when i first heard about the series getting made, and after flipping through the Song of Fire and Ice RPG, i thought it was time to at least grab the first three books of the series and give them a read through. after getting through the first one and most of the second, i am looking a lot less forward to the miniseries, and might just give it a pass altogether. it's not that the writing is bad, it isn't. but dear gawds is A Game of Thrones just utterly gorram depressing. worse, far too many of the characters i like either get offed or they don't get enough 'screentime' to make up for having to put with characters i generally despise. it doesn't get much better in the second book, and after a while i just had to walk away.
i might go back and finish up the three i picked up eventually, but i dont know now if i really want to see what an onscreen adaptation of the series is going to be like. -
partially, it also depends on how the character is written. a different person in the role doesn't radically change who the character is, just how the character is interpreted. it's no different than when another actor takes over one role from another actor. sure, Keaton, Bale and Conroy all played him differently, but he was still Batman. Also there weren't that many jarring changes of the voice cast from the movie back to the cartoon series.

Quote:wasn't there an article that came out a couple months ago claiming that by now, Bendis had written more Avengers comics than anyone else in the business. well i guess that makes him the definitive Avengers authority now.You forgot written by Bendis.
*EDIT*
Aw damn now I can't get the image of Bendis as Gollum clutching the Avengers titles out of my head.
*twitch*
wow... i think im starting to hate comics now. -
they may be canceling Thunderbolts, but hang around for the exciting new superteam... Avengerbolts and it's companion book Criminal Avengers! From the House of Ideas!

Quote:did a double check using the wiki article, and it pointed me at the DC wiki, which confirmed some of these bits. seems Krypton was in the Milky Way Galaxy, only 50 light years from earth. It moved temporarily to the Andromeda Galaxy during Birthright (and i guess it was in another galaxy during the Silver Age, so for the movies it mightve been in another galaxy as well) and has since been put back in place, and is actually in space sector 2813 (the one right next to the sector including earth).Superman is supposed to have traveled across several galactic empires and to the outer edges of the known universe of what Krpytonians knew... and Krypton is supposed to be one of the several great galactic empires...
Not to mention if we apply the regular DCU Krypton is one of the most advanced cultures in all of the DCU... They're power apparently rivals that of the gods and guardians and such...
as for how advanced Kryptonian culture was, they were up there, but i dont think they were ever really considered among the most advanced. they were just among the most vicious since they learned early on that exposure to different suns had varying effects on their physiology. -

...and of course to send this over the top, at the end of the film, Bruce Campbell and Jeffrey Combs need to high five as the parting shot, with the rest of the cast, looking on, as the hair metal starts to play for the credits.

Quote:im a big fan of M&M. it's just that the generic-ness (frak it, im running with the term!) inherent to the system was one of my biggest gripes with it. the DM and players had to do just a bit too much work in order to make the characters with different powers actually feel any different from one another. i knew about DCAdventures, but i think the game designer logs mentioned there was going to be some other changes when M&M3rd hits, because some mechanics were kinda being field tested for the DCAdventures book.Actually 3rd edition is effectively out already in the DC Adventures book. I picked that up a couple of weeks ago and the rules were completely different from 2nd Edition M&M.
As for the generic business, yes it would be extremely generic. However that's how you can make balance work (IMO). Beyond basic mechanics of how things work, and those should be independent of color, everything should be changeable.
A laser should be a lightning gun, should be a heat beam and whatnot. You just add in special effects later. This allows you to get the balance right up front, and then start filling in color later without screwing up the balance.
I suppose the twinks in all of us (and I min max like a madman) won't like it, but it (again IMO) makes for a better system. You don't end up with RIFTS like abominations.
Anywho, looking forward to laying hands on that when it comes out, and when ive got the cash for it.
As for Gamma World. Ill wait for my friends to pick it up and thumb through it. Ive no real interest in dumping anymore cash into 4E than what i absolutely need to play the game. -
Quote:it's been a while since ive seen the movies. but do they actually say Krypton isn't in the Milk Way Galaxy? also, i'd always assumed some sort of warp travel was involved anyway. if you can accept being under a yellow sun gives a guy super powers, assuming the folks that sent him here had FTL tech isn't exactly a big leap. It's interesting that noone brings up that it only took him five years to reach a galaxy on the other side of the universe according to the superman movies... Good thing there are some theories that pretty much say that superman's flight is warp ^.^ and that in DC there is the speed force.

Totally dug the first movie and didn't mind the change from horror/action to full on action for the 2nd (no matter how stupid it got), but the 3rd was an abomination against film. Is this new one any better than that, and is it worth shelling out a full ticket price for? (im not paying for 3-D, because thus far with that particular gimmick, there hasn't really been a movie worth the extra cost)

Quote:yeah, not like he had a readily available database of the entirety of Kryptonian knowledge available to him to be able to make whatever changes were necessary so he could make the trek back to the ruins of his homeworld or anything.Kryptonian crystal tech is self-repairing and infinitely reprogrammable, at least according to what's been done with it in the comics.

Quote:this is New York, even now, how many folks actually look up? so yeah, you could be on fire and most of those folks aren't really gonna care. also in swings spider-man and out walks... some dude, in NYC. if it were somewhere else i might buy that somebody would pay attention, maybe.I mean spiderman has the most obvious form of travel ever, whenever he swung into a dark ally to change clothing there should be about a million people near by watching him 'cause their is no way to stealthly swing around in a bright red suit.
but then again, i liked it when Parker revealed his identity to the world at large.
Quote:Hows batman any less ridiculous than the punisher operating in a world of super powered people? Especially given people like Superman could bring him in any time he felt like it. He uses non-lethal force so there's always witnesses. Figuring out who he is wouldn't take much longer or perhaps would be easier because of that. Oh that's right, he's the gosh darn batman, he gets a free pass on everyone's disbelief while a guy with guns or a bow somehow so much more unrealistic. No they make as much sense as squirrel girl.
Like the punisher, batman does best when he's in his own book far away from any high powered supers. Bad @ss normals are really jarring in books with people who are on part with superman or silver surfer. They need stay in the shallow end of the pool.
also, im not quite tracking how it would be easier to figure out who Bats is just because he doesn't kill anyone. not looking to sidetrack the thread, so shoot me a pm so we can properly gnash our teeth at one another.
as for the FrankenCastle thing, i havent read any of it because im not a big fan of Frank's. But the concept behind it is kinda amusing. It's not like he was going to stay dead anyway. They already tried that once and it didn't stick, so i don't see it sticking now. (oh look, it didn't!) To me it isn't whether or not they kill a character that would torque me off, because if a character dies, then at least someone cant screw them up. (generally) -

i dig M&M, but the only problem is that i think the system tends towards being a bit TOO generic. once you figure out attack/defense bonuses, it's pretty much all just flavor from there. at least in 2nd edition, there is a 3rd coming out in a month or so.

we get Booster Gold, but we get the alien Beetle?
also, there is too much promised awesome this season. it looks cool, but then the 'Doomsday' season looked promising and look how that thing ended. please dont let 'em **** up Darkseid. -

Quote:remember the days when it wasnt whether or not folks recognized a property to begin with that got them into the theater to see a movie, but whether or not the movie was interesting enough to go see it? pity.heh, the bane and fear of all producers. Is this character well liked wnough to draw the crowd.
Quote:Yeah, but the Jon Stewart exposure will counter the Hal Jordan character. Some viewers will expect Jon and will be disappointed/angry with Hal.
It's like how so many people here consider Wally West to be The Flash. Barry Allen will always be the Flash to me. -
Quote:you know, i can grok that you didnt like the '86 film. but really, we're going to pick on the fact they actually had known actors doing the voices and DIDNT use them for the cartoon series afterwards? at the time, there was no way the series would have had the budget to keep those folks on payroll. They tossed a bunch of different actors who did the 86 film that didn't really fit. Like Spock doing Galvatron just doesn't work for me. Then they dropped all of them soon as the movie ended.
also lets be honest, the series was ALWAYS about giant robots fighting it out. that they 'transformed' wasn't so much an integral story point as it was the selling point for the toys they were pushing. -
an 'Expendables' style cast, with Bruce in the lead in the same style as 'My Name is Bruce'? ... i can't... the awesome... my head...
*POP!* -

IIRC isn't First Class supposed to be a prequel to the franchise and take place during the 60's or 70's? might explain the outfit. the bright side is that it's a 50/50 shot at being either pretty good (like the first 2 Xmen movies) and piles of crap (like the other 2 x-movies). doesn't mean i want to shell out money to go see it, but hey, slap enough explosions and big effects on screen and most folks will line right up to see it.

the animation for the GIJoe thing looks alright, but "Renegades"? eh? Also, the cast for the TF show looks cool, but those designs. Ew. Just... ew.

mmm, Nightbane. wouldn't use that one though, definitely After the Bomb, but i think i'd also toss in Heroes Unlimited for the rest of the insanity.
