  1. I would go with Fire/Traps. Good AOE, good single target damage, plus your secondary can debuff resistance, plus you can softcap defense for ranged, aoe, smashing/lethal and energy, with high values against other stuff. Also, traps has lots of fun toys.

Here is a sample build in Mids' thingy.

  2. I just wanted to pop in to say I love my traps defenders. I'm 3-boxing a trio of Traps/Sonic, Traps/Dark and Traps/Psychic. Traps are so much fun!

They are already too baddass (read: tedious) as it is. Of course I play controllers mostly so I'm a bit pissed how some of them cheat and just kill me when held anyway. And with their crazy AOE stuns that keep me perma stunned and their robot thingys that hold me, they are already better controllers than I am. If I could throw a mag 3 stun that lasts 30 seconds, and throw one every couple of seconds, I'd be "badass" too.

  4. Yeah thats why my Ice/FF went for softcapping. I run in and take the alpha strikes since I'm softcapped against pretty much everything, and since I've run in, my Arctic Air, slows, and immobilizes keep the bad guys neutered while I remain safe and while the team rips them up. This combo works well because AA is constant and so for an alpha/tank/melee confuse/mitigation type behavior, recharge isnt as important.

But otherwise yeah, recharge is best.

    Lewis
  5. I do kinda dig softcapping on a /FF controller, simply because you can easily softcap ranged, AOE, and smashing/lethal. But yeah, softcapping defense is otherwise kinda "meh".

  6. Just for giggles, I'll post my build. I went with the Fire epic just because I like the look of the powers, and it fit my theme more. Otherwise, I decided to make the build totally team-dependent, and I avoided any personal damage procs. The character is level 36 right now and I exclusively team with him. Its a fun build (tho right now I'm running on generics, mainly).

I totally agree. I normally don't like Gravity enough to roll one for every secondary there is, but Grav/Traps will be a must have. For some reason I can't explain, I feel the same way about Gravity/Poison. Maybe just because it'd be weird. But Grav/Traps? Abso-fraggin-lutely (as Captain John Sheridan would say)!

[[I mostly solo with mine, which isn't easy with the Defender.[/QUOTE]

I really enjoy a Traps/Sonic Defender for solo play. Its got a good single target chain, and its got the damage resistance from the Sonic Blasts to stack with the acid mortar goodness. Its a bit faster than the other traps combos for soloing (on Defenders). You might enjoy it.

I'm just allowing for the possibility. Just because we can't foresee it doesn't mean that there isn't a potential technical problem. Also, I was talking about Poison also, and that doesn't exist hero side at all. There could be issues. We can't be sure.

    Quote:
Balance reasons? It's already been "nerfed." How would /traps be overpowered compared to what controllers already get?
So, I'm allowing for the possibility. They may decide that they don't want a set for controllers that BOTH allows for softcapping against pretty much everything AND massive -resistance AND massive bonus damage power AND soft control AND an alpha-strike-soaker all in one combo, in combination with a control set. You and I agree that it is balanced, but the devs may not. I have disagreed with them about lots of balance issues in the past.

    Quote:
Manpower? Name me another support set that controllers don't have that would be easier to port? DM? No. "Poison?" No.
I'm allowing for the possibility that they may not have the extra manpower to make ANY ports at any particular time, easy or not. They may choose to allocate their manpower to things with a higher priority. We can't know.

    Quote:
Preference? Using traps to help control something. Hmmm. It fits thematically as well.
Personal preference has been a factor for the devs preventing or delaying set transfer before, for both technical reasons and theme reasons. So, I'm just allowing for the possibility. Just because you and I think traps fits perfectly doesn't mean the developers do.

But they may. All I'm saying is that you made it seem, in your original comment on the matter, that Posi had outright said it would be ported. They only said they'll port everything they can, and I agree with you its hard for me to see why they wouldn't. But, human nature and lack of behind the scenes knowledge and past history mean that there could be reasons it won't happen, or that it may take longer than we'd wish.

But of course, they very well could lets traps Cross Over with the Going Rogue release.

    Here's hoping!

  9. I just want more hair styles. Even though they've added tons of them to the game, I want more spiked options. I mean, you've got Spikes and Tall Spikes and the Wild one for women, but the Wild one it too voluminous. Also, men get the spiked mohawk (where you are mostly bald but have a few hair spikes) and women dont. You also have punk. But it seems to me there are a whole host of spiked / pointy options missing.

Here is a pic that explains the style of hair I feel is missing. This pic would be perfect for fae/pixie/wolf-girl type hair.

    http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/8839/hair1c.jpg

That kind of thing. Maybe some more anime spikes and points as well, and more super-heroic wind-swept (up, not across) type things.

    Lewis
  10. Usually when the devs are this quiet for this long, there is a big nerf in the works. Like, maybe they are going to half all the effects of controller secondaries, or maybe just lower damage for all ATs across the board or something. Maybe nerf Accuracy. You know how it is. Basically its usually something nasty. Or it could be Marketing, which is also nasty.

    Lewis
  11. I think Thugs is the best beginner primary, simply because it has very good early damage.

I think the easiest / best secondary to start with would be Pain or Thermal. Probably Pain is more straightforward and less tedious.

    Lewis
  12. I'm only level 34 at the moment, but this is what I'm working towards. It has a few expensive items in it, but its not terrible.

  13. Here is my build. It is soft-capped for Ranged Defense and AoE defense, and I've got provoke in there so I can keep enemy attention on me while I hover and while my pets decimate the enemy. It is additionally wacky in that I have the City Traveler badge (veteran badge) so I can take Super Speed even though I have no Hasten, and I can take Fly before Hover.

However, you could adjust this build to make it legal for you, by adjusting when you take the travel powers. You'd just have to take Hasten instead of Provoke.

  14. From the primary, you'll want Call Thugs, Equip Thugs, Call Enforcer, Gang War, Call Bruiser, Upgrade Equipment.

From the secondary, you'll probably want everything. Also, Storm Summoning can be an endurance heavy secondary, so I recommend Stamina. I also recommend Hasten and Super Speed due to the fact that Hasten helps a lot with Lightning Storm and Freezing Rain and Thunderclap's recharge. Super Speed stacks with Steamy Mist for full normal stealth.

In the epic sets, I don't remember if any of the AoE immobilize powers have -knockback. Electric Fences might, but I forget. You'll want to decide (assuming at least one of the epics has an AoE immobilize with -knockback) whether you prefer an AoE immob with knockback, so that you can keep things from being knocked back with Tornado/Lightning Storm, OR whether you'd rather have an AoE immob that won't prevent knockback, so that you'll get knockdown when combining the AoE immob with Freezing Rain, Lightning Storm, Tornado, etc.

As for slotting, I'll just throw out a generic build in mids, followed by a fairly cheap set build with the same slotting, then followed by my build which has my own quirky build (2 travel powers for fun, less stuff from the epics).

    Hami-O Acc/Dam (50)
    Soulbound Dam/End (50)
    Generic Heal IO (50)
    Generic Defense IO (50)

That sounds like wishful thinking. Posi didn't say that they would port Traps at all. They just said they wanted to proliferate every set they could. That leaves plenty of room for reasons why they "cant" ... from technical reasons, to balance reasons, to preference reasons, to manpower and scheduling reasons.

Don't get me wrong, I HOPE Controllers get both Poison and Traps. I'll be making Fire and Earth versions of both, as well as Gravity/Traps and possibly Illusion/Traps. I would love to eat crow on this. However, at this stage, it seems like a stretch that anything was said for sure.

  17. Oh and another approach on the Gang War is to go with Soulbound a/r, a/d/r, and d/r, with a hami-o a/d for a total of 90% acc, dam, and recharge, which leaves room for both of the 5% pet aura defense uniques also, in case you want your pets to have even better defenses. Its a bit more expensive, but its an interesting option.

  18. I love Thugs/Traps. Its great having good defense and thugs who can survive to dish out some pain. Plus, you get all the toys that confound and kill the enemies. Whats not to like? I'm only level 33 or so on mine, but I love him. Thugs/Traps can eventually soft cap itself and you can do it for a relatively cheap price.

For giggles, this is my build:

    Perhaps.

I play COH to relax and have fun. If it were made harder such that the difference between success and failure (on either regular missions or task forces) came down to whether or not everyone was speed boosted, it'd probably be too stressful for me to enjoy anymore.

That said, whenever *I'm* driving with a Kin, Thermal, FF or Sonic or Cold character, I absolutely keep all the relevant team buffs up at all times. But, that's because I tend to be obsessive about things like that.

  20. I've got 3 tankers, 2 defenders, and 2 controllers that I'd really like to finish up and get to 50 as soon as possible. Most of them are in the 30s. I don't know how many I'll be able to get to 50 before GR comes out, but that's my goal. Basically, I want to finish my current projects before GR hits. This is especially true because I think that some of the characters I'm working on now interest me more for the endgame system (whatever it may be) than my current level 50 characters.

I just want to have everyone "ready" for the endgame system.

As for the new Praetorian content, there is nothing to get ready for. I'm gonna make a Dark/Pistols/Mental Defender and a Demon Summoning Mastermind and play them in that content.

Oh, I also did bring about 10 villains from my villain server (Protector) to my hero server (Pinnacle) in anticipation of making them heroes. In terms of the personality I imagine for them, they should have been heroes all along. I don't have any heroes that I think should actually be villains, so I may not play through any crossing over material in that direction.

  21. Not having looked at the thread ....

I'd give Warriors more to do. I'd like to give the LTs and Bosses the Shield set. I wouldn't mind extending them through level 40 so we get to fight them longer. They are fun.

I'd love to extend the range of Vahzilok units up to at least level 40, and maybe 50. I think their powers and bosses are scary enough to justify going to level 40, and with a new unit or two for danger, I could see them going to 50.

I would also love to see Banished Pantheon go up to level 50, and actually be a regular group for missions and for newspaper/radio missions. They are awesome, and their various death mask guys and the storm/avalanche/thunder guys are seriously irritating. Enough so that I don't think you'd have to ramp them up to justify raising their level to 50.

    Lewis
  22. I usually always at least 5-slot Lightning Storm. I also try to max it for damage.

I don't think the chance for recharge items in there are worth it. Hurricane and Gale aren't the best powers for sticking them into, just because largely you'll be doing other things, so trying to trigger the recharge that way is kinda self limiting. Chance for recharge is best in powers you fire and forget.. Also, your recharge (71.25% without Hasten or either of your chance for recharge items figured in) is good enough as it is, in my opinion.

With that in mind, I'd move the 6th slot from Hurricane over to Lightning Storm and throw a Thunderstrike Acc/Dam in it. Then, while you are at it, I'd put all of the Dark Watcher's set in Hurricane EXCEPT the chance for recharge slow. Its honestly not a big deal to have the chance for recharge slow in it. Also, throw an accuracy into Gale instead of the change for recharge item.

Your Singularity is pretty well slotted, considering that you were going for the recharge bonus.

I would move the Absolute Amazement purple set to Wormhole. Put in the first 5 items, and skip the chance for hit debuff. In the 6th slot, put a Rope a Dope Acc/Rech. That way you'll have really good numbers in Wormhole. Then, in your 5 slots for thunder clap, put the first 5 items from Stupefy in it. Thunderclap recharges so fast and has such a good duration that even with just 5 Stupefy in it, you'll have well over perma-Thunderclap, AND you'll pick up an extra 6.25% global recharge.

That would optionally allow you to drop your cost a wee bit by dropping one of your LOTG recharge items, or you can keep it and just have that much more recharge.

You can still get much better numbers out of your hold powers (Gravity Distortion and Gravity Distortion Field) while still retaining your set for recharge. The chance for +2 mag is nice, but not at the expense of your basic numbers in my opinion. I'd go with the first 4 Basilisk items (skip the a/e/r/h since it is expensive, and skip the chance for recharge slow). Then put in an acc/end/rech/hold from Lockdown and an acc/hold/rech from Essence of Curare. Do this for both powers. You'll keep all your global recharge, but you'll also have 95% recharge and hold duration on your hold powers, with 81% accuracy and 35% end reduction. That's plenty of accuracy with your global accuracy.

I don't think there is much point in using Temp Invulnerability as a defense mule for the steadfast unique. Your defense numbers are too low for it to matter, and with Hurricane debuffing enemies, the defenses you have stacking will be high enough that it won't matter. Basically, you'll either be way low on defense, or way over on defense + def debuff whether you have it or not. But, I guess you may as well.

One other issue here is that even though you have the stealth item in sprint to stack with Steamy Mist, I'd almost consider taking Super Speed in place of Temp Invulnerability, simply because its more convenient, and you can get the combo sooner and for no cost and have a travel power at a much lower level. Still, either way. If you do go with Super Speed, you might try going with Hasten/SS at levels 6 and 14, so that you can get the stealth sooner. The downside to that is that you'd have to take Health at 14, GDF at 24, Hover at 30, and Fly at 49. Or, you could just stick with your steadfast idea, or take Super Speed late. I'm just rambling on ideas here.

I think you'll find Hover to be tediously slow with only 1 flight enhancer. Steamy Mist could use more endurance reduction. Sure, you've got plenty of global recovery, but still, that's a pet peeve for me. I'd almost be tempted, if it were me, to put a resist/end titanium coating instead of the LOTG, since you can pick up 6.25% more global recharge anyway by following my Wormhole/Thunderclap option. Still both of these are minor concerns.

I'll also point out that a strength of gravity at low levels is having an attack chain, and you pretty much skipped over that. I also prefer to skip propel as you did, but I usually take Lift to use in conjunction with GD and Crush. I also usually take an epic single target attack also. But, no biggie. Just keep in mind that you are less oriented towards a single target damage chain than a lot of Gravity controllers are.

OK, those are just some thoughts off the top of my head. Maybe they will help. Use some or ignore them all, as you prefer.

    Fire Kins

I know I'm the bad guy here, but I'll team with a /Kin and not personally care if I get a speed boost or not. I like them, but no biggie. Who cares? So the team will perform better? Big deal. I don't care. You can take your kin with me and speed boost me, or not. Your call.

    Fire/TA?

I personally can't stand Fire/TA. Of course, I played it back when lighting an Oil Slick made the Fire Imps unable to act, often even when you resummoned them. However, I still mostly hate playing my level 50 Fire/TA because the Fire Imps still flee from the area of a lit fire slick (last time I checked) and since they only do melee damage, that neuters them unless there are some foes outside the slick.

But, if you can live with that, it can be a decent combo.

  25. I dont like smart AI in games where you fight lots of enemies (like you do in COH). I just want to come home, relax, and tear into some bad guys. The last thing I want to deal with is enemies that always hit and run, or that always run, or that always space away as far apart as they can so area effects miss, or always avoid ice patches, etc.

    Tedious.
