Please use this thread to discuss the below announcement:
NCsoft NorCal is proud to announce a new feature for the City of Heroes® and City of Villains® games; that of Visual Sounds. Visual Sounds are based on the comic book staple of onomatopoeia, or the use of a word to replace a sound. Classic comic book examples are Pow and Ka-Boom! in colorful bubbles while heroes and villains are slugging it out. City of Heroes takes a huge stride forward by replacing simple sounds with the exciting new visual medium of Visual Sounds.

Again, the NCNorCal team COMPLETELY misses the point of it all.
Where's the "PEW PEW"? Do your frackin' homework with the community before you announce something like this.

I R O N . P H O E N I X - Base Overview
I don't have detailed shots as of yet, but this is the layout to our base. We're the 3rd smallest base you can get (12x12).
The rooms are, clockwise from upper left:
1. Red Room: Tier 3 crafting station.
2. Workshop: Tier 1/2 crafting, base storage annex.
3. War Room: IRON's veteran's lounge and, off to the left, what we call the "courtesan dancing tree". Don't ask.
4. Entrance. Hard to see details on this pic, but it's pretty simple. Due west of that is the Control Corridor, which houses our supercomputer, vet doodads, Ouroboros crystal, etc.
5. Med-Bay. Has all the fixings that'll work (that robothingy's still bugged).
6. Hazard TP bay. North of that is the City Zone TP bay.
7. Engine Room, housing our Tier 2 generator, and lotsa flashy columns to make the room look more impressive than it actually is.
This map was posted to our private boards so all the nooblets knew which pads went where. We swap out beacons when needed for TFs and whatnot, but these are our standards: On the City side, you have a two hop maximum to get to any zone. -

Those all sound like really great changes to the Hollows. Now how about setting War Witch loose on the Shadow Shard? The huge villain population in the Shard is entirely too static, too rooted in place. The Shard has such enormous unrealized potential.
How about:
- a few wandering space "dragons"
- a few wandering rikti spacecraft
- a 50-hero Hamidon-raid-level arch-villain
- hollow out some asteroids for us to explore
- more complicated "one-off" missions
- an accolade power earned by completing the four Shard TFs
- access to the Shard for CoV (co-op mode like the RWZ?)
- actually place the Ski Chalet and Pocket D somewhere in the Shard
- black holes, small meteors, vision-obscuring nebulae
- a wisp city
- random rare rularuu raid on FBZ

I'd settle with "a reason to BE there" personally, but otherwise QFT. -

The looming threat of the Rikti Invasion Force still hangs like a dark pall over Earth. Despite the best efforts of humanity, aggressive Rikti incursions still plague the planet. Advance warning systems indicate the Rikti are massing for attacks on the following dates throughout the year:
March 7th through the 13th
April 25th through May 1st
June 13th through June 19th
August 1st through August 7th
Sept 26th through Oct 2nd
November 14th through November 20th
[/ QUOTE ]
Hmmm. For a minute there, I thought I cracked to the code to the dates they were choosing for the raids as being the perigee (closest approach) between the Earth and the Moon.
According to this site, however, the synchronicity isn't exact.
Seriously, though, how cool would that be if they picked the dates based on lunar perigee? As a lead-in to the Moon Zone(tm) that everyone's been wanting?
Anyway. Yay, Rikti. I'm gonna get sum moar meritz. -
I'm posting this on behalf of forum user "Leandro", who was away for several weeks due to RL, and his account info expired in the interim. He asked me to drop in this submission on his behalf. NOTE: I am NOT the submitter, Leandro is. His copied message follows:
[ QUOTE ]
Hey Turg,
I got back home on Monday and I have a huge backlog of work to do, so I'm going to be horribly busy this week. My COH account expired while I was gone and I haven't had a chance to look for a time card, but today I decided to stay awake "a couple of hours" and put together a video for the City of Commercials contest.
Six hours later, I'm very sleep deprived, gotta wake up for work in two hours, but I got a first attempt at it:
http://www.w00tstudios.net/seyretfil...0pndxg9moc.wmv (decent res)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ULdd7hgBBM (low res but Firefox compatible)
I know it sucks, Mr. Professional Video Editor, but I don't see you making anything for the contest, so shush. Everything was captured live by using /disable2d while actually playing, so I know the camera's shaky and I'm not quite pointing right at things. I'll give it another go when 1) my account is reactivated, 2) I have enough free time to do it right.
Now, here's the thing: since my account is expired, I can't post it in the forums. Can you do me a favor and post it on my behalf? Just copy/paste the contents of this message as explanation. I use the display name Leandro in the forums (as usual, real name everywhere) and while I hope to have my account active again before the 16th, real life is getting on the way a lot and I might not be able to reactivate that soon (besides work, my sister had a baby the 28th and it was born with respiratory troubles, so I'm taking care of my nephews while she stays at the clinic).
The thread for the contest is: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showf...umber=10221919
Read you later,
Leandro

A better, win-win way to approach this is with a "double XP temp power" that is good on your toon for X hours/days of gameplay. That way, the rush for PLing is more spread out, and regular players get to enjoy the benefits of the double XP without being shut out regularly.
[/ QUOTE ]
I don't agree with this being something that isn't counted down in real time. Look at the Holiday Spirit awards. I've got some toons with them left from the December 05 award.
If they do something like this I would think it needs to be done with a real-time count down. You click it and it's good for 48 hours of real time from when you click it. The code is there from the holiday temp powers like the self rez and jet pack. This *would* give people a chance to schedule it in with work schedules or what not. Make it not stackable like when they gave freespecs, only one at a time. You don't use it, you lose it.
*Edited for spelling error.
[/ QUOTE ]
AND NOT give it to everyone at the same time. Do it on a random rollnig basis.
Cause if you give to everyone who has a toon on Freedom at the same time, guess what will happen again?
[/ QUOTE ]
Hm.
Vet reward for 4 years, maybe?
Laser: Your way's a good improvement. I was honestly thinking of 3-6 hours of in-game time, since that's what the "average" player does during one of these weekends, but I omitted it to avoid the "why r u too low???" commentaries that were sure to follow...
Not sure how to do a "rolling rollout", but vet rewards ARE one avenue for that. Maybe for the annual veteran rewards, starting at year two onward? -
[ QUOTE ]
Well lets review,
Double Xp hits and the Devs start to think hey we might not be able to handle the load on the server lets put a cap on it. Then the removed the cap because people rightfully complained, then they snuck it back it on us from time to time.
[/ QUOTE ]
You're correct, until the "snuck it back in", which isn't the case. A hard cap WAS implemented for all servers; what got us riled up massively on Friday evening was that, for Freedom ONLY, they opted to lower that cap even further.
What all of the Freedom naysayers are missing is that critical point. The decision to FURTHER lower the pop cap for Freedom on Friday night was a big mistake, as it locked out a good chunk of the populace. Once that cap was removed, there was still the hard cap to contend with, but at least that put Freedom on the same ground as Virtue and every other game server out there.
With Freedom relying on just the hard cap, yes, we locked semi-regularly for the rest of the weekend, but as most players have noted it wasn't anything a bit of "click a server, back up, click a server, etc". couldn't resolve after five or ten minutes. Sometimes it's worse, and that can't be helped. And other than the global chat system spazzing out regularly, gameplay was kept VERY playable from late Friday night onward, which just showed why the artificial cap was uncalled for.
We were having a hard enough time with it before they put in the artificial cap on Friday night. Removing that, and letting the natural cap take over, was the only viable way to manage a double XP weekend here without alienating the native populace.
I personally hope we never have a double XP weekend like the existing implementation again. All it does it bring the more populous servers to their knees in favor of the PLers (and hey, I'm one of them occasionally). A better, win-win way to approach this is with a "double XP temp power" that is good on your toon for X hours/days of gameplay. That way, the rush for PLing is more spread out, and regular players get to enjoy the benefits of the double XP without being shut out regularly.
A final thought, and I'm hoping this is the last post in this thread.
Most of the useful comments were during the first evening; playerbase makes a complaint, rednames comment and respond, a solution is implemented, and everything that can be done is done.
Continuing to use this thread as a "neener neener" on Freedom, or using this thread to decry other players wanting to come over to Freedom for normal gameplay, should end. One of the reasons I'm against double XP weekends in general is the tremendous amount of inane backlashes, from all sides of the table, in cases like this. In my opinion, most of the posts that continued beyond Friday in this thread have ventured into the absolute antithesis of community, which CoX players have always held as their strength.
It's for that reason, as well as the login strategy management of this "event", that I'll call double XP weekend a failure. Not because we couldn't get our pet projects all the XP we could muster, but because of how venemous and petty the majority of us became to do it. -

To be clear....There are more players on Freedom now than have ever played on that server. Ever.
[/ QUOTE ]
...and that's why I only use Freedom to test out new costuming concepts.
Crowds = lag = no win...
[/ QUOTE ]
I've played on Freedom nearly all weekend (discounting some uncomfortable downtime Friday evening). Other than the chat system going t!ts-up constantly, the zone latency was surprisingly good on Freedom, even in the crowded (read: PL) zones during the lockout periods.
That's another reason why I don't get why they specifically lowered the cap value on Freedom on Friday. If this weekend's cap was the "hard" cap and we hit it, and the lag wasn't bad at all, their kneejerk reaction on Friday just seems that much more like an overkill reaction. -

Then they lowered the tolerance on the fly (which is the part I didn't like)
[/ QUOTE ]
Because the server wasn't handling it. What the smeg did you expect them to do?
[/ QUOTE ]
Funny. After the cap was unlocked, the server playability was pretty fine IMO. And we ended up capping it again; I was able to play through that, and yeah, global chans took a powder, but overall it was playable and "gaming as usual" here on a 2xXP weekend.
The problem was the arbitrary decision to just lower Freedom's cap to "ensure optimal performance", when every OTHER server kept their caps normal. It wasn't that the server was crushed to its knees; we hadn't gone down. They wanted to make the experience "more smooth".
Since the majority of those players were PL teams in RWZ, GV and PI, what does that tell the Freedom natives? The Devs were locking them outta their homes in favor of the PL crowds.
But pretty much all of you non-Freedomites that posted here don't get it. You have this one chance a year (God HELP us if they do another double XP weekend like this!) to kick Freedom in the 'nads while we're down, and the most despicable of you took to it with fervor. "Cry some moar?" Hey: When you're lamenting your dustbowl servers for the REST of the year, we'll remember it with a derisive snicker, cuz nearly every single response from a server foreigner in this thread has been overwhelmingly negative. It's the absolute nadir of what I expect from quality gamers, and flies in the face of the perception of the CoX populace as being one of sportsmanship and top-notch dedication to its players.
You know what? Go ahead. Demonstrate to everyone on Freedom, and the Devs, and the other servers, how petty you can be. For players who have the backbone to be supportive or sympathetic, like Quarktease or some Championites I've heard discuss our situation, my hat's off to you, and it helps to hear encouragement and camaraderie.
The rest of you will just have to enjoy my spite. If this is the attitude outside Freedom, then I'm scrapping my idea of a year-long server tour right now. It'd be money ill spent. -
I have an unbirthday party to attend shortly, but I just wanted to add this.
With the overhwelmingly negative responses from the other servers, why would we want to go there in the first place?
I think the only server thus far to not collectively jump on the "hate freedom" bandwagon is Champion. My hat's off to you guys. -

This is a massive screw-up by NC Soft. Capping servers, and not allowing people access to their characters, is a fast track towards longtime players (like me) canceling subscriptions.
