Quote:Solution: Action my support ticket and delete (or rename if you have to) my US Trial account *before* the DB merge even takes place.I *am* a DB admin (though not for Paragon or NC). Though every DB is different I'll offer my best guess why it was done this way.
The EU global server is being merged *into* the US one. In order to do so at maximum speed, to keep the maintenance window small, there has to be minimal failure conditions and solutions. In this case, records are copied over, and if one produces an error it's assumed that's because a field required to be unique (the global name or account name) is duplicated. Since this is an automated process and no human will be there to interpret every conflict, the incoming name is changed.
Checking the last login date of each of two conflicting accounts causes too many possible problems. What if they're the same? What if they're within a few hours or a few days? What if both accounts are inactive? All these checks eat away at the maintenace window and produce the possibility of failure.
The who logs in first method would require keeping the old EU database running somewhere, possibly forever, waiting for each EU player to log in to be copied over.
Simple. -
Quote:I understand not doing it globally, I don't understand not doing it on request when the accounts are both attached to the same master account and therefore ownership is not in question.I do apologize; however, trial account names will not be changed. I realize this may cause some conflict with EU accounts that share the same name, and again I apologize, however the trial account login names will remain the same.
However, trial account global names will be changed to "trial####," preventing any conflicts with EU global handles.
Sorry for any inconvenience the account name changes may cause. -
Quote:I have, give or take, 30 or 40 username/password combinations that I have use on a fairly regular basis; if you look at the ones I use on an uncommon basis, it's probably 60+. Anything that unnecessarily changes those things is an annoyance; anything that unnecessarily changes those things where there's a very simply way to avoid them, is infuriating. It's an account name. Noone ever sees it. Why would you care? :/
This isn't so much "I love my username and can't live without it" more a "Please don't pointlessly change my username and stop me from doing anything that would prevent you from having to". -
Well that's an improvement at least (and would have been useful if they'd mentioned that in the email); still stupid that my account name will change for the same reason.
-
Quote:*sigh*How are you screwed over or penalized? Because you have to type different words (that no one ever sees) into two boxes on the internet.
No. As I said before, it's because of my global handle, which will be forcibly changed as a result of a clash with my inactive US trial account.
Yes, I could pay to reactivate it - or wait for the free reactivation after my handle has already been changed - and change my global name there, assuming I even have a free rename on it. Only problem is that I either have to pay money and/or waste a global rename to set my "EU" handle back to what it should be.
Point being, all this stupidity could be avoided if they'd just delete my bloody trial account (which they could still do, my support ticket is still open). -
Quote:If you don't object to these things then you end up with the kind of things EA keep doing and nobody wants that.Yeah I guess on some level it's a bit shameless for a company to "remind" us that they have other games that we could play. But as you say many other company's are already doing that so objecting to that on "principle" is definitely splitting hairs that are barely worth splitting at this point. YMMV of course.

Quote:See: Every game or application that insists on trying to install itself into "C:\Program Files\<Company Name>\<Application Name>\" as if there's no chance that you *wouldn't* have so many other apps of theirs that you need the help to "organise" them.Actually, my objection to it is the same as all the other companies that use a unified launcher: I don't need to be reminded/advertised to about your other games. If I wanted to buy them, I would.
From a usability standpoint, the launcher is fine. I object on principle.

Quote:If you're going to make an executive decision as a dev to screw me over because of my own trial account, attached to the same NCSoft master account, and not allow me to do anything about it, then I reserve the right to get wound up about it.You can't rename old/trial accounts to Trial###### because then a returning playing would never be able to log into it. It is also probably policy not to delete any account for any reason (probably even your own active, confirmed account).
All in all, it is just the thing you type into a box to get into a game.
I sympathize with the EU community on a lot of the hassles they deal with (esp. maintenance times and formerly server restrictions) but account name is pure fluff. First world problems indeed.
I understand why they chose to "penalise" the EU players rather than the US ones (simple numbers) and that doing it on an individual basis is impractical (numbers again), but at least give us a chance to avoid these problems where it's easy to do so. -
Quote:Nope, the old updater still works fine - well for me at least but I'm not launching it "traditionally" - and as far as I'm concerned until they update their Steam install (Steam, remember that? You sell your game through it sometimes) with the NCSoft Launcher so I don't lose all the nice functionality, I'm not touching it.Actually it probably does matter because a few months ago when the Devs introduced the new launcher they told us that eventually we'd all have to use the new one as a replacement for the old one. Sounds like today's patch finally made it mandatory to use the new one.
The new one really is better than the old one anyway. It updates the game quicker and it eliminates the need to have multiple shortcuts on the Desktop for Test and Beta. *shrugs* -
It's a tough one balance-wise when dealing with buffs, but I feel that powers like TP really do need to work cross-team because it's a real pain not being able to use them.
FS should work fine cross-team because it's an AoE buff that works fine if you're not teamed at all, as opposed to things like the Leadership pool, Grant Cover and the like which are team-specific. -
Interface "enhancements" affect any powers that do damage; it may not be that simple to alter their behaviour - especially when there are other options available that don't fall afoul of this issue.
-
Of course, this whole discussion is kind of irrelevant to the vast majority of players who don't read the forums and will simply log on one day to find that their global name has changed and they have no idea why or if there's anything they can do about it.
Edit: Just noticed that I do have a trial US account, which is odd because I don't remember ever setting one up. Time to log a support ticket. -
Quote:The fact that most people's login names are being changed because of clashes with *their own* US accounts means that there's a good chance it will result in a clash of global name as well unless the US accounts can be deleted. It's not even as if you can login to your US account and change the global handle without paying to reactivate it - assuming you even have a global rename token available. This is about Login names, not Global names; whether or not your Login name is duplicated/changed has nothing to do with your Global name.
It's annoying if you lose your global name due to someone on the US servers already using it. It's unacceptable if you lose your global name due to your own inactive US trial account.
The devs said they would do their best to minimise issues caused by trial/inactive US accounts when they did the list merge, so now is the time for them to step up and communicate this to their support teams. -
Quote:Because if your Trial US account and EU account share the same *Global* name then your US one will take precedence and that would be very annoying.Does it really matter? It's the login name; the launcher remembers it, you only have to change it once.
My NA & EU accounts also had the same login name so my EU login name now has "EU" at the front; my only issue is although they sent me an email about this weeks ago (and again a day or two ago) they have yet to reflect it in the account name in the master account. -
I going to make the crazy suggestion that you shouldn't slot Reactive on a character that relies on lots of sleeps. Just like you wouldn't slot proc IOs into the sleep powers.
Although presumably Mass Hypnosis isn't affected as it doesn't do any damage? Because it if is then that's a bug that needs fixing. -
Same here, I also noticed this, which is a change from what they'd previously said:
Quote:Should you have a global chat handle naming collision, your @global name will be reset to the last character you logged out of -
Quote:As they say, just because everyone else might be worse than you, it doesn't mean that what you're doing is goodOur government is a damn sight better than most any of the alternatives; it takes an extraordinarily perverse view of history to harp endlessly on the USA when the far worse flaws of her enemies are staring everyone in the face. Or, perhaps it's just cowardice: after all, the USA never threatened to decapitate a cartoon artist over a caricature.
As for the Cap storyline, I suspect it's nothing more than a rather transparent attempt to increase sales, much in the same way as Supes' supposed plan to abandon his US citizenship because he keeps being associated with their actions. -
Quote:Can you blame them? From the moment it was implied that the reward you received for the trials was anything other than completely random, people have done nothing but ***** and spread misinformation.I hope this all helps. Take the information with as large of a grain of salt as required to swallow statements from devs who up front said they weren't planning to reveal everything about the system or its operation, and indeed, didn't clearly alert us to its existing in the first place. Me? I can't find that much salt.

My question is, when one of the Silence said "Silence Will Fall" what on earth was it referring to? I can't imagine that it was talking about the future demise of its race at the hands of some hypnotised humans, nor that it was using the phrase in the traditional sense of "small s" silence falling.
Equally, using it as a sort of play on words combination to mean The Silence will occur/come to be/etc doesn't really make sense either because they're already there and have been for thousands of years.
Am I just missing something really obvious? -
Are you running Windows 7 x64?

It's .NET based so I'm guessing it would be a massive PITA to port to Android (mostly Javaish) or iOS (Objective-C, easier but still a lot of work), though Windows Phone 7 runs a subset of the .NET managed code IIRC so that might be more viable, though still probably a lot of work.
