I'm not saying they're planning it that way, they may not even know they're going to do it yet, but I still bet they do.

You're not talking about those old-style red-and-blue glasses, are you? Granted, I haven't seen a 3D movie in ages, but even when I saw the last one years ago, they were using polarized glasses that had no color to them. Most home theater/computer 3D implementations that I know of use LCD glasses that "blink" with an extremely high refresh rate, so fast you can't perceive that each lens is "off" half the time. Again, those glasses are either completely opaque or completely clear, no colors involved.

There are 3D technologies out there on the edge that don't even use glasses at all.

  4. I don't mean this in the spirit of discouraging you, but have you looked into what is involved in releasing an app for the iPhone? I actually pondered releasing a reference app for City of Heroes, basically a simple mission/contact-lookup app.

So I sent $99 to Apple with my developer's application. A week or so later, they sent me an e-mail saying that they wanted me to send them a hardcopy of proof of my identity, so I did. A few weeks later, still not approved, they sent me another e-mail asking me to send a notarized copy of proof of my identity. Keep in mind that nowhere in any of the application materials does it say that this kind of information in that specific format will be required.

Now, around this time, I had also read a lot of horror stories about developers getting applications stuck in Apple's approval pipeline for months, some being rejected outright for stupid reasons, and so on. I sent them a pretty scathing reply that basically boiled down to the following: I've heard a lot of problems from other developers getting apps published. It has been over a month since I applied to be a developer, and I feel that you're placing unreasonable demands on me in getting accepted to the program. Based on this, I tend to believe that the horror stories I've heard from other developers are probably true. I am doing this only as a hobby, not for commercial purposes, and frankly, with all of the trouble you have put me through to date, you have convinced me not to use the iOS as a platform. Please refund my $99.

They did, and I haven't looked back. It's too bad, because I did spend a lot of time and effort learning Objective C, time and effort I really could have spent on more productive things. Speaking of which, if you've never programmed in Objective C before, it ain't easy. Make sure you understand what you're undertaking before you get your hopes up. It's a language in which you have to do low-level things like manage memory allocation, things I haven't had to do in a modern language since like 2000. Also, its syntax is significantly different from C-language variants such as C++, C#, Visual Basic, Perl, Javascript, and Php. It's not impossible, but be aware that it's a lot harder and pickier than those.

Oh, and you probably know this already, but to develop native iOS apps, you must do so on a Mac using Apple's Xcode developer platform. There is no option for doing so on a PC. I've run across people who were interested in it but who didn't have a Mac, and getting a Mac that also serves as a decent developer platform ain't cheap.

Maybe you won't have the same experience, and if not, then I'll wish you luck and look forward to seeing what you produce for iOS. I just want to make sure that you understand that developing apps for the iPhone isn't like developing apps for any other platform. For one thing, there is no free hobbyist option. For another, you have to get everything you do--everything--past the gatekeeper that is Apple, and my personal experience is that it isn't worth the trouble.

  7. I just had to add a couple of shiny pennies' worth of thought to this thread.

I diligently try to avoid assigning much individual credit to the folks at the Titan Network because I really want to build up teamwork and avoid making any one person's skull expand to a large degree. Still, I feel the need to heap high praises and compliments on two members that have been busting their collective butts the past couple of weeks, and that is Diellan and GuyPerfect.

Everyone probably is already aware of the Sentinel application that GuyPerfect released a couple of weeks ago. He's been almost the sole person leading that effort and discovered the mechanism by which the data is reported without having to parse out data that is, at best, ambiguous and difficult to get. It represents a significant evolution in our character tracking abilities.

Meanwhile, on the drop of a dime, Diellan took over another developer's project with very little background or graceful turnover. Not only has he come up to speed in an excruciatingly short time, but he's really owned the project, making significant improvements.

I just wanted to add my "Thank you!" to the chorus for both of these guys who have really stepped up to not just keep the Titan Network running, but add significant contributions!

It's not a binary scale. It's not necessary that mission difficulty must be either pablum or apocalypse. There's nothing wrong with having a mission that requires a player to burn some inspirations, but not so hard that it requires a trayfull of purples/reds/whatevers.

Let's be honest, the vast majority of missions tend to be on the pablum scale of things. As a result, I think a lot of people have decided that getting defeated is a bug, not an incentive to try new things to not get defeated. Personally, I wish the game had more tough, but not impossible missions; missions that are really difficult to get through without getting defeated; missions that do require a few inspirations, temporary powers, or patience and debt from an average player to get through successfully.
  9. Belle's account got locked. She was pretty upset about it. Not so much about the prospect of losing her stuff, but because she was afraid that it meant that someone may have been out there broadcasting spam as her.

It took a day and a half or so to get it straightened out, and the CS team was very helpful.

I definitely think it was the NCsoft accounts we're talking about and not the game accounts, though. It locked everything. The pain-in-the-butt part for me was that I was trying to buy up bonus packs at half price on Monday, but it wouldn't take my credit card because it's the card that I use to pay for Belle's account, and it wouldn't accept it. Luckily, I have a PayPal account that had some money in it. If I had been locked out of getting the 50% off deals, that really would have sucked.
  10. Incarnate mission spoiler below...

So I've been seeing all of these posts and threads about how long it will take people to respec out of Fitness, move purple IOs around, complaining and wanting the devs to changes various systems to accommodate huge changes to characters, and even a thread about how inconvenient it is to have to run a mission arc to unlock Incarnate content. Everyone is so anxious to get all of their stuff on all of their characters, right now, with little time invested, no consequence, and no cost to their desires!

Am I the only one that got a good chuckle during the arc when the player is presented a "choice" of drinking in all of the Well's power and being consumed by it, or taking it in a slow trickle, training slowly over time to be able to handle this new power? I can't help but wonder if the developers are trying to sneak in some kind of message there. Even if not, I can't help but think it's funny, and wonder how many people got mad or were disappointed when they found out that having their will--maybe even their very soul--consumed by the Well wasn't an option.

It just seems a bit, I don't know, metaphorical, maybe even allegorical.
  11. Pocket D is like the Roach Hotel of Praetoria. They can check in, but... you know the rest.

Thinking about it, I haven't been in Pocket D as a Praetorian. They really don't have any kind of map marker for the exit? I'm glad this was posted, because if I hadn't have read it, I probably would have been one of those poor, trapped souls.

  13. Warning: Lots of spoilers below!

First of all, repeat to yourself (Guy...): It's just for fun. Don't get so worked up over it. If there's an answer that you feel justified is correct, just do what I do with some of the other quizzes: Make a mental note, "Hey, I got that one right!" It's not like I'm keeping a permanent record or, for that matter, can even tell who got what. If there is an answer you feel is justified, let me know about at and why, and if I think you're right, I'll add it as an acceptable answer.

Now, having said all of that...

The mechanics of the quiz allow multiple answers. I used people's "real names" as much as I could as the display answer, but I loaded it up with people's "villain" names as well. For example, for Arachnos, all but one person answered correctly. The display answer is "Stefan Richter," but I'm guessing no one actually typed that in. Most people probably typed "Lord Recluse" or some variation of that, and it takes that. I even added what I imagine would be some common misspellings of names. You should see how many variations of "Eochai" I put in. I apologize if I missed some (I didn't see "Devoure" coming, but if you had typed "DeVore," "DaVore," or even just "Vore," you would have nailed it). I've added Tub Chi, Centre, and even DeVour/DaVour as alterate spellings for those respective answers.

Which brings me to another point. When there are multiple names for someone or something, or answers I think are right, I try to capture that as much as possible. For example, there is an in-game reference to "Gyrfalcon" who is on the Council of Leaders who leads the Malta Operatives. If you type that in, it will give you credit for that answer, although it will show up as "Council of Leaders" when it displays. So if, after a quiz, you're thinking, "Technically, Julianne Thompson leads Crey after murdering Clarissa van Dorn!", hey, try punching it in because it might actually accept that as an answer. Julianne Thompson has been a legitimate answer since I created this quiz just in case someone did.

I wanted to talk about sourcing for a second. In the quiz, it says at the top, "Source: Paragon Wiki." That's where I'm getting these answers. According to the Paragon Wiki, it says on Requiem's page, "He was originally the leader of the 5th Column and seems to have resumed his post as of late." Now keep in mind that I don't have a lot of time to run these task forces personally to validate all of the answers, so to some extent, I'm just trusting that whoever made that edit knows what they're talking about. If it's just plain wrong, let me know and cite why you think it's wrong, and if you make a compelling argument, I'll add the answer as a valid one. (And while you're at it, correct the Paragon Wiki, including your citation!)

As for the Minions of Igneous, if there's more than one answer that's justifiable as correct, I'm not going to rule out a "wrong" answer just because someone thinks that one answer is more "right" than another. In-game, one of Sam Wincott's diary entries says that "Koago" means "leader." That's compelling enough for me to consider that at least a--if not THE--correct answer. He's clearly considered by the Igneous in the game as a leader. Given the link to Manticore's post, I've also added Inglebert Maahs and Igneous as AN answer. Reading Manticore's post, it sounds like Maahs is Koago.

Regarding Rularuu the Ravager, read the article. There's no indication in it that Rularuu is dead or isn't still, at least on some level, the leader of the Rularuu. Maybe later I'll add the names of the aspects as correct answers.

I'll ponder Baron Zoria later; right now I've got to go to work. I definitely consider him at least a leader of the Circle of Thorns, though, and I don't know of anyone else who could be considered his equal in that role. If we knew the name of whoever it was that inhabited his body, I'd add that as an answer too (kind of like Scaldi/DeVore), but as far as I know, we don't.
  14. Yeah, I accidentally had it down for around five minutes, give or take a couple, due to a mistake in creating a vhost. I thought, "I'll bet no one even noticed..."
  15. Good thing you got fitness, because your brain's going to need it for this workout. I just pushed out another Sporcle quiz to amuse and delight you in between beatdowns on the shiny news in Paragon City. Please note that there may be spoilers below, so for the full quiz experience, take it before reading the rest of the thread! If you find that fun and interesting, try out the others I've published also:

Some are gimmes, two or three are probably nigh impossible. Don't let that stop you, though. Give it a whirl, have fun, and let me know what you think!

Are you referring to Badge-Hunter.com? If so, the short answer is no. The longer answer is posted here.

We'll look into supporting multiple instances of CoH. There's no technical reason it can't be done, it would just take a some programming acrobatics.

Are you honestly trying to argue that "it doesn't affect you" is still a valid argument when these exploits most obviously affect players that have no desire to run them? Or are you just saying that it does affect everyone but that the net effect of exploits and those who use them is positive? Because that's suspiciously like what it sounds like you and some others here are saying, and that notion is incredibly stupid.

Once again, I'll try to be as clear as I can. People who initiate and propagate exploits should be banned. People who participate in exploiting should have their stuff taken away. People who try to justify exploiting, whatever idiotic rationale they come up with, do not have the long-term health of the game at heart and their opinions in this arena should be summarily disregarded.

When I was younger, I heard a story once (probably an urban legend) about a man who suffered such agonizing migraines that he finally gave up. He shot himself in the head. As luck would have it, though, he lived and managed to destroy the part of his brain that was causing the migraines, and went on to live a long and happy life. I also heard a story (probably also an urban legend) about a man who was so despondent that he went to the roof of a skyscraper and jumped off. A strong updraft caught him, though, and blew him all the way right back to the roof that he had moments earlier jumped off of. He was so moved by the experience, believing that it was divine intervention that saved him for a higher purpose, that he devoted the rest of life to helping others who were thinking of taking such tragic action.

Based on these stories, one could surmise that if you have a headache or are feeling a little down, you should shoot yourself in the head or jump off a building. These notions should be ridiculed for how foolish they are, as should be the notion that exploits are somehow good for the game or shouldn't be addressed in a manner that keeps similar activities from occurring again.

Then what's the harm in simply giving everyone an instant "Make me 50" button? Or why bother with influence/infamy/information? Or for that matter, with recipes and salvage? Just put a vendor in every zone that a player can click on and get any inspiration or enhancement they want at no cost. In fact, why do we even need inspirations and enhancements? Just enable a "god mode" where players take no damage and can insta-kill any enemy. While we're at it, give us the ability to enable a "ghost" mode where we can go through walls, or even an instant-recharging teleport power that will let us go to any location in any zone immediately. Don't forget the "Badge Out" power that will immediately grant you all of the badges in the game, too.

"It doesn't affect you" is never a valid argument, not for anything in the game. Ever. I see people use it all the time, but it's just plain wrong. That's not to say that there aren't valid arguments for things that people use this argument for, just that this argument is completely facetious and meaningless.

This is an MMORPG. That means that nothing you do happens in a vacuum. In cases such as this exploit, it affects the market, it detracts from zone chatter, it drives new players away who "win" in less than a day and think the game is boring, it irritates veteran players who get on a team with level 50 newbies who don't know what they're doing, it completely breaks the immersion of the game, it spits on everything the Architect system is intended for and makes finding worthwhile stories extremely hard to find, and all of that is just off the top of my head.

Even in minor cases, at the very least, it affects the tone and quality of the game. It is meant to be of approximately x difficulty. What happens when it becomes trivial, as these exploits have made it? How often have you played Tic Tac Toe since you figured out how to never lose? Probably not very often, because it's boring as hell. Did you think, "Hey, maybe I'll challenge myself and never play the center box, or limit myself to only two corners..." or did you just stop playing?

With people using these exploits, there's a very serious risk of people leaving the game simply because it's not interesting any more. There's little reward to work for when it's all just handed to you in six or eight hours. And that is the crux of the argument. What will lead to the greatest long-term success of this game? I've seen games destroyed by cheats and exploits, and I can tell you that I'm 100% sure it is not allowing those who engage in such practices go unpunished.

Quick correction: If you sign up for the game, do just enough missions to get to level 10, create a supergroup and a base, put yourself on /hide, and sit in that room all day and never go outside, never talk to anyone, never interact with the market, never be seen, and never post on the forums, then I'll agree that what you're doing doesn't affect my playing.
  19. Hey all, what's better than stuffing yourself stupid full of Thanksgiving leftovers on a long weekend Saturday? Why, tying your brain in knots with yet another Sporcle quiz, of course! I decided to make this one "short." I've edited the list in the OP above with the new quiz, and I'll paste it here as well for convenience in case you don't want to scroll all the way back up:

Enjoy, and as always, good luck! (And also as always, remember, it's just for fun; there's nothing to be gained from cheating except that oppressive disappointment in letting yourself down...)

A "Short" Note: Although I think it is, I won't promise that this is an exhaustive list of the badges. There's one in particular that is probably going to be added in Issue 19 that I didn't include because it has never been on the live servers. If I missed one or two, don't fuss, just remember, it's for fun, and the hints should help you in figuring out which ones I'm looking for!

Not only do I agree with this 100%, but I'll go even further and say that you should have an "instant sell" button so that the market essentially also functions as a vendor.

"Oh, Kinetic Weapons are going for 20 influence right now? Screw that, I'll just--*ding!*--sell it for the 200 I can get for the store price."
  23. Zzzt! This implies that the devs intended to make these exploits available. That's simply not true. It's more like this:

An ATM has a bug that causes the machine to give out $100s instead of $20s. Does the bank:

    1. Audit their records to see who discovered this and repeatedly used the ATM to get a crap ton of money and take whatever legal steps are necessary to get it back (oh, they knew, they KNEW they were getting too much! Cheating bastiges!), or...

    2. Suck it up and take steps to ensure it doesn't happen again. (He withdrew and re-deposited until he had millions. Oopsie! Well, we don't want to lose him as a customer...)
