No particular theme in mind. And don't kill yourself over it! I'll be happy with any surprises, since I'm asking people for this purely out of the kindness of their hearts. No demands =)

!!!!
I actually rather like that matchstick idea. Change and acceptance would be a good theme for a young audience.
And don't worry about the art part... that's my job ^.^ -
Bubbawheat-
It ALMOST works. The only thing keeping me back from qualifying it is that its more like a Redbook than a Maxim or somesuch. If you go the magazine cover route, I'm looking for a pin-up type mag. Or if you're doing a cover and opting for romance, something like a Harlequin novel cover. -
No Marxist revolutions! And yes, total lack of blood and guts would be exactly what I'm going for =)
For this project, one of the big parts of the grade is if you effectively spoke to your target age group, so I can't be illustrating overly complex subject matter (since I want to do this for the little ones). I also want to keep it simple, since people will be volunteering their own valuable time. A pretty short and simple children's story will do.
I would LOVE to see someone be able to pull this off with a CoH theme. How cute would that be? -
If anyone who actually travels to any other parts of the CoH boards, which I generally do not, could please spread the word about the vote, that would be awesome. Anyone with an account is a fan of the game, and is free to vote for their Fan Art Champion.

Hey writing-types, I need a little help if you're interested. I'm taking a Children's Book Illustration course at college this semester, and the semester-long project is creating a 32-page dummy children's book (like one would submit to a publisher). So... I need some text! We're allowed to use classic fairy tales or non-fiction subjects, but that's a little dull. We're also allowed to use original work with permission, and that's way more fun!
Would anyone care to write a short story for use in this project? I want to do a book for early readers, ages about 6-8, so at the most a paragraph or two of large print text per page (or even no text on a couple pages). Most of the book is black and white comps, but at least 2 pages need to be fully illustrated, and I thought that might be interesting for someone.
Subject is flexible, just keep the age group in mind. Unfortunately, I would need this by Monday, Feb. 1st at the latest. So if nobody is up for it, no hard feelings. Just thought someone might be interested. Thaaaaaaaaaaaanks -
Nope, I have not thought of the RP forum. I don't really go outside this forum *xenophobe*

I think I'm going to have to bring a psychiatrist in to help some of you dear entrants. You can't seem to tear yourself away from themes of violence and gore when I give you a romance theme! I believe there are underlying issues.

Yeah, just throw me a PM once you've settled on an idea, LD. That would be the best way to go.
No matter which you pick, romance or pin-up, just keep a cheesecake frame of mind. This goes for everyone. I want both the romance and pin-up pieces to share a common thread, so light-hearted and over-the-top is the way we're headed. -
Oh yeah, you'll definitely have to vote for 3 different pieces. Everyone will need to figure their top three, and this should solve any elimination problems pretty well.
What do you mean by "dark" exactly, LD? Subject matter or colors? I just want to make sure, because people could end up doing dark-colored characters in a cheeky pin-up. And that's fine. -
Quote:I like this point system. I think we'll implement it for the February voting. Though I assume 1pt goes to their 3rd choice, heh.To me it reads that the category is Pin-Ups and that Romance is but an alternate theme for those with moral objections to the real theme...
As for voting, with this many entrants I think a 3pt, 2pt, 1pt system could work well until the ranks get thinned a bit... Each voter would award 3 to their first choice, 2 to their second and 3 to their final selection.. With three votes each we should have a bare minimum of peeps with NO votes at all. It would also make it possible for someone to not get the most overall votes but still win a month, which would be fun
I probably wasn't very clear, but its more like Romance with the option of doing Pin-Ups. I'd personally like to see more pin-ups, because I'm a lecher, but its more that we're doing super-hero Valentine's Day with the ability to be racy about it.
What I said about fantasy, fun, frivolity still applies. I don't want any Romeo & Juliet suicides or that sort of thing. Keep it light-hearted (pun intended, so eat it!!!). -
No, you're allowed to vote for yourself. Most participants don't, honestly. But, as shown in years past, almost everyone never thinks they're really the best. Humble bunch of weirdos they are ^.^
-
Hopefully my reasonings for qualifying the pieces you found on the fence were adequate for ya, JK =)
Just to reiterate in case anyone missed it, I will always be judging more on your intent than your execution. If an entrant intended for a character to look like it came from the CoH universe, then they are abiding by the rules and qualified. If what they pulled off didn't get that intent across, then that's a weakness in their entry, and is exactly what the rest of the community is voting on. -
Yes, black and white is still fine. I probably won't ever have a color requirement.
-
Yeah, but if memory serves, people seemed to hate voting someone out like that. I'm just willing to do a new system if someone has a better idea.

LOVE IS IN THE AIR...
... and restraining orders are being processed! For February we're going have a little romance, and the option for a little extra. Yes, in honor of Valentine's Day, and because I'm very bad at delayed gratification, the long-touted pin-up month is NOW!
For this month's theme, I'm looking for some classic pin-ups. I'm thinking along the lines of Alberto Vargas (or Olivia DeBerardinis for a recent example). Think fantasy, cheesecake, frivolity, playfulness. Your piece does not need to be a direct pin-up, but must be in relation to it. What I mean by this is that, for example, the graphic designers might make a magazine cover, or perhaps an ad for a cabaret operating in Paragon or the Rogue Isles.
If you are deeply morally opposed to the world of the pin-up, a piece centering on romance is also acceptable.
Again, all art types are acceptable for this month's theme.
THE RULES
1. Keep it R-rated and Under
Yep, nudity will be fine, but anything worse and you're out. Please PM me for more clarification if needed.
2. DO NOT DIRECT POST R-RATED PIECES
We're all going to be abiding by the 2-click rule. The competition page on my site will be programmed to 2-click. Please still put your pieces in your personal dA galleries.
3. Use City of Heroes/Villains Characters
These do not need to be signature heroes/villains, but your piece must either be a personal character, or in some other way related to the game.
4. The Hot Chicks Rule
Your piece must somehow contain a hot chick (interpret that as you will). Probably an easy rule this month.
Deadlines
All entries are due by FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 19TH AT MIDNIGHT US EASTERN TIME. If your piece cannot be direct-linked, just throw up a message that its done and in your dA gallery, and I'll get the 2-clicking going. As in January, I'll be screening all entries for adherence to the rules. What I put up for vote is deemed legit, and that's final.
Its in the artists' best interest to get their entries in with time to make a change if it falls into disqualification. You can also get feedback on your entry and strengthen it.
Other Items of Note
THIS IS AN ELIMINATION MONTH!! The winner of the January Battle will carry immunity into this month. If they submit a qualifying entry by the deadline, they cannot be eliminated regardless of vote. The person with the least votes this month will be eliminated. If there is a tie in this, we'll have some sort of sudden death elimination. I'm open to suggestions as to how to handle that.
Please feel free to respectfully voice any questions or concerns.
As always, above all else, have fun while you're kicking butt and challenging yourselves, artists!!
*confetti* -
Ok, I'll get it up Soon(TM)
Just give me a little bit since I didn't plan on getting it up today ^.^ -
Here we go, its time to cast your vote for your favorite entry in the January FArt battle!
This month's theme was The Olympics. A full description can be found HERE
You're voting for the entry, not the artist. Keep in mind how they interpreted the theme and if you feel they effectively presented that interpretation.
I have already determined that all entries put in for voting qualify under the rules. If you really feel that one does not, PM ME ABOUT IT. That discussion does not belong in this thread.
There will not be an elimination with this voting. The winner will gain immunity from next month's elimination, provided they submit a qualifying entry.
VOTING WILL CLOSE ON FRIDAY, JANUARY 29TH AT MIDNIGHT US EASTERN TIME

I've uploaded all the pieces to the FArt Competition 2010 page on my website
I used the artists' comments from dA and added my own thoughts to each piece. I get traffic from other boards and stuff that I visit, so hopefully it will bring you guys even more acclaim. Check it out! -
*stares at the gorgeous globes*
Clutch... those are beeeeeeyoooootiful! -
Should I get February's challenge up the same day as the vote, or give the vote a few days to get attention around the boards so as not to be confusing? I'm planned through I think June, so the contestants can let me know what works out best for them.
