  1. When I upgraded mine in January 2009, the free month started after the trial time had ended. Also, the subscription plan I added didn't kick in until both the trial period and free month were finished.

Every in-game benefit I've seen so far (such as lifting the trial restrictions, or getting booster pack powers) has taken effect within a few minutes at most. Make sure you're logged out of the game while you apply the new serial code to your account. It wouldn't hurt to give it five or ten minutes before you log in again either, especially if the store just released something new.

Welcome to the game! Hope you decide to stick around

One little (but important) thing: /macro <name> <commands>

Macros need a name, the word that actually shows up in the tray. And you can only see 3-4 letters in the small icon space so shorter is better.

    Ex: /macro Dwf powexec_toggleon White Dwarf$$gototray 4
  5. Okay, this made me laugh.

I saw this thread last week and thought, now here's an opportunity! A couple days ago I had put together enough inf to make it worthwhile, and I come here to find your post saying that you're taking a break. A little sucky, but okay.

Then tonight I decide to do it anyway and drop 300mil on prestige. When I'm done the game freezes as I'm leaving the base, so I hit the forums to check on it... and find your post saying "OK who did I miss?"

    /e sigh

Sometimes I feel like Charlie Brown.
  6. Not me, I could access the Graphics and Audio tab just fine. I'm using a laptop with Vista.

But I did have shadows turned completely off, and this patch turned them back on at Low. No other graphic settings seem to have been changed that I can tell.

But in the past 30 days I've crashed twice while Gifting an enhancement to someone, once by trying to open the market window, once when someone nearby set off an aoe power, and once when I was just standing there. I must have been standing really menacingly...

The server status page has shown Virtue being down every time I look for at least a month now. Seriously, I've been on Virtue while it's said that.

Ahh right, my bad. I haven't used AE since the farms started cluttering up the selection screen. I guess it shows

Oh perfect, you're gold then. I just thought I'd mention it for people reading the thread who don't have a cross-faction bankroll. For those who don't, take Aggelakis' advice and fill your suitcase before you switch. That should help you out.

The only thing I'd suggest then kendo, is get your stuff before GR hits. I have a feeling the markets are going to go crazy for a while once it does, with boatloads of new characters looking to get kitted out, plus all the current and returning marketeers having two markets to drool over.

That and maybe, outfit the character who does the switching while he's still over there, and bring back all the stuff for a second character. It costs the same but takes less time and effort.

Absolutely, yes it is a big haul. And if you pick the right items it may even be profitable beyond financing your current needs, allowing you to bring a few things back to sell or pass along to alts and friends.

And no, I'm sure it won't be quick or easy. For starters, in order to access the other faction's market you have to go two steps in the other direction, not just one. For example Rogues can get into Paragon City, but they can't use Wentworths until they turn all the way into Heroes. Then they turn Vigilante and can get back into the Isles, but they won't be able to use the Black Market again until they turn all the way into Villains. At least that's what the last confirmed info from the devs said.

Nobody said a smuggler's life would be easy

The person getting it has the option of returning it to sender. Well they can when there's an attachment, anyways.

(Which, btw, sounds like a great way to stick it to RMT-ers if you haven't disabled their emails. Return every single slice of spam to their inbox and let them delete it. )

But items not claimed by others yet don't count against your own limit. Just yesterday I sent 20 enhancements to a second account, and then 20 more to my own. I sent them all in a row before claiming even one of them with either account. it worked fine.

Edit: Maybe the dev post about unclaimed attachments was only referring to items sent by a globalname to itself, and not yet claimed by one of its own characters.

As long as you've got a hero on blueside with that kind of money. The devs have said (I'm told it was at Pax) that influence and infamy will not be brought across from one side to the other. When you switch you keep any items you've got, but have zero of the new side's inf. However your old side's inf does get put into a kind of holding, so if you switch back it's still there waiting for you. You just can't spend it while you're playing for the other team.

I'm not sure. But what it does do is effectively put your level progression on "pause". That way you can keep getting rewards but the enemies stay at the same level, plus you're not building up even more powers and slots to worry about filling. And since AE tickets can be turned in for whatever you're after, you're not stuck with piles of cheap random drops.

I'm thinking they went with damage/recharge because it's an attempt to bring in new players. By going with Razer, they're clearly trying to catch the eye of people who are already gamers. And the majority of MMO-style gamers like dealing high damage. (Those big orange numbers are awfully pretty... ) So they picked promo items that let you deal more damage; makes sense. The recharge was chosen, I'll bet, because the enhancements also have a proc - a chance for bonus damage. Sure it's a small chance, but the more often you use the power the more often you get that chance. Nothing says 'I wanna stay' like kicking butt on the bad guys.

I think this is an excellent idea! People love spending money to show off. I'd suggest a minor tweak in the pricing though. Even multi-billionaires will have to pause at the thought of dropping a full bil in one place. I would foresee a lot of people trying it, but for that kind of pricetag a lot would only do it once, or on rare occasion. But if you lowered it to 100 million for 24 hours of real-time title, that's easier to swallow. Once you've got inf to burn, 100 mil is a drop in the bucket. Not only will it make the decision a no-brainer for the hesitant first timer, it will also make it easier to do again and again. Spending a little money a lot of times adds up to the same amount spent, but due to each purchase being barely noticeable it's more likely to turn into a habit.

Neat trick you pulled with the transfer-name change! I'll have to remember that if they ever bring them back.

Oh and, weird coincidence, Triplash is a DM/Regen Scrapper. Ironically, it took me about 30-odd levels before I did like her name, and another ten to find a look I wanted to stick with. I even renamed my global to something else so I wouldn't be saddled with the name forever, and now I wish I could change it back, hehe. These days I like her so much I'm already planning her Praetorian alternate, a DM/Regen Stalker called Traincrash. The part that disturbs me though, is I'm considering getting a second account just so the two of them can one day meet in-game.

Every day's a struggle for an altoholic...
  21. I used to be a lot more reluctant to delete as well, but then about a month ago I found myself considering buying new slots... again... and I thought to myself, "this would be my last set for this server. What do I do after that?" So I didn't buy them. Instead I took a long, hard look at the kiddies I already had. And some of them didn't look so good anymore.

I did feel a connection to many of them for one reason or another. Too cool a name to throw away, I loved the bio I'd written, good memories of fun times with people I'd met ingame. But it hit me. If I delete the character I can use the same name for the new kid. I can write down or copy-paste the bio. And the memories are attached to me, not the character. None of those were good reasons for cluttering up my slots with characters I don't enjoy playing.

Add to that the fact that I always save any costume I really like, and after over a year of playing I have more than enough inf to buy them new rocket boots or halloween salvage. Plus a freespec and a vet respec lets me put up to 20 good enhancements back into my SG bin for reusing on the new kids. And since I-17 any inf they have on them gets mailed back to themselves and claimed before they even talk to Miss Liberty. (If they're under 10 and can't send mail yet, then asking a friend nicely does the trick as well.)

And I've come to the same conclusions as you about Tanks, Khelds, and most support classes - not my cup of tea. i did keep one of each so I can enjoy a different playstyle when the mood hits me, but mostly I just bit my lip and put them on the bus. "It's time for you to see the world, don't worry you'll love it." However I haven't outright erased a character yet. So far I've just been rerolling them - giving them a different AT or new powersets, but the same name, look and bio. In the last month nearly a third of my characters have been reborn as scrappers and blasters. Probably another third will become brutes and other villain ATs, once I can start them in Praetoria and run them as heroes. Because I've done all the AT experimenting i need to and I've found my preferred playstyle: jump in and hit stuff.

As for badges and whatnot, well I've only gone out of my way to badge hunt on my first and most cherished, Triplash. And believe me, once is enough. Losing stuff like built up charges for day job powers kinda pinches, but I look at it this way - they're pointless anyway if I'm never going to play the character.

I think about the only thing i wouldn't do is transfer them to another server. I've put too much time and prestige into my little one-person sg base, and if I had to do all that again from scratch I probably wouldn't bother. mind you, if I had my time back I'd have started out on a different server... I love Virtue, but during peak hours the server load can get too heavy for my moderate system to run the game properly. But that's another topic

So that's my opinion. Not so much what lines I won't cross, as what lines I'll cross now that I wouldn't before.

I'm sure by then Marketing had turned on their [Info Containment Field]. It's their signature power: a zone-wide AoE that causes an Unresistable %1000 Reduction to Developer Comments, and persists until de-toggled. (And apparently, its secondary is a %60 chance for a Mag 5 Confuse against player-class targets.)

It's not secret that City of Heroes's numbers have been falling lately. (No, that's not DOOOOM!-crying, it's likely a result of last quarter not having a major issue release and people waiting for Going Rogue to invest in the game again.) Instead of having one massive influx of cash in July, they released one preorder in May to get some money for May's books, they're releasing another preorder for June to get some money for June's books, and then the official launch will bring in money for July's books.
There's also the upcoming Mutant Booster. Feature packs may not be as obvious to financial results as expansions, but they make a significant impact. They're likely waiting for just such a lull before they "Release the Mutants!"

Plus, let's not forget here... these MOs (Marketing Origin) are damage/recharge, not damage/endurance reduction. You're using your powers more often but not recovering your endurance any quicker. Go into crazypunchstuff mode and you're gonna tire out more easily. That alone balances it for most low-level characters. It is a pleasant bonus, but it's not so phenomenal that a person will hurt for not having it.

From the registration dates I can see, most of the folks doing the complaining here have been leveling up characters for years. I'm sure you'll do just as well with or without these bonuses as you did last week, before you knew they existed. I'm sorry, before you knew they would one day exist.

Take a breath. Relax. *Hands everyone a cookie and some hot cocoa*

Definitely! Just beware, you can't send email until you're level 10 or higher. If you're under 10 and have something you feel is worth keeping, find a friend you trust and ask if they could email it to you or hold it for a minute while you login to another character. (I doubt this is news to the OP, looking at their reg date, but I thought I'd mention it for the newer people reading it. )
  24. I think this is the thread Wicked_Wendy is talking about. (In case you're tempted, please don't respond there. It's long dead; let it rest in peace.)

I had an idea back then that the PPD could start a Public Appreciation Program, where a single holo-emitter (think of the costume-switching MA contact) would be setup outside City Hall and each Police Station. It would cycle through each candidate randomly, and players could click it to look up (on their own client only) any character in the system. It's the last post in the thread, so I don't know if nobody liked it, or if everyone was just tired of reading that thread by then
  25. Wonderful list! To expand on a couple things:

    Base Usage Wishlist

Training Rooms: Besides the standard targetable training dumies, the main purpose of these rooms is Safe Combat Simulation. They can be equipped with holographic emitters or illusion spells that can simulate enemy critters of any type, which only exist in that Training Room. This is a useful tool for testing certain powers or damage types against particular enemies. These critters can be set to the various pet stances: passive, defensive or aggressive, depending on the nature of your training goals.
    - To unlock a critter for training, a member in SG mode must defeat that critter a certain number of times; let's say 100 for Minions, Lieutenants and Bosses; and 30 for specific Elite Bosses, Archvillains, Monsters, and Giant Monsters. A device called a Threat Simulator can then summon one or more critters of that specific type, a full spawn from a particular faction, or a random assortment of unlocked critters at a specified threat level. Defeating these critters offers no rewards, and being defeated by them incurs no debt. If a character is defeated by them, the enemies despawn and the character resurrects. The first tier device allows only one character at a time, and is restricted to Minions and Lieutenants. The second tier device allows up to a full eight person team, and also allows the use of Bosses and Elite Bosses. Finally the third tier device allows the use of multiple teams, and provides the option of summoning Archvillains, Monsters and Giant Monsters.

    - Another device called a Power Simulator allows a character to use a Training Build. It is a third character build that can only be used while in the Training Room, and can be respecced at will from the Power Simulator. In conjunction with the Threat Simulator, it can be used to test certain powers or to fine-tune a particular build. Once you get it right, you can then respec your character or switch your build, as normal.
SG Missions: The Mission Computer assigns SG Missions, similar to the radio and newspaper. These missions are selected randomly from a list, and may optionally be based on a theme (such as type of mission or favored enemy) chosen by the group's Leaders. For example, one SG chooses all rescue missions because they dedicate themselves to protecting the innocent. Another SG's missions all involve Technology based enemy factions, because they stand for preventing the abuse of advanced technology. SG Missions grant no inf or drops; instead their rewards are 100% Prestige.

Crisis Monitor: Supergroups with this Control Aux device in their base gain access to a Contact similar to the Police Scanner. This device pops open a window that provides up-to-date status on zone events and giant monster activity. Every active zone event and currently spawned GM is tracked here in real-time, so that a character who missed an event channel message (for example they logged in after the message was broadcast, or were busy fighting) can be aware of its presence while it is still ongoing. (Except Sally, because nobody thinks she's real.) The Villain version is called the Anarchy Monitor, and each version lists only the events and GMs active within its associated faction. This device is unlocked for crafting once members in SG mode have obtained all of the GM and Zone Event related badges.

    Base Building Wishlist

    - Per-item settings for Locked and Translucent states. These effects apply only in base edit mode, not in regular base viewing.
    - A Locked item can not be selected, preventing it from being accidentally altered or moved. Once an item has been set to Locked, you have to Unlock it individually from a basewide list.
    - A Translucent item gains 90% transparency, allowing you to see through it to whatever is behind it.
    - Using Locked and Translucent together on already placed items allows a character to more easily add new items, without having to undo or redo previous efforts.
    - The ability to save room styles to locally stored files, and load them on a per room basis. Includes an option to set a default style, so that newly created rooms will automatically match a consistent base theme.
