My most thrilling CoH fight happened just yesterday actually. The enemy itself was far from monumental, just a regular old sniper. (Technically they con the same as a lieutenant, but in practice they're a fair bit easier since they just have the one attack - a high damage but long recharge snipe.) It was the circumstances that did it for me.
I was on my level 43 Energy/Energy blaster street sweeping around Peregrine, when suddenly the sky goes dark... great, banners. It was the middle of the day so there wouldn't be an event team even if I wanted to join one. I start looking for a nice safe spot to log out, when a bullet whizzes past my face. Someone's taking potshots at me! Excellent, I think, one last fight before switching. So I spin around a couple times and spot him: a Crey sniper, standing beside a billboard. You're goin' DOWN, buddy! Just wait till I get th - ohhhh snap. He's level 50.
I sigh and back away. My mouse is hovering over the logout button... but I just can't do it. I've got a full inspiration tray, and no-one else to use them on. I can take this guy. It's worth a shot at least. I mean, pass or fail, standing up to a +7 is a decent story to tell, right? Quick! Do it now before you talk yourself out of it! *toggle on Rambo Mode*
Purples, yellows, reds... couple more reds... build up, aim, queue up Power Burst and zerg rush him till it fires off. Follow up with Power Blast, close in and throw Bone Smasher and Energy Punch in his face. Keep chaining every quick attack you've got, fire whatever's up next, just keep that damage bonus running. He's knocked down! Take the extra couple seconds to give him a nice birthday snipe, he'll really appreciate it. Blam blam! Miss! Blam! Another miss! Oh no the insps are worn off! HAVE A NOVA, JERK!!! Where'd that endurance insp go... okay, never mind, where'd that Return to Battle go. Haha! It was just a flesh wound! Omnomnom, blue candies. More attack chaining... attack chaining... attack thud. Kay, no big deal, where'd I put that Revival. No wait! This time let's be a *tiny* bit more prepared, shall we? After Revival turn Weave and Stealth back on, and use that insp tray again mmkay? They're gonna go bad if you don't, sheesh.
Whoooooom! click-click-click-click-click-click-click-click-click-click DID YOU MISS ME PUNK?!? Wham wham! Power Thrust clear across the street... pounce on him... wham wham wham wham You have defeated Special Agent Sharpshooter. *stops to catch breath*
Wedgie him for good measure. -

Quote:Daaaaang. I can believe it though... I've heard some crazy stories about RNG wackiness. But hey, at least one of your concerns can be set to rest, right? So there's that.I spent about 20 minutes hopping around all of KR and I took forty five screenshots. I just ran through them to be certain I wasn't just overlooking new Skulls with diverse skin tones. Sure enough, every last Skull I screenshotted was white, which is about 100 NPCs give or take.
Damn RNG. -
That's a bug? huh. I've only ever noticed it when the option I'm looking at is set to "none", so I figured that's just how it worked now. You know, to save file size by removing unnecessary data, or something. Well I hope it is a bug then... so it can get royally squished.
-
Quote:EDIT: I forgot to add that every member of the new Skulls gang is white. Every last one of them. The old group had noticeable diversity.
Yep, not the slightest trace of ethnic diversity here. Nosiree.
Out of curiosity, how many spawns did you visit? Cause you might want to re-evaluate your sample size. I spent 20-30 minutes on beta last night running around King's Row, and I couldn't turn two consecutive corners without seeing another spawn containing non-white members. From the screenshots I took I count at least 9 different such models.
Are they predominantly white? Yes, can't argue that. But if you think they're completely white you might need your drivers updated. Or your glasses. -
Quote:This is where I am right now too. I've been looking after my elderly father since last fall so I'm at home pretty much all the time. I have the same entertainment budget I always had, but now I don't go anywhere else to spend it, heh. so mostly it goes to board games and paragon points these days.we don't get to go out very much so pretty much all of our entertainment dollars go to CoH.
I just added it up: since Freedom launched I've put $700 into the market. Yikes! That number was a shock to see! When I did the math though, that's only about $15 a week. It's not half what I used to spend at restaurants and going out on the weekends... I'm actually saving money. So overall, considering how helpful this is to me as a pastime right now, I'm more than happy to give them extra cash to get extra stuff in return.
To see that this way is possible, and folks who don't want to pay any extra is also possible, and we're both benefitting more than under the old model... yeah I'd call that a success, I think. -
Quote:So basically you'd have two Ouro versions of each Praetorian arc... a Loyalist and a Resistance version. One where you followed the "true" storyline and one where you followed the "infiltrate" storyline, pretty much. Either one gives the same set of badges and whatnot for that mission, but the one you pick chooses the storyline points that get set on your character for later. I like that. Sure it's twice the work of adding in one arc, but it's a fraction of the complication and time needed to reprogram Ouroboros.Set things up so that you can run the Flashbacks as *either* a Loyalist or a Resistance member (using a UI choice when accepting the Flashback).
For the parts where you need to talk to someone that's been phased out or killed off, you could set up a catch-all contact. It uses the AE hologram contact tech to take on the appearance of any character it needs to be, and we already know that can be different for each person looking at it. It's default appearance can be set to a standard praetorian civilian for those not running any of the arcs. So to anyone who's not time traveling, it's just another praetorian schmoe standing around reading a newspaper. -
Aww heck yeah! I vote for the little green man or a Grey. Or a teeny tiny person in a spacesuit, that'd work too. Bonus points if you can see them pushing buttons and pulling levers

Quote:The poster you quoted? He's actually the guy who wrote it!This very idea made me laugh really, really hard.
Devs: Great writing on this story. I look forward to each chapter!
And yeah, it is a really fun story. Me likey! -
Quote:This is very time-limiting in itself. What if you just simply can't log in during that one event? For example I was subscribed to the game during the fifth anniversary, but RL had me too busy too log in for that entire month. I didn't get the badge on even one character. So it can happen, and then you're right back in exactly the same boat. Whereas Null is a year-round, opt-in solution, and people who don't find the situation to be a problem can promptly forget he even exists.During the Winter Event: log in anytime during the event and as a holiday gift your character receives...
I like the idea of going to Null for out-of-the-way things in general, really. It's like the devs' way of saying, "Okay, we know you want this but to do it properly would take a heckuva lot of work. So here's a compromise for the people that consider it important. It's a little more work for you guys, but it's a LOT LESS for us. Maybe one day we'll clean it up, but no promises." And I for one can live with that attitude.
If we can get even more QOL features or pleasant little bonuses added this way, potentially years before they otherwise would, then I'm all for it. Now if only we could get his phone number... -

This one's better if you prefer a fast rate of progress.
Quote:Slowly get 10-15 toons to level 50 and then work on maxing them out.
Quote:When is the point on your level 50 where you sit back and go.."I've done all I can possibly do to make this guy the best that I can." ?
Oh and welcome back! -
Quote:Yeah no doubt. While it can be useful, it's not what it could be. Hopefully a nice simple layouto like you suggested could be implemented at some point. I wouldn't ask right now, hehe... but in the future perhaps. The current "build list" divided out by power is... tedious for shopping purposes. A simpler list would lay out the enhancements alphabetically, with a check box next to each. If I need 3 health enchancies, there would be 3 listings for health with a check box next to each of them. A descriptive line of salvage needed would be bonus, or maybe even an alternate list for salvage shopping... dunno... just tossing ideas 'round.
-
Quote:There actually is a "shopping list" feature... look under Window -> Recipe Viewer. It brings up a list of all your powers and the enhancements you slotted in them. It even shows a list of the salvage needed, the buying cost (crafting table cost for common IO recipes, and I would assume the vendor cost for DOs/SOs), and the crafting costs. You can see this for the whole build at once, or you can check just the powers you want to see that info for. You can then copy what you selected to an ingame helper window, or to the clipboard for pasting into a text file. You are looking for some kind of "check off" function. Does it need to be a visual highlight? or could it possibly be a separate popup/window with a "shopping list" of all needed enhancements for a build, with little boxes that you could literally check off?
Unfortunately it doesn't allow you to check or uncheck just one slot at a time, it only works per power. It also doesn't retain check status if the file is closed... so you'd have to keep the file open the whole time if you want to track progress solely by that method.
However! This could* make it a much simpler request than previously believed, since it may* be just a matter of adding per-slot functionality and state retention to this feature, as opposed to creating a whole new feature.
* I am not a programmer, and know not of which I speak.
I for one would be more than happy to see a feature like you're suggesting... ripped out notebook pages and free-roaming post-its do not make for an "organized" system.
Quote:There are systems out there that can run the game, but not the game and Mids?
o.0
Speaking of alternate slotting, what's the keyboard shortcut you can use to flip to alternate for just one power? I used to have a whole list of Mids shortcuts on my other computer, but that machine's long gone and now I can't find that list anymore. It'd be downright awesome if anyone could point me to it. -
Quote:Yeah I don't know what the stumbling block is either. All I know for certain is, the day they let me roll someone with a gun and a sword, is the day I roll someone with a gun and a sword. As far as sword and gun abilities on one character, the Syndicate have that. When they were added in I18 I figured they would help pave the way for that. There is a possibility that there's some AI concerns due to having two weapons (since that's why it's blocked in AE) but I figure the devs could design them a little bit differently.

Quote:Having played a grand total of one controller, I can't speak to the specific question you asked. But this part I can comment on.A defender who chooses Empathy as a primary seems to be expected to predominantly use the primary and pitch in a bit here and there with the secondary. Fair enough, that's always been what I've thought.
I rolled an Empathy/Energy defender shortly after I started playing. A couple years later she was still only level 30, probably a third of that due to the nemesis invasions a couple months back. So all this time I've been laboring under the idea that what you said was right... empathy defenders are expected to primarily heal/buff, and only contribute in other ways if it doesn't take away from that role. Because it had always seemed they were less effective at handling the combat side of things on their own.
However. About a week ago I decided to reroll her as Empathy/Water. She hit 19 by the end of the first day, and 22 in the very short time I've played her since. About four levels' worth came from the Rikti invasions, sure, but the rest came from solo street sweeping. I found that with just a few inspirations I could reliably take on spawns with +3 and +4 bosses in them. Even took on +5s a couple times. Soloing with an Empathy defender. If I were to follow common logic and sideline her combat capabilities to focus on healbuffing, I'd be drastically short-changing my team.
What this taught me was, you should never believe that what people expect to be true is always going to be true. So if someone tries to tell you there's only one proper way to build or play a character, just plain don't listen. Cause in this game that's simply not the case.
I think what you're seeing is people who have a very clear idea of how they like to play. (Or people who have NO idea and are just going by what others say.) And it works so well for them and their playstyle that they develop this false sense of duty, thinking they must pass on their wisdom to anyone they see doing it differently. Whether or not that advice is asked for, welcomed, or even valid. These are the kind of people that I like to say "have a nice day" to and then walk away from.
Also, blasters ARE crazy for going into melee. That's what makes it fun! -
Quote:In Spark Blade's case the problem is having one character using both a gun and a pistol. I recall Posi saying once that they tried it a number of different ways, and it never worked as well as you'd think it would. While it's probably more complex than it seems, I hear the "difficult to make" comment often made with Rose Star and Spark Blade but I'm not fully seeing it. I can see some overall time vs resources problems but not outright difficulty, especially with how nice some of the newer stuff looks. You could probably get away with a little cheating with Spark Blade's visuals since it's long trenchcoat + stylized belt.
I don't know why it's a problem, mind you. The Wiki lists him as a Katana/SR scrapper with signature pistol powers... that might be it. If he were instead a blaster with an electric pistol primary and a secondary using a mix of katana attacks and SR-themed abilities... well now we're talking. Develop him that way, and you've also got the basis for two new powersets, Energy Pistol and Sharp Reflexes. -
HEEEYYY who unplugged Pac-Man?!?!? Not cool guys, it took forever to get that high score!

Quote:The overview says "these new set bonuses provide more powerful resistance against a broader variety of damage." The way I read that was, things like "3.3% resistance to immobilize" and "2.2% resistance to stun" would be replaced by something more like "4% resistance to all mez types" or "7% resistance to confuse, fear and sleep", for example. You know, to make them useful.I find it a little interesting that it states "specific" mezz resists will be removed from some IOs. What I hope is that while some like the immob resist in melee sets gets removed, others like some of the stun/hold resists get buffed. The main problem was the sheer fact that the values were so incredibly low, sometimes hovering around 1%.
