Except in this case, it's exactly what's happening. The meaning has changed over time. The new one is nearly universally accepted at this point. Except by a rare few wannabe intellectual elitists that like to argue semantics to try to prove how much "smarter" they are than everyone else.

Quote:Which, again, is a perfectly acceptable definition of the word. The other is archaic to the point that barely anyone even knows of it anymore. In some certain other MMO, I not only had to listen to some mission giver use 'decimate' to mean 'completely wipe out,'

Quote:Hmm, I think I see what the deal here is. There is a sort of combat mode that lasts for a few seconds after activating a power or you hit escape ( This also shuts off combat auras ). The question is, does this trigger if you're being attacked without responding? I know combat auras don't kick in for that... And that might be the stumbling block for the idea of forgoing the timer if not in combat. The timer is so you can't just drop out instantly to avoid a fight or death. With the way combat mode seems to work now, you could just tap escape mid-fight then logout instantly if they allowed instant log out when out of combat. And combat auras. Though they show how it might work - any power on auto, or drawing a weapon normally starts auras set for combat. Might see if the out of combat recovery dayjob etc cut off at similar times.
The idea of "safe zones" for instant logging out certainly has merit and might be much more plausible to pull off without some big recoding. Wentworths/BM, tram stations, inside buildings, and so on. -

Quote:There are perceived mass exoduses ( exodi? Most folks on my friends list. I could PM you a list of the names, as well as additions of people I know left with the AE. I still talk to several of them.
Just because you didn't see it doesn't mean it didn't happen. I'm sure Virtue's population is grand, but people DID leave.) over any major change. I'm constantly seeing people screaming about them. If it was as bad as everyone perceived, the game would be a ghost town by now.
Funny thing: People tend to make friends in any setting with other people who have similar sets of interests. Just because a large chunk of your group happened to agree on something doesn't mean it reflects the overall global opinion on it. I don't doubt that some people left over AE. A few probably even stayed gone. But to say it was a "mass exodus" is just plain hyperbole. -
I haven't seen any "loss of a great many players". Several folks on your friends list, maybe. But that's not an accurate sampling of overall figures.

No, but it's a safe bet that ceasing to exist would put a serious damper on most anyone's plans.
Funny, I had no problem finding solo advancement opportunities without ever touching SFs, trials, etc in that level range redside. And I'm not even talking about running endless tips/newspapers. -

And, yet, Virtue is still thriving and AE is used heavily by a lot of RP SGs there.

...and yet you keep ignoring the fact that there were other references to them, including the Atlas plaque, still in place aside from a brief period right after the Council went in. "little refrence" =! "all references were, in fact, missing".

Quote:It doesn't have to. One of the things you agree to is all materials submitted to their servers belongs to them. That includes forum posts. So, again, you have no say in how it is used once you submit it.I agree to a lot of things when I sign in, but the word "research" appears nowhere in the forum rules and guidelines that I can find. Feel free to point me to it if I missed it.
Quote:I'd keep going, but (a) I don't think you have much actual background in human subjects protections, and as such are just sniping for the sake of sniping, and (b) it's a threadjack. -
Quote:The mobs were gone. Other than a brief period right after the Council appeared, references to them were not. History plaques were changed in error, but switched back fairly quickly. Yes, the plaque under Atlas still talked about the 5th Column by name. There were other references to them here and there. They were not completely erased from memory.

Quote:The post is well over a month dead. In all likelihood, the OP isn't around anymore, given the content. You make a lot of good points. I've been playing for almost two years, not nearly as long as you but I definitely feel your pain especially with my Lvl 50 Brute running nearly all T4 incarnates and she's still squishy at +4 where she didn't used to be. Something in the formula is way off across the board. I certainly don't like constantly re-crafting/buying enhancements cause devs want to do something hinky. The levels across the board seem off espeically with this latest issue.

It may not have been within a week of the change, I don't recall exactly, but I do know it was not by any means an "extended period, much more than a few weeks".

Quote:Hm. Alright. Didn't know about the dayjobs and never tried the slotting. So I was wrong. This is obviously incorrect because there is a dayjob badge that increases out-of-combat recovery and another that increases out-of-combat regeneration.

Quote:>.>Villains get to talk to Infernia in the RWZ for part 7 as well. Spoiler alert
*Thwaps and steals back my name*
Earth: I should point out that your sig is kinda pointless. Your postings on this forum aren't really your property, so you can't set such rules on them. It'd be NCSoft someone would need to go to for such permissions.

Quote:The problem is, there's no mechanic built into CoH to determine "out of combat" vs "in combat". And I'd wager it'd take a LOT of re-writing core code to put one in. Totally not worth it just to save people 30 seconds.I remember my first MMORPG had sleeping bags that you could use the camping skill with to insta-log out in the wilderness. The drawback was that you had to waste a whole skill selection on this one-trick pony.
In City of Heroes, some kind of inherent power that you could activate OUT OF COMBAT would be nice. But if it takes more than a few minutes to code, I think we all know there will never be sufficient demand to justify developer time being spent on a power like that. -
Cliche it may be, but it does fit well. The idea being that villains aren't really too keen on letting someone ELSE have the glory, so they'll try to stop it if another villain is getting too powerful.
-
Of course, the other consideration on this suggestion is the strength of a power earned through gameplay vs one that you just bought. They're trying to steer away from being able to buy your way to too much power. In theory. *Looks at the purchasable IO sets*

Quote:Honestly, they're so fragile because they'd be TOO good otherwise. There doesn't seem to be a good line there. As they were originally veteran rewards, the designers had felt that they were better to err on the side of "cool but weak" than let them be overpowered. Even the old vet rewards like Sands of Mu lose a lot of utility as you level up ( though they can be quite powerful early ). The buff pets aren't totally useless, but, you're right, they're generally not worthwhile.I get that those other sets get pets but the rest of use keep just getting the prestige pets but they are in my opinion not really worth having they either die to easy or do not help at all in any way other then to get some noob to ask you "How you got it and does it do anything?" I do respect your comment about it being a load on the servers and stuff and I Hate lag more then I would like the extra pet but it would still be cool. Thanks for commenting.

We already have those. They're called Controller and Dom pets. And, for more advanced versions, Mastermind pets.
Giving them as perma-temp powers available to everyone would be a balance issue, though. -
Quote:All reference to the 5th Column wasn't expunged. Missions got changed, yes, and a lore plaque ( The one under Atlas ) was changed due to a writer miscommunication, but it was put back quickly. As in, as I recall, a hotfix within days put it back. There were still other references, though.Yeah, this is a public death, nothing like the 5th Column's being disappeared from all existence years back. Of course the fact that all mention of the 5th Column in game was expunged for a while and the 5th Column still returned does make a little dubious the permanence of Statesman's death.
-
Well, I don't think they meant a complete removal from the lore. Just no appearances in missions, as a TF contact, or dialog talking about him as if he's still alive. That sort of thing.
