Quote:I thought the same myself, but it isn't always easy to make a perfectly precise post. It is natural to want to give some context to the query, rather than only the bare minimum. Trying to avoid leaving yourself open merely *creates* the opening, for those opponents with the right Prestige Class. You could have just said, "I don't want to play a /thermal" and left it at that

Anyway, I do often skip powers I dont like in sets, but Freezing Rain is one of those that really is essential to the set. It isnt like taking Shiver instead of Arctic Air, or skipping Hot Feet. No, skipping Freezing Rain is like skipping Char or Flashfires.
As Enan said, though, you may well be able to color mod the Freezing Rain to make it look like Rain of Fire. That's what I came onto this thread to suggest.
Otherwise, you could try Fire/Trick Arrow. Lots of control, even from the secondary, and there is zero ability to buff others. Not sure if someone else suggested Fire/TA yet or not, I haven't finished reading the thread.

I agree with these, for largely the same reasons. I have a Plant/Fire on live and the killing is good. I had an Earth/Psi in beta, and it was a monster, though it did have the overpowered AoE at the time. I also have an Earth/Fire on live and its very nice also for aoe control and killing.
I would just pick whichever of those seems most interesting to you.

I just went down my spreadsheet of heroes and villains. I have 50 males and 51 females.
Lewis -
By chance, I did this last week. However, I still wanted to say thanks, just because this kind of information is great. I'm sure lots of people will find it useful.
Lewis -
Well, I could always hunker down and make both, I suppose.

Quote:I don't have anything intelligent to contribute to this thread, really. However, this comment did make me wonder how many extra-dimensional characters I have. I also wonder how many characters I have from another time? How many are aliens?I have over 25 characters, and none of them are from another dimension.
(numbers include the ones I'll make for I16, their backgrounds are already known in my head)
Total Number of Villains: 45
Extra-Dimensional Villains: 0
Future/Past Villains: 1
Alien Villains: 2
Notes: One of the Alien villains is also the one from the Future.
Total Number of Heroes: 56
Extra-Dimensional Heroes: 2
Future/Past Heroes: 2
Alien Heroes: 5
I do have a few beings of magic or non-human races from earth (Witches, Elves), as well as some sentient constructs (magical or technological) but I'm too lazy to list them separately.
Of course, it is a bit blurry. Do characters from other planes, that are somewhat attached to the "main" dimension, count as extradimensional? For example: Does a fey creature, from a dimension that exists alongside a magic wood in the Rogue Isles, count as truly extra-dimensional? I decided to not count them that way, since those are almost like sub-planes or "genre planes" or whatever.. I limited extra-dimensional to things that are entire universes (though the Fey plane could be a whole universe, maybe I'm thinking small). I didn't count my one or two pixie/fey creatures as extra-dimensional. I have a couple that might bump up my extra-dimensional numbers if they count.
Anyway, of my 2 extra-dimensional characters, one is simply an old D&D sorceress I wanted to port over. The other is from a parallel Tom Strong / Retro Future / Golden Age kind of superhero universe, and she popped over to this universe after her husband died in an epic battle saving their world.
Mostly, though, all my characters are snuggled in bed nicely with the COH/V lore. However, most of them are simple enough that they could fit in any universe. Some of them may have got their powers in a Portal Corporation accident, or may have been affiliated with some COH universe group like the Circle of Thorns. However, these characters could easily be transplanted. I dont think I have ANY heroes or villains that are inseparably linked to or strongly bonded with any COX lore.
I guess you could say I wallow in the mundane, at least from Sam's perspective.
Let me think about characters I have that I consider non-mundane. Is someone with an unusual existence considered mundane? In other words, is it only normal 9-to-5ers that you'd consider mundane? I saw someone else mention that Batman was mundane, but in a way I dont consider him mundane because the events that happened in the life made even his pre-Batman stages of his life non-mundane. Or do you have to be Fire Queen of the Universe to qualify? What about artificially created beings whose lives aren't otherwise exciting?
Anyway, being conservative/cautious about it, I'd say I could count all my non-mundane characters on one hand.
I'm not sure what that says about me.

All,
I have been wanting to make an Ice Tanker since forever. I actually used to have an Ice/SS but I deleted him because the rage change (that most people love) pissed me off, so I deleted him (I was irritated that I could still attack and waste my endurance). Deleting him was probably stupid.
Anyway, so I am thinking about making an Ice Tanker again, and I could go Ice/SS again (I've become used to Rage, finally, after having it on a couple of Brutes). I could also go Ice/Elec.
Which would be better?
I think Ice/Elec seems more interesting to me, but I am worried that Thunder Strike may suck if it has the knockback.
Thoughts?
Thanks,
Lewis -
I think Illusion/FF is a good choice. Despite /FF being one of the less awesome secondaries for Illusion, Illusion is one of the better primaries for FF. Also, while I think Illusion/Trick Arrow is nice, the Oil Slick will also screw with the pet of the Earth controller.
In fact, I think Illusion is a good choice for this team no matter what secondary you pick. I would personally skip TA, as I said, since you have another controller with a pet, and I'd skip /Kin because Ill+Kin can be awkward. I think any other Illusion combo would be sweet on this team.
Ill/Storm is going to give you debuffs, damage, and stealth, and some resists and a small heal. Plus optional chaos.
Ill/FF is going to stack nice defense and mez protection on the characters who will already be running around with sonic bubbles on them. Nice combo. Plus, its pretty.
Ill/Rad is going to give you buffs, debuffs, heals, controls, you name it. Good stuff for doing anything.
Ill/Sonic is going to let you double up on all the crazy resists and mez protection for the team. Plus you'll stack another layer of debuffs, and having 2 -resist toggles on the scrapper would be nice.
Illusion/Empathy is going to be super nice for having very robust healing and regen, not to mention some decent buffs.
Illusion/Thermal is going to have nice heals, debuffs, and party buffs in the form of resistance to stack with the Earth/Sonic guy's resistance stuff.
But I totally think Illusion is the way to go.
Plant would be good too, if you want to add some damage (aoe immob; confuse to make foes damage each other).
I agree with Local man that Fire Control may NOT be the best idea, since you'll have fire cages + EQ conflicts.
Lewis -
Right. However, Sharkman must appear to be able to fly without a jetpack! Even if he cant.
Hence the Hover!
Lewis -
Thanks for the reply. I was fishing for a bit of advice.
As for Hover, I am mainly taking it for times I need to be vertical. On Brutes, I usually take Hasten, Super Speed, Hover and Fly. Actually, I do that on all my characters villain side when I can. Hero side, I can usually tolerate only having Hover. I just couldnt fit in both Hover and Fly. So, I dont really plan to fight while hovering. Esp because of Grounded. Oh, how I wish I could fit Fly in.
I do think I should probably move the slots in Swift and Lightning Reflexes to Run instead of Flight.
Also, I overlooked the fact that I could put the steadfast -KB in Grounded. Thanks for that!
Lewis -
BTW, this is my SS/Elec build. I find only having 3 real single target attacks to be "meh" but eventually I'll be able to slot up boxing.

Quote:Awesome. I am planning to take both of them. I am also taking School of Sharks, just because I "have" to (want to/get to) for the theme. I guess it may not be great on damage, but I'm hoping it has that cool cheesy wiggling sharks effect that the Corruptor version gets.Bile Spray and Arctic Breath are quite good, but they are cones instead of TAoEs like Ball Lightning.
Does it?That would rule for Sharkman! If it does have the swimming shark graphics, I'll take that before I take the damage powers, damage be da ... uh. "Allow myself to introduce ... myself."
Lewis -
Looks like you already picked. I was going to suggest War Mace / Electric. You could do one of those indo-european hammer / lighting / sky deity types, such as Perkwunos, Perun, Fjorgyn, Thor, etc.
Lewis -
Quote:No lie. I find it hard to believe the devs dont want those sets to not suck. What I'd really like in Ball Lightning is an end/rech (good God do targeted AoE sets suck!)
Oh, I suppose positron's blast is adequate for bonuses. But man, I always want acc/rech, acc/end and rech/end too. Sometimes, if a targ AOE has other properties, you can find end/rech in other sets (such as taunt sets, slow, knockback, etc).
Quote:my AoE chain tends to be Ball Lightning, Power Sink, Foot Stomp, Aid Self while Lightning Field chews on whatever's left, and if anything is still alive either Foot Stomp or Ball Lightning again, or ST attacks as needed.
Lewis -
How will the powerset proliferation affect this? I saw in the article Avatea linked to that Conserve Power is being swapped for energize, which has a self heal in it. Also, the order of Lightning Reflexes and "Energize" were being switched since the new energize heal came too late. However, the article said that the benefit didnt apply to brutes, but didnt specify whether the switch in level availability is what brutes dont get, or whether it was energize in its entirety that brutes dont get.
But if brutes do get Energize, would that change your build? You might be able to drop aid self. Maybe.

Quote:What are some of your favorites? I wonder if there is a thread dedicated to finding the good arcs, or even better, reviewing them. I guess I'll go see if there is an appropriate forum somewhere. So far, I have stumbled through a bunch of AE content randomly.I find it interesting that people are talking about the MA as if it's composed strictly of bad custom groups and farm maps. How many people have played through the Developer Choice arcs? Or the Hall of Fame? Admittedly, you need to read the mission text, the clues, and the souvenirs to get the impact, but I think it's worthwhile. There really is some good stuff in there that rivals or exceeds the official content.
Lewis -
I'm actually glad for the AE for saving me from Grandville. Specifically, for some reason, my Mac client crashes every 30 - 300 seconds in Grandville. Sometimes I can make it to a mission door before a crash, sometimes I cant. Using the reloadgfx command after zoning isnt helping on this one (tho it does stop the Mac random crashes).
Thanks to the AE, I can actually play villains from 40-50 on my new Mac. YAY!
Lewis -
Also, I had one other thought.
I've run the ITF 3 times back to back before, just because we were having fun and wanted to do it some more. Same team, 3 times.
I have also, on a different night, got on an ITF farm team that were running the ITF back to back for money and chances at purple drops.
Were both of these farms? Or was the first one not a farm, since the intent was different? I dont feel intent factors into the definition. Others may. I personally consider both of these scenarios to be farming.
What if both scenarios were run across 3 different days. Is time frame a factor in the definition? That is more compelling, but I am uncertain.
Lewis -
So, if I do the same mission over and over, but I'm doing it for the enjoyment, and drops and tickets are purely secondary, and I'm actually having fun, then its not farming?
Also, heaven forbid some farmers actually find getting rewards to be their largest fun. That was the entire basis of Diablo 2's longevity. "What'd I get this time?"
Quote:Running the SAME paper mission over and over without ever completing, but rather exiting and resetting, it IS farming. Running a series of random paper missions is NOT farming.
Quote:Words Mean Things independent if you agree or are aware of their proper meanings. We don't just get to form an opinion about the meanings of words.
Farming is repetition for results.
In fact, Farming is repetition for results, whether it is back to back or not, just like in the real world. Farmers usually alternate crops, and they alter the plots of land (the maps).
If running a specific mission 10 times is farming, what if I run that mission only 7 out of 10? What about only 2 out of 10? What about 2 in 100? What about 5 in 10? What about 2 in 10, where they happen to be back to back?
Farming is slang, when it comes to gaming. I think using the term for "any repetition of content for rewards" is valid. I also happen to think using the term to mean "any back-to-back repetition of contents for rewards" is a valid use of the term. Since the term was coined as slang for gaming, people have been all over the map on which one they mean. Therefore I view it as a term inappropriate for blanket condemnation.
I suggest a new term for the kind of farming which some find distasteful: Chicken Farming.
It fits on multiple levels, doesnt it? Evil + Cowardice?
Lewis -
Quote:I dont agree. I view farming as doing anything you've done before on the same character, if a reward is generated. Are you running the same AE missions over and over or are you trying different missions? The first one is farming. The second one is not.
I think we have a terminology problem here: farming is run Mission X, reset Mission X, Run Mission X, reset Mission X, etc etc etc.
If you're doing: Run mission X, run mission Y, run mission Z, that's not farming.
Lets say W and X are 2 AE maps. Y and Z are 2 non-AE maps you like that you never complete. Lets say ITF is the Imperious task force.
If you do W, X, Y, Z, and the ITF one day, and the next day you do ITF, W, Z, ITF, then everything you did on the second day is farming. In fact everything you did on the first day was farming too, if you've done it before. That is if it is on the same character.
If you repeat any content you've done before on that character and get a reward, its farming. Whether you do ITF, A, A, A, A, A, A, B, B, B, B, B, B, C, C, C, C, C, C, ITF, ITF or whether you do A, B, C, ITF, A, B, C, C, B, A, ITF, A, B, C, ITF, A, A, ITF, C, B, Y, C, B ... there is farming involved.
Ever repeated a mission you liked in the AE, on the same character? Then 'dirty farmer' = you. How often you repeat and how soon you get sick of it or what percentage the repeats are is essentially irrelevant.
Also, if you do nothing but radio/news door missions, you are a farmer too, because you are doing the same few villains and goals in various permutations over and over. It doesnt take long for repeats to come up.
As for me, some says I repeat the same mission, and some days I never do that mission, but sometimes the other ones I do, I've done before. Some days I do all newspaper missions. Its all farming, really. Even flashing back to a repeatable mission is farming, if you repeat it, even if they are a month apart. The frequency and pattern of the repetition doesnt matter.
That's my view, anyway.
We may have to agree to disagree.
Lewis -
Looks like I lost the progress from my last mission. Which means I lost a level on each guy. But only just. I'm 1 bubble or less out from leveling again on both. Not too bad. *sigh*
I hope it was a fluke, and that the servers stay stable.
Lewis -
Hmm. Back up. Time to see what I lost.
Lewis -
I was two-boxing and had earned 1.5 levels (dinging twice) across the last couple hours. I hope I didnt lose my progress but I suspect I did. I didnt see any in-game red announcements. Dang.
Lewis -
I was doing a mission, just clicking my glowie to end the mission, and I got dumped. When I logged back on, half the servers were grey. Protector, Champion, Justice, Virtue, and Guardian are grey now. I hope I didnt lose my progress and/or hope this isnt some mega crash.
