, it will be gimped compared to what it can do in Incarnate content.

Or the players can copy the same character multiple times to the test server and buy what that character can, claim the items, and proceed to the next copy. Even a character that only has 6 empyrean merits can, with multiple copies, buy everything. At that point everything will be unlocked globally on the test server.
Copying a character over and over is a heavy kludge. It also wouldn't help those that don't normally run Trials, but might if the costumes and emotes were worth it to them to start running them. They would have zero merits.

It would be easier to just run a script that rewards all characters currently on Test enough of both merits to unlock everything, or reward a freshly copied character at a certain date (after giving notice that the script was happening).

It was probably unnecessary, though. I think it's a good idea to have a separate channel for Incarnate-related things. Not everyone is interested in seeing Trial requests in BMT. He's not pulling anyone away from BMT. Last time I checked you could be a member of more than one channel.

Exactly. What they could do instead is just award a large amount of Emp and Astral Merits to characters, like they do for other things on the Test Server. That doesn't make them write code that won't be in the Live version.

This has always been true. The problem for some is when both types of content comes out. It would be nice if both sides got content every Issue, but some Issues just don't make sense that way. If the Devs choose to focus an Issue on Incarnates, does it really make sense to throw in some random arcs for everyone else? Content is better when it's focused.

The fact is, CoH's 2011 Q1 earnings marked an all time low. Now, that doesn't give us subscriber numbers, but it gives us an idea of the state of the game.
Here's a monkey wrench for you:

Three years ago there were more people that had multiple accounts than there are now. Revenue can be down simultaneously with a static population, which is more likely what's happened. I've seen ten times the people that have just dropped an account or two, yet are still playing, than have just up and quit all together, and not just on Champion.

Less subscriptions (notice I didn't say subscribers) is a product of the economy, not people's desire to play.

Please know that I am a strong proponent of this game, and I give the rednames a lot of slack.

But this is UNACCEPTABLE. You should not have let this go live with this bug. This ENDS these trials, it is totally broken, and you KNEW it before beta went live.

Do what ever it takes to get this fixed, and DO NOT let this kind of asinine behavior show its ugly face in i21, or you WILL NOT attract new players, I promise.

I love this game. It is one of my favorite things ever. But this kind of neglect is seriously unacceptable. It's like letting cars go out the production door without working breaks. (Okay not THAT bad, but as close as you get in MMOs.)

Fix it, or pull the keyes trial from live til it's fixed. This is the opposite of fun.
Sorry it happened to you, but if it happened more often, they'd have fixed it before it went live...just sayin. Bugs are funny that way.

Firstly, the City of Heroes player population is at an all time low.
How would you even know this without being on Paragon's staff? Even if every one of your friends left the game forever tomorrow, that doesn't mean there's less people playing than there was 6 months ago. It just means your friends left.

You could say "I've been having a hard time finding teams to do X for months" but the game goes through periods like this all the time. It's summer, school is out, it's vacation time, Issue just dropped, etc etc. All these things contribute to lower numbers this time of year doing the standard stuff that's been in the game for years.

One thing stood out to me though:

    *****spoilers*****

I felt like Patrick Dempsey's character's actions after the invasion was just wrong. He was either dumb enough to believe the Decepticons would honor some sort of deal they made (before he knew what he was helping them do), or he thought he could still win their favor by continuing to help them by preventing Sam from interfering with the Rods. Either way, he should have seen the writing on the wall, if he was as smart as they portrayed him to be earlier in the movie, and had some sort of Prodigal Son turnaround at the end. It would have made more sense than him continuing to fight Sam till the bitter end.

To be fair to San Diego, the vibe is way different than LA, or SF. It's big, but it's not near as hectic. Plus you can't beat the weather. It's worth going to visit, if anything.

I've lived in both San Diego and the Bay area. If I could afford it, I'd be in San Diego hands down over anywhere else I've lived, though the state political and economic scene is a big downer.

So now, instead of simply asking to not be buffed, they have to not be anywhere near anyone who might be buffed to avoid whatever health issues the buffs bring out for them. In other words, logging on now becomes a health hazard.

This is not an improvement for those players, and it is something that the dev team can't claim didn't know could be an issue. It was brought up well before it went Live.

They announced the change without considering all the implications. Then they chose to push it live anyway once it was pointed out. I find it to be rather unfathomable that it's considered acceptable for them to introduce a "feature" that actively hurts a portion of the player base after those players had been able to avoid it for for the most part for seven years.
The range of the AoE is pretty small. You can easily avoid it once you establish how big it actually is.

They've also been actively looking for effects that are causing physical problems, so if you've got some specific ones in mind, PM Tunnel Rat. She is the one making most of them now.

Seriously, though, can the PR and devs and others at Paragon please attempt to include villains in write-ups. I know we're a minority, and the game will forever be known as CoH (soon to be CoHF), but a token effort would be greatly appreciated.
If your villain is doing something heroic in someone's eyes (saving Primal from Tyrant and his forces), they'll be called a hero by that person. That's the way it goes.

Redside on any server is lower because many people have migrated their villains to Paragon City. That has nothing to do with overall population.

Because you're not paying more for the same thing. You're paying to get more things for the same price you've been paying every month. You're also not wasting real money on parts of Booster packs that you either don't need or don't like. Everyone that's ever bought a booster just for one costume, or one power, or a couple of emotes, and could take or leave the rest of it, should be ecstatic about this model.

Pessimism and looking for conspiracies won't serve you well in the long run. Everyone who thinks the boogeyman is out there will eventually find one, usually after making one up just to be right, or making a mountain out of a mole hill.

But because movies that do play it safe are so bland and dull they are uninteresting and tie that with the disappointment factor and the score gets lower.

Where as a movie like Transformers 2 which a lot of people feels is one of the worst, if not the worst big budget movies ever gets a higher rating... not cuz its better in terms of technical craft but because the wreck is interesting as are almost all wrecks
And everything you just said here is YOUR opinion, which is why trying to compare one thing to another is impossible. You might think GL is worse than Thor, for example, but someone that thought Thor was garbage would disagree with you, and you'd both be right and wrong at the same time.

The only way a comparison would work would be to compare two movies about the same character, like Tim Burton's Batman vs Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins. At least you can say one director's interpretation of the source material was pulled off better than the other. Comparing Hal Jordan's movie portrayal to Superman's is dumb.
