    I would like a pay-for-beta option.

  5. So, $500 for a lifetime membership and guaranteed beta access? Count me in (x3 accounts). Heck, I'd settle for a paid guarantee to be in on beta testing. Say a one time fee of $50 per account and you are guaranteed to be in betas.

  6. BTW I am loving the RWZ thing. I would love it even more if they ensure that the generic repeatable missions can be done by level 1 characters. OR ELSE if there is an AE in the RWZ.

Is there an AE in the RWZ? I would love to do some AE teaming in the AE (or RWZ generic missions) with villains and heroes together from 1-50.

Yes, sadly, it is going away. A dev said that the new super side kick system will over-ride the AE rules.

But hey, its all good. People will still Farm, PL, AND do normal content. They will be less aware of each other going forward. This will be nice because then farmers and PLers will no longer be under the crosshairs of the RPG catgirl team-with-me-or-else-nerf crowd. Well, at least not after they've got their fill of triumph and glee. Which could be never.

Unlikely. The AE is just so darned convenient. It is a vat of goodies (missions, xp, tickets, money) from which you dont have to even move. It is like a Ryans buffet. Pile on some more steak and blueberry cobbler!

It is slower, but it is also easier to arrange. This isnt a blow to multi-boxers or to AE XP farms, in terms of ending them. It does make the level gains less ridiculous. But, you'll still see farms happening, even though you can set your mission to X number of players as desired. You'll still see power leveling going on, it will just be slower. Farmers are sometimes social too, and so you'll still have the same thing happening. It isnt like the farming or the power leveling is preventing people from joining your RPG catgirl boom box dancing team. It is the AE that does that. It is just SO convenient.

What you will see end is bridging requests.

Back to power leveling, a patient farmer will still power level friends or alternate account characters. You know, it is Saturday, a friend is online, the two of you bring 2 or 3 heavy killers and a bunch of level 1 alts on other accounts, and you run a bunch of AE missions or farms. Get on teamspeak or vent and chew the fat. Hang out, whack stuff. Do that on Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, 4 days in a row when on vacation, etc. After a couple of months, you'll still have a shiny unplayed power leveled character sitting there, ready to roll. You know, instead of having 4 power leveled characters sitting there waiting for you, which is what you can do with bridging.

    So, slower, yes. Easier, yes.

Speaking for myself, farming is fun. I'm not one of the ones that finds it boring. However, it isnt the farming itself that I find fun, but the repetitive nature of doing something I like (zapping bad guys) over and over. The AE lets me have all the variety I need (if I even need any) without moving my location. Effectively, this results in farming (repeating behavior with a loot benefit) even though the primary purpose/result is fun. ZAP BANG POW.

In fact, when I settle in for a bit of AE play, it IS relaxing, and fun. I wouldnt do it if it werent. Side bonus: mega-tickets!

  11. I would say 8 Illusion/Storm controllers. However, you said no more than 2 of an AT. That kinda sucks. Hmm.

If I can't mix sides, I'd say (based more on fun than damage potential)

    Illusion/Storm Controller x2
    Storm/Energy Defender x2
    Energy/Fire Blaster x2
Invuln/SS Tanker x2 (for Hand Clap)

Basically, crazy knockback For The Win! Of course, the Tankers would probably want to kill themselves.

If I can mix sides (COX, COH) then I'd do:

    Illusion/Storm Controller x2
    Storm/Energy Defender x2
    Energy/Storm Corruptor x2
    Thugs/Storm Mastermind x2

EDIT: plus, 8 stormies slotting Steamy Mist for defense and taking maneuvers would generate (assuming worst mastermind numbers for everyone) like ... 80% defense. Tight. And you'd max resists from steamy mist even without slotting it for resists. YUM.

    Storm/Knockback FTW!

Again, that is all fun factor, not "most powerful" or "most flexible".

  12. Positron,

I appreciate the fact that you communicated your thought process about bridging in the announcement of this new feature. That means a lot to me. While I personally enjoy bridging (and I never spammed for bridge requests) on occasion, I can accept that it is going a way. That is due, in large part, to you addressing the issue directly, rather than leaving it an unspoken issue which people would then conjecture / gossip about to no end.

As to the other aspects of this (easier teaming), I am all for it!

    Lewis
  13. HotFlash,

The AE definitely increased my farming tendencies also, though it is not because of the farming itself. It was because I dont have to go anywhere. Basically, I'm lazy.

Prior to the AE, I usually just ran level 50 door missions over and over. I didnt even run them to farm purples or anything, I just enjoyed frying bad guys. I'm a like a latch key kid eating a fish and chips tv dinner every night: it never gets old, and I look forward to the next tv dinner every time. There was tedium and irritation though, but not from the zappin'. I would have to get another mission after each one, travel and port my team to the door, and sometimes zone-reset when I didnt like the foe types. I also got stuck with missions way far away or in caves. I hate all that crap, but for the gameplay itself, I love it and love to repeat it.

Along comes the AE. I can just do AE content over and over and over. No travel. No maps I dont like. No foes I dont like. As much or as little variety as I want. It is a dream come true. The only down side: no purples. However, the huge up side is that I earn tickets, which lets me roll on the random crap shoot of the ticket vendor for gold (and other) recipes. I love that. I never had that available to me before, so I'm happy as can be. In the last 2 weeks, I've managed to roll 3 Numina recovery IOs and a Miracle, not to mention a TON of other stuff that sold for a lot. I've never had it this good.

Now, I know you'll say I could do story arcs and task forces and earn merits. Well, actually, no I cant. I dont like doing Task Forces because I have a short attention span. I can do the same thing over and over and over for 8 hours, but I cant actually pay attention to mission details or negotiate with TF missions and zoning and traveling. Also, the inability to bail without feeling like (and being) a ********* kinda makes me dislike them. Also, I'm only in the mood to team with strangers about 10% of the time. I dont like waiting on others, and I dont like that they may have to wait on me. Also, story arc merits are out of the question, again, because I have to do a bunch of travel, fight foes and stories I dont like and have done before a million times, plus again, I feel I cant abandon them whenever I like.

So, now, I can hang out in one place, play any character I've got, earn Tickets, redeem them, and do only the thing I enjoy most, which is zapping bad dudes over and over in various configurations with various powers. It also lets me get at the heart of what I like most about gameplay: character builds (planning and implementation). When it is time to plan and implement a character, I can just make him at level 1, plan him with Mids', make a couple of other level 1 characters I like on my other accounts, and just 3-box these guys from 1 to 50. It might take a few months, but hey, thats a few months of fun, zapping, levels, tickets.

So, really, the farming aspect is totally secondary, in that farming isnt the goal or purpose, but it is a result. I effectively repeat content I like, and gain pretty good rewards from it. The only reason it might not be considered farming is that I'm not doing it to farm. I'm doing it because I am having fun. Wasnt it George Carlin who said something like, "you ever go in the kitchen at 3 am and get a bag of chips or cookies, open the thing up, stare at the clock, eat the whole *bleep bleep* bag, just stare at the clock and eat until you are done, and go back to bed?" Yeah, George. Me too. RIP!

  14. I have an Illusion/Storm at level 50, and he is tied as my favorite character in COH (tied with my Earth/Storm controller). However, Illusion/Sonic is decent too. I have one around level 44-45 or so, I believe. I havent played her in a while.

Its a decent combo, in the sense that any Illusion combo is decent (tho Illusion/Kin is awkward). I enjoy Illusion/Empathy, Illusion/Rad, and Illusion/Storm more (the other combos I've played to high levels).

I'm not sure if there is a guide.

Here is a sample build. I put in cheap sets, but I tried to slot it in an order where SOs and generic IOs would at least be functional. Power Boost (BTW) doesnt work on Sonic Shields, or it used to not do so. I just took it for the heck of it, in this build. It isnt even the epic I picked on my character (I went psi). Oh, also, yes you can cast Disruption Field on the Phantom Army, or you used to be able to. That is a nice ability to have.

  15. I have a villain named DiamondFist. As a kid, he always wanted to be a scary ninja assassin who struck fear into the hearts of all. Other kids even beat him up for saying it. As it happened, his dad had ties to various ninja / underworld groups, and arranged for training for his son. The kid practiced and trained, going from one teacher or school to the next. He kept telling the kids who beat him up that one day, they'd fear the name of DiamondFist. Unfortunately, the reason he kept going from teacher to teacher was because he SUCKED as a ninja. He just couldnt get it. The teachers kept kicking him out. His father viewed him as a failure.

By chance, though, he was a mutant, and he developed his powers around the age of 20. He had the powers of Earth and Electricity (Dominator). He had always vowed that people would fear the great DiamondFist, so he still dresses like a Jet Li school boy ninja rip off, and he makes sure that people fear the name of DiamondFist.

The most tragic aspect is that every time he makes someone else pay for having laughed at him for wanting to be a ninja, every time he humiliates someone with the powers of the DiamondFist, he just reinforces his own hatred for his failure and ineptitude. Imprisoned within his own self-loathing, the name of DiamondFist is more of a doom to him than it is to his enemies.

    Hows that?

    Feel The Burn!

    I'm too lazy for that!

I can tell you that initially my least favorite combo at low levels was Fire/Ice but at high levels it was my second favorite.

Man, I just couldn't seem to find a Fire/Ice build at low levels that killed well enough that I wouldnt die. I think the powers I liked werent the ones I should have taken. It was a long struggle, and I admit that I was lucky to team with some friends playing brutes and masterminds during my 20s and 30s to get to the point that I changed my mind. Basically, I was glad I had the firepower of allies. By the time I hit my late 30s or early 40s, I really felt I had enough area and single target damage to go along with my controls.

So by the time I was level 50, Fire/Ice was definitely my second favorite.

My favorite was Fire/Thorns. My #3 favorite after the recent changes was Fire/Energy.

EDIT: tho its still a tough call. I really love my Fire/Thorns character's look and concept. Divorcing my character looks/idea appeal from the powersets, I might pick Fire/Ice over Fire/Thorns if I was only examining the powersets. Hard to be sure.

My least favorite was Fire/Psi, before and after the changes, tho I love my character conceptually.

    Whew! Finally!

I got my Fire/Electric Dom to level 50. I now have every Fire Control Dominator permutation to level 50, and every Fire Control Controller permutation to level 50. It took me just over 5 years.

  19. I have no experience with Mind/Sonic.

However, to your other question, I'd go Earth/Kin since you have /Kin available again. Well, at least, if you are still interested in /Kin.

    Lewis
  20. Earth/Thermal, Earth/Sonic, and Earth/Trick Arrow are all pretty awesome.

Earth/Thermal is the ultimate team controller, in my opinion. Your primary has enough control in it that you dont really need more from your secondary. The Thermal secondary offers heals, damage resistance buffs, enemy debuffs, other team buffs, etc. Its a great all around controller. The build can be tight though.

Earth/Sonic is a fun theme character. Earthquake and vibrations, seismic tremor type stuff, etc. Also, Sonic is a decent teaming set, though it doesnt have the heals or the flexibility of thermal. Still, its an interesting set, with nice resistance buffing, a mez protection bubble, Clarity to give more mez protection, and it has some damage resistance debuffing as well, not to mention a (long recharge, sadly) acc debuff power in Liquefy (I hate Liquefy, but it can be useful). Earth/Sonic is a lot of fun.

Earth/Trick arrow is a control monster. It is maybe the top control set in the game, for sheer overkill. Overkill rules, by the way.

For later controllers down the line, if you play Gravity Control, I'd pair it with a set you havent done that has good control. That'd mean Trick Arrow would be best.

So, planning ahead, I'd say go with Earth/Thermal now, and Gravity/Trick Arrow next. Finally, you could go with Ice/Empathy or Ice/Sonic.

Of course personally, I dont find Ice Control to be especially exciting with /Empathy or /Sonic (though I do have a high level Ice/Emp that I like a lot). So, you could do Earth/Sonic now, Grav/Trick Arrow later, and Ice/Thermal later on (Thermal makes Ice Control more interesting for me).

Hopefully my lunch time ramblings help some.

  21. To the OP,

I love Tornado, but I also feel personally free to skip any powers I personally don't like. Therefore, dont worry about Tornado, if taking it is going to make you unhappy. There are powers I dont like, such as Arctic Air in Ice control, and if I take them, I resent the character, because I "had" to take it or I was "supposed" to take it. I even prefer to play in melee range with my Ice Controllers, and I know the strong mitigation AA has (as long as the level difference isnt too great) but I still skip it or take it last, because skipping it is my personal key to enjoying the powerset.

So, in my opinion, while you may lose some power by skipping Tornado, you CAN still have fun without it. But you already seem to have figured that out. I'm just giving you a little support, that's all.

In regard to your original question about finding more slots for recovery, there arent a lot of improvement you could make without sacrificing recharge. You've maxed out your number of 2.5% recovery bonuses (5 of them). You have 3 at 1%, 2 at 1.5%, and 3 at 2%. The main places I usually get other recovery bonuses are in Hover and Fly (1% in each) but you dont have the slots to take those instead of CJ/SJ/Acro. You can pick up 1.5% from Tornado (just saying this for information purposes) but you are skipping it. Now, you COULD get 2 more 2% bonuses by changing your Flashfire and ThunderClap slotting. The problem is that recharge is also a priority for you, so you'd lose the recharge bonuses from those sets by putting Razzle Dazzle in 2 of the slots.

Now, I will say this. You only have 38% global recharge. That isnt a lot considering how you've gutted the recharge on the powers that need it most (Lightning Storm, Flashfires) to the point that even with your global recharge, you arent hitting 90% or more. Also, by doing this, you've somewhat limited your stun duration on Flashfires. Sometimes 2-3 seconds makes all the difference. Also, in several places, you seem to be slotting for set bonuses you don't really need (Freezing Rain, Fire Cages), and even your global accuracy (16%) isnt enough to overcome some of your accuracy shortcomings.

I submit that you haven't achieved enough global recharge or accuracy to even bother shooting for them, considering the gutting you've done to some of your base numbers. With that in mind, you should re-tool for recovery only, picking up any global accuracy and recharge only incidentally. It'd be different if you were willing to go all purple-expensive-hardcore.

Here is a quick example with (I think) 30.5% recovery from set bonuses. The important part is that the individual powers have more functional percentages. Also, I hate consume, but I left it in.

OK then. If you slot it with set IOs that also have accuracy, do they help? For example, will a Detonation Acc/Dam affect the accuracy of Ice Storm? I have heard that Choking Cloud, which takes no Acc IOs, still benefits in the Acc from an Acc/Hold from the hold sets.

    Is Ice storm like that?

    I16 Beta Today

I cant wait to get home and check my email. I had been in every closed beta except the most recent one, so maybe I fell off the favorable list. Oh well. I'll have to see when I go home. *sniffles* Am I catching cold? Hmm.

On the other hand, if I don't get in, I DO have the goal currently to get my Fire/Elec Dom to 50 before I16 (he is 43 currently). So, if I'm not in Beta, I'll do that.

  24. Cool. I'll see if I cant get the few stragglers on Control to switch over.

Yeah, I knew that not being able to slot ACC is a bug, if only because you can on Freezing Rain. However, are you sure it doesnt have a higher accuracy?

Of course, I'm basing my info off Mids' which isnt at all the same as the game itself, but I usually assume it is more right than wrong. Which is probably a mistake. But Ice Storm and Freezing Rain have 150% accuracy, whatever that means, and Frost Breath has 90% accuracy. So, I have always assumed that Ice Storm didn't need accuracy, so that it didnt matter if you couldnt slot any.

    Whats the deal there?
