    SD Defense

Yeah, there isn't anything particularly strong about defense. There's only something particularly strong about 45% defense. And 45% defense, on its own, doesn't make you invulnerable. Try anything nasty, and you'll still go down. You need a total package. But on most of those total packages, soft-cap defense is a "must".

It seems like what we're hoping for as players is for there to be a wider palate of options to make the top end characters. I'd take Regeneration as a good example, since it doesn't use soft-capped defense, yet can still be very, very solid with the right build in the right hands.

I'm sure the devs understand that soloing on +4x8 is not the norm. That capping or nearly capping DDR on a Shield Defense is not the norm. That even the soft cap is not the norm, probably even on level 50 Super Reflexes characters.

I'm very curious to see what the incarnate levels will bring, and how that will affect the status quo for the top end builds. But the devs shouldn't be focusing their balancing efforts on those builds. Nice to have, but a lower priority.
  2. This thread was necro'd, and you're reading ancient history. I believe that Shield Charge has long since been nerfed. I barely noticed, but I wasn't farming with one until recently.

Yes, Castle had numbers he originally intended - big damage up close, lower damage further away. When implemented, some mistake was made that put the big damage at the full range. Castle and/or QA didn't notice. Then Castle approved using the AT mods for Shield Charge. But I believe the ended up using the wrong AT as the base, so Scrapper damage went through the roof. Castle apparently wasn't even involved in any numbers checking on that one, so QA fail. Compound error. I'm perfectly willing to believe that they made stupid mistakes instead of that they intentionally tried to lure people in then punch them in the face. Luring people in then punching them in the face is not how you retain customers, and customer retention is about all a really old game like this has. But believe he's a big liarmouth liarmouth if you want. Makes no real difference. What is, is.

It is amusing that Shield Defense was once considered very blah. (Edit: I was in the "blah" camp. Looked OK to me. Nothing special. Shred had the foresight to expect it to become the top set.)

Even with the nerf, it's arguably the top secondary.
  3. I'm not saying I like it, but it is working as designed. Same with the 64% to hit of Devouring Earth in tip missions. Don't bother with purples when a quartz drops. You either kill it in a couple seconds or you run out of its range.

They run towards me on my Fire/Shield. On the other hand, I'm just standing there letting them whiff till I think everyone's in range. Then it's nuke and move. On my Katana/Dark on the other hand, there's a lot of chasing. Don't farm with a Katana/Dark is my advice after having done quite a bit of it.
  5. I don't think you're missing anything obvious. Damage or stuns. I'd definitely go damage myself.
  6. I'm not sure about optimum farming technique yet, but I've started farming (bosses off) with my Fire/Shield/Fire to see how it goes. Currently, I'm doing one x8 spawn per Build Up cycle, which recharges in 26.6 seconds. Jump into spawn, wait for them to gather, Build Up, Shield Charge, Fire Ball, Fire Sword Circle. About half the time there are a few survivors, often due to them not aggroing. Maybe take them out, maybe ignore them. Move to next spawn. I don't feel like I go any faster if I start attacking the next spawn before I have Build Up, as they're more spread out, sometimes they'll run, and I just end up wasting all of my time on single targets instead of just wiping out entire spawns all at once.

I think I'd need more AoEs to go faster. Actually, I'm just not sure how I could go faster unless I had more really big radius AoEs. It takes almost as long to get to the spawn and for them to gather as it does for my Build Up to recharge.

    SD Defense

For leveling, unless you're playing Tank with your Scrapper, I'd settle for 32.5% defense, which is plenty doable. That puts you one small purple away from the soft cap, so every purple is a one minute God mode. That's usually plenty unless you're pushing the survivability envelope, in which case you'll want to keep pushing your defense further. Typical good end game Shield Defense builds have 45% defense to all positions. As Rodion says, this "soft cap" isn't a true cap, but just minimizes the chance of most enemies hitting you. It's not just even level minions, but pretty much everything up to +5 levels to you. Exceptions include pets, anyone with a build up, if you're suffering from defense debuffs, and so on.

I am gonna reroll mine as a stalker so thats 2 less toggles I have to deal with and maybe that might the difference on endurance.
My soft-capped Katana/Dark was endurance sustainable, and that was with Cloak of Fear instead of Oppressive Gloom. Mind you, that was before the IO nerfs, and he isn't any more. But it should be a solvable problem, particularly in I19. I wasn't sustainable leveling, but it wasn't horrible, just had to make sure everything had sufficient endurance reduction. Frankenslotting my attacks helped tremendously.
  9. As a specific example, my Fire/Shield is built for AoE damage and not for survivability or DPS or endurance sustainability. I don't think he could survive a pylon. So when I wanted to check his DPS, I brought along a tank, turned off most of my toggles, and went to town. I consider what I measured to be more or less my DPS, even though I couldn't actually sustain it for more than a couple minutes without the help. In practice, for what I actually fight with that toon, I never have endurance problems because blue skittles rain from the sky. And the highest I fight is elite bosses, for whom the DPS I measured applies with no problem.
  10. You really have to set up artificially-difficult situations before endurance sustainability starts to become a requirement. I wouldn't want artificial situations to be part of the definition for a basic term like DPS. Most of the time, it won't matter, and you'll have time to recover between spawns and even micro recoveries moving between targets.

Granted, we often talk about DPS in the context of soloing pylons and AVs no temps no insps. Maybe that should be "endurance sustainable DPS" to distinguish. Because we need even more terms.

And to me, that's the goal for a defense build while leveling. 33% is enough for most situations, and when it isn't, a single small purple is your god mode. More is nice, but is almost more "fun to have" than "gotta have" at that point.
  13. I'd guess the best is Electric/Shield with massive recharge, but haven't done any math. Just a guess.

My Fire/Shield feels like it has very good sustained AoE (near perma Hasten, Fire Epic).

In a market forum thread, Fire/Shield and Electric/Shield were the top Scrappers for farm speed of the few that took up the influence per hour challenge. That could easily just be a sampling problem, though. I don't remember what other Scrappers participated, and don't know what sort of builds anyone was running.

Even though I'm still leveling, my Electric/Fire feels stronger for AoE than my Fire/Shield or my Spines/Dark, but I suspect it's because I'm level-pacted with a tank that loves herding, so it's all burst, pause, burst, pause. Great, great burst damage, combined with serious squishiness in my case since I don't have to worry much about survivability. Or wouldn't, if the tank didn't like aggroing several groups and letting them filter in as their friends go down. New enemies tend to like me!
  14. You're not going to hit 45% smashing/lethal at your level or without a lot of planning and influence, but that is the eventual goal if you stick with it. Pushing the other types of defense is also a good idea. Hit points are a good idea, but less important than defense. Resistance would be good, but it's too difficult to push it. Regeneration is the lowest priority since you're already swimming in it.

Definitely pick up Tough and Weave.
  15. Well, if you were shooting for old school regeneration, it's not really there. You can get MUCH more than that. On the other hand, what you've put together is going to be a much better build than one with crazy levels of regeneration, so I'd stick with it.

I'd be a little worried about defense. Yeah, you have Shadow Meld on a really short timer, and Moment of Glory as well, but then they'll both be dropped at some point. I suppose that's when you burn through your heals. Might be fine?

Moment of Glory really doesn't need to be slotted for defense or resistance. Set bonuses are always nice, but I suspect you can make better use of the slots and still get good bonuses.

Honestly, though, I'd go Dark Melee/Shield Defense. I consider that the top AV soloing combination, at least if speed matters.
  16. In no particular order, and specifically for AV soloing no temps no insps, I'd say Super Reflexes, Willpower or Invulnerability. Willpower might be your least proven commodity there, but I don't anticipate any major problems. Regeneration should be able to pull it off, but I think is moving down a notch. I don't think I'd try it with Dark Armor, Electric Armor or Fiery Aura. Well, if I had one, I'd try it, but I wouldn't specifically start one or build one for it.

Since you already have a Dual Blades/Regen, if you want to stick with Dual Blades, you could certainly go after AVs with that, unless you just want to start something new. That one depends a lot on budget, though, since you want buckets of recharge. I suspect that 30% melee, Shadow Meld, and all of Regen's tricks at a high recharge would get the job done. Broad Sword/Willpower could probably pull it off at a much lower budget point if you want to consider that. But Dual Blades probably has more of the AoE goodness if you're trying to make a general-purpose toon instead of a dedicated AV soloer. And who makes dedicated AV soloers any more?

I like both the sweep and AV combo's, so I guess it will be tough to maximize his single target and survivability. I wouldnt mind a build good enough for some AV work. I know it can be done, as one of the pretty good times on the Pilon was recorded by Broken Preys DB elec I believe.
DPS is less important for AV work than you might imagine. Mostly, it just speeds things up. Serious survivability is what you need, and I doubt that Dual Blades/Electric will deliver. A few might be possible with a very focused build. Or maybe it's easier than I think, and someone will post to say, "No problem, I solo AVs all the time on my DB/Electric".

    Active Defense

    I don't remember it being answered before. I assume you're three-slotting it?
    17.3% base

    3 +0: 20% * 3 = 60% before ED, 56 + (0.15*(60-60)) = 56% after ED, 17.3% * 1.56 = 26.99%
    3 +1: 21% * 3 = 63% before ED, 56 + (0.15*(63-60)) = 56.45% after ED, 17.3% * 1.5645 = 27.07%
    3 +2: 17.3% * 1.5690 = 27.14%
    3 +3: 17.3% * 1.5735 = 27.22%
So... not much difference if I'm calculating it right. Probably more so if you two-slot, but still probably not very large. Only worth it if you're rich and have mental problems that don't let you settle for anything but the best. (Yes, I'm slotting 53s.)
  20. Hmmm, the Performance Shifter proc is worth more than a common endmod IO in Physical Perfection. Kinda need the Kismet for +4s. Could sacrifice a Stamina slot, but that has a significant effect. Could give up on the hit point bonus. Hmmm.

Well, tell you what - I'll need to fiddle and do some calculations, but it's probably a better starting point for the fiddling than what I posted, and makes me think that for sure I19 will solve the problems if this doesn't. Thanks!
  21. Well, I can share my current build, but the whole point is that I18 wrecked it. As it is now, it isn't soft-capped and isn't endurance sustainable.

Hmmm, I don't see your name in that thread. A search doesn't show you posting in that thread. A search only shows you posting in a single Scrapper forum thread - this one. Are you saying you're the second account of Frosticus or something? You'd almost have to be, since you seem to be claiming that you're one "of the more recognized min/maxers", and it's hard to be recognized when you only have a handful of posts. So should I call you Frosticus? Frosticus, neither of those top two numbers are Scrappers, very few non-Scrappers are posting in that thread, and thus your results have no real competition. Your numbers MAY be awesome, top of the heap. But that thread gives zero evidence of that, and I don't have enough experience with other ATs to have any idea.

I don't think Arcanaville was telling you that you don't know how the game works. You may have a deep understanding and serious play skills. I believe what Arcanaville was doing was laughing at the idea that she doesn't know how the game works.

It seems you want to say that Arcanaville asked the question wrong, and should have asked for an AV soloer, or whatever. Yet it seems like a whole lot of people in the thread understood the spirit of the build challenge, and have submitted reasonable builds for consideration. I'm not saying that Arcanaville couldn't have been more clear, but perhaps the communication problem is not entirely on her side?

It also feels like your putting min/max in a smaller box than I'd put it in. You seem to be saying that a min/max toon is an optimized AoE machine designed for destroying large spawns. Then there are AV soloers. Then there's everything else. That seems a bit too restrictive to me.

I do STRONGLY support what you say about DPS being only one measure, and a typically overused measure of damage output. In regular play (whatever that is), DPS is not what matters. AoE is king, and burst is queen.

That said, I abide by my DPS chain in actual play. My recharge rates are generally carefully tailored, and I've trimmed out all other single-target attacks. If I'm attacking a group, I'll use any AoEs I have, assuming I even have AoEs, as frequently as possible. But other than that, it's the DPS chain, because to do otherwise is to simply skip attacks, wait for preferred attacks to recharge, and simply do damage more slowly. This may not be the case with most people's builds, as most people take more attacks than I do (such as Arcanaville in this example). But I'm a minimalist when it comes to attacks, so the resulting toon is "stuck" using the DPS chain only. Another thing to note is that I rarely fight whites on a mature toon. I'm often fighting as much uplevel as I can, quite often +4x8. I'm not going to burst my way through anything. The time it takes is well into the DPS realm, and I'm going to be using my DPS chain, and for quite a while.

That said, if all I'm after is kill speed, I'll drag out my Fire/Shield with massive recharge and go to town with AoEs. It's what he was designed for. But I don't consider him any more or less min/maxed than my single-target specialists, or my general-purpose-with-AoE-but-not-AoE-focused Scrapper.

If I feel like doing AoE to plow through spawns as quickly as possible, I'll dig out an AoE toon. What I WON'T do is try to optimize EVERY toon for AoE, even if AoE is king. Not every toon is suited for that role. If I feel like playing them anyway, like my DM/SR, I don't think that means I'm not min/maxing the toon. A DM/SR min/maxed for AoE in regular team play would probably be a pretty retarded build, beaten by a huge number of alternatives.

    Bah, late for work.

Take everything from your secondary but Elude, and if it's your first time with Super Reflexes, you might want to take Elude just to see if you like it. Fitness (Hurdle, Health, Stamina), Leaping (Combat Jumping), Fighting (Boxing as a wasted pick, Tough, Weave) and probably Speed (Hasten), but consider Leadership (Maneuvers, Tactics). If you buy no other IOs, pick up a Steadfast Protection unique and a Kismet unique while you level.
  25. Yes, a Scrapper Fire/Fire will be even more squishy. You can build it to be a little more survivable than baseline, but you'll probably end up sacrificing one of its main strengths - damage output. To me, the way to build and play a Fire/Fire is like a blapper with mez protection. Think of it that way, and you'll probably be pretty happy with your survivability. Compare it to a regular Tanker or Scrapper, and you'll probably be deeply disappointed.
