Quote:I didn't post the post that you replied to, but, I will say, as much speculation as you made in regards that they posted what they posted, I would think that you do know that there are some reasons why personal/private global channels are bad for the game.Part of me wonders why on earth you think this. Part of me says I don't want to know. Part of me says you typed this just to be prat and get yourself flamed.
I can't say that I'm really pro-global channels myself. If people want to use them, that's fine. If they want to make their own private channel, and pick who's cool to add to it - that's fine. I used to use the global channel (the main global channel) quite a bit until it started conflicting with the the global friends list.
I play on all the servers, and, for the most part, global channels are really just used as server channels. The only two channels that I've run into that were true global/cross-server channels were global and the Repeat Offenders channel (it is across Freedom, Justice, and Virtue). Even with an update to the number of global channels I could have, they really aren't very useful for my play-style unless they are for players across multiple servers/sides.
Some servers use them for specific purposes like Badge hunting, GM hunting, etc. While this may seem to be a great idea, it is only good if you can get into it. If the first channel fills up and a second is started, the second one has a much lower population and is, therefore, less useful.
Other servers use them for things as primary to the playing of the game as getting a team - I'm not saying that they can use it to get a team, but it has been implied that it is the correct way on that server to find a team. There are other instances of this kind of use, but this example is pretty clear on how it can harm the "normal" operation of the game.
(The question with this one becomes :: if you know about the channel, why not use it? Simple. I shouldn't have to use it to find a team. I turn my flag on and send tells. If another player simply won't team with me because I'm not on a global channel, then that is on them and not me. I'm not memorizing a different secret handshake for everywhere I go in this game - and it pretty much is everywhere.)
When sg's only team with sg members, it is bad for the game.
When you have to be "in the know" (aka know that you need to be part of a certain global channel to find a team), it is bad for the game.
There are new players looking for teams. Most new players are PuG-ing it.
Fostering new players is very important to the game's longevity.
Fragmenting the player base is a bad thing for the game as well. I imagine what it would be like if you could only team with characters of the same origin. Doesn't make much sense does it? Only teaming with SG members or players on certain global channels is far more restrictive and fragmenting than that.
Instead of focusing on how to make it easier for some players to find teams and information, perhaps a method for helping all players would be better.
Unfortunately, the [Help] channel - aka /hc - has taken a dreadful hit when it was converted from /help. (I'm not going to debate the switch here.). Even if someone figures out how to use it, using the /hc channel for finding a team is often discouraged by some players. This is, unfortunate, as it is a server-wide channel for getting help - which could include: GM spotting, Badge hunting, teaming, and relaying valuable information to other players. I agree that it should not be used for general chat.
I have to say, that when I did use the /global channel, I did switch character/server/sides to help out when someone yelled for help against a GM, having problems with missions, couldn't find a team, etc. So I'm kind of sorry that global started causing so may problems with the global friends list that I finally had to drop it.
So back to the original point "Why two channels?"
I think that two would pretty much cover it - /hc and /global.
The problem only having two, of course, is the number of players trying to use the channel at the same time.
I'm not trying to pass any gloom or doom, but in general I think /hc and /global could handle most of server and global traffic at this point - general chatting aside.
I know that isn't want really was being asked, but that is, in fact, my answer.
Global channels would certainly make more sense to me if I could set them up per character or, at least, per server. I do think that they fragment the community.
Global channels do have a max membership. They do fill up. And you aren't on /Imcool if you can only chat on /Imcool2.
So what should happen?
Should the DEVs increase the max membership of globals or should players that are using globals start using /hc (server) and /global (cross-server) in order to embrace the entire community?
It isn't like there isn't broadcast, local, friend, team, and sg channel to do general chat on... of course, tells both server and global as well.... -
Since no one has brought it up. Justice and Infinity have been juggling the 3rd and 4th highest server load slots for a good while now.
Justice unofficial Oceanic server - some say it is the unofficial PvP server as well
Infinity is the unofficial PvP server as far as I now.
If you came here during the AE hayday and are just looking for population - stay on Freedom or try Virtue out. If you want to branch out and really explore being a super, then make a character on every server on both sides and see what you find. Each server had a different feel and they are all worth checking out for their individual reasons. -
Against allowing multiple characters on the same server from having the same name.
While at first this looks like a great thing, it in reality is a horrible idea.
The flavor of the month name will be running along side the powerset of the month.
Really. Just like search-fu, there is a skill and set configurations that can make it easy to find a name for a character that is unique and fits the feeling that you are going for. There have been posts on this subject many times..probably since Issue 2 if not before.
I can go into the game and pick a name that I would swear would have been taken by now quite easily. I do it from time to time for the sheer fact that it proves all the great names have not been taken.
I do understand that some people find it hard to find a name, and that is why that I will stand behind the idea of a random name generator that takes such things as the characters costume colors and powerset into account when randomly generating names and checking them against the current name list before suggesting them to players. -
Quote:I would have agreed with you more if your complaint was that it was a NINJA Booster pack and not a Martial Arts booster pack. This is a game of SUPER HEROES!!! Not a ninja game. Before the last booster pack we have ninja costumes, samari (misspelled i know), Karate outfits, fighter costumeset, Kungfu Master Costumeset, Stealth, , and with all that we have powersets of Martial Arts, Dual Blades, Katana, Broadsword.... On top of that, we have military costumes with military guns (guns are not powers), and archery (which ninjas also use).
Can we please get more powers and costumes more related to Super Heroes? Maybe the ability to change my fire/kin into living fire form.
Too much ninja, and not enough martial arts for my tastes.
I do find this booster very lacking on may counts.
I am a BIG fan of MARTIAL ARTS and I most probably WILL NOT get his booster pack because I do not want it - and that is a shame.
What would have made me want to get this booster pack?
Martial arts weapons from around the world.
Martial arts costuming from various countries.
A better straw hat(s)!
Where's my turban!?
Wu Xia much?
What makes me not want to get it?
Paying for the prestige sprint. Paying for a power like this is a step in the wrong direction for this game. The Ninja Sprint is far superior to sprint and gives what appears to be even greater advantages than Combat Jumping.
Too much focus on Ninja. -
Quote:I haven't seen an MMO. I've only seen MMORPGs. This is a game with a lot of players interacting with one another in an "online" world. FPS that only allow 100 or so players to interact have not reached the MMO(RPG) level. What makes an MMO? Is it the crafting, the loot, the economy, the XP and levels? Is it? Really? I mean, I know that for a lot of MMOs, that's what they essentially are - just a skin over that. But is that really all that it comes down to? Isn't there... Shouldn't there be more to an MMORPG? Again, this is not a leading question - I honestly don't have a good answer to it. But, just... Every time I see a new MMO being made, it's always advertised like the exact same game, but in a different setting. Literally. If you manage to miss any talk about the game's setting (like I skipped in my quote), it might as well be EverQuest or some such, right down to the terminology used.
There has to be something more, right?
I've seen the arguments about how there can't be any RP in an MMO. I think they are completely faulty assumptions.
Regardless of what MMO(RPG) you play, you are playing in a world of one or more genre. They all have classes or powers that define you to be the character you are. They way a player operates a character also gives that character a personality and traits based on that players play style.
Each player is playing one (or more) characters in an MMORPG. Playing that character gives them the role to play as that character. No matter how for someone wants to go to say that they aren't role playing, they are playing a character in a game.
That is not to say that some people don't role-play better than others (this is determined by each players own viewpoint) or that some people set up rules that they think that people should role-play by or to use to determine what role-playing is.
To try to play character in a MMORPG and say that you are not RP'ing makes no sense. As soon as you enter a world as that avatar, you are role-playing that character even if you refuse to put an effort into the further customization (characterization) of that avatar.
The MMORPG typically is a model of civilization that has a layer of genre draped over it. Learning new skills, crafting, trading, etc. are all goals in normal life are what I think you are grasping at straws for. Those things that are missing from a game that are already in real-life. We usually can't have the powers, appearance, or behave in real life the way that we are able to behave in a game (not just MMORPG's but any game) The extra thing that we bring to the game is ourselves. It always has been. What really makes one game experience different from the next is our ability to shape the playing of the game by our interaction with the game - our role-playing. This can come from our sportsmanship, our benevolence, or our attitudes.
Alignments are an attempt to project sets of morals into games, but we know well that this only works if the players role-play toward that goal. You can't impose friendships in a game; they develop naturally. Supergroups/guilds/clans are a method of formulating this kind of situation, but many times they are turned into political power-mongering or drama-fests aimed at a chosen few instead of being cohesive communities designed to foster the play environment of fellow players for a mutually beneficial end.
Unfortunately, this is also true for real life.
"There really has to be something more to it, right?"
Luckily for us we play City of Heroes. It was designed as a super-hero game, but it really is far more than that. It is a comic book game and comic books have been made about virtually every genre imaginable.
I think that the naming of mechanics in a game is critical to the "feel" of the game...
...I'm too tired to go on and must end this rant here... -
Quote:As long as some players are wiling to pay higher and higher prices, the prices are bound to rise.It seems that with a higher supply and more suppliers (people farming normal content instead of AE again) that the prices would take a hit by now.
I can guarantee you that some players are cutting in at a price, buying, and re-selling with prices higher than they think they will sell - just to see if they will sell for that much.
I can also guarantee that some players are going to pay whatever it takes to buy a certain item right at that moment regardless of how much it costs. -
I'm against this.
There is generally enough in game discrimination as it is.
If this goes live, I ask the Dev teams to set up a "must have Taunt" team setting for Tanks.
Out of hand!
Knockback isn't horrible. Like any other power/power-effect, it just needs to be used wisely.
Ummm... maybe like melee characters not chasing after enemies into other mobs...
Hey, it seems like your problem is really with melee characters chasing enemies into other mobs... -
How many days ago did you open your trial?

Quote:Fortunately, the door-clicking ToT isn't the whole event.....The trick or treat mechanic, while amusing, gets tiresome after awhile, especially since I've seen iterations of this for years. It was just easier for me to put in lowball bids for Halloween salvage and cash them in for the costume slot rather than sit and click on doors....
There is Zombie fighting and the Banner-Events .... and plenty of Giant Monsters to go around.
Luckily, while the holiday event is going on - none of the other content has been shutdown.
It's fine if you have decided not to ToT any more. It's kind of like deciding you don't want to PvP or go to the Hollows. It really has nothing to do with if it is fun for other players or not because it appears to be so for many players.
One player didn't want to fight giant monsters because they wanted to ToT and tried to talk the GM team into joining them doing ToT'ing!
I've only run into a couple of "run-by" players. The ones that did it to my teams didn't seem to be doing it intentionally. They weren't staying in the same area and were just hitting doors and heading on down the street. They should have known that the enemies they left behind would end up running into someone, but, then again, some players aren't really thinking about it.
It's pretty easy to tell when it is intentional or not. I a couple of petitions can get someone into some hot water if they continue to display this kind of behavior. -

Quote:There was an active player drop around the release of Champions Online and i16 dropping. That doesn't necessarily mean a subscription drop, but that the players may be doing some other kind of activity or playing another game.... the game seems quieter than normal. I have asked other people and they seem to be in agreement.
....
Does it seem this way for you ?
There are definitely some time periods of the day when more people used to be on than are playing in those time periods now. I'm one of them. My new work cycle has impacted my gaming - when I game and for how long.
Mid week, I had a little bit of a hard time finding teams to do the banner-event. Friday night, it was not an issue.
I have been able to get all the banner badges on all but Protector (I haven't logged into Protector to try to accomplish it yet.) on heroside.
I don't know what villain side has looked like much lately as I've been playing heroes mostly for quite a while. When I go to the villain side it looks like a bunch of soloing going on and little or no teaming happening. It may just have been the times of day or the servers that I logged in on when checking out the villain side.
In general, there are prime times. If there is a time that you usually play, you can help make it a "prime time" by leading a team and actively recruiting. If you do your part to make things more exciting then other people are more likely to play. There are some that will just log in and wait around for someone to invite them to a team and then think things are boring because no one sent them a team invite. If everyone did that, then no one would be on a team.
I have to say, that there were points when my lag was so bad tonight that It was hard to transverse zones, so something is putting a lot of load on the servers. So I'll have to say that, at least for the event, it seems plenty populated to me - and in general, I'm not really having problems getting a team or getting one going and I'm 100% PuG - though recently, there has been a revolving caste of "regulars". -
Quote:The last character I leveled to 50 was an empathy/electric defender....The conversation revolved around how useless Empaths are ....
The character was in the 30's before Wentworth's was around and it was parked in the 40's for a long time. (due to my rampant alt-oholism).
I have quite a few empathy characters.
Empathy seems to be the most intensive power set off all. You really have to do a lot of clicking and keeping up with stuff to play a good empath (aka a character with Empathy). I can see why some players would think that it is too much work - and, therefore, seeing why they would think that it "sucks".
It is not all heals. Clear Mind can keep you busy, but mez resistance for non-melee characters is really cool. RA definitely is a boon for a team. Adrenaline Boost and Fortitude are very powerful buffs that can make a squishy into a front-line character.
I think of a good empath as like the ship engineer that keeps the rest of the team in-good-working-order. You're not only damage control, but you are the power-supply and special weapons.
Having said all this, I do tend to take Leadership when I play an Empath because it works well with the rest of the set thematically. -
Quote:Why wait to level 50 to make a new character?Okay that's fair, but without end game, you level up to 50 and then just start a new character and do it all over again? That seems kind of silly especially for an MMO, where the goal is to get your character to the level cap to become more powerful.
I made 2 characters on every server within the first week that I started playing.
I probably had 30 or 40 characters before I dinged my first level 50.
I have 4 level 50's at this point; a katana/super-reflexes scrapper, a ice/empathy controller, an energy/energy blaster and a empathy/electric defender. I didn't just level them up to 50 one after the other.
I'm not just talking about making GenericScrapper2. I'm talking about making distinct characters (thought I do have several characters that are on different servers with tweaks with power and origins) with origin stories/backgrounds and, therefore, different reasoning as to why they are doing what they are doing.
Also, the different servers have different flavors to them. It really can be a different kind of play experience from one to the other - and that goes from the population size, player attitudes, player skill, player helpfulness, and general level ranges.
I tend to like playing below level 30 or so more than higher than that. At some points at level 30 plus, it can turn into a huge light show and that's no fun to me. I can't see what's going on and it's just flashing lights.
Meh. Don't listen to me. I'd make more characters if I had more character slots.
Some MMO's it seems to be about accomplishing getting to the end of the game. That is the whole game is a grind until you get to that last level and then suddenly stuff opens up that you can do with the character you worked up to that end.
CoH isn't like that.
CoH is an MMORPG. Even if you aren't actively "RP"ing in chat, you can still very well be RP'ing your character by action. I know I try to do so. Many MMO's seem to confine you into dressing in an approved manner based on what gear does. CoH isn't like that at all - your clothes/look don't effect your powers - so you are really RP'ing simply by making a costume.
I don't know many people that go to comicbook stores and just buy one comic - and that same one comic every time they go to the comicbook store. Most people like several different comicbooks and, therefore, superheroes.
You know how comicbooks work. They tend to never end. The story just goes on. So maybe it is hard to understand because you aren't a comicbook fan.
To me the goal isn't to get to 50. The goal is to have a fun time playing the character. So it's about the journey and not the destination. That is to say, it's about experiencing it and not defeating it.
To be honest, I think it is kind of odd to want to role-play and then limit yourself to one role. Part of the point is to experience what playing other roles is like.
How many slots do you have free that you could make a character for that you just might fight out that you really like?
A whole bunch of them.
Check out something else for a level or two if you start to get bored with the character you are playing.
I don't get bored in the City. I just change character/server/sides.
I love this game.
If you can play a bunch of different MMO's and don't think about it as "starting all over again", then I'm kind of confused as to why doing that in CoH would be issue. You can take completely different power sets and then take completely different paths to get to 50 - if that is your goal.
My goal is to have fun. And having fun to me is being able to say - hmmm...what kind of character do I feel like playing today! -
Quote:Yes, very much so.Do you think single-target blasters pull their weight on large teams? Why or why not?
I have single target blasters and single target blasters - and mixes of the two, that is to say I operate them as single target, but, if I'm on a team that is good at holding agro, then I'll bust out some AoEs.
You can have plenty of high damage output without AoEs.
Single target Energy blasters can do extremely well and they tend to annoy teams less as the knockback is confined to a single target.
AoEs open you up to a huge amount of agro. If the Tankers on the team do not have Taunt, you open yourself up to taking a lot of damage.
People can argue all they want.
Unless your goal is to mini-max, you can make a character practically any way you want to make it and learn how to use that character effectively as part of a team if you take the time to do so.
Personally, I like to take down targets instead of just wounding them.
AoE's tend to wound a lot of enemies.
Single targeting allows eradication of a single targeted enemy. Sometimes some Lt or boss just needs to get taken out right away, and that's where single target really shines. -
Quote:This is not true in all zones. Why, why oh why, do people always camp out for Invasions by the trainers?
Talos :: People camp on the hill. - away from the trainer. (and away from the drones)
Galaxy :: People often camp down the steps from the trainer (and away from the drones)
IP :: I've seen quite a lot of camping just off the tram on the road (away from the drones)
I agree with you that Atlas, Steel, and Founders tend to be right at the trainer, but that is not "always" in all zones.
Atlas, Steel, and Founders are three examples where there aren't drones right at the trainer. So if there were drones at every trainer, then the grouping for events would not happen at any of the trainers.
As other have said, it's easy to say meet at X Signature Character and many tend to know where that is, so it's an easy reference point.
I always thought it was silly to fight where they were, but, you know, some people think that the Signature characters are important to the game and want to pal around with those "stuffed shirts" as much as they can.
I've never seen one of them take out a Rikti during a raid or a zombie during an Apocalypse. All they do is stand there and watch everyone else fight. But then the reporters come around and they start ranting about how they saved the day and mug for publicity shots. -
I missed that. Was that in Issue 1?
Quote:They take away AE, after giving it and FULLY KNOWING what it was capable of producing.
It's still there.
Quote:Yet they have done nothing about purple Io's that sell for 250-500million each.
You don't "have to have them" in order to play the game.
You only "have to have them" to be L337.
Unless you haven't heard, the Freakshow are L337.
If you don't want to pay for them, then don't complain about them.
If you want them, then start earning the influence to get them.
I get purples dropping on higher level missions (what I consider to be) quite often and I DO NOT farm.
Quote:They have cut the effectiveness of farming down to the most minimal impact possible.
Quote:thus cutting the influence earning potential for the purple io's mentioned earlier, But still did nothing to effect market values.
Like I said, when I'm running characters in that range (which I only do rarely), I quite often get a purple drops on every couple of missions.

....Hero-Con was on the Test Servers so that everyone people from all over the world could be a part of it without having to pay for travel expenses?
You would still have to pay to participate and you can only log into the test server over that week/weekend if you bought a Hero-con ticket.
Gift bags of stuff could be sent to participants as part of the "ticket" price - and/or just added directly to accounts.
There would be limited "tickets" based on the load that the test server can handle - I can guarantee that will be more people than are at Hero-Con!
All panels could be posted on youtube and characters could go to certain places in the City/Test server to ask questions on discussion panels (in advance obviously).
It wouldn't necessarily eliminate the live event. It would allow may more people to pay money to attend the convent....I mean participate in the convention!
Obviously, there are other things that could go on involving the DEVs and special events on the Test Server during the convention time.
Yeah, and probably that would be too many people for the DEVs to be able to handle at one time at any rate....
...but still....even so.... -
Quote:Well for one thing, look at the post above yours. Why assume anything based on this thread? I sent my arc in even though it probably sucked and I bet a lot of other people did too.
That person and their friends didn't submit because they didn't think they were good enough. That is especially sad to me.
Their arcs were probably better than many of those that were submitted.
I'll tell you a secret.
Often times the quality of your first submission has nothing to do with your success in being published.
A long time ago before I was published the first time, an editor told me "Your not as good as some people that only submitted one time and were never published, but you are a lot better than some people that are getting published because they kept on submitting their work."
If you only submit once, there is a good chance that your work will never get noticed regardless of how good it is. If you keep submitting works, they will not only get better because you are honing your skills as you create more works, you also start to get name recognition with editors because they keep seeing your submissions. The editors are always going to pick out the writers that they have had experience with first, but the more you put in front of them - the more likely they will say - "hey, this guys submits stuff a lot. I'll give one of his stories a shot and see how it is."
If you were around last year, you know about the huge thread in regards to last years costume contest. This thread hasn't even made it to 10 pages yet.
If people were excited about this contest, there would be a lot more chatting going on. -
Quote:That is, in fact, one of the major points about the Kheldeans. They were created as team characters. They benefit from being on a team for more than just the bonus that they get.Added in.
The great thing about VEATs is that they don't suffer from not having a team. Their inherent is miniscule at best (something like +0.01 max end and something small for health? Its damn hard to find numbers) but the same benefits that buff teams are self buffs to.
I do personally dislike the Kheld inherents, because they do absolutely nothing for you when you aren't teamed.
In the old days, it was assumed that by the time you unlocked the Kheldeans that you had a pretty good handle on the game. I think back in those days, that meant that you had learned other strategies other than rushing blindly into the next group every time.
In fact the Kheldeans were created with nemesis built in to teach you this if you had not learned it already.
I'm one to like to explore different kinds of character paths so I've made PBs and WSs that are single (human), dual (human, squid), and tri-form. I intend to stick with that with each character.
I think that the concept of the three form character was to allow players to augment what the team was lacking.
No blaster? Go squid.
No tank? Go dwarf.
I really don't see much of an End issue once you get squid form. I slot mine up with end mods and I can pretty much keep blasting all day. In fact, I often switch into squid form to regain end instead of using Rest.
I will add that I don't go out of my way to play a PB or WS. In general, I find playing the other archetypes more fun.
As I haven't unlocked the VETAs yet (I'm not really motivated to do so. My highest level villain was crippled by the OOS bug when the VETA Issue was released, and I couldn't play the character - which I had been playing regularly - at all for months (the character was literally stuck in place and couldn't move) and then with constant OOS issues for what turned into a full year.), I can't compare the two. My character slots are full at this point anyway so even if I ding that villain to 50 - I can't even say that I will make a VETA when I get a vet character slot next year. -
Quote:There have been sound updates just recently.... WoW also updates the graphics and sound. CoV did this, but that was years ago.....
Also, there have been graphics updates within the last year or so.
I don't know what kind of graphics updates are you are talking about in regards to WoW.
While the economy is bad and many of us don't have money to put into new computer equipment, maybe it isn't such a good time to invest money on pushing the graphics or sound envelope past the average players monetary ability to keep up?
There are probably a surprising number of CoH players have the graphic settings turned down - for one reason or another. I wouldn't doubt that some reviewers play CoH with the graphs settings set to below what their system can handle and they don't even know it. -
-
A level 1 character in CoH can walk faster than a level 15 can run in WoW, and you'll get yelled at if you run in a populated area.
So, yeah, in my opinion, WoW was dreadfully slow after playing CoH. So slow that it pretty much bored me to death.
The only thing fast about WoW was how fast my storage filled up so that I had to stop and sort/change-clothes again.
I take that back, it was also very fast at getting me to give up on playing it (even before my subscription was up) and getting back to the City.

Quote:They gave us a mission creator so that we could create far more content then they ever could..... They've done an equally poor job of adding sufficient new experience* based content. By that I mean, developer created new zones, story arcs, trials, and taskforces.
*In the sense of something you experience by playing through, not necessarily anything that gives you XP points.
There are plenty of really good mission arcs in the MA that are buried alive under the farming garbage that was being created for months.
Need more level 50 arcs?
Make them!
Want to fight different enemy groups?
Make them!
I know it can be done.
If you are to lazy to check out the "experience" of making your own missions, then at least "experience" some missions that other people have made.
I know that a good amount of the 300k mission arcs are/were farming missions, but there have to be at several thousand really good mission arcs.
Do a search with a key word for something that you would like to see in a mission.
I'm pretty sure you'll get multiple mission arcs to check out.
And, yeah, the DEVs did create the MA so they are part of the creation process that allows players to participate in the creation process.
...please don't tell me that you are a fan of the signature characters...argh... -

If this thread is any indication, they probably didn't get more than 1k entries. I'm guessing probably not even 250.
That's pretty sad if that is the case. It is such a great system. I guess the exploitation that went on for so long really took its toll.
Hopefully, after a year or two, the MA will be running at full-steam because players are able to find fun missions to run and have fun crafting their own. -
Heck. I'll take a swing at this.
Subscription Fees
Pay a subscription for an on-going game or pay for a game that has a limited life expectancy.
In CoH you not only play for the longevity of the game, but also for improvements to the game system. Some other games make you pay more for these "expansions"; you know those things we call "issues" that we get for free.
If you pay for a game that has no subscription fee, you may bet updates for bugs, but it is highly unlikely that you will get any additional content during the length of the game. Instead, get ready to pay for "Game-with-no-subscription-fee 2".
Agro
Are you kidding me?
What game doesn't have enemies attack you when they see you?
Is it some how not obvious that people that see you will attack you?
Of course, you are going to try to avoid them if you can.
Hide-and-go seek is all about Agro. If you aren't "it", you know what agro is like once "it" see you.
As far as agro and group dynamics go...
It makes obvious sense from a PC point of view to go after the most dangerous target first. Why go after the heavily armored Tank if you can take down the blaster quickly?
Strategically, there is no reason not to do so.
Obviously, when I'm battling the enemy I take down the most powerful attackers and the support units (buffers, debuffers, healers, etc.) first.
Why don't the enemies do this?
Obviously, this is a literary license that extends into the world of gaming.
It's about the "role" playing.
Some people just want to be a big hulking Tank, but the point of a Tank/Brick, etc. in a game is to defend the weaker team mates. And this is one reason that this kind of character is given more armor/resistance/survivability than the other character classes in a game.
By-and-large, outside of a Taunt, the character that does the most damage is the one that pulls the agro. We all know that characters that do AoE damage tend to draw a lot of agro. So really, it's just the matter of a Tank using Taunt that will really make the difference in drawing agro away form other characters (Gauntlet/punch-provoke is minor when compared to Taunt).
Wthout the Tank (and the related mechanics), the enemies would behave in a more "rational" manner. So I guess the solution to this agro issue (I don't think there is one) appears to be getting rid of Tanks and presence attacks. There is no reason to give Tanks extra armor if they aren't defending anyone; if they aren't defending the team then they are just highly-armor scrappers.
Button Lock
In most MMORPGs, you are going to have to wait for your powers to recharge. This is a mechanic in place so that all players are restricted to the same playing field even though they are playing on vastly different computer systems and internet connections.
Regardless of how fast your computer is, your powers recharge in the same amount of time as mine do if I have a slower connection.
This is a good thing for play balance. It is a negative for the rich and uber tech'd.
Just because you can mash a button faster or your auto-fire switch is triggering your attack every 10th of a second doesn't mean that your character really should be able to attack that quickly.
PC gamers are playing on all kinds of different computers and over connections of varying speeds. While playing the delay seems minimal in most cases, but there is delay from when you hit a button to when the power goes off in the game, to when the enemy (Pve or PvP) takes the damage from the attack.
I feel that the current recharging-time for powers is a good idea for play balance in order to allow for a larger player base.
Static Worlds
I once hear of a virtual world where the world was created to work like the real world. Resources grew and the players needed to use these resources in order to create what they needed in order to survive in the game. The world was quickly deforested and there was no new growth of trees since all the trees had been destroyed.
I hate to quote the Statesman, but - I think it was him - he said something like - if we made the City destructible, there probably wouldn't be anything standing after an hour or two.
There are two main problems with destructible environments; keeping track of what is destroyed and leaving an environment for players to game in.
Any of us that have played in the City over the years know that the City is not static, the world does change.
Each Issue bring with it changes to the world. But this is all DEV based change.
Player based change is more subtle. You may not think that you are having a lasting effect on game play by triggering Rikti invasions or a Zombie Apocalypse, but you are. You see, it has an effect on the most fluid part of the whole MMORPG - the players. When you bring a character into the game you are changing the world, you change who other players can interact with (you weren't there before you logged in, and neither were they). When you trigger an event to happen, you are causing something to happen that other players can participate in that wouldn't have happened otherwise. Of course, many characters will get xp from these events and having characters progress in levels definitely changes their impact up on the world.
The World may seem static, but that is because it is the rock that the ocean of players washes over. And if the DEVs are good enough, they are watching the trends of player behavior and are molding the advances in the World based on player behavior.
I'm not even going to go into markets and how fluid they are - but, there again, the players are making the majority of the change happen.
I'm not going to argue that some more mutable aspects to the environment would be cool (I don't see a huge rush to the villain side here in order to run mayhem missions, so maybe it isn't as a popular of an idea as some would think). It would make checking out another server a whole different experience as each one would be different based on the characters actions on each server. But then it already is like that to some extent because the volume and type of players on each server gives each their own flavor.
You can't play with the people you want to play with
Obviously, this is no longer a problem for the many in CoH.
For me, it was never much of a problem in the first place. The old sk'ing system is more than most games have. And, if someone really wanted to game with me, we could always bring in some new characters.
I certainly don't have a problem logging into the same server as my friends. I know that can be a problem on some other games.
In game with wide reaching levels and no sk'ing system, it is always really a matter or the higher level characters not wanting to "slum it" with the lower level characters, and there is always sense that it really isn't worth the effort to drag along lower level characters into higher-level adventures because they would be defeated too easily (even while making their way slowly at their low-level speed toward the mission). Or maybe, it was just a matter of it wasn't worth the hassle to figure out a way to play with "the people you want to play with"...or maybe they weren't really "the people you want to play with" or you weren't "the person they wanted to play with" in the first place.
CoH has solved the mechanics problem. Now it really is a matter of who you do or don't want to game with on whatever basis you choose.
