I take combat jumping on all my melee characters, so hopping out and back into a spawn has just become second nature, and the half second delay is worth it in how many enemies I hit with it.

As to elec, I've honestly just always felt that none of the attacks other than lightning rod have a decent reach, and chain induction on a brute is just disappointing after my elec/shield scrapper. I really, really hate thunder strike with a passion. Most melee AoEs are either a forward projecting cone or a PBAoE, but TS is a targeted AoE with a tiny radius that requires you to be in melee range. Honestly, TS turned me off of elec permanently, so I'll go ahead and put that bias out there.
I wish you could see my elec/elec/mu in action. I maximize every single AoE I have available, but it has taken me a year to squeeze out as much performance as I have, both from the build and playstyle. I even like it more than my elec/sd/blaze scrapper, even though the scrapper has more AoE damage potential.

I'll never kill single targets anywhere near as quick as Fire. But in terms of pure AoE capability, nothing touches Elec. In terms of team performance, any AoE build suggested will work great. However, lately, I enjoy soloing 3/8 on my brute and I am always beyond the aggro cap, which means every AoE attack is being used to its full potential. You don't get that lucky on teams.

But, spin looks impressive. I really don't need another brute.

    Wait, what am I saying?

  4. Veteran rewards demonstrate the dedication players have had to this game.

How belittling would it be to every single veteran in this game if the many things they have been given because of their long-standing loyalty are immediately rendered useless?

Unfortunately, I am just coming up on year two of subscribing to CoH (woohoo!). It means that there are many cool things I wish I had that veterans can do. I wish I could have a travel power at 6. I wish I had those little pet things. That extra storage seems nice too. I do envy those players, and I wish I had some of those cool things.

Sure, I'd be happy to throw money at CoH to get those things. But, that leaves the veterans of this game - the very players that ensured the game remained a success this long feeling a little disenfranchised, and that is hardly fair to them.

So, after a long sigh of wishful thinking, I have to agree with a vehement no.
  5. Someone died in PvP. True story.

Reading this topic has actually made me want to PvP some of the posters here. Wanna fight about it?

In the abyss in Aion you are in a PvP zone, but can expressly choose to do only PvE missions which involve you killing NPCs. There is a greater reward to do this. However, you are also a reward to any hunting party that might happen to stop by. It's annoying to get ganked when you're trying to do something besides PvP. It's even more annoying if the other side has complete control over the very area you'd like to be. I suppose I should just ask them nicely to let me go finish my NPC missions there then.

It's why I think Aion toting the acronym "PvPve" is nothing new to MMOs.

In Aion, if I wanted to do a PvE mission in a PvP zone where Elyos controlled that reagion, I had to find some friends to go drive off those self-righteous Elyos. Then a few hours later, I'd join my legion and go camp the starting area and we would kill Elyos by the hundreds. Was my behavior griefing because I kept those Ellies from doing their missions? Hardly. I never was banned, and I did this nearly every evening for a week.

This topic would have been locked by now on the Aion boards, simply because players understand the nature of PvP. Here, PvP is taboo. To actually see some people imply that they should be able to acquire a shivan without being pestered by a PvP'er is maddening. It is not griefing if a player decides to consistently prevent another player from using a heavy, or getting a shivan. It's PvP, and the PvP'er is using the zone as it was intended. I'm not sure the Devs would ever say that our use of nukes and shivans in TF's was ever 'intended'.

None of the PvE arguments will hold water in a PvP oriented game. The reason they do here is because CoH wasn't designed around PvP, and there isn't incentive for a regular player to even consider PvPing. (I'm talking about practical incentives, not pipe dreams). No real resolution outside of a redname posting in this topic is ever going to be found. In the end, the best resolution is to call the shivans a PvPvE mission, because that's pretty much what it is.

I've probably gotten 2 kills in CoH PvP. I got over 1600 in Aion in two weeks. Those numbers alone sum up my position on CoH PvP.

I guess I'll have to make due with 139 characters.
Whatever am I going to do?
I chose the option of getting more slots by having two accounts. It made life a lot easier when it came to finally setting up a personal SG.

    Anyway, Future 50's.

I have a few projects that will be my next series of 50's:
Thugs/Therm MM - I'm thinking this one will be able to solo GM's when I'm done.
Assault Rifle/Cold Blaster - Soloing mobs I'll pull them onto ice slick where I can set them ablaze with flamethrower.
Dark/Sonic Corr - with power customization, that yellow ball can be even more noticeable.
Other than that, I've been having trouble lately coming up with things I want to try, so I've been enjoying this thread (I know I already said that).

(I know its classified as an aoe, but hitting 3 enemies of 30 packed around you just does not count imo)
First, Electric has more AoE than Lightning Rod and Jacob's Ladder. You have Chain Induction (which is no longer bugged), Thunderstrike, Jacob's Ladder, and Lightning Rod.

Second, Jacob's Ladder is a cone. Players treat it as a single-target attack with a chance to hit others, but it really isn't that hard to reliably hit more than one target without slowing down your attack chain.

Thirdly, when it comes to dealing AoE damage to multiple opponents at once, no other melee power set has as many AoE attacks to consistently deal damage to more than one opponent. It suffers a lack of single target damage for this.

It is also true that the pseudo-pets have a lower damage cap, which means that Lightning Rod is much more effective on a scrapper, having a higher base damage, and not being limited by fury.

    Quote:
Fire will give you excellent single target damage, and FSC makes for decent AoE, if you really want more AoE, take a patron AoE and slot it out to give you a three move chain with build up, which will be fine for high level farming. Fire breath is also superior to most of Elec's AoEs if you really want to take it.
I agree with everything except for your claim about fire breath. I would not place FSC+FB in the same AoE category as LR+CI+JL+TS. I don't think any other set offers the potential for a completely sustained AoE attack chain.

I'm not a PvPer. Don't really have the mindset for it and want to worry about the perfect mouse/keyboard combinations and hopping like a meth addled squirrel all over the map to make myself harder to target and all that. But I can understand where the OP is coming from -- PvP in CoX is pretty benign and I'd probably at least give it a go if I was attacked while collecting shards. Back in games like Everquest where you'd lose gear or risk having your corpse camped by someone... nah. But in CoH there's really nothing to lose so why not.

I understand the "why not?" of "Because I don't want to ever!"... well, I understand that that's your reason and respect it. I just can't wrap my mind around it.
    This!

Even if I'm not a PvP'er, I support their right to kill PvE'ers in any PvP zone and I support your ability to run away, if you can. I didn't realize how fun PvP was until I began wondering why in the world my heart was pumping when I played Aion.

In any case, it is a moot point. It's risk vs. reward to a PvE'er, and many judge the risk as being worth it. It's just another wimp to a PvP'er and many judge the risk of getting whined at as being worth it.

edit: To clarify, I don't PvP in CoH for numerous reasons, but mostly due to its present state of balance. I expect my character to act and behave in a way I'm familiar with, and they do not in PvP.

It's better than aid self. Even though I had gotten good at firing aid self in the middle of a fight, Energize is not interruptable and can be fired at any moment. On top of this, it recharges fairly quickly enough (33 seconds for me) that by the time the regen has worn off, I'm ready to fire it again. Then, it also frees up a power pool, and one free power, allowing you one more power to take.

  11. Welcome back to the game.

Energize is definitely a reasonable addition to ELA, and it does help it perform better.

It helps put things into perspective and get an idea of what the team is focusing on right now. I'm not exactly delighted that the transfer tool is currently down, since this was actually the first time in my two years in the game that I actually was even interested in using this feature, but I'm not going to blast the dev team for something this minor.
  13. Thanks for the info. I do appreciate it. Hopefully the devs can get it resolved quickly. As soon as it's up, you're guaranteed at least one transfer.
  14. That explains why I couldn't find the option. For the first time in my two years of playing I wanted to move a lvl 50 to expand into another server. Wouldn't ya know, it's down. Please fix it quickly!

edit: please let me know when this is up again. My brute is all ready to go.

This is my Elec/SD/Fire as it currently stands. I haven't chosen to invest in purples yet, so my recharge is lower than what I would like. The panacea also is not in the build. (actually, right now any expensive unique IO isn't in place yet). But I got to the 45% def cap for M/R, and it performs quite well, though it is in terrible need of the numina and miracle uniques. Excluding the uniques, it cost me about 350 mil or so, and I was a bit impatient with the recipes and salvage at times. Someone got a really nice profit off a decimation recipe from me.

I'll disagree with the set choices, but the advice is good. For Elec/SD, you have 4 potential AoE attacks, which either can take scirrocco or obliteration for AoE or melee defense. I lean toward obliteration for the 5% recharge bonuses. That leaves mako for the range defense.

In any case, there are quite a few sets out there, and as has been said, there are quite a few builds to look at. You'll be much happier in the long run if you take 30 minutes and peruse both the scrapper and brute forum for these builds and take notes. Because, in the long run, it is your character, and your playstyle you are spending your inf on.
  20. If you were wondering why I posted this, it has both practical and sentimental reasons. To begin with, it's just fun reading about different people's accomplishments in the game, and what they find fun. But, as you look at my list of 50's, you'll see that I'm rather lopsided with this game, and I'm paying particular attention to blueside characters (but please, no recommendations - keep with the premise). Oh, and I'm running out of 'IGHT' words. So, thanks for all the replies.

I also realize not everyone in the game has a 50, so if you have a character you really like and he isn't 50, go ahead anyway.

    So, my complete list:

Sprite Night, Elec/Elec/Mu Brute, first 50, and my main. I don't have Catwhoorg's impressive login time. I'm just over 1000 hours on this one. This was the one I had my Ebil picture taken on. Oh, and yellow electricty looks awesome! Thank you, devs!
Sprite Might, SS/Elec/Mu Brute. Everyone said SS was awesome, so I had to have one. When I got knockout blow, I was sold.
Sprite Fright, DM/SD/Soul Brute. After nearly a year trying to come up with a build that could handle the Eldersnake map (I want a real challenge), shield was released and siphon life became awesome. Currently, this is probably the only toon that can handle 2/8 spawns of Eldersnakes. Those things hurt.
Soulbrand, Earth/Psi/Soul Permadom. I haven't decided to invest in many purple sets yet, but she is sitting at 85% recharge. I looked at those fire/psi doms that would decimate mobs in Grandville and wanted to be awesome like them. I've learned I'm not as talented at control as many others.
Crimp, Rad/Kin/Scorp Corr, A little lizard with 45% S/L/E defense and jump kick.
Operative Solace, Crab Spider - This guy's bio is funny. He tolerates other heroes, but they seem to call him Operative Shoe Lace for some reason.
Critique, Nin/Nin/Soul Stalker - I wanted a good PvP toon, and this was to be it. It's been ignored, mostly because while it's a beast in PvE, I haven't been very successful in PvP with this. Probably because I'm a brute at heart, and playing a stalker like a brute may work in PvE, but not in PvP.
RIGbot Sprite, Mace/Stone Brute. I saw a RIGbot in broadcast one day and found an excuse to make a toon with teleport.

    Pyrhiccup Fire/NRG/Fire Blaster. See OP.
Radiant Lumens Ill/Rad/Mind Controller. I made a build I really liked on mids, but forgot that I have little influence. So this poor guy after my final respec, I dumped all the SO's on the way to 50, and he's been sitting empty without anything. He'll see the light of day some day.
Sprite Bright Elec/SD/Fire Scrapper. This thing is just silly. Obviously, I have no clue how I can explain how someone shoots fireballs and throws lightning bolts. But, it is just pure fun. It has all the basic IO's. The expensive ones I'll get over time.
  21. Since altitis runs rampant among fans of this game, I am proposing that we indulge ourselves in a brief reprieve to explore how we have found ways to treat this pervasive disorder.

My Elec/Elec/Mu brute, Sprite Night, continues to be my favorite character to play. It was my first 50, and has gone through numerous respecs. The recent improvement to the set has just made it even more enjoyable to play. It currently sports 30% melee defense on top of already impressive resists, making it one of my most versatile brutes.

My Fire/Nrg/Fire blaster, Pyrhiccup, who alas was unable to take fire breath due to my goal of the range softcap, was my first hero 50, and is still my favorite blueside character. Between being able to punch away anything that comes near me to the joy of melting your opponent, I have greatly enjoyed this character. It sports 46% ranged defense, and hovers over the battlefield raining fire down on the helpless mobs.

Anyway, that's enough about me. What about you?

Not when you take attacks that animate in under 1.5 seconds. Incoming damage just lets me get fury faster. Stun all you want. Just let me swing at things. You can even open up with flash/cages if you want. I can maintain fury fine without being attacked.

It's ironic that you mention the one AT that easily nullifies knockback redside.

It's not too hard to wait 5 seconds to let the brute pack things in nicely before lockdown. It's the doms that spam the AoE immob before everything is properly aggroed that die very quickly on teams. The loss in fury is negligable. The greater loss is the loss of AoE damage, whether it be fulcrum shift, lightning rod, footstomp, fireball, sleet - you name it.

The player that carelessly spams knockback does a team a disservice. The player that carefully uses knockback does a team a great service. There's a big difference. Most NRG blasters will tell players, that if I knock something back, I'm killing it. To which, the brute will happily let them and move on to something else to smash. But, I'm not going to run all over the place and individually taunt because my AoE taunt doesn't cover the radius of the entire map!

If you are on my team and feel the need to knockback everything I just herded, you can kill them yourself, because I will not chase them down individually on my Elec/Elec. Of course, I'll adapt and open up with my AoE immob and take you right out of the picture.
