I can see the point that it doesn't make sense that bokken or escrima sticks would do the same kind of damage as a bladed weapon.
On the other hand with power customization, it really shouldn't make any difference what the FX looks like.

A character that can hold "normal" shield on their arm is not necessary going to be strong enough to hold a manhole cover up with one arm! - and that's an option.

There is a baseball bat in the mace weapons-customization selections, so any reasoning behind not allowing batons or baseball bats for dual blades or katana are kind of thrown right out the window.

Bring on the non-lethal power-customizations for the more brutal power sets!

  2. By-and-large, there is not etiquette in regards to completing missions. And I never ask if it is okay for me to complete a mission.
If someone is farming a mission, they should be polite enough to tell me before I accept an invite to join the team.

As far as glowies go, most of the time all you get is some small amount of xp. It isn't really that much, and it doesn't make that much of a difference in the long run or in my enjoyment of the game if someone else clicks a glowie.
If I was on a certain mission where I knew that I have the potential to get a temp power and it was my mission (and I really cared enough), I would make it clear to the team that it is my mission and there is a temp power in one of the glowies, so don't click them and to let me know where they are so I can click them.
I have never done that. I really don't care if the rest of the team clicks the glowies and/or gets the temp power.

If you are on a PuG, it is going to tend to be a bit wild.
Players tend to be a bit disorganized initially, and they may have preconceived notions about the way teams behave in general instead of figuring out what the other players can do and working to use their powers to augment the rest of the team.

In general, I tend to run "No Tanker/No Scrapper" PuGs. We do pretty good generally if people work together. The time that things tend to go wrong is when someone decides that they are a Tank (and don't have powers to cover that illusion) or automatically think there is a Tank on the team (apparently don't have their team window open), and race into a group of foes when they don't have the protection of Taunt (not that many Tanks seem to have Taunt anyway...) or their own defenses to deal with the agro.

Remember that the leader of the team has the star and they may very well have a good plan of how to get through missions with the kind of team that they have built.
Most PuGs end up just being a group of people running around until something gels -- when couple of players or the whole team start working together. When that happens, the enemies don't stand a chance.

I'd say that a good PuG team etiquette point is that you do not become the leader of a team simply because you were invited to a team....regardless if you are a tank/"can tank" or not.
The Tanker-centric team is not the only kind of team. It is not the only kind of team dynamic or team tactic that will work and/or be efficient in this game.
Tankers certainly don't become the team leader simply because they were invited to a team.

You don't need a "H3A70R" in order to defeat the enemy. H3A70Rs tend to do very little damage. You have to do damage to defeat the enemy.
There isn't always one to recruit. No reason to stand around all day looking for one or to keep complaining that there isn't a "healer" on the team.
Heals are nice, but buffs and debuffs are very powerful as well and can often compensate for not having a character with the ability to heal other players on the team.

Team tactics win out over almost any foe regardless of which ATs are on the team.
It is unfortunate that I have to be picky about the ATs that I select for a mission in order to vary my play experience by changing team dynamics. Some players are picky feeling that they have to have a tank and a "healer" on their team; many PuGs are like this.

Keeping all the enemy bunched up is not always the way to defeat them.
Stringing them out means that fewer of them are attacking your group at one time and you can defeat several as the rest are running up to catch up. Sure you can't pile on AoEs if they are stretched out and a Tank would have to Taunt a couple of times to group them once the enemy arrives (having been whittled down a bit), but I think that's better than eating floor.
Other AT's using tactics work just as well as a Tanker herding or pulling.
The point of this game is the variety of powers that are given to us. It is a shame to think that there is only one right way to play the game. You don't need to min-max in order to make a successful character or run a successful team.

I PuG pretty much all the time because I'm alt/side/server jumper. I'm a 60+ month vet and I try to play some almost every day.
I have only been on a small handful of teams where the leader wanted to click their own glowies - and they did make that clear in advance. The majority of PuGs that I have been on the motto is "If you see a glowie, click it - but help us fight any enemies that were are in combat with first".

The only teams that I have ever been on that don't complete missions were farm teams - that's the only reason to reset a mission and run it again. These team leaders tended to wait to announce that they were going to reset the mission until the mission is almost over ... and the mission tends to be a very long mission that has a very good end mission reward.
I have a right to that very good end mission reward, if I helped to complete that mission. The rude behavior at that point is on the side of the person running the team that is suddenly telling me that they are behaving in a non-standard manner once it is time to collect the reward - aka the last minute reveal that they are farmers and that they are going to reset the mission.
It is also rude to form a team, wait for players to cross zones to get to a mission, expect them to stand around while everyone assembles before going into a mission, and then, right before clicking on the door or right after going into a mission, saying that they are farming the mission and not to click the glowies or complete the mission. That's wasted my time.
If they knew they were going to be farming, they could have said so during the invite or as soon as I joined the team.
If I knew it was a farming team, I wouldn't have joined in the first place. If they said it was a farm once I had joined, I would have quit the team.
Of course, once farmers are out of the equation, I usually don't have to bother about the glowie clicking or missions ending questions; the team is trying to click glowies and complete the missions!

Once you publish your mission go to search and pull up the "your missions" tab - it's named something like that. Then click on the published arcs tab. It will show you the missions you have published.
You can also search for them using your global name or key words.

Remember there are 300K+ of these missions so it easy to get lost in the shuffle. It is hard to find your missions by just using a general search. The way it is now, you really have to know what you are looking for to find something. So using key words in your description is critical for allowing other players that may want to find your mission to be able to do so.

I don't think that is a great idea.
Others have already posted about how that will lead to multiple character with the same name running down the street at the same time.
I would certainly hope that every time someone runs into someone with the same name they would have to stop and fight them for the right to use that name. They should even add a mechanic that forces you to change your name if you loose the fight.
Then they might have something - but then again - that was my idea - so if they do implement it - you saw it here first.

[color] [animal, totem, weapon, etc.] - Black Canary
[any descriptor] [age related gender description] - Superman
[alignment descriptor] [power related name] - Black Adam (yeah, that's a color, but he was really called "Black" Adam because he was "evil"...I just can't think of a better one at the moment)
[size descriptor] [power or any descriptor] - Little John
[size descriptor] [color] [power descriptor] - Little Red Riding-hood
[age related w or w/o gender description] [any descriptor] - Kid Eternity
[Rank, occupation, etc.] [Country, color, power-related, etc] - Doctor Midnight
[descriptor] [Rank, occupation, etc.] - American Maid

You get the idea, but we know that there are tons more...
Once you have this basic convention then making an automatic name generator simply isn't that hard.
Once the system automatically generates name it checks to see if that name is taken on the server yet. If it isn't taken yet, then the system locks the name until the player decides if they want the name or not. If they like it, they start directly into the game.

But wait? How would that work you may ask.
    Simple.

The basic variables are picked from your character design.
The system knows your gender, powers, size, physical, attributes, costume choices, costume color options, weapon/shield choices, etc. From these variables it generates random names base on the standard comcbook naming conventions.

Adding such a feature would not stop the rest of us from picking our names. I know that I always will, but allowing an automatic name generator to be added to the game would help the people get names quickly.

It will not, however, stop people from complaining that they can't get the names that they want. When it comes down to it, that is what these naming threads are always about.
  7. Cool. I'm not that late to this one. No time to read the whole thread now so I'll jump in spastic for a bit of ranting

    1. Keep the majority of fog low-lying so that the level above normal sight from the ground is clear. This will allow players to superleap, fly or tp above the fog and not have to worry about running into buildings.
    2. Vary the concentration of fog. Have it thinner in the first part of the zone and thicker (about how it is now) back near the graveyards. Also have the fog thicker around the Banished Pantheon groups.
    Quote:
    B) Villain diversification: Right now Astoria is a one-note town, and that note is Banished Pantheon.
    ...The Circle of Thorns...
    Here's my take.
Dark Astoria is the most "Goth" zone in the game. It needs to be "Goth"-ed up.
    Where are the vampires?
    Where are the werewolves?
    Witches?
    Ghosts?
Where the heck are the zombies!

Move the mission doors (or some of them) out of the graveyards and into town proper. Now add a chance of zombies spawning on the graveyards. Don't spawn them right on top of characters. Spawn them in the distance so that they can slowly amble toward the players and make sure you can hear them before you see them!

The two major things that the zone needs are ::
    1. a normal mission contact set that you can walk into the zone and get missions from - like the Hollows, Striga, Fault Line, etc.
    2. a patrol/police scanner contact - like Megan (can't remember her names) in the Hollows.
    3. Horror-based Taskforce. Yeah, there are some cool mystic taskforces. Let's get a good horror one in the mix. I'm not talking slasher, but "monster" themed.
As it has already been pointed out...
There just aren't many missions in Dark Astoria.
No real reason to go there.
The fog makes it hard to get around.
It's a cool zone that needs a good bit of DEV love.

Give us a good spooky place to hang out.

Heck. I'd love to see a bonfire in the game somewhere - and it's dark all the time in "Dark" Astoria.

I'd would much rather see work done on Dark Astoria rather than on Boomtown....or at least before Boomtown...
  8. The writer is apparently just trying to bait CoH players. We have a pretty strong and active community. Having a lot of posts on their article makes it look like it is a good article to some. I think it was pretty uninformed and opinionated. There are lots of other games that don't get the kind of DEV love that this one does.

When anyone says "They need to make a Coh 2", I just have to laugh at the writer. What was CoV? It was CoH2, and it is now combined into the game. CoH:GR is going to be in beta soon. That will be CoH3. These writers are behind the curve. It seems to me that they don't even know that we get FREE Issue updates a couple of times a year that are often of the caliber of paid Expansion on other games.

Apparently the article writer doesn't understand that players post great ideas for this game in the forums every day and that the DEVs do get around to implementing some (if not many) of the suggestions that we post in the forums.

I probably should have pulled it down as satire and parody are only allowed in certain situations, and we all know that the signature characters are "related" to RL individuals. It is time to study search-fu!

People have been complaining about not getting names for years. I think it started even long before the first anniversary of the game.

You get the idea, but we know that there are tons more.

Honestly, I don't have slots left to go pick an obvious name, make a character, create it, and get that name or something close to it on the 2nd or 3rd shot.

If you really want "that name" then try on another server. The names are taken once per server. Names do over-lap both sides of a server.
I know this because I have a couple of character (same name) that I have on multiple servers.
Once I tried to have a hero and a villain with the same name on the same server, but it won't let you.
One time one of these names was already taken. The character name was two words, so I simply added a 's after the first word.
    Easy enough.

So please refrain from the ~<[name]>~ or /\[name]/\ or xXX[name]XXx
    Please!

I shutdown completely (powerdown). Then restarted my system and I was able to get into the City the first try.

I'm assuming that you restarted your computer after you updated the video drivers. You usually have to do that.
If you haven't restarted your computer, I would do that. Let it get completely up.
Then shut it down completely (powerdown), give it a minute or two and then power it back up.
Then try to get into the City again.

I always get First Aid>Aid Other for my Poison MM's. It helps head toward the Self heal in the med pool. As long as you let your pets do most of the fighting, you will usually be able to use the Aid Other whenever you need to.

I may have a Leadership>Assault on one of my MM's as a test (low level). I haven't worked an mm up to a high enough level where I would even think about purchasing the whole set.
Having said that, as Leadership tends to multiply with the number of targets that are affected by it, it seems that Leadership would be a very useful power for MMs. Part of the problem, however, is that your henchmen have to be relatively close to you. Most mm's let their henchmen run all over the place, to it may not be as useful to some that let their henchmen run free.

I usually don't spawn my pets "outdoors" unless I'm going to stick directly with them because I'm in-combat.

Inside missions, your pets will generally be able to keep up with you regardless of what travel power you are using as they have a power to instantly tp to where you are when you get too far away (or at least they used to).

First off, you can't /respec to another secondary. Just make another character. We have plenty of slots! (well I don't any more, I'm full at the moment) I think that the Poison set as some great debuffs - and what debuffs the enemy - might as well be buffing you - as the effects turn out to be about the same.

I tried to read through the rules pretty thoroughly. I didn't see anythings saying that you couldn't submit the same arc for multiple categories.

You have to send a different e-mail for each entry, each entry must be for 1 of the 5 categorizes, and labeled as such.

Read the first section on submissions and it will explain how the title line of your e-mail needs to include which contest you are submitting the arc for in a numerical 1-5 fashion.

Someone else noted that we can only submit 1 arc per category, that does not mean that you can't submit one arc for multiple categories.

  17. I'm answering your post name question "How early is too early for IO's?"

The obvious (but what some people will automatically give me flack about) is level 6.

I have slotted level 10 IO's on characters at level 7. Not fully, but some IO's here and there.

    Is it worth it?
Yes, if you want them, if you have the influence for them, and/or if you don't want enhances that will expire. - or if you have them sitting around the base because you made some for a crafting badge.

I have tended to try to slot out my characters completely with level 20 IO's (so starting at level 17).

However, now that the leveling speed increase effects characters past level 20, I may be rethinking when I slot IO's.
It is very likely that some players will level up 5 or more levels on a good team before they have a chance to take a break and get more enhances. So having IO's means that you will at least get some benefit from enhances.
At the same time, is it worth waiting until you are a higher level instead of running around with IO enhances that are 5+ levels old?

I have a feeling that I will still be trying to slot with level 20 IO's and throw some in there at random at lower levels.

If I don't have the time, inf, salvage, etc to build IO, then I may or may not run to a store to buy some to slot until I get around to making or getting IO's from my base to slot them.

PvP in any game that is fun to PvP in has relatively balanced character types. In those situations, skills as well as luck play a part.

The ATs in CoH were created with an intentional imbalance. There really is no way to correct that.
The game was created and then later on down the road, the DEVs added PvP because players requested it. So it was never thought about during the initial development of the game.
Characters with Mezs don't like not being able hold the enemy and get beat down by them any more than Tanks/Brutes don't like getting held by Mezers and slowly crushed to death. Mezs were nerfed and the ATs that were already resistant to Mez's didn't have their Defs or Resistance nerfed. That's just one type of example.

The best attempt that I have seen from the DEVs for PvP was the Gladiator system, but that is inherently imbalanced as all players don't have the pick of all the gladiators to make their teams from. They can only used the ones that they have earned. Of course, some have earned more than others, and it should be obvious to those that have played gladiator battles which enemies are the most powerful.

I think it would take much more time than it is worth to balance out the AT's enough to make PvP fun for all players - and many would be upset that they couldn't use any enhancements at all in PvP (you'd really need to implement a no enhancement rule to have any chance of making it balanced). Of course, changing the AT's that much means that you would need to redo PvE as well if you are going to have PvE enemies in a PvP zone - so then you are looking at is making a completely different game from scratch.

When you have players that are way more powerful than other players that then mock the opponent that they have easily defeated, it is easy to see why players don't enjoy being "schooled" by someone that thinks that they are L337 in a PvP zone.

PvP will be fun in CoH when it plays like X-Men vs. Streetfighter ... in 3-D - I'm not seeing this happen any time soon.

The star rating system is great for keeping track of good players, so is using gfriend-ing. Turn the option on to show ratings and you can always see that player you gave 5 stars too. I really wish the DEVs would add the stars to the search system.

I have the highest average levels on Freedom (no 50's) and Virtue (1 50) -- averaging at 27.21 and 28.21 respectively. And the least average levels on Liberty and Pinnacle -- averaging 12.92 and 13.33 respectively. I have 1 50 on Virtue, 1 on Champion, and 2 on Triumph. (totals as of the beginning of Sept)
I like to jump around from Server to server a lot. I play what I feel like playing unless I get paired up with one of my SG chums and help them along on what ever project they are working on at the time.
More or less I use my 50's for helping out my lower level characters and lower level characters in the various sg/vgs across the servers.

    I made at least 22 characters the first week that I played. Those first 22 are at the following levels 7, 11, 12, 15, 16, 16, 16, 19, 20, 20, 21, 22, 24, 26, 28, 32, 32, 40, 42, 50, 50, 50.
Some have lower levels because of they server they are on and not being able to find teams when I log on with them.

I generally log in, do some trading, join a team if I get an invite, see if there are enough characters on to start a team around my character's level, maybe solo for a bit, and then move to another server to start all over again.
I tend to like playing lower level character more. As teams increase in level, it tend to turn into a light show and I can't see what is going on. When it reaches that point, it is no longer very fun for me.

I like focusing on having fun playing the game. Leveling is cool, but I'm in no rush to get to 50 with any of my characters. They will get there when they get there. I like to check out the various ATs and power sets. I also like to try different combination of AT's on team (you don't need a tanker, scrapper, brute, or healer to have a successful team).
  23. Since you are on Villain side I would get the TP's later. You can get Raptor Packs for parking in Grandville or paying 10k for 2 hrs in Granville. You can get BM TPs at any BM for 10k or parking there.

You don't need power for storage (other than a vault), and you didn't mention medbays. If you are going to get multiple, tp'rs you will need to get more than the basic combo power supply (it only has enough power to cover one tp, a med bay, and a vault. - if you have the second sized tp room you can put one tp'r in there and two beacons).

So I would look at storage first. The entry room is free. Put in the second sized warehouse room - the square one. Put in an enhancement storage or two and a salvage rack or two.

If you really want at least one tp'r fast, then go for the oversight room and the combo power/control generator.

However, if your goal is multi-zone teleportation, you will need a full on power room with power supply and a separate control room with control unit. Don't try to scrimp and buy the small tp room if you can help it, put in the one that is 3x3 (fits 3 tp'rs). that way you won't have to juggle stuff later.

I'm pretty sure that one of my sg's juggled all this into a small plot. If you have more than one storage room going, you will need to get the next larger sized plot, but there is no real problem with increasing the size or moving rooms around later (you can move rooms with all the stuff in it.)

Oh, I also agree with trying to get a coalition going. Don't now what server you are on.

I use Freedom which is normally full and active and for the last week nobody around. Is COH dying? I know Champions online just launched. Did COH loose most of it's base to Champions or are they just dying slowly?

This is wierd cause COH has always been active in the 5 years I've been playing....Now it's like empty!
When the AE was released, there was a huge influx of players from other games that were apparently just joining CoH in order to take advantage of the exploits in the AE.
Of course, if you want to exploit CoH, you want to be on the busiest server you can to be able to take advantage of a full team.
There were a good number of players that didn't want to farm/pl in the AE and so they moved to other servers. Some moved their character instead of just making new ones on other servers.
So when i16 dropped, suddenly many of the players that were exploiting the AE - and could no longer do so because of the changes in i16 - apparently quit playing.

Also, as you may know, there have been on-going problems with server overloads on Double XP weekends. There were so many players closed out the last time around that were complaining about it on the forums that I know at least I posted threads for them to make characters on other servers so that they would have characters to play elsewhere if they were locked out of Freedom again.
On the same note, there are rumors running around that Freedom had a server upgrade. I haven't seen anything to back this up from the DEVs. If this did happen, then that may account for the server showing a lower "load". However, some players say that Freedom and Virtue were upgraded to higher capacity servers quite a while ago, so...who knows what kind of numbers those bubbles actually mean at this point.

Uh, they opened up the Hazard Zones so that teams with SSK'd characters could get into zones where Hazard Zone gates had kept out mixed level teams before, but that has nothing to do with them wanting players to co-op farm in the Rikti War Zone.
Show me a quote where the DEVs have said that they have opened the Rikti War Zone for Co-op Farming.

The DEVs aren't pro-farming. I would like to see a quote where they say that they are. They have said all along that they are against farming because it decreases the longevity of play for some players because they find it boring. When the AE was released, they initially made it clear that they did not want the AE used as a Farming or Power-leveling tool.
Practically everyone that has been around the forums since the AE release knows about Positron's "ten-ton hammer" speech about the AE.
Now I can't easily track down those old - but clearly anti-farming posts by the DEVs, but I know you can't find one that says that the DEVs are pro-farming.

The ability to fill maps for 8-man teams was an attempt to stop farmers from tell spamming other players. This is not a pro-farming move, but, hopefully, a move to stop farmers from harassing other players.
