Quote:By the way, that is an awesome story.I have to admit the latter was kind of odd (the date, not the girl) because she wanted to meet for the first date at a coffee shop... well, that was not weird in and of itself, but when I got there she asked me where my laptop was. I told her I didn't have one, and she asked me (exasperatedly) how was I going to play CoH with her if I didn't bring my laptop?

Aside from Belle, I've met some of the people who used to play Taxibots in person, I've met Catwhoorg in person (he lives pretty close), and I met Blue Sigma, who I think passed away. If he's who I think he is, he arranged a meet-and-greet here in Atlanta that I went to, and where in fact I met Catwhoorg. It sounds kind of sad, but really, I'm glad I got to meet him.
I wanted to go to Dragon*Con this year and meet some more folks, but I've been having some health issues (nothing that won't eventually get better, I hope!) that precluded me going this year. -
Not to get political, but soldiers and policemen kill people in the line of duty, and they are generally thought of as heroes. Having said that, though, they can also be real villains if they kill innocent or unarmed people, such as if they torch a village of civilians.
Whether a person is a hero or a villain often boils down to their particular situation. If a superpowered person who has a clear advantage over a villain chooses to kill him, to me, that makes the person a villain. If your level 50 blows up a Hellion instead of simply disarming him and hauling him off to the Zig, even though the superpowered person is well capable of doing the latter with little to no risk, then if he or she chooses to kill instead, that makes them pretty scummy.
On the other hand, if a superpowered person has no other recourse but to put a bullet in the brainpan of a Malta Operative to keep him from killing a kidnapping victim that is in immediate danger, I think it's altogether appropriate and heroic for them to do so. -
I'm just amused that on the list of threads, this one's title is abbreviated to, "Looking to trade of Meat"

I did, and I apologize for not replying earlier. As Guy said, we've been deliberating
On the one hand, frankly, we're still ironing out the bugs in Titan Sentinel, so it's a bit early to add new features to it. On the other hand, we really do want to see Badge-Hunter not get left behind because HeroStats is dropping support for web site updates. We've been talking pretty hot and heavy on our administrative (non-public) forums over possibilities. I just sent you an e-mail to your badge-hunter.com address. Hit me up on Gtalk if you get a chance, I'm tonyv@cohtitan.com. -
Quote:I synchronized your forum and CIT passwords to your CIT password. Give it a shot now.I'm having trouble logging into the titan forum. I used the password reset which worked for the cit but the forum still won't accept it. The Sentinel also doesn't want to track my characters atm either.
Also, you might have to clear your cookies for the tracking and everything to work. If all else fails, hit F2 and try logging out and back in.
I just logged in and didn't have any trouble. Are other people having any issues? (Are other people not?) If I've hosed something up, I definitely want to fix it! -
Are you kidding me? With zombie invasions, Rikti invasions, battles breaking out in the street, buildings exploding, and all of the other various mayhem and insanity that occurs, would you want a car in that city? Is it any wonder that most of the cars that you do see look like they were built back when there was a USSR? (And that they probably came from some barely industrial country that was part it?)
Remember, it's a different universe. Not everything is like it is here. I think that pretty much everyone takes the train (which is probably hardened and battle-shielded) wherever they have to go, or holes up inside. At one point, there probably were lots of cars, as evidenced by the number of roads and the layout of Skyway City, but that time is probably long past.
As for the people wandering around Portal Corp... Aren't they mostly possessed? -
And that oughtta do it. All I did was put our main site files under revision control and pull the source back down, so you shouldn't notice any difference. As always, though, whenever you make any changes, there's a risk of wonkiness happening. If you notice anything, let me know!

Hey all, I'm going to take down the Titan Network sites for just a little while, hopefully 30 minutes or less, to perform a little maintenance. During that time, you won't be able to access the main cohtitan.com site or the forums over there. For a shorter period of time, you also won't be able to access sub-sites like cit.cohtitan.com, faces.cohtitan.com, etc. It won't affect non-cohtitan.com domain named sites, like the Paragon Wiki.
I'll have it back up and running ASAP, and I'll post another message once I'm done. -
Quote:Here's the thing, though. These things happen. They happened before, and they'll happen again. If they don't make sense to you, its best to try to not overthink them.
Christopher Bruce was one of the most loyal employees to the game. He was an avid player before he worked for NCsoft, and when a job came open, he moved all the way from Oklahoma out to San Francisco to be part of the the City of Heroes team. When times were lean, he was one of only 15 people working on the game. He was the only animator and effects guy. He was extremely innovative when it came to features such as power customization that everyone else had all but given up on, even the players themselves. He attended every in-game dev/rep event that I knew of, he diligently answered innumerable questions on the forums, he gave us unparalleled insight into what was happening with our game, and most of the players truly liked and admired him.
Now normally, when you have someone who has such a rapport with your customers, who has shown such unswerving loyalty to the company and its products (for god's sake, he worked on Auto Assault before City of Heroes!), and has a demonstrated history of churning out amazing work, you don't lay them off. Even when times are tight, you keep them around, because they're the ones you want with you especially when times are tight.
I don't know why the guy was laid off. From what I've read and heard, he doesn't know either. If layoffs had to happen, why lay off the guy described above? None of us may ever know. Maybe he wasn't as productive as he used to be. Maybe one of the new people is a wiz that makes him look old and busted in comparison. Having dealt with corporatie layoffs myself, most likely in my opinion, is that it had nothing to do with his will or ability. Since he had worked for NCsoft for a while, his salary, bonuses, and benefits were very likely higher than many of the other employees', especially the new people's. I could be wrong (such is the nature of speculation), but it just strikes me as a purely short-term financial decision.
But here's what concerns me. It's not that the game is suddenly going to fold. It is that City of Heroes seems to be getting more and more "corporatized." One of the things that sets City of Heroes apart from most MMOs is its community. Unlike most other games I know of, the devs and reps really do feel more like friends than overlords, which is how most other games feel. But if the company starts prioritizing other concerns such as inflating the bottom line over the loyalty, dedication, contribution, and customer relationship in their employees, what does that say about how it regards its customers or how it will treat them down the line?
My concern is that it doesn't take many decisions like this before City of Heroes becomes MMORPG #2183, ho hum, and I sincerely hope that this doesn't become just "one of these things that happens." -

Long story short, I'm being forced to play against my will by hostage takers.

Personally, I like her posts and I'm usually one to get overly irritated at massive numbers of pointless posts. Hers are amusing, many times helpful, and sometimes downright insightful. I'm guessing that there's more going on here than just, "She posts a lot." My money is on her making a suggestion or a comment on someone else's suggestion that he didn't like, and this was some sort of misguided revenge. At any rate, I think it fell way short of whatever he was trying to accomplish by posting it.

I tell you what, why don't you worry about your own characters, and let me build mine in the ways I see fit. That way we are both happy.Quote:Originally Posted by TonyVDear Devs:

Something with the forums is borked, I can't edit my OP.
Still, I did release a new quiz a few minutes ago. It is called...
Abbreviations - Know thy Origin! (2010-11-13)
Good luck, and remember, don't cheat! -
I still miss Ex Libris. This news may be a month old by now, but it's still going to take me a while yet to fully process it.
-
What? No I didn't, and you can't prove that I did!
Behold the power of having access to edit the answers! Seriously, though, I could have sworn it was in there. Assuming everyone who got to it would have gotten to it, add four to the number of times it would have been answered correctly. Since it's (no surprise, probably) listed last, it shouldn't have affected any other answers. -
Quote:Well, as two of you figured out already, I went ahead and posted a quiz that is, in theory, a little easier. The answers aren't that hard, but the challenge is mentally getting them in order before the allotted time is up. If you're feeling up to it, give it a shot. Here it is:I got 18 - and I spent the last 2 minutes of it trying to remember the name of the Croatoa Issue
-
That's still a better-than-great score. That one is the one that is missed most often.
I'm thinking of publishing one or two of these every week or so. This one was pretty hard, some will be a lot easier. -
Yeah but there is a minuscule difference between "fly" and "fly faster." On the other hand, there is a huge difference between "fly" and "can't fly." Personally, I can't imagine why anyone would take fly now other than for a concept character. Why would you waste a perfectly good slot to get somewhere far away in 21 seconds instead of 24? I know some people who don't have a travel power at all, and they suffer very little.
I get what BlueRaptor is saying, and to some extent, I agree. The pool powers have pretty much all become blah, and the only real differentiation is in your primary and secondary powersets. -

Just for fun, I've created a Sporcle quiz. Given the issue number, release date, and major features, can you come up with the issue title? Give it a shot and see how well you can dig way back into the early days of City of Heroes.
Note: Some of the conversation below has spoiler answers, so for the full challenge, take the quiz first before reading the thread!
Think we could make a minor forum rules exception and call out the devs on this one? I'm curious how well the long-timers (Posi? War Witch? Castle?) who were instrumental in these updates being released can remember the banner under which they released them.
Quick hint: I've tried to list the major features that I think most reflects the title first.
P.S. Yes, I know, it's trivially easy (no pun intended) to cheat on this quiz. There's even a link to the Paragon Wiki page that lists all of the answers right there on the quiz page itself. Don't bother, though; as soon as the time expires, it will reveal all of the ones you missed. It's not a competition, folks, it's just for fun.
P.P.S. List of published quizzes:
- Abbreviations: Know thy Origin! (2010-11-13)
- Alphabetical Archetypes (2010-11-12)
- Name the Issues (2010-11-12)

Hey, your shoe's untied. HA HA!!! There's something on your shirt...
