This is the cheapest build I can work up for Fire/Shield that is soft capped. I kinda wish I had Breath of Fire, but only barely.
I say "cheapest" but it does have 2 Touch of Death sets in it, which is pricey for my blood. I prefer Kinetic Combats, but 4 of them cost at least double what a Touch of Death set costs. The build also has a full Obliteration set in it. Ouch! It also has a Miracle and a Numina unique, but they are optional and all it takes is about (sigh) 20-25 task forces to earn them.
So that's about as cheap as I could get it. Regen and Recharge and Global Accuracy are basically zero. The lack of significant global acc makes me wish I could afford Kinetic Combats instead of Touch of Death, because I could frankenslot about +20% accuracy to those attacks. Anyway.
Does this seem OK for a "cheap" build?
Thanks,
Lewis

Grr. OK, I think I may leave my MA/WP and not re-make him since he is level 40. My DM/WP was originally (when COH was released) DM/SR but at some point (before I realized about softcapping) I said screw it and made her DM/WP. She is level 41 though, so even though she *should* be DM/SR, maybe I'll just let it go and leave her. Tho I'm tempted to make her DM/SR. I dunno.
But for the Fiery Melee guy, maybe I'll go Fire/Shield. If I make another Electric scrapper (I have a level 50 Elec/SR) I'll definitely do Elec/Shield.
Does anyone have a CHEAP Soft-capped Fire/Shield build? I can afford maybe 300 million or less (not counting rare salvage, which I will buy via some AE farming). I dont care about epics at all, but I do prefer to have a good single target attack chain without using Boxing, Air Superiority, or Epics. I also don't care about recharge or regen at all. I can't afford all the LOTGs and Numinas I see all over the place in builds.
Or is it even possible?
Thanks,
Lewis -
*sniff*
My problem is that I have such alt-itis that I can't afford a softcapped Shield build, unless its a Tanker. BTW do Fiery scrappers usually take Breath of Fire or do they skip it? Only having FSC from the primary seems a bit lacking for AOE.
Lewis -
Yeah, maybe I'll jump on the bandwagon for the Elec/Shield scrapper (tho I already have an awesome level 50 Shield/Elec Tanker, so I'm not sure) but stick to /Super Reflexes for Dark Melee and Fire Melee. I have good level 50 softcapped builds I like for them. I dunno.
Lewis -
All,
Is anyone else kinda frustrated by Shield Defense? It is just too good to not take it. I have always wanted a Fire/SR scrapper since Fire Melee came out, but I never got around to it. Now, I keep looking at the Fire/SD option and drooling. Its kinda pissing me off.I made an Elec/SR and loved him, until I made a SD/Elec tank. Now, it makes me wish I'd made an Elec/SD scrapper. Also, I have a DM/WP that was always supposed to be DM/SR and so I'm tempted to re-make her, but I keep looking at DM/SD. AoE on a Dark Melee scrapper? Inconceivable!
Shield Defense is really getting me down. I love SR for concept but SD keeps making me wring my hands.
BAH!
Lewis -
Cobra Strike isn't bad though, at least if you are /SR or /SD and you are looking for places to pick up defense. The full Razzle Dazzle set gives a bit of a defense bonus.
But otherwise, yeah, Cobra Strike is pretty skippable.
Lewis -
Ah! I see. What were the reasons it was disallowed? Just curious.
Lewis -
Bill,
Aw man. That would rule, though, wouldn't it? I'd love to be able to soft cap a blaster to everything.
Lewis -
You have one of what on test? Claws/Stone Armor? I thought you said it wasn't possible?
I updated my application to disallow Claws/Stone Armor also. Are they about to make it possible on test or something?
The application, in case you want inspiration or you want to rope your buddies into a random team, is at:
http://www.lwb.org/compgeek/coh/random_at.php
Lewis -
All,
I have a little random AT/character generator I've made. I use it sometimes when I want a new character but I'm not sure what I want. I've even used it with friends to make a random team, but it didn't last long since the complainer min-maxer in our group got "stuck" with Martial Arts/Invulnerability (scrapper). I think he missed the point.
Anyway, I've got conditional code in it so that the illegal combinations (for example Claws/Shield Defense) are not printed out. I'm wanting a comprehensive list of all the AT combos that are illegal.
The ones I know of are:
SCRAPPER:
Claws/Shield Defense
Dual Blades/Shield Defense
Katana/Shield Defense
Spines/Shield Defense
TANK:
Shield Defense/Dual Blades
BRUTE:
Claws/Shield Defense
Dual Blades/Shield Defense
Are there any others I'm missing?
Thanks,
Lewis -
I'm not sure what advice I have that hasn't already been covered. I just wanted to share my build because I like making builds and they are fun. My Earth/Thermal is only level 37 currently. This is the build I'm following (tho I won't have this slotting until level 50, if I get there). I strictly team with him, so that may not be your cup of tea.

Are they only changing the mastermind exploit? (Which I hadnt even heard of until yesterday)
I hope they leave AE alone otherwise. I have some big outdoor maps filled with CoT and other Canon foes (for full XP) that I do regularly when I just want to mindlessly beat up stuff and earn tickets.
I hope that will be unchanged.

Quote:I think Flash Arrow is underwhelming, at best, unless stacked with Smoke (from Fire Control) in which case its pretty decent if you slot both for hit debuff. But, whatever floats your boat. I personally love Glue Arrow.Nice. Looks like I'll be going with GDF! And possibly switching to flash over glue. Many thanks everyone!

My question is this: when is the new endgame system coming out? Before, With, or After "Going Rogue" comes out?
I'm one of those weird guys who has been playing for almost 6 years with multiple accounts. So, I've got a lot of level 50s, and I've got about 10 guys I want to get to 50 before GR. I won't make it, but I want to. Because until this new endgame system comes out, who knows what it will entail? Maybe it will be so engrossing that I wont be able to complete my ongoing "hit 50" projects, some of which include Dual Pistols and Demon characters.
Basically, I'm thinking I should get early powerset access so that if (or rather when) the new endgame content comes out and screws me (making all my level 50s who don't participate obsolete) I'll be closer to "done" on all my projects so that I can grind on this new "keeping up with the Jones'" endgame crap. I kinda wish they weren't having a new endgame system. If I only had 3 or 4 level 50 characters, I wouldn't mind at all.
Oh well, I'm going with early powerset access UNLESS that's when the new system comes out also, in which case my decision will depend on what exactly the new system does.
Blah.
Independent of that, I found the announcement straightforward, and the choice is fair. $40 ... you want early access or game time? Simple, Easy, and up to you.

Oh and as a followup, and because I just couldn't resist, here is the Grav/TA build I would make. Well, I prefer Lift to Propel but I put Propel in it just since more people prefer Propel. Also, it doesn't have Hover/Fly which I know the OP wanted. But anyway, this is basically what I'd build.

Propel is the better power, but I HATE it. I don't like littering and I dont like the long animation time. I mainly don't like littering.
Anyway, one thing to consider is your epic. I think (but I'm not sure) that the Magic origin apprentice charm may do energy damage, so it may light your Oil Slick. But you know what? Its kinda tedious. As awesome as the Ice Epic is (Hibernate + 2 AOEs) I'd personally be tempted to just take the Fire epic so you don't really have to set up a macro to light your oil slick.
On the other hand, maybe you prefer precision (no AOE fire damage).
Just something to think about. I didn't see anyone else mention it but I may have overlooked it.

Thanks for the replies. I hadn't thought about Touch of Death, but I do have to say I don't like the final numbers it gives. I don't really like the final numbers on the Mako stuff either, though I guess the proc is nice.
I'll rework my build a bit and see if I can re-arrange things differently.
I do wish I could just put combat jumping there instead of Weave for the big drop in toggle cost, but then if I moved all 3 slots from CJ to SS (for the 3rd Zephyr) and to Evasion (for being able to 6-slot Red Fortune) then I'd still be short a bit. I like to shoot for 47.5 if I can get it, in case I get defense debuffed, I like to still float at 45% (factoring in my level 50 values for defense debuff resistance).
Anyway, I'll re-examine my build. Thanks for the advice!

I'm clearly in the minority here, but I enjoyed the original post. I felt the OP was trying to use humor to entice readers into trying a quirky build. I never got the sense that he hated fire tanks or dual blades tanks, only that he personally found the combo to work best in a different way.
Thanks to the OP for taking the time to write down his experiences!
Lewis -
All,
I was hoping I could get some opinions on whether a build was passable. This character is based on an old OLD champions character from way back in the day who used 2 magic blades and a magic mask. Anyway, my goals were to soft cap my defenses AND take all the attacks (even if at least one of the combos is pointless after soft capping). I was wondering if this build looks OK?
Its fairly expensive though (for my budget). I have 5 kinetic combat sets in it. But hey, its good to have goals, and I've got friends who play bubblers, so I'll be able to slack on the melee defense until I can afford/TaskForce for the KCs.
Thanks for any advice!

The original build is passable, if kinda all over the place in terms of when you take slots. I consider Tactics to be a bit extraneous, and I hate Soul Extraction. Also, I'd slot up Darkest Night to 4 slots before slotting up Shadow Fall. A lot of your powers are being taken early and slotted late (like Petrifying Gaze for example). So, that's awkward.
The slotting on your pets isnt that great. Max out the accuracy and damage on the first 2 pets. I don't even know what you were going for with 4 blood mandates.
But you could get by with this build.

Quote:Soft control isn't as spiffy for a Dominator, in my opinion. Its fine on a controller, where the survival-boosting secondaries combine well with soft control, magnifying it, sometimes even miraculously. On a Dominator, though, not so much. I've played a couple of Ice Dominators and they just don't feel as safe as others. It could be me though. Is ice control different on doms or something? It's usually considered one of the better control sets for controllers with all the soft control it has.
BTW, I don't consider Ice Control to be one of the best control primaries. I would rate Earth, Plant, Illusion and Mind as being better generally. I would rate Gravity as worse generally, but largely due to its late blooming nature. Otherwise, Fire and Gravity are better or worse depending on your goals and your secondaries.
On the Dominator side, I have definitely had a harder time being effective with Ice Control than with others. I am not saying its ineffective, its just that somehow it doesn't work as well for my playstyle. Things may be different for you. And certainly, I have more Ice Controller experience than Ice Dominator experience. So, maybe I've just not gotten enough playtime under my belt, but Ice Control on a Dominator has been more of a challenge for me than other Dominators.

I think Whirling Hands is worth picking up. It is AOE damage, it looks cool, but best of all, it is a good global recharge mule if you are going for a lot of global recharge.

My first Mastermind was Thugs/Dark and his pets were named after real friends from my tabletop roleplaying groups:
Jason
Collin
Jimmy
Rockin' Rob
Beautiful Joe
Lou
On of my other Thugs uses these names:
Spike
Slash
Smash
Buckshot
Blackjack
Cupcake
My Robot Mastermind uses all Russian names (the assbot being Maximilian). My Ninja-Storm 3-box team uses all real Chinese names. I constructed them from the Gary Gygax book of names, using all the same family names.

I think ablative armor would work best if it were similar to, but different from, Super Reflexes.
Basically, you'd be a damage resistance set, all bulky and heavy with your ablative armor. At first your damage resistance would be high but as it chipped off, you'd have scaling defenses that got higher as you got lighter (read: as your damage resistance was chipped away).
Might not be worth the effort though. Also set bonuses that increase def would possibly make it feel too much like a def-capped invulnerability tanker.

I like the repetitiveness personally. I enjoy the stuff COX lets us do, so I enjoy doing it over and over. I don't object to re-skins or new maps but I'd object to anything that makes the game tedious, like AI changes or anything that makes the game no longer relaxing and fun. It *is* a game after all.
