  1. All done!

    Midnight Passion

Didn't get her quite as finished as I wanted. Many areas that could use further development, but its getting close to my bed time =P

    Hope you like it, EnnVee!
  2. OK, I'm back (got a 95 on my quiz on Gothic architecture), and I believe I have a winner.

According to my personal tastes, I'm naming EnVee's Midnight Passion the hottest chick submitted!

I'll be back in a bit with a pencil drawing =)
  3. OK, I can't believe it, but I actually don't have homework tonight. I'm also waiting on an approval on my in-progress commission, so can't do anything else on that right now.... but I feel like banging out a quick drawing this evening.

I COULD go through my other thread where many characters have been donated, but my God I'm lazy. So I'll just hold a mini-contest for a free pencil drawing!

********BEST SUBMISSION OF A HOT CHICK WINS!!!**********

I only feel like doing a chickie because I've done an over-abundance of a male model in figure drawing.

I have to read a few pages and take a quick quiz for an online course.... so I'll be back in.... about an hour. At that time I'll choose a winner.

    Good luck!
  4. Cashoo just plain mother****ing wins.

There is a VERY good reason to not use smudging/blending stumps/whatever. Its particularly important to stay away from such things if your art is intended for reproduction. Scanning/photographic equipment has a heck of a time with subtle variations (even high-end stuff) and you'll often get more of a mush. But if you slowly build value in layers of cross-hatching, there's enough information there for lenses to work with and you'll get markedly better reproduction.

This isn't something that has to be kept in mind for every piece, but because I'm going for an Illustration degree, I try to not smudge my pencils even in my non-core courses. Its a good practice for me to get in since I want to do art intended for reproduction in most cases in my career.

Your teacher could have just been being an ***-hat, I don't know, but there are some really good reasons behind teaching shading that doesn't involve smudging with your finger or using a blending stump =)
  6. Well, when you come down with Cadmium Red Fever (a strain of Scarlet Fever), you use an Art Leech to remove the foul humors from your blood.
  7. Because TA touched on it, I also don't like having an "Us vs. Them" thing when it comes to the working artists and the art appreciators. Why can't we all be cheerleaders together for art?

I'm only speaking for myself, but I don't want to be put on a pedestal. I don't want my work to be put on a pedestal or somehow... shrouded in mystery. I want art to be accessible! Not everyone is going to be the next great master, but EVERYONE CAN LEARN ABOUT ART.

Personal example. This week I happened to have some strong pieces I've done this semester with me after my mid-term portfolio review. I took them into work to show my dad (we work at the same large company), because he hasn't seen any of my traditional stuff for quite some time. So some of my co-workers were looking too. This lead to the age-old comment of "Wow, its so amazing that you can do that. I can't even draw a stick figure!!!!!!!!!" When I hear comments like that, I'm very quick to point out that anybody can get a lot of benefit from studying drawing technique. It doesn't involve magical incantations and alien technology. My favorite response is "You know we start with stick figures in figure drawing?"

There are many many quite teachable aspects about good artwork, and that can grow a real appreciation for art and artists. I'd rather not tell people that they can't POSSIBLY understand how I suffer for my craft... I'd rather inspire them to hit up the local museum and take one of the figure drawing or sculpting or painting classes that's open to the public.

Anyway *jumps off the soapbox* this thing is free now =)
  8. Yeah.... I think I'd sooner tear my eyes out with rusted tweezers than drop out. But I appreciate the sentiment!

I'll be free again... uh.... someday. The commissions should look much nicer afterwards, though!

I like this. I agree that changing names between here and dA can make it hard to find people sometimes. I TRIED to get Wassy, but some person who doesn't even use the account had it. Jerk.
  10. I like giving away free art so I can run my experimentations. I also like being paid, but haven't had a day of difficulty grabbing and running my commissions since I launched my site. Overall, THIS COMMUNITY has made my budding artistic aspirations nothing but a joy.

So... whatever this system is, it works for me. I couldn't read through every post on the entire thread (I should be consulted as to when you people are going to start posting novels so this can only be done when I have a free weekend, GEEZ), but I figured I'd throw in my actual experience so there wasn't an over-abundance of hypotheticals.
  11. Thanks everyone!

And for those reminded of Roman copies of Greek statues... that's what it is. I believe this particular bust was of just the head of the Venus of Milo. It was large size, so good to work on for a first go with portraits. I couldn't fit it all on the scanner (the image on dA is stiched together as it is), but if you could see the whole piece, you could tell it was a bust statue, as I sketched in the base so the drawing wouldn't be floating around in space.
  12. You know, its pretty darn neat when you can surprise yourself. All semester, I was somehow pretty darn sure I would fail in my Figure Drawing course once we started studying the face and doing portraits. I just NEVER do realistic faces or have bothered to try much. Its a big shortcoming I was afraid to face.

    But... apparently...

My first stab at it wasn't too bad.

I know its not CoH, but I'm sort of shocked and rather pleased! Thought I would share.

Critiques are still fine, and I'm still in the process of learning!

    Drop... BEARS?!

    *uses Eddy as an umbrella*
  15. I can only vote for Jophiel's Lounge Crooner. I happen to know how fun this character is to work on, so want Foo to be blessed with him =)

Don't count it if you don't want to, but that's my opinion!

Still tired... but now its due to having like, swine flu or something. *cough, hack*

Eddy, you have to remain vigilant all night anyway. You live in freaking Australia... close both your eyes for any length of time, and I'm sure something poisonous and spiny will make your chest cavity its new summer bungalow.

Like, completely exhausted. Is anyone else really tired? I so am. Midterm crunch or something.

Yeah, freaking TIRED. This thread shall be the place to go when you NEED a nap. Indeed.

    MMOart

    Good deal.

I honestly hope he never sells art on his own again. He needs to work for a studio, or at least have an agent to attend to the business side of things.

  20. Good luck! I know full well how fast the cost for art supplies tallies up >.<
  21. Got a couple studies from my figure drawing course up on my dA page. They're studies of nude casts of classical Greek/Roman sculpture so.... I guess NSFW, though I consider artistic nude in a category of its own and not something to keep away from the children.

Anyway, check em' out if you're curious. They're photos so the quality isn't perfect =/
  22. BWAHAHAHA, I'm very sorry if you did.

Back from vacation? Was it worth the wait?
  23. Sorta, if you count Foo molesting ice cream. Which we all do, of course.
