I'm sorry, but that's not how I see it. PvP and PvE have been made separate for a number of reasons, not least of which because PvP is borked to hell and gone. A lot of people like the fact that this game's PvP is only in the PvP zones. In fact, spreading it through the PvE zone would only further dilute the existing PvP population, not to mention open up opportunities for griefing. No thanks. You have good intentions, but /duel is a bad idea. Just use the arena that's already been coded. We don't want a lagfest because people thought it would be cool to battle in highly populated areas.

When I said "just look away", I was demonstrating how easy I felt it REALLY would be to ignore the mechanic if you really didn't want to partake in it. You can't just look away in a Rikti invasion. With my setup, the worst it would be is something going on in the corner of your eye that, maybe, you might just sit down to watch unfold.
Not quite. See previous statement about griefing potential and lag, no to mention teams slowing down while teammates /duel over e-peen size.

And if you did THAT, then the mechanic would be justified - because it allowed someone watch what could have been a nice hero vs villain battle.
If you want to watch a PvP battle...GO TO A PVP ZONE AND WATCH ONE. Don't inflict it on people who aren't there for it.

Not all MMOs are the same. CoH is a niche market, and as such, has license to do things differently from others in the same genre. Technically, MMOs don't have to do -anything- other than collect revenue in exchange for providing a game that makes use of an internet connection. In my opinion, your argument comes across like "All desserts should taste like chocolate, and if you don't like chocolate, you shouldn't eat dessert."

Seriously...calm down. They're just making sure that they don't screw things up, and I don't blame them. It's frustrating, but I'd rather they take the time to get it right than rush it and end up doing a rollback or something equally maddening. BTW...your post is a bit ironic, given your signature.
  4. Would anyone be willing to give step-by-step instructions for how to use the updated test or beta server files to bypass the updater? I've never done that before, and I'm not sure how to copy the test or beta install over and "trick" the live server downloader. Could someone please post an "Updater bypass for dummies" instruction manual?

Edit: Forgot to mention that the NCSoft updater shows that I'm up to date on the Test and Beta Servers, but not the regular game. At the rate I'm downloading the update, it'll be done in...maybe 8 hours

Speaking of irony, I'm getting the general impression that at least lately, the biggest advocators of the social element in this game tend to act like complete and utter jerks while promoting their position. I get the feeling that they want to force others to interact with them because no one would want to spend time with these people otherwise. This is most readily evident in server consolidation threads, but it also pops up in threads about the new incarnate trials.

Really, being social is absolutely -wonderful-, and I'm glad people want to play together. That doesn't mean it should be the -only- way to play. There is nothing wrong with seeking out a smaller sub-community on a less populated server. There's also nothing wrong with wanting to solo. If you think that makes these people antisocial, fine, you're allowed to think that. But if you feel -disdain- for them to the point where you dismiss their opinions and desires as paying customers, ridicule them, and even seek out ways to make their lives difficult...you're even more antisocial than they are.

EDIT: This coming from someone who teams, plays solo, AND does trials.

  7. I'm sorry, but a F2P hybrid model isn't a roundabout way of crafting your own lifetime subscription. That's not how it works.
  8. I'm still a little confused--is there a way to directly send threads from one of your 50s to another, or do you have to convert astrals? I have a lot of threads on one char that I'd like to send to another.
  9. I have to disagree, for the reasons people mentioned the last few times this came up:

    "I play in two locations:
    • At work.
    • In the living room with my family where we socialize or watch TV.
I do NOT want to feel pressure to be speaking aloud to my teams in either of these environments.
If it were built in to the game, I know that I would feel that pressure."

    "No thanks.

There are some decent third party team chats out there - use those.

But please don't add a tool to this game that others will "demand" I use, even when I don't want to do so. I hate listening to the sound of my own voice, and I also think that hearing the voices of others who don't match my mental picture of how the character should sound would take some enjoyment away from the game for me.

And frankly, there really isn't much in the game that requires tight coordination of a team provided by teamspeak."

"Ever been to a team where everyone but you is on voice chat? Yeah, it's not fun. Right now, such things are rare, restricted mostly to people who know each other. Build it into the game, though, and they will not be.

That, and I don't enjoy voice chatting with strangers. However, I KNOW there will be pressure to voice chat anyway. I voice chat with my friends and family. That's it, that's the extent of it. Since English is not my first language, I'd rather not resort to it over something as trivial as that. And I don't want people with English worse than mine to be pressured, either. Nor do I actually want to LISTEN to people with English worse than mine."

EDIT: Forgot to mention bandwidth concerns.
  10. I really like this idea. I hope it gets the wheels turning. /signed!

  11. *Unclenches her fists, takes a deep breath, and counts to ten before responding*

No thanks. This has been brought up many times before, and I /unsign it every time. In my experiences with F2P games, they typically suffer from:

    1. Annoying gates: I don't like being nickled and dimed for every possible method of progression. I've seen Vanden's little "see how we can stick them" game in action, and it's irritating in the extreme. Even though it's a relatively small amount of money, it feels like extortion in practice.

    2. RMT'ers: They are -everywhere- in F2P games like rampant cancer.

    3. Griefers: "Hey, if they ban me, no big deal. It's not like I paid for this or anythinglololol"

So, no. I'd rather not expand the trial accounts here. As mentioned earlier, they -constricted- them, and for good reason. I know you want to bring more people to CoH, and I think that's awesome (keep it up), but this is really, really, REALLY not the way to do it.

    So yeah.. no thanks.
Here's another vote for NOTHING. Ironman competitions are all well and good, but not everyone wants to participate, and not everyone plays hard to kill characters like scrappers, tanks, and brutes. People shouldn't be penalized for playing faceplant factory ATs like blasters if they want to do so. And really, if you insist on a debuff every time you die...just turn off another of your mitigation toggles each time you die. If you want to go to jail, then use the ouro portal to send yourself to Nebraska and walk back. Nerf -yourself- rather than call for debuffs for everyone else. "But Valerika, if I do that, no one will want to play with me! They'd say I was being pointlessly hard on myself and taking the fun out of the game for everyone else." Right. Think about that for a minute.

[EDIT]: When I say "NOTHING", I mean don't change the current death/debt system. I'm not calling to abolish debt altogether. I just mean leave things as they currently are
  13. No thanks, I'd rather not have to trade concept for min/maxing capacity. I like origins exactly where they are--inconsequential.

It's not insanity. It's good game design to allow people the same opportunities for soloers as team players. Up until now, team play would definitely bring you serious advantages over soloing in terms of greater rewards for shorter time, but soloing would still get you there. Also, isn't it a bit anti-social to call people crazy just because they're anti-social?

    Quote:
Similarly, I think it's more than a bit arrogant to insist that everything the developers release must also cater to a style of play that is antithetical to what makes an MMORPG fun.
Soloing isn't antithetical to an MMO. At least not one that wants to cater to a wide audience.

    Quote:
If you really are so antisocial that you cannot stand playing with other people for the duration of a task force now and then, then I hate to break it to you, but boy, did you ever pick the wrong genre of game to get wrapped up in.
There again, this doesn't match current COH experience, only your very limited interpretation. Just because you WANT this genre to require teaming, it hasn't, for the most part.

    Quote:
I suggest venturing out of your comfort zone a little and giving the MM aspect of the game a shot.
I'd suggest venturing out of your comfort zone and wrapping your head around the idea that soloing is a viable playstyle option for a superhero MMO, no matter what color you make the MM part

    Quote:
Worst-case scenario, you hate it. Well, suck it up and do it anyway.
I find it more than a little ironic that you, who are in favor of forced teaming, rather than those dirty soloers, come across as so horribly obnoxious. "Suck it up?" People who say things like that must love forced teaming, because otherwise, no one would want anything to do with them. I prefer to team for fun, and not because I have to "suck it up" or "take one for the team" or "go outside my comfort zone" or any of the other silly catch phrases people use to describe being forced to do something you dislike. Please understand--NO ONE IS SAYING THEY WANT THE TF OPTION REMOVED. THEY ARE JUST ASKING FOR ANOTHER ROUTE. That's it. That's all.

    Quote:
If you just can't get past it, though, then I really am sorry that the game doesn't suit your style of play.
I think I speak for a great number of soloers when I say--I have absolutely no intention of quitting over this. All I'll do is just ask the devs for more options, and pray they come through the way they did for earlier content, including pre-i19.5 Alpha. This game is wonderful, and even if they never add an alternate path, the game is great. However, if you choose to ridicule people for asking for that option, or tell them to "suck it up", I think that says a lot more about your intolerance than their supposed lack of genre understanding
  15. You'll love it here. And a word of warning about the buffet--if the chicken tastes funny, don't eat it. Some of the catgirls have gone missing lately.

    Just sayin'....
  16. No thanks. This isn't even really all that funny as a forum joke.
  17. I'm very encouraged that so far it seems like only a few people are exhibiting this behavior, but there are a lot of people swearing that they would never act like that. The good guys seem to be winning, at least on the forums.

We already *did* pay $10 to $30 for The Rogue Isles (CoV) and Praetoria (Going Rogue). And, unlike the often arbitrary gates that usually exist in F2P games, that money actually was well-spent in terms of value added to the game.

    Quote:
But it's entirely possible that this would not generate an acceptable return on investment for NCSoft and that they would have to start charging extra for every little thing in the game. It's not the way I'd like to see things done, but I'm not in charge of any online game companies, so I can't say for sure what needs to be done to make money.
The ONLY way most F2P games stay in business is by nickle and dime'ing their playerbases to death. That's annoying, but what's even more annoying is the demographic it attracts. Without the commitment that comes from monthly subscriptions, people are more likely to show up for short periods of time, act like a troll, and get banned. Why not, they didn't have to pay anything, so losing their account costs them zero dollars. FREE LULZ. Ugh. No thanks.

    Quote:
This game has had many good improvements lately such as the inherent Fitness powers (should have been done ages ago) and the alternate animations and coloring of the powers (should have been built into the game from the start). Still, the game is not growing in certain ways that would make me want to play more. Most missions are static; the enemies just stand in clusters as you move from from one to the next.
And I'm sure that under a F2P model, these problems would get solved SOOOOOOOO quickly.

There are few cutscenes and no voiceovers.

If there is ever a City of Heroes 2 that modernizes and improves the game I will definitely check it out.
I think that the devs are doing a pretty good job of "modernizing and improving" CoH on their own, thank you. They're making very good use of subscription money and recent additions like the Incarnate system and Ultra Mode seem to justify their current subscription-based model.

That game is so good, the controls so smooth, that I've played the entire campaign 3 times.

Mostly, though, I just jump on once in awhile and do a few quick Special Ops missions. There is no leveling and no subscription fee. That's what I wish I could do at this point with City of Heroes. Jump on and play a few missions without it being a lifestyle choice of dedicating hours and hours in order to make progress towards those powers I want. And of course, I wouldn't pay $15 a month to do a few missions once in a while. That's why the subscription has to go.

I actually have two friends who used to play CoH with me. But they are casual gamers and they refused to spend $15 a month and grind out the levels. I bet I could get them both to play the game with me once a month or so if there were no subscription and no leveling.

Thanks for all the replies by the way. I expected much worse but you have all been polite.
So, given your example, what you really want is a console game version of CoH. That might actually be pretty cool. Why not just ask for that as a new, stand alone thing instead of recommending that they gut the MMO version of CoH? That way, you'd get your console game (that doesn't charge a subscription rate), and the rest of us would get to keep our MMO (that recieves regular free updates, new content, etc)?

That's definitely a matter of perspective. I'm guessing you were on a largely ranged team? The few times I've run Apex, I've played a melee character on melee-heavy teams. That doesn't pose a problem on Tin Mage, but it it's pretty hard to stay in melee long enough to do significant damage on Battle Maiden. In order to be effective, you have to stick and move like a small, fast boxer against a bigger, slower opponent. It's not impossible, but it's definitely harder.

Quite frankly, I enjoy enemies that require me to think like that, especially since it's still possible to beat them without any specific AT on my team if you use good strategy.
  22. I'm sorry you think that the Tin Mage TF is too hard. Try the Apex TF, it's much, much easier.
