Thanks for the reply! I'll check into editing Mids. I wonder if the actual Mids' dudes will ever finish the next full release.
I suppose they may at some point.
As for Dark Mastery, I agree it isnt perfectly suited, but I'm only really taking it for Dark Consumption. I dont mind stepping into a "screwed" group in the kill zone to leech some endurance if needed. That's all its for really. The Oppressive Gloom is just an after thought.

Here is a build which I consider affordable. The only expensive items in it are:
Aegis set (only the first 5)
Scirocco's Dervish Acc/Dam/End (just the 1 item)
Karma Knockback Protection
Steadfast 3% Defense global
*maybe* the 2 pet defense aura ones, not sure
Now, some of the items in it may cost money to craft, but I think the prices are all reasonable, and frankly the Karma and Steadfast are easy to get with some level 30-34 Bronze Ticket rolls in the AE. In this build, you max out smashing/lethal. You also have 29% on melee generally, and in the 35 to 39% range for AoE and Ranged. Combined with smoke, which is slotted to max its debuff, you should do pretty well. I mean, for the price.
You may have some endurance issues, but that's why I went with the Ice Mastery epic. I picked up Hibernate to help with survival (with minimal slots used) and with endurance, plus you get one AoE and you get the defense armor.
Look below this build for an even cheaper build.

Here is a cheaper build with mostly generics and a few affordable set items. The numbers on it are still decent, tho your AoE and Ranged are only 26%. Still, with Smoke, Hibernate, and a little effort, you should still do well enough, and you could work up to my above moderate build, since the power and slots are identical, with only what's placed being different. The numbers are better than what I have on my level 50 Fire/FF and I consider him perfectly playable.

What about a Plant controller of some type. I'm not sure how often Seeds of Confusion is up with 3 level 10 recharge IOs in it (or 1 acc, 2 rech) but since it makes the bad guys hurt/damage each other, if it can be up every spawn, it might be nice. Plus you'd have the nice (compared to other AoE immobs) roots damage.
But 10 might be too low. If you were looking at level 12 or 13 so it could be fully slotted, i'd be more confident in it.
I dunno. Just throwing in the idea.
Lewis -
Is it me, or it the posting rate on the new forums really infrequent? How can a guy waste time when people don't seem to post much?
Anyway, hows this for a Traps/Dark build? I think I soft-capped Defense on Melee, Ranged and AoE, tho my mids build only shows 40-43% because I dont know how to change the FFG base defense from 10% to 13.3% like is is supposed to be. Anyway, I picked /Dark for my traps just because it is fast on AoE. Also, /Dark has enough stuff I dont want that I was able to take stuff I needed to soft cap.
I really had a hard time finding places to get bonuses to melee, but oh well.

Yum. Electric Scrappers. I already have an Elec/WP Brute, so I think I'm gonna do Elec/SR.
I wonder if that will rule or not?I think it will, eventually.

Does anyone know in Mids how to alter the defense of the FFG?
I made a new entry for Defender Traps by copying the powers to the new set piece by piece, and setting the level of availability. However, I dont see anything which alters the percent of buff. I looked under the power, and under the pet listed in the power, both under the main database editor. I also popped out to the entities editor. Somehow I've overlooked where the buff value is. My custom mids has it at 10% not 13.3%.
Thanks,

You must have Tar Patch AND Darkest Night. No exceptions. Both are massive boosts to survivability, and Tar Patch is also a massive boost to damage (it gives the foes caught in it -damage resist).

I think Ice and Rad are the best. I lean towards Ice. Traps makes a nice kill zone with its Poison Gas trap and its other fun things, so I think it'd be nice to drop some AoE in the kill zone. Thing is, while Rad has more AoE, one of them can do knockback, which might play havoc with your kill zone. So, I'd lean towards Ice.
Frost Breath (with Aim) could smash the stuff in your kill zone pretty well, plus you could maybe frankenslot in some Slow Movement in them to make harder for bad guys to run out of the kill zone. Also, you'd have 2 single target holds for more controllery goodness, AND nothing seems quite as funny to me as an emergency death zone of caltrops + poison gas trap + trip mines + aim + build up + frost breath + ice storm + BLIZZARD. If you could even cast blizzard before everything dies.Or heck, just caltrops + Poison Gas + Aim + Blizzard would probably be nasty as hell. Carry some blue pills!
Dang. Now I kinda want one.

I'm sure my slotting is crappy, but my level 50 Dark/Ice defender has him slotted with 2 hammi-O Acc/Mez, 2 generic hit debuff IOs, and 2 generic heals. I never seemed to need recharge so I just went for generics. I wonder if his Hammi-O acc/mez helps his other powers? Anyway, he seems to work fine, though largely I just cast him and let him do whatever. I normally busy myself with debuffing, blasting, and holding, so I just let fluffy flit about and do his thing.
Side question: if you were going to respec OUT of one of the 4 of these holds, which would it be? Freeze Ray, Bitter Freeze Ray, Petrifying Gaze, Dominate. I am thinking of scavenging some slots for filling out some of my other powers better. I went overboard on the holds because I could.

I've been having trouble on an East Coast server (Pinnacle) since ... oh gee, lemme see ... since the AION people jacked the COH EC servers with whatever was plaguing their servers. At a guess.

Yeah, /Storm MM teams are sweet!
I also 3-box a Ninja/Storm team, but I like the Nec/Storm team more. I also have a "soldier tech" type team that consists of Robot/Storm, Merc/Storm, and AR/RadEmission. Both are quite fun.
I was tempted to do a Thugs/Storm team, but I have like 7 thugs masterminds already (Dark, Traps, FFx2, Poison, Storm, Pain) and in I16 I'm making Thugs/Thermal.
Anyway, I digress, the Nec/Storm team is a blast!

Just out of curiosity, what kinds of builds steamroll Malta the best? Of these, which also have no problems with Carnies? But mainly, I'm wondering about which powersets dont even notice that Malta have powers? I figure it'd be something with Mez protection. But beyond that, which armor sets let you totally not give a crap?
I dont play a lot of melee types so I'm just curious.
Lewis -
I dont have a screenie of the Lich, but the Grave Knight is here (sans level 32 upgrade). My Nec/Storm trio has the Lich now, but didn't when I took the screenie.

Ah yes, I forgot the Mimee hairstyle. Its cute without interfering with capes and cloaks. I definitely have to stop myself using that one, as well as the spikey hair and a few other short/sassy haircuts for women. But Mimee is a weakness.
I also tend to hate most of the faces, so I use Face 1 and ... is it Face 4 or 5? The one that looks like a strong hearty mountain woman. There are 2 or 3 other ones I occasionally use also but I dislike most of them. Male faces are worse. About the only one I like is Hostile 5. I have to really MAKE myself not use that one.

On the other hand, anonymous ratings prevent backlash. However, either way you go, somebody loses.
Either you can be slammed by others unfairly (or pretend it was unfair) and there is no way to know whats going on; or else you can get pissed about someone's feedback (legit or not) and then since you know who they are, you can get your friends to slam them back for you.
I think this is why it'd be better to have no rep for individuals, and simply leave thread ratings.
Lewis -
I definitely abuse Fingerless Gloves and Shoulder chains. I also abuse the new Magic cloaks as well. They are just so awesome. WAY better than normal capes.
Also, I have a weakness. When I cant think of a costume idea, but I know I want to play a certain power set, I have a tendency to make "tough girls" or "tough guys." Specifically, I go with Combat Boots, Motorcycle pants, Fingerless Gloves, and a "tough" or "cool" jacket. I'll either go with the Gang Motorcycle one (open, with bandeau sport top for women), the Racer jacket, or sometimes the Retro. Sometimes its sleeveless, sometimes not. Sometimes for the women I'll go with the "Vest" shirt because it glistens like the motorcycle pants. Sometimes for guys I'll go shirtless with a chain. I'll also go with either a Chain belt, the heavy leather belt, or else a simple leather belt. Shoulder Chains optional.
But the bottom line is that when I cant think of a costume idea, I just go with the old "the character just got her powers, she doesn't have a costume yet" thing.
I need to make a costume that combines all of my abuses in one, including the magic cloak. Its a good thing I16 is coming up!

Instead of Aim, what about Power Build Up?
That way your stuns and knockbacks can be bigger.
Aside from that, I like this set idea.
Lewis -
I see some problems with the build. The main overall problem is that some of your individual powers are slotted poorly due to the fact that you are trying to use slots more for set bonuses, at the expense of the power's effectiveness.
1) Fossilize deserves 6 slots. I can see maybe only having 5, but 4 is too few.
2) Transfusion requires accuracy to hit. You have slotted no accuracy in this power. Your global accuracy is only 18%. That isn't satisfactory, even with Quicksand's defense debuff.
3) You are taking some of your best powers at weird times. Quicksand at level 12? I'd take it at level 6. Stalagmites at level 16? I'd take it at 12. Earthquake at level 26? That is too late. Take it at 18. Volcanic Gasses at 28? Take it at 26.
4) Playing your character up from the beginning will be a rough experience the way you have it built currently. You are slotting up crappy powers early, while delaying the powers that make your character fun and useful to others. You can max Stone Cages by level 19 if you want to, but you wont really be stopping the enemy, you'll be making it hard for your allies to see, and you'll be drawing the aggro to you, big time. Your slots in Siphon Speed and Combat Jumping aren't going to save you.
I could go on about other things, but I really think you need to stop and look at this from another perspective. The game is playable and FUN even with a generic IO build or a simple SO build. Play your character to at least level 40, taking the critical powers (Fossilize, Quicksand, Stalagmites, Earthquake, Volcanic Gasses) at the EARLIEST possible level. 6 slot them as soon as you can (EQ only needs 3 recharge to be effective, Quicksand can get by on just 1 slot, but 3 total is good).
Make actual gameplay your focus and enjoy your character. Don't worry about a ranged defense or recharge build until you have some experience with playing the character (again, somewhere from level 40-50).
Below I will post a more practical, functional build. It isnt perfect, but it gives you an idea of what to shoot for. When you slot for IO sets, try to meet or exceed the value these generic IOs give. Let recharge and range be something you add in as you can, or after you have enough experience to know what you are giving up, and why.
Enjoy!

They still seem too irritating to actually fight. Oh well. Honestly, its the chain stun grenades that kill me (I have no status protection). While I can certainly clear a Malta mission, I dont actually enjoy it.
Next group, please!

So, I bought an iMac about 3 months ago. What OS/version am I most likely to have?
I know that is a dumb question but I'm not at home, and I'm a new mac user (I'm mainly a PC guy, or have been, and I really only use my iMac to watch DVDs and play COH). What OS would I have been given at that time on a new iMac?
Basically, am I going to have to swing by the apple store to pick up whatever that latest OS release is, or what?

Quote:Yeah really! Heck I've been playing since launch, have a few level 50 Dominators, and not one of them is permaDOM. So even some of us long time players feel like losers. Give us a break.Come on Ditzy; this guys has been on the forums for three months and still has single digit post figures.
Don't you think it's appropriate to give a more detailed response than usual?
Not everyone has mutliple L50 permadoms and been playing since CoV launch ...

Another useful slotting, if you are level 50 and you are in a slot-hungry build, and IF you can sacrifice the recharge from the 1 pet intensive set, and if you can spring for purples, would be this:
Soulbound Dam/Rech
Soulbound Acc/Dam/Rech
Soulbound Acc/Rech
Hammi-O Acc/Dam
You get 90% acc and dam, with 89.9% recharge, which isnt capped out *quite* but you save 2 slots. That'd let you have 2 spare slots for something else, tho it may not be ideal if you are trying to max the PA's recharge. If you dont care about getting perma-PA then hey, you have a strong Phantom Army in just 4 slots.
Actually this would be more useful on Gang War so that you could sneak in 2 of the pet defense or resist sets. But hey, it DOES save 2 slots while remaining pretty effective.
Of course, you can also slot the above and throw on a 5th slot of an Acc/Dam/Rech (from a pet intensive set) to top it off (max it out), and you'd still save a slot.
So, these might be useful if you care more about slot savings than recharge bonuses etc. But again, I prefer the hybrid of the 2 pet intensive sets posted earlier.

Ugh. I'm only just seeing this. I think 1.0 is a fine modifier, but 0.8 is too low. Well, at least through level 40. It looks like, for me, since I like doing newspaper missions against freaks, that the 30s just got slow again.
*shrug*

I am definitely making Earth/Cold for i16, along with a few others.
It should be a nice combo.
