Mixing core system dlls from different versions of windows is a surefire way to cause instability and compatibility issues with your machine. Not to mention that it will probably break future patching, or at least itself break if you apply patches in the future.

Actually, Vista was fine - if a little demanding - after SP1, certainly after SP2. Windows 7, on the other hand, has been pretty much solid (IMHO) from the start. It has some niggles and a few issues with really old hardware/software but so far I haven't found anything that I haven't been able to make work except for an old webcam (and that was because I'm running 64-bit, there were perfectly functional 32-bit Windows 7 drivers available).

Quote:Copy cohupdater.exe and cityofheroes.com out of your game directory and onto your desktop. Then run cohupdater.exe. If it asks you where to install it (it may or may not), just point it to C:\Program Files (x86)\ (It'll then say "Will be installed to C:\Program Files (x86)\City of Heroes\ - don't point it to C:\Program File (x86)\City of Heroes\). Let it do its thing and update/apply.Kitsune I did what you said in your post changing the user name and it didn't work. Still getting the same message:
Access to the path 'C:\Program Files (x86)\NCsoft\City of Heroes\cityofheroes.exe' is denied.
any other ideas?
You should then be able to delete the copies on your desktop (along with any other temporary files it's created) and run the updater/launcher again as normal. It seems to be some specific to 64-bit windows 7 (and possibly Vista) as I came across it when I did a clean install during i19 a few months back. -
Quote:I know, I know, but I left it in place just in case they decided there was anything else that only Launcherees would be getting-launcher is a special flag we're not supposed to be manually using
And I'm fairly certain it provides no benefits from repeated use...
Like I said, serves me right and at some point I'll get around to using the launcher but right now it's more trouble than its worth until I find a way to get Steam to use it and track the game properly. -
Quote:You say that, but if I run ye olde EU updater without specifying the auth server I get a serverlist with "Unnamed" in it and nothing else (and a Failed to Connect to DB Server error if I trying to connect to it) - it was working fine pre-i20 updateThe US updater needs no special flags, and, still works perfectly fine. AFAIK, that -auth parameter tells the game to use the EU authenticator server instead of the US one. A shortcut created to launch CoH back in i6* would work just as well now.
* And probably i0, but I wasn't around back then so can't say for 100% sure.
Edit: Actually, it's sort of my fault, but still a change in behaviour. If it run the update without any switches, it works, but if I run it with -launcher than I have to specify an auth server to avoid the "unnamed" server. Still, it worked yesterday with -launcher and without -auth. Serves me right for all the unsupported fiddling really -
Apologies; I wasn't trying to advocate or provide advice regarding pirating XP, merely attempting to refute the argument that piracy was the reason for everyone still being on SP2

Quote:Run:I am not destroying my OS again for the game. Can someone post detailed instructions of removing the NCSoft Launcher and instructing Cohupdater.exe to use the old launcher instead of queue the NCSoftLauncher to launchCode:
"C:\Program Files\city of heroes\cohupdater.eu.exe" -launcher -auth 64.25.36.15
Code:"C:\Program Files\city of heroes\cohupdater.exe" -launcher -auth 64.25.36.15
Can't verify that the US version uses the same auth server (or even that you need to specify it), so it might not work but someone with a working US version and a copy of Process Explorer should be able to get the right authserver IP
May break at any time. I take no responsibility for anything, etc. -
Two things to try. First, run the updater/launcher As Administrator. If that doesn't help then what I found pre-launcher is that initially I had to copy the updater + cityofheroes.exe to my desktop (or anywhere that isn't the game folder), run the updater, let it do its stuff and then I could quite happily run it from the game folder again - something to do with how the updater locks the executable and then can't write to it when it needs to update it.

Quote:Are you running XP (as implied by your post) or Vista/7?i cant run the updates on COH it keeps giving me this message
Access to the path 'C:\Program Files (x86)\NCsoft\City of Heroes\cityofheroes.exe' is denied.
Im not thrilled about this new log-in page....have had nothing but problems with it. This is the 3rd time i had to re-install it and its getting old.
now I have to download SP3? what happended to the easy log-in! (sorry just fustrated) -
Quote:Vista or 7? Sounds like you might need to run it As An Administrator.Any idea what to make of this:
"Error Code: 58 (FileGroupApplicationErrorRollbackNotAttempted):
Errors occurred while applying the patch,
and a rollback was not attempted.
The product is likely in an inconsistent state and should be repaired or reinstalled.
The patch application errors are as follows:
Access is denied. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED))"
Repeated attempts to repair produce the same results...I'm dreading reinstalling -
If you really don't want to use the launcher then you can launch the game with:Code:(for the EU version at least - I think for the US you can just omit the -setlocale, might also be a different auth server) and you'll be fine for the time being.
-launcher -setlocale 1033 -auth 64.25.36.15
Are NCSoft planning to update the Steam version to use the launcher? Because otherwise they're going to have a lot of very confused users on their hands when they can't login any more. -
Quote:Launch the game using:just so you know, all of you saying 'why didn't you upgrade, are you nuts?' does nothing but frustrate those of us who either didn't or can't.
get off of your high horse. realize that if those of us using XP SP2 can't play or figure out a way to upgrade... we're gone, not because we want to be, but because we can't play anymore. you shouldn't be jerks to fellow players who help keep this game going.Code:-launcher -setlocale 1033 -auth 64.25.36.15

Quote:Or, you know, as you have to make a conscious choice not to install SP3 by disabling automatic updates (people subject to domain policies excepted) and you're creating a risk for not only yourself but others on the internet too by continuing to use something that is unsupported, unpatched and has been for almost a year, I think I'm entitled to be frustrated by people's unwillingness to update in order to get CoX working. From my perspective, there's only two ways to look at the above :
- you're genuinely surprised people have different interests in life and might not care about computers as much as you do. If that is so, might be worth it to step outside and reconnect with the real world every once in a while.
- you're trying to act smart in one area you can claim expertise in. Bad news : stepping on people never made anybody taller. -

Quote:The plural of anecdote is not data, but I oversaw the update of circa 2000 machines from SP2 to SP3 at work via WSUS without any notable issues. Was about 2.5 years ago mind.To this day, SP3 bugs on install roughly 50% of the time. An issue that Microsoft is well aware of but has largely ignored. Many people have avoided SP3 for the very reason that half the time installing it bugs Windows to a point where either rollback or complete system re-install is required.
Updating anything that has the Microsoft logo on it is reckless at best.
Microsoft really need to start making slipstreamed ISOs generally available (you can already get them via Technet/MSDN/MVLS), because they make life a lot easier (and rolling your own is tedious, if fairly straightforward). -
Quote:1) The old updater still works fine - for the time being at least.so- i got to update to SP3 in order to run the game due to the new launcher / patch i20 content , when it ran fine beforehand. well, my machine goes haywire when i try to do that , so since there isnt a simple option to remain with the old launcher, and i cant seem to get SP2/3 to " take" on my machine, after playing since 2009 , i 'm going to have to cancel?
thats fine, WoW here i come again - i really dont need problems being created for me i get to beat my head on my desk to solve in order to play a paid subscription Game-
the old launcher was just fine- now with this new one and no " stay with old one" option, and my isues with updating successfully to SP3 , i either have a headache for hours battling the issue and downloading this and that , or selecting a 2 min process "cancel account / billing" key.
pretty simple choice for me -
Hint: Dont engineer problems in- if SP1 would pull the launcher perfectly fine, why code in something that requires SP3 ? if it aint broke, dont fix it.
2) Because SP2 has been out of support for almost a year now, SP3 has been out for 3 years and there are two more recent versions of Windows in the wild. At some point you have to accept that support for older platforms will need to be dropped in order to take advantage of new features offered by more recent platforms. -
How on earth are so many people still running XP SP2?
SP3 has been available for 3 years now and SP2 hasn't been supported (i.e. no security updates) since July 2010.
Running software that out of date on a primary device is reckless at best. -
Yes. It's awesome.

If I remember correctly, the market matches up the highest listed item with the highest bid that meets the listing price.
So if you have something listed for 1 million and someone else has the same thing listed for 1.5 million and someone bids 1.5 million for it then your item won't be sold. -
Quote:I actually meant it from an IC point of view, rather than as a player punishment, which I agree would be needlessly harshAgain, technically, yes, your statement makes sense. But this would punish the player for making a character RP choice. Just like after you defeat LR in single combat (as part of a team), he doesn't send 500 Toxic Tarantulas after your insolent little upstart a**, so too the Devs decided that making you lose all of your inf on character changeover would be a) too draconian for the players to sign on, and b) just encourage workarounds (like setting bids on market recipes only to rescind them later and get the refund).
I often think these questions are like arguing about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. -
Quote:Very true, though it does present some interesting questions with regard to how the Inf economy functions, not least because of the ludicrous levels of inflation; you would pretty much have to single-handedly fight off an entire invading alien fleet to be able to get so much as a bacon sandwich from a thankful citizen. Stopping a purse-snatcher would barely register on their radar as they would otherwise have to spend 24/7 repaying favours to heroes - if anything it's become so expected in Paragon that not helping people out in those situations would probably lead to a *loss* of influenceSo tldr, it's money for the players, but not for the characters.
On the subject of which, shouldn't heroes who become villains or vice versa find themselves with negative infamy/influence respectively? Wouldn't a villain have to work off all that infamy before they started to be able to acquire influence from people? -
It is money.Quote:It may not be directly equivalent to any real world currency, it may not even be comparable to the dollar, for example, but it meets all the requirements of being called "money".

I should be able to attend both days (I'm terrible at planning anything more than a few hours in advance) as it's just down the road from me (I'm in Harborne) and I can bring my laptop (though I haven't actually tried playing CoX on it at any point, so I should probably do that).
In essence, despite looking like I'm totally uncoordinated here, you can put me down
