Bayani and Thors Asassin might be good people to also ask.

Wow - Congratulations to JohnnyKat! Woohoo!
and congratulations to Frost for an amazingly close 2nd place! Woohoo!
..and, wow! Thanks for all those who voted for my piece! I'm tickled pink!
What a close race it was, too! (I like the 1st, 2nd, 3rd voting system!)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
on the downside, tho - does the PvPer thing mean that we can look forward to more of the nasty, inflamatory, "Smack-talk" type of voters? ick. -
I've been wavering a bit over posting this, but I guess I'm going to go ahead and put in my three cents.
1. I, too, think its kind of crummy to NOT vote for an artist's piece "because they already have immunity." If the piece is good - then its good, regardless of whether or not it "has immunity." Your vote is yours to give as you see fit, I just think thats a crummy excuse to NOT give it.
2. I find it ..odd.. to think of having "Immunity" as a reason to just slide by on that month's entry. Each month I learn something new, each month I try harder. Why waste the opportunity by purposefully "just phoning it in"?
3. I really try not to feed the trolls (but yes - I, too, fall for it sometimes anyway)
..but that just my three cents on it. not meant to harsh anybody's marshmallow. -
I've only been here a little while so far, but I'm liking the current Fan Art Wars!
..have you voted yet, Mr. Assassin? ;-) -
I like the first one best - simpler, clearer, succinct! need not add, nor remove a pixel.
-
(hope this hasn't been suggested to death..)
How about a Costume-Change-Emote that does the overhead wristband klang bit? /CCE ka-TANG!
pretty please? for my "swap places with extra-dimensional counterpart" type characters. -
Didn't Volkswagen refuse to give permission for use of their car as "Bumble Bee" in the "Transformers" film? Citing they didn't want to be endorsing guns and violence or some such? Is that similar?

And of course, Starlin was paying homage to Michelangelo's Pietà

Quote:Rubylith and Amberlith? Wow, I aint heard those terms in ..a long time. I worked with it some, waaay back in the day - not so much doing color seps, but to indicate areas of photos or tech illustrations for halftone screen. Tedious.Back in the day, however, I did make up color separations using letratone and a ruby acetate the name of which escapes me. Whilst I love my old 4-color books, I would offer burnt meat on the altars of Adobe and Corel to never have to fanny about like that again!
Those are gorgeous! -
Over in the April FArt contest Voting thread, Wassy asked for input on the idea of allowing eliminated FArt contestants a way "Win Back A Spot" into the competition.
(I thought the discussion deserved its own thread)
Quote:Bindweed posted:Also, I'd like some input on whether or not we should do a special battle to win a spot back in the running. I really liked this idea before we got going... but because most eliminations were due to non-submission or withdrawing, I don't know if this is really necessary.
Quote:I can't speak for anyone else, but as far as my own situation is concerned, I couldn't come up with an entry using permitted materials, and my entry was disqualified. It's a shame, but I have absolutely no problem with that call. I was the dunce who didn't read the requirements properly, nor give myself time to create a second, permissable piece. I'd feel uncomfortable, personally, if I was allowed back in, not least because the situation may arise further down the line whereupon someone who has a valid reason to remain in the competition thus far may face elimination whilst I pass through to a subsequent round. I don't think that would be fair. I can't speak for anyone else because others may have dropped out for entirely different reasons, but my first feeling is to go with Wassy's implied suggestion that a second chance, if offered, is probably best withheld from people who withdrew or didn't submit.
Quote:Well I've seen no discussion on this yet but since the mad rush of voting has died down I figured I'd add my thoughts...
Since the majority of eliminations were due to dropouts I think the question to ask yourself is whether or not you'd have allowed dropouts to win their way back in to begin with... If not then I guess it's all but a moot point.
If so then I don't see any reason not to continue with the idea if several are interested in trying to win their way back in... Just make it clear that if they again fail to submit a qualifying entry on time that we will all mock them relentlessly and pelt them with rocks and garbage at any given opportunity...
What with the contest being for fun and all, I see mo harm in having someone returned to the island. But then again, if not enough evictees are interested then *shrug*
but then again, the contest is s'posed to be fun and I kinda hate to see ANYBODY eliminated (big softie that I am).. but it is supposed to be a contest..
Ah, what the heck - I say go fer it!
As to how to implement it, I got two thoughts:
1) just allow them to re-enter by submitting a piece for whatever month's battle is current - but they must make it in by deadline, and conform to the month's theme* and rules. Then they get voted on just the same as all the other entries. Nothing special. (* unless you want to add that for THEM, the y need to add "Win my back onto the island" into the Month's theme of the piece?)
2) as above, but make it harder on the entry by multiplying their voting points by -.5 or -1 - meaning they'd get less value for their votes than the "extant" entries.
Thats my two cents. -
In response to AmeriKatt, Caemgen, Tartyrsause, et al..
Please understand that I very much *DO* appreciate her enthusiasm. Honestly, I do. And note that I was trying to be tactful and polite in my post above - I have NO desire to bash!
AmeriKatt, really. I just felt that it might be better if we kept early statistics, early winner projections, campaigning, "drama".. whatever .. out of this "Voting" thread. There's still the better part of a WEEK left to vote, and didn't want to unduly influence ..or worse, scare away anyone who hasn't voted yet, and might wish to (for whoever they might wish to - they're all good entries!). Not tryin ta drop any bombs here. -
Quote:Just in case anyone's interested - I just noticed that "Doc" has opened up commissions again.I actually did come across Doc in my searching; it's a bummer that his commissions are on hold. but looking at the prices he charges on his blog site for black&white headshots...I'm not sure I can justify that.
Matt Wagner was thrown in there primarily for his work on the DC 3 part Trinity, not the Kurt Busiek scripted Trinity series.
Bindweed, I'll definitely poke around your page!
Caemgen; thanks for the info; I've used TA's directory in the past, but for some reason forgot all about it. Thanks! -
Quote:Ahem .. while I appreciate the enthusiasm, Amerikatt, (really I do) .. it might be just a tad improper to be quoting percentages and campaigning for votes here, in this thread - 'cha know?WOW! Out of the current 24 votes, 12 of them have been for U-Naught's art, which guest stars ... ME!
That's a full 50% of the vote!
Thanks very very much to those of you who've voted thus far! Let's see if we can raise that percentage even more, shall we?
(*squees with delight!*) -
Quote:I can echo this. As one instructor put it: "Your finished pieces show me the polished end result - that you can take an idea to final. You're sketchbook shows me how you think."Something of interest to add to the interesting question; when preparing MY final portfolio, my advisor suggested I submit my sketchbook as well (which is full of small assignments, studies, master copies, thumbs for projects, etc. etc.), because sketchbooks are an excellent way for colleges and the like to see your problem-solving process. He got his masters in Illustration from the college I want to attend next, and knows one of the current professors there was hired solely on his sketchbook. Its a growing trend among many art programs now.
It makes sense, because your highly polished finals could have gotten there in a variety of ways. Seeing how you get there would definitely be a good measure of your ability. -
Quote:??? wow - then I did get her pretty much totally wrong, then!Originally posted by Amerikatt in the Calling All Catgirls thread:
(then!)
I was thinking the "Cat in a costume" pic was just a funny, and that she was your typical, stands on two legs, humanoid woman with a few cat-features type of thing.
...NOW I understand the 'monkey" comment. -
Another tough, wonderful moNth of entries - especially because of the sheer, wild variety of material approaches! Great job everyone!
So, here's my votes:
1st Place - JohnnyKat's "Reclusive Family Portrait"
Floored me from the first moment I saw it. Right outta my chair! Slam! Utterly conquers in the battle between Artist and Crayons. Beautiful rendering! Instantly recognizable game characters!
Very well done!
2nd Place - ScooterTwo's "Claytesman"
Boldly venturing out into the realm of real-world 3rd dimensional art! Instantly recognizable as Statesman! Well done!
3rd Place - Toxic_Shia's "Big bottomed Dragonberry"
The first thing that grabbed me on Shia's piece was the design & layout, next was the recognition of the character of Dragonberry. Even though she's a little different from how I'd normally seen her, I still knew who it was. Well done, Shia!
Honorable mentions to EVERYONE else (and even those who's work didn't get in) - each brough smiles and "ooooo!"s. -
Quote:Well, I'm sorry to see you DQ yourself on the Alice thing.I DQ'd myself last month for not including a hot chick. I know, I know - It seems like everyone was willing to let me count Alice as my hot chick but since when doing the picture I was totally thinking of my Alice as the original 7 and a half year old girl from the original book... Not thinking of 7 and a half year olds, I certainly did not intend her to meet the hot chick requirement.
Yeah, stupid to DQ myself when Wassy said it was good... But I am no stranger to doing stupid things. I often pick such stupid little things to be nitpicky about and stick to the letter of the law (or intent or whatever) even if it's detrimental to me. *shrug*
But just because I DQ'd myself doesn't mean I'm not going to play along... I just wanted to wait until the deadline was past to post my entry so that someone wouldn't put me in the voting process despite my stupid little stance
So, below is my non-entry... I guess you could say it's a little bit of a performance piece? I didn't want to just use kindergarten materials, I wanted to make a kindergarten piece entirely... So I was thinking, what would Caemgen had done in art while in kindergarten?? And after deciding that, I got to the performance part because I started asking myself how the other kids would react to him? So, my non-entry entitled "A Mother's Love"
I figured kids are cruel and would be crueler to Caemgen by far... So I envisioned the little brats snatching away that artwork that Caemgen was so proud of and balling it up, even ripping it up on him. Of course Caemgen's mother would love it, wrinkled and ripped or not, and would give it it's rightful place of honor up on the fridge...
(The dad part is just blank because Caemgen never knew his dad... But I igured in typical public school style, the teacher would probably insist the kids include both parents.)
And just because I had to preserve my masterpiece before I got to the performance part of it, here's the original:
but this piece woulda fit right in this month's theme. (and I love the "Performance Piece"-ness of it! Thumbs-Up for that!) -
I'd recommend Evan "Doc" Shaner
Although his "Commissions are currently on hold for the time being, but I hope to open them up again soon."

Tartyrsauce - She's cute!
Lousy_Day - as I said over on DA, I DO like the digital version best, but I'm glad you did the crayon-on-paper version anyway!
ScooterTwo - Kudos on that! I tried sculpting once or twice - its a lot harder than I thought!
What? Nothing from Caemgen? awww, man! -
Quote:Ironic, actually, I actually checked a few places for the best price on the Crayons I bought - under $2 for a 24 box. Then later, as I was moving things around to clear space for a bass - I found not one, but two more boxes of crayons. A 24-box and a 16-box. Brand new, never used!Absolutely - I'll go to the pub tonight and pay about £2.70 per pint, and maybe £6 on a Chinese takeaway I probably won't finish. Then I'll wake up tomorrow feeling rough and about £30 poorer with nothing to show for it except some forms of physiological damage.
And yet I'm too mean and lazy to stump up £1.50 for a box of crayons.
Being an adult is really quite hard to grasp...
To top it off, I barely dented the one box. The Black got the most use (for the "Blackboard") - and even its not down to the paper. The others all still almost have points. Go figger.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Johnnykat - Thanks! Yeah, if Jane tries to stand up in that room, she's gonna hit her head on the ceiling!
Amerikatt - thanks for the kudos, sorry 'bout the monkey-look! EDIT: and Totally guessed on the Leftie thing!
Bindweed! - another very great image! Too bad about the markers - hope you can manage something else before the deadline! I'd hate to see you drop!
ChristopherRobin - Don't suppose you have an extensible tripod? I once put my camera on a tripod, extended all the way out, and held it over my head for an ...er, "Over-the-head" shot.
Arctic_Princess - Been there! Done that! Transported to the nearest hospital almost immediately!
And thank you, PowerStream! -
And Hey, Wassy - don't sweat the delay, as always, "Real Life' takes precedence.
Now, looking at the other entries posted... Wow! Cool Stuff. er,, I mean, HOT stuff!
Juggertha - Nice, simple - yet seems very Nadya-like Attitude!
Toxic Shia - Ya know, that's an interesting take on Dragonberry! And I like the composition of the piece!
Pyro Nympho - Ha! Straight to the point: "Hot Chick!, and Nothing But!" And I see you were wise and worked Large! Cool!
Frost - "Oh! Its so warm today." Ha, I get it - very Clever! Yay for Glitter!
ChristopherRobin - Nice! And its got a heroic message! and its interacting with the Door-sill!
JohnnyKat - !!!! DUDE! That's amazing!(my only hope now is that if you get ANY better, you'll wrap back around to crummy and I'll have a chance! (kidding!
)) I'm assuming you worked fairly large? How big is the original?
...and Amerikatt - sorry, I guess I was expecting to see a collection of screen-shots of the character (instead a small shot of the costume on a cat). I managed with Spidey0318's rendition (I found the thread you made here for it) and used that. Of course, I realized today that *I* don't have a link in my sig to character references for my characters - so I guess I shouldn't be so judgmental, eh? Again, sorry. -
Okay - here's my entry "American Jane stays after class with a student at Atlas Park Kindergarten." (Crayolas on Construction Paper):
And I agree with Juggertha - I wish I'd have worked larger. Oh well. -
Quote:ya know, if'n yer hankerin fer more pictures of yer character an all, it might help if you put a link to character reference pics in yer sig, or sumthin.Has anyone decided to use *me* as their model? I work for fishstix, y'know (tho, in this one case, I'd be happy to accept payment in leftover uncooked macaroni
)
I'm jus sayin -
Quote:Ah, cool! Think I'll try that. Thanks!Yes, Unaught as many as you want... you can even duplicate or copy them as I did here to bring the coven of witches out of Croatoa
and into Bloody Bay (and give them all that "been affected by the meteors" glow) to pay homage to their rightful queen Chloe Macomber.
