Bah... goodbyes suck. But its not goodbye... just don't be a stranger on dA!
We'll be watching @_@ -
BWAHAHAHAHA!!
Shia, you terrify me. And I love you for it.
I deem all entries thus far as qualifying =)
EDIT: FYI, Shia, I submitted your piece into the January FArt Competition gallery folder for the City of Heroes group. I believe you just need to approve this (should be in your messages on dA) before it will show up. -
Thanks, Caemgen.
I also would have taken a burning baby chicken. Anything that was a specific nod to the rule in an effort to have fun with it is excellent.
You brought up a good point... I had a thread going for a month before the January theme even went up detailing my intentions for the contest. The January theme has been up since December... there's already been more than enough time to bring up any ill feelings. So now its way past time.
People who don't like the rules don't have to play the game. It isn't like this is an officially sanctioned contest or for any prize. This is something that Juggertha started up, and I don't know if you all realize this, but I specifically was given permission by him to run it this year.
If someone wants to have a concurrent Fan Art competition going with different rules or a different set-up, go for it! There's nothing anywhere saying the boards can only handle one contest ever and that's it.
The long and the short is; I've gone over this a bunch of times, made suggestions, Shia still has time to either convince me himself or take any of the numerous suggestions, and I've made my position quite clear. So I consider the matter closed. -
Yes, pieces that set out to change the entire Olympic format to give it a super-powered spin are perfectly acceptable. Its all in your set-up.
From the description FD gave me, I'm thinking his piece will be fine.
The difference is that he very clearly intended to bring male and female contestants together for his piece. The difference is the clear intent. When I look at Shia's piece, I don't see any clear intent to abide by the Hot Chicks rule. And I'm also clearly not the only one who saw it this way... because it was pointed out before me. There was nothing showing that this was a co-ed race (as will be clearly shown in FD's piece). You could just as easily say the foot in the pool is an oddly-shaped balloon as you could that it is female, based on the CONTEXT.
Heck, if there was a high heel on it, I would have taken it. That at least would have shown acknowledgement of the rule, and maybe even a little tongue-in-cheek way of showing his feelings for it!
I feel really awful about all this going back and forth arguing about Shia's piece. I hope he takes all the suggestions everyone has come up with as a sign of how much we want him to stay in. I love that tattoo suggestion, among others. Goes to show you guys can come up with ways of using the rule to your advantage to come up with something interesting and creative.
Also, Shia can always pop in to plead his case if he feels he's been really wronged here. Or PM me. Whichever =)
EDIT: You darn people have to stop posting while I'm typing and making some of my comments irrelevant! -
PM'd asking for more info on the piece. Or a small version of the piece would do too. Not fair to judge it on limited information and all.
-
Do you generally do your sketches digitally? Or do you start with pencils and stuff like that?

Quote:Sorry for a double post, but CR edits his posts like its nobody's business!I know not everybody is willing to speak out if they are bothered by something but I personally have no problem saying what I think in this regard and to me it's no different than being restricted to a theme each month... it may put some limitations on what we
can do but it also levels the playing field and forces people to be creative. I'm ok with that.
Yes, this is truly the spirit of the rule. I didn't feel it was a gigantic limitation (far less than the themes), and could be an interesting challenge. If someone wanted to go totally Where's Waldo with it, that would be so fun! I also wanted to in some small way, put my own personal stamp on the year's activities. I couldn't think of any more fitting way to do that than to ensure a bevy of ladies every month.
Also, the feedback I've gotten so far has been overwhelmingly positive. Pretty much everyone got the joke, saw the fun in it, and is happily moving forward.
I think I've been far from an absentee FArt Mistress, and have put a lot of effort into making this year accessible, clear, visible, and FUN.
BUUUUUUUUUT, everyone is indeed entitled to their opinions. It is what it is, and its just silly to think I can please 100% of the people 100% of the time. So I'm fine with that. I mostly would like to just leave it at that now, so we can gear up for the quickly-approaching deadline and enjoy everyone's efforts!
MOVE YOUR BUTTS, ARTISTS!! I'm looking at you, Swanzy and CR ^.^ -
-
Well, I would be sad to see Shia drop out over that. I think we can all agree that we love to see his work! But in fairness, the rule was clearly stated (even before the theme went up), and the other entrants have kept it in mind, worked with it, and had fun with it.
If its a deal-breaker for him, its a deal-breaker.
I'm being a stickler for any rules this year because I want to avoid the grey areas we ran into last year, as it rather soured the fun. So while I'm flexible and working in suggestions (such as doing a month where eliminated entrants can win their way back in), we already know how it can turn out if the rules are overly lax. -
Yes, I would accept a hot chick tattoo as meeting the hot chick requirement =)
This is the fun of the rule. Its an extra (albeit pretty minor with you guys!) bit of challenge, and can be done pretty creatively.
And I like boobs, of course. -
OK, since I've had the question posed to me privately, I just want to re-iterate that if your entry this month is disqualified for not adhering to the rules, you WILL NOT be entered into the competition.
I went back and forth over this since its a head count month, but I really don't think its fair to everyone to set any precedent where someone submits a disqualified entry, but continues. Everyone gets treated the same in this.
Again, this is why its to a competitor's advantage to submit a piece a little early, so anything that would disqualify an entry can be caught early, and has time to be fixed! I'm really hoping Shia takes the time to have a hot chick off somewhere in the distance, because I rather like his entry.
I'm going to post February's theme shortly after the voting gets going for January so you guys have plenty of time (and because February is a short month). Trying to do my part to help the contestants do their best!
Still keep throwing me any suggestions to improve the competition if you think of anything. Thanks, guys!
-Your FArt Mistress -
Thanks for the crit, CR =3
Yeah, I think the biggest area I would change would have been the shadow under the sword. I believe I was thinking backwards. That happens sometimes! -
I definitely want to see you join in if you can, Frost. I'm quite keen on getting the graphic designers in on this, because I know there's a lot of creative types around here that can make fan art of City of Heroes, but maybe not necessarily your standard character pin-up. This is also why I'm hoping DrainBamage can get some sort of sculpture entry in. It would be totally awesome to see a bunch of different sorts of artwork entered!
Ooooh, a spanking! Now I'm being rewarded for being derelict in duty! -
Quote:Ooooh, yeah. Good call Draggynn. I was just enjoying the scene and not thinking about my rule-screening! Bad FArt Mistress, bad *slaps wrist*Very funny Shia! Although I must admit, I'm confused as to why a woman (who I am quite certain is hot) is in the same pool with Mako in the top pic.
Shia, I'm gonna have to disqualify this if there's no hot chick in the piece. The food (er, foot) is clearly another contestant in the pool, who would be male based on Olympic standards. You've got until Friday at midnight! -
Does having a boob obsession count as a style?? =P
-
Glad you're joining the fray and tossing in some graphic design stuff, Pyro! I was definitely hoping some designers might get in on the FArting, because as Lousy_Day showed us with the sun catcher entry last year, "Fan Art" covers a WIDE array of media and ideas!
Bwahahaha, what would a FArt Competition be without Shia's sense of humor? Very happy to have you along! -
Final piece in my little sale as been completed. This one goes out to Missy K!
-
In 100% honesty, I totally did not see the hood thing until CR pointed it out. And now I can't stop seeing it!
-
I really don't have any problem with the comments thus far on the thread. And I definitely don't see how any are relating to making this into a popularity contest?
As your Friendly Neighborhood FArt Mistress, little derailments give me ideas as to how to keep improving the competition. I pick up ideas from odd places (and OK, I won't REALLY do a Rocky Horror theme month, but other random things you guys say do start the gears a turnin'). We haven't even gotten to where we're doing eliminations yet, so I'm more than flexible as to implementing improvements.
And, as I mentioned before, it should be a bonus to the artists to be able to get this feedback on their pieces before voting. I don't take any submission as final until the deadline, so tweaks can be made. If anything, the more comments we get during the submission phases, the better a display we'll get in the end! -
>.>.....
You know, I routinely watch Rocky Horror, Firefly, and MST3K regardless of if there are people around or not, because I find them all DECIDEDLY NOT LAME!!!
And that's a GORGEOUS entry, LD! -
-
What the heck would be wrong with a Rocky Horror Heroes challenge?
