Quote:It's a matter of taste I guess....
Nearly every Guide gives the Sniper Attack a bad rap, and says it's only useful as a pulling tool. I don't find that to be the case.
...
Timing is the key, and knowing when your other attacks will set up for it.
....
So, why not use them?
When I get one, I slot it with a Recharge Redux. They have pretty good accuracy on their own. I usually end up slotting them with 3 damage, 1 activation-time redux, 1-2 recharge redux, and/or 0-1 Accs. (There is usually some way to buff up acc by yourself or thanks to your team at any rate.)
I use them during combat all the time, but I also use med pool powers during combat.
And, yeah, timing is everything.
Some people just don't have any time for timing.
Some people don't have time for strategy either.
Some people don't even have time for the rest of the team.
Go figure.
Pick your own powers. The guides were written by some one that likes to play that way. They are just guides at any rate.
Your character is your character. Play how you like to play. If other people have a problem with that, then it is their problem. I can assure you that there are other players that play this game the way that you do.
The hard part is finding them. -
Quote:... and pvp enhances ...Task forces, Ouroboros, badge collection, invention IO collection especially purple IOs which can only be slotted by level 50s...
Whatever you want to do really.
I forgot PvP.
...and don't forget you can make as many unique missions as you want in the Mission Architect.
There are a lot of good missions in there for level 50's buried in the garbage.
Also, you don't have to just run level 50 missions in the MA. There are lots of good lower level missions in there as well ... some of the ones that are flagged as DEVs Choice and Hall of Fame might even be worth playing ... and the Guest author ones might be worth a shot.
Seriously, there are hundreds of thousands of MA missions. I'm sure that there are at least a good 10k of them that are a hoot to play. From my point of view, many of them are not Guest Author, Hall of Fame, or DEV Choice missions. I've ran plenty of great MA missions that weren't 5 star-ed and didn't have even 50 plays. The gems are in there waiting to be found.
And that can take up a lot of time!
Helping out other supergroup members, fighting the Monsters on Monster Island or the Rikti Monkeys on Rikti Monkey Island (both in Peregrine). Heck, fighting giant monsters in general, they are all over the place!
I'm assuming you have already checked out the Shadow Shard (get someone around level 41 to pull the missions, you'll be exemplared down, but it will be a different experience if you haven't run that arc yet.) and Cromorea (or whatever it's called) ... heck, did you run the Striga, Croatoan, or Vanguard/Rikti War Zone stuff yet?
Mother Ship raids in the Rikti War Zone?
Hami Raids (do they even happen any more?)?
Run costume contests for the level-challenged in Atlas!?
Oh, heck...there is a lot to do, but I'm an alt-oholic. I play my 50's from time to time, but I have over 100 characters that are aren't level 50 yet that want to get some action?
How many slots did you have free?
What you haven't checked out how many servers yet?
Wow.
I made 22 characters the first week?!
Uh, yeah, ranting again..sorry...I think there is plenty of things to do at level 50, but it isn't the end of the game once you have hit 50 by any stretch of the definition.
This really isn't an "end game" kind of game. It's an "enjoy the journey" kind of game. I find it to be an "enjoy being a super hero with your friends" game as well. -
Can someone refresh my memory again about why we aren't taking the battle to the Rikti Homeworld?
Yeah, I know the garbage that the Freedom Phalanx has spewed in regards to this, but how many times are we going to let them attack the City before we put at stop to it at the source?
Let's make it clear that we are ready to take the battle to their Homeworld and see how much they like seeing their civilians attacked! -
Quote:...
Functionality of bases updated. I know that ties into the PVP, CoP, base-raid mess, but this would help... A LOT for builders' community.
End-game Content (outside of TFs). Other than the Rikti/Hami raids, there really isn't a LOT. More is promised, so... this might already be covered.
Signature Powers
I'm always for some good base updates. Parts, ease of stacking/layering, ability to set storage priv's from a central terminal (charge prestige for the unit, it is well worth running around all over the base).
I'm not for requiring sg's to participate in base raids. At the same time, if two sg's want to fight in their bases and destroy their gear - let them.
I'm against CoP bases. I'm sure there will be some kind of hybrid base in GR. I hope Co-op bases only function in the GR zones and they are separate groups - GRg for lack of a better term.
End game content? We have a tool. People have used it to make good level 50 missions. If there isn't enough level 50 content, make some more. (And there is A LOT of good content in there buried in the garbage.)
Signature powers? I have a feeling that this would be very load intensive. We already have customizable powers. I would rather see more customization then some special individual power that will drive dial-up users from the game.
{yeah, there are still dial up users that play the game. They do not all come to the forums. Many of them have been playing since game release. The information transfer load with the customizable powers is causing dc'd with some of them. Let's not drive players from the game for the sake of improvement.}
Advertising/Marketting - This is needed. Last time I went to Game Stop there was no CoH product on the shelf. The closest thing was Champions Online (with a tag-line by the creators of City of Heroes - Bold move on their part and great for them since there is no CoH next to it on the shelf!)
We dreadfully need advertising and product fronting in game stores.
WoW was on the shelf. CoH should be on the shelf.
Next time I guess I need to ask if they even have game cards (months) for sale.
I guess it will be on the shelf soon with CoH:GR and maybe there will be a media blitz then.
Store-sale-only booster packs may very well be a good way to gain exposure. I know that this decreases direct dollars to the DEVs, but it means media and store front exposure.
There have been many threads about this basic concept so I probably should say use your search-fu, but I'm posting anyway so ... -
Quote:Maybe if you are that burned out and can't try to post comments on ways to improve PvP or increase the population of PvP'rs in the game, this isn't the thread for you.Lol gimme a break. There are jerks in every sphere of this game. The reason that jerks drive people away from pvp is that the people so affected don't like pvp
.....
Mine is one of general fatigue from dealing with both types of people.
I see neither in your recent posts.
Your posts seem to be trying to prove that the reasons others find to avoid PvP are not valid.
The fact that people are posting those positions here shows that they are quite valid regardless of how you feel about the issue. -
Quote:First off, I want to make it clear. I'm not anti-PvP.The majority of the die-hard anti-pvp people I've encountered base their sentiment on a couple negative encounters, often in cases that are ambiguous at best from the perspective of pvpers (eg. he killed me while I was badging, even though I told him I was there to get a badge!). I've run across many people that swore off pvp after ONE incident where they were taunted in a pvp zone (eg. "haha die nub!").
...
If I reacted the same way to pve as many do to social interations in pvp, I would've bailed on this game after 3 months. You hear the jerk pvper explanation so much because it's an easy explanation for people who are disinclined to pvp period.
People in these forums that have run into me when I'm in an anti-something mode have a pretty clear idea when I'm anti-something and my rep rep takes a pretty massive hit from my stands.
I don't even think that the people that don't want to PvP are anti-PvP - they just don't want to PvP.
There is a difference between not wanting or liking to do something and being against it (aka anti-).
We are talking about percentages here.
There are a higher percentage of "people who behave badly" in PvP than there are in PvE.
I have never heard of situations in PvE where a player is repetitively kicked off a team and called a noob* because their stats weren't as high as another player on the team.
I have never heard of a situation were a player was intentionally repeatedly left to die by the other players on a team and then mocked for being a noob.
I certainly haven't been in PvE situations where teammates were constantly mocking the other team members.
I don't run into "people who behave badly" on most of the teams that I play with - and I PuG about 98% of the time.
When I'm in PvP zones, I'm not trying to pick a fight. I'm usually actively avoiding the other players. When encounters occur, it seems that 50% of the time the opponent feels the need to be insulting and/or has an insulting or non-genre name. ( I'm sorry. I don't play City of Heroes to fight "I PWNZ U", "U R NOOB", "do not attack", .I.", or Ihavelettersthatlooklikeotherssoallmyfriendsnamesl ookthesameasmine). I'm sorry, but I'm not going to PvP with you if you aren't at least trying to stay in the genre.
I don't complain about people attacking me while I'm badging in a PvP zone. At the same time, I don't expect to be aggressively mocked if I don't want to battle someone that has the ability to defeat me if I don't work actively to avoid them.
That is to say, if someone gets the drop on me. I'm not just going to let them kill me.
If I get into a conflict and it doesn't look like I have a chance of taking down my opponent, I'm not just going to let them kill me.
If someone feels that it's okay to mock me while I'm trying to have fun, I'm not going to game with them.
It's pretty much that simple.
Now if I had a chance to go join a Mayhem/safeguard mission in progress and actively work for one side or the other - I'd probably at least check it out.
I definitely think that the mission holder should be the one to have the ability to toggle on/off the PvP setting.
I definitely think that you should get a warning as to the mission level and settings when you are clicking to enter an active PvP mayhem/safeguard.
I also think that that only the other side should have the option of entering an active mission of this type and that the number of the opposing side should not exceed that of the side currently in the mission.
I'm assuming it would have to include some kind of public alert system on an event channel or only be accessible through the arena (with pre-set sides).
Is this do-able, I don't know. However, I don't feel that any of the PvP zones have much of a comicbook feel to them. The kinds of things that go on in PvP zones tend to be standard "war game" PvP conventions. This isn't a "war game", it's a "comic book game".
I'm not saying to overwhelmingly go with the Comic Book Code, but comic book-type super vs super action.
I generally have found that there is less time for the bad behavior in a PvP timer-environment where players have the option of leaving the mission with the click of a button.
[*- I'm using noob as a general catch all insult of any type.] -
Quote:This is very much the case.Or you could just, you know, not buy an uber-expensive IO you don't want to save the Inf for.
I've said before that there tends to be a little too much of the Pokemon attitude toward rare and ultra-rare items in game.
You don't have to have them all in order to play the game.
It might be nice if you had them, but the OP should realize that these rares and ultra-rares were intentionally put into the game so that they would be intentionally hard and time-consuming to get, right?
The easiest way to avoid worrying about "Gotta Catch Them ALL!" (tm) is to make alts, so that you don't have to well on making your high-level character as uber as possible - and spend your time enjoying playing the game.
No one must have these rare and ultra-rare items NOW in order to play the game. They are not required.
The players that have to have those items NOW - regardless of price - are the ones that keep the value of these items as high as they are ... and those that work the markets to make a profit are only able to do so because someone is willing to buy the items for the prices that they are selling them for.
The OP is, in fact, helping to keep the prices high by buying items at that price - therefore, they are to blame for the issue they have problem with.
The quote above pretty much covers it. -
Quote:CoV wasn't just releasing Villains either. If you wanted an SG (hero) base you had to buy CoV.Like I said, the game's numbers are off by around 10%, which I'd consider statistically significant. However, it's impossible to say yet how many of those people are just trying out something novel and will return. After all, look at the HUGE spike in Q4 2005, which City of Villains are released, followed by the more-or-less return to normalcy.
I think there was great anticipation for PvP too.
I love this game. I don't think it is going anywhere. I also don't think that the server population is being directly affected by sales numbers either.
It seems that there are are good number of players that have multiple MMORPG subscriptions going.
I do think that we are looking at a daily server population decrease - even taking the character migration into account - and I do think that there has been some character moving going on due to the free character moves.
I think that one thing that players need to keep in mind is that shutting other players out from teams since they aren't in our sg/vgs or aren't using certain channels to get teams is detrimental to the longevity of the game.
It isn't just rival sg/vgs or players that won't conform that are being "left out". New players aren't in sg/vgs and don't know about "secret" global channels.
It is unfortunate but many people don't know to use /hc to chat on the [Help] channel and that is one of the few channels that a Trial account can use.
So if you are worried about CoH and want to make sure the game survives, then help out those new players ... if you can.
Really what makes CoH different from so many other MMORPGs seems to be how helpful many of us are here. -
Quote:Which means keep the MRP and ERP out of channels and areas where people that are playing this game that aren't even teenagers can see ... and there are some young children playing this game. What are all these acronyms? I don't know em', but keep it Teen rated. That is how this game is rated and governed.
Remember other people can can see word balloons if there are word balloons regardless if they are monitoring that channel or not.
How are people going to mock a MRP'r/ERP'r if they don't know you are MRP'ing or ERP'ing?
Is this PvRP or RPvRP?
How does anyone know that the character that they are MRP'ing or ERP'ing is of legal age for that kind of behavior on-line?
Sounds like a can of worms was just opened. -
Well, it looks like you are missing the old "main" starting arcs - all 5 of them (they are origin related).
Have you fought the Clockwork King? (not the Psychic Clockwork King)
Have you defeated Dr Vazhlok (after being affected by the Vazh Plague)?
Have you put a stop of the running of Supradyne?
Have you been sent on missions to get really, seriously lost in the forests of Perez Park?
etc?
Yeah, there are some really cool missions that you may have missed.
Unfortunately, they do require a lot of running around from contact to contact and plenty of Defeat # X.
There are unique maps that you will won't see in the rest of the normal game if you don't run these lower level missions (I think most are available as maps in the MA). -
Have you shut your computer completely down since this issue started?
Are you running the same virus checker that you were using before?
Is the firewall blocking any processes or parents associated with CoH or the Coh Updater? -
I tend to pick the axe now.
Sands of Mu uses far more end than the Ghost Slaying Axe. There is animation time on the draw, but it swings instantly. Sands of Mu doesn't have the start up animation, but the animation takes a while to go off.
The Ghost Slaying Axe (in addition to the other enemies already listed) does extra damage to Zombie Apocalypse Zombies.
And here is another interesting effect - if you use the Axe on ghosts it makes all the ghosts in the group come after you! They know the threat when they see it. Or at least that is the way that it seems.
If you are going to be fighting undead, take the Axe.
If you have end to burn, then take the Sands of Mu. -
I haven't PvP'd for a good while - I guess since before i16 hit.
I have been in PvP zones, but I haven't combated another player in the zones that I was in.
I have done some PvP'ing in PvP zones.
I have done some Pvp'ing in the Arena, but that was over a year back at least.
I have done some Gladiator PvP in the Arena, and that can be a truly balanced if players take in the same team of gladiators. I have never heard of anyone setting up any kind of PvP contest with "same build" Gladiator teams.
Quote:There you go.But PvP is different. Before and after the changes, PVP is a completely different game, where your powers do different things, and balance is incomprehensible. You have to go out of your way, radically alter your playstyle and mindset, and make a lot of effort to PVP in this game, and most players don't want to bother. Not to mention, even if they make a good build, they can be beaten by a richer player with the fancy gear anyway. For all I know it's the funnest thing ever, but I just can't get my head around the effort.
It is a complete lack of balance across the archetypes.
From a team standpoint, the mechanism changes completely between PvE and PvP.
A team in PvE can enter combat in a way that squishes are fairly safe from attack.
A team in PvP always targets the squishes first.
That is pretty much why PvP is broken. Of course, you are going to take out the weakest enemies first. Why not? Some of us do it when we fight PvE. The melee archetypes simply aren't built to protect the squishies in PvP situations.
Quote:I can't really consider myself a carebear; I just don't enjoy the PVP in this game, even though I love the rest. Maybe in a different game, I'd be happily ganking away. What are we missing?
I certainly hope this is not a goal that you would strive for. It certainly isn't any fun for the gankee and is seen in harassment in some MMORPGs.
Ganking people is certainly not a way to get people interested in PvPing. As I have said, it is no fun to get ganked. There is no reason to return to get ganked in PvP in CoH - unless you are trying to help someone else get PvP enhances...great fun, eh?
The rest of the game is much more fun so why PvP? - especially if other PvP'rs goals are to "gank away".
And calling someone a "carebear" is an intentional insult to try to harass another player into a PvP situation where they are probably under-skilled, under-powered, and likely to get ganked!
Honestly, players can PvP without insulting each other.
That would be one of the key things "to make PvP" work better - after balance, of course.
Unfortunately, I have run into this kind of juvenile behavior far too much in a PvP zone.
So for now, "same team" Gladiator matches seem to be the way to go for those that want a fair fight.
I have the feeling that many hardcore PvP'rs really don't want a fair fight in the first place. -
Quote:If you are going to buy only one, I think you already bought the right one.I decided to buy one of the booster packs but now deciding which one.
...
I started with the GvE pack so I have Pocket D Pass, and Jet Booster.
I would go for the Sci Pack next. If you want puny man turn into smashing giant - you have no other option.
It only takes a trip to the Shadow Shard or Grandville and 10k to get a Raptor pack - even at level 1, so that's a travel power before level 14 that you don't have to buy a booster pack for.
Actually, you can just go to the Shadow Shard or Grandville and park there and you will gain travel time on a Traveller's Pack (same as the Raptor pack but can only hold 30 minute charge), but I'm sure that someone would be able to fork over 10k for the raptor pack, they might even be willing to help you get to the dealer (which shouldn't be a problem if you have the GvE Jump Jet anyway...). -
Quote:That would be Speed Boost aka SB. If you get hit with it once, just ask not to be speed boosted. As you know, they will listen or they won't..... however the one thing that annoys me the most is.... (well, i'm not sure of the technical term) ... but when another member of the team makes me super fast so that just tapping the "w" key sends me across a giant room making it completely impossible to navigate.
Quote:... mayhem mission ...
Hero "bank" missions are called "safeguard" missions.
Quote:... When I do this in a team everyone rushes in, defeats the guards and rushes to the vault. However, when I'm alone I pull the group in the first room to the door and I position myself there. 1) The boss in the vault has to go out the front door 2) the 15 minute timer does not start until I've defeated the boss. I simply need to wait a moment till he/she comes to me and keep him/her from leaving. 3) I also like looking for those side missions which most teams do not do, at least not in my experience. I even stayed behind once to do them on my own and got begged by the leader to please exit because they wanted to rush to the next mish.
Yeah, I think we have already seen in the thread that there are people that do both. There are going to be more people tending to do what you don't like on a certain server ... I'll say it - Freedom.
Virtue is the next most populated server, but it is the unoffical RPG server, so you may find teams there that are more to your liking, but since it is still highly populated there may still be many teams that are "runamuck".
After those two, you are going to find a different experience - on any of the others. You will still run into the berserker - "I see only red" teams, but they won't be as many....
....especially if you follow this next bit...
I think stated it before, but about the only way that you have control over a team is to be the leader - so run your own teams - and NEVER give up the star for any reason.
If you were leader, then you could say for the sides!
If the players are out of control then warn them that you are trying to run a tactical team. I try to give everyone a chance and the general 3 strikes rule. If you don't like their behavior and "as team leader" you have warned them, then they will have already quit or you are clearly "leader" and should have no bad feelings about kicking them from YOUR team.
Quote:Here's a question: How do I state, politely, in my search comment, that I am not looking for this type of team?
If you get an "blind" invite - aka they don't send a tell first - then you know they didn't read your search comment. Don't accept the invite.
If you get a tell to join a team and they don't state the mission level, they probably didn't read your search comment. Don't accept the invite. Send a tell and ask if they read your search comment.
If you get a tell with a mission level, they probably a higher caliber of players and will tend not to "just charge in". I'd at least join that team to see what's up.
If you get a tell with a mission level and request that you send a tell in order to get invited to the team - that's even better.
Quote:How do I tell the team, politely, that I'm leaving because I do not like the way they go about things? I've tried and generally what I get is a lot of hate from the team leader and other members about how wrong I am for leaving.
"Sorry, guys. I have to go." should be enough.
Make it short and sweet and don't tell them why.
Isn't their play behavior kind of unthinking and bull-headed?
What kind of response would you expect out of a player that "only sees red" if you tell them that you don't like their play-style?
Check my rep!
I tangle with those guys in the forums all the time.
Get ready to build up some iron-skin!
They don't really care why you don't like what they are doing; they just want to bully you into accepting it. Just walk way slowly and quietly.
Sometimes its best to just flat out quit.
And here's a secret. If they are going to give you a hard time, type /gignore charactername. You won't have to hear from them again.
Brutal? maybe, but you don't want to hear that guff anyway and this will keep them from inviting you to another of those teams that you don't like being on anyway.
So it's a good thing.
Quote:This last part is the biggest sticking point, If the game is full of hateful people that can't take a simple "Your style of play is not my cup of tea" then I do not see much future in my staying. From my 2 months of experience this seems the norm rather than the exception. Have I simply been unlucky?
And, as others have asked, and I will state again - Your play experience will be greatly affected by the server that you are on.
Try playing on another server. And I suggest trying a server that isn't the one you are on and isn't Freedom or Virtue.
The server at the top of the log in screen is the one you were on last.
The next one is the least populated and population increases as you go down the list.
Freedom and Virtue are the most populated.
Infinity and Justice have been floating at 3 and 4 and there tend to be tactical teams on those servers or, at least, they tend to wait until the team is ready before charging in.
The other servers are less populated or have erratic server populations depending on the time of day - that is to say they switch positions. Liberty and Champion tend to stay in the middle somewhere. I don't think I've ever seen Guardian or Victory in the lowest population spot.
The game really isn't "full" of hateful people. From what limited experience I have, the core CoH community is far more helpful than many MMORPGs.
If you are running into a large percentage of hateful people, I'd say that you were on Freedom. I don't want to say that, but it really seems to be the case. This really seems to be due to the AE exploitation that happened when the AE was first released. The players that joined to exploit the AE wanted to be able to find teams easily so they went to the busiest server at the time - which was Freedom - some also spilled over into Virtue because it was a high population server.
Use the [Help] channel by using /hc [message]
You'll find some helpful people there on almost any server. They might even have some room on their teams.
I'm not going to say that sometimes jerks don't harass people on the [Help] channel, but then they are jerks, so there you go.
Quote:I really enjoy teams, when those in the team are not simply looking to rush through it just to get the XP and move on. What I've taken to doing is to say, "I have time for one mish and then I have to log", then I see how it goes, if it's good I then say, "well, maybe just one more". If if goes badly (which is more then 75% of the time), then I leave, go to a day job location and log off for a while. And still, I get hateful comments about how inconsiderate it is to leave the team or that I'm just a freeloader, even after telling them up front that I'll only do one and see how it goes.
I would put any players that harass you on global ignore by typing /gignore charactername
You don't have to listen to them again if you do, and really don't want to, do you?
It sounds like it is time to switch servers.
Which server are you on, btw? -
I love this game too. It is so cool in so many ways that there is no place for me to start when it comes to how cool it is.
Unless I start talking about the player base. I'm not talking about the people that come here to play a game. I'm talking about the community of super powered beings that really make the City and Isle a cool place to hang out and a great place to team.
Sure there are some of those people running around that are obnoxious or just trying to cause trouble in general - those tend to be people trying to beat the game. I feel sorry for those people because they can't understand what makes the game really cool.
However, that can not thwart the over-all friendly, helpful feeling I get from other players playing characters in this game because they love the genre. And maybe it is the genre that brings out the kind of players that are naturally friendly and helpful.
In any case, I'm glad for the great game, but what has kept me here is all the great players in the game that take time to be friendly and helpful with other players. -
It sure would make a cool entrance/exit-point for the Pocket D!
Well, we already do have some "vehicles". The Raptor Pack, Jump Pack, and various other packs are all vehicles.
Also some of us run around in Power Armor, so that would be a vehicle as well.
Quote:Ah yes, one of the EXACT arguments against our ever having a Walk power. It's not worth the effort for what is basically an RP tool.
Don't get me wrong; I'm all for RP tools. But don't you think it would be a better RP tool and take less time to program if a character could walk up to a chair and click on it to sit down - rather than stand on top of it, hit an emote, and hope your legs aren't hanging inside the chair or your butt isn't floating in the air once the emote has completed?
And I think that is pretty much what they would have to do; aka make a City Of Heroes :: Super Vehicles. But I think that what happened with Auto Assault should be a good lesson on that one. -
Quote:Thanks for the suggestions.Sounds as if you're not receiving data that you need on the new character in a timely fashion.
From my discussions, everyone has problems with data being sent in a timely fashion from the auction house when the initial connection occurs from all the conversations I've had with other players.
My connection is not going to cause the previous characters posts on the market to show up when the next character goes to the market.
It's a matter of the wrong data being sent from the auction servers or relying on auction posting information that is stored on my computer in some temp file before confirming it's accuracy with what the auction computers are showing.
This has been on going since the market was released.
I brought this up as it may be part of the issue that is causing the client crash when moving enhancements around.
The enhancement movement problem wasn't happening before the major update for i16 or the next large one after that.
We can try to lay blame on the enhancement movement issues on my connection speed, but I had the same connection before the changes were made when that update occurred that apparently has caused the issue. -
Quote:You can use the leash to control that.Or run up out of my buff radius to use Brawl when they have three ranged attacks!
When they start to run, call them back. Let them run back a bit and then sic'em again. They do their ranged attacks and start to rush in again. Repeat.
Works for me. -
I've been having problems with client crashes while moving around enhancements to/from base enhancement storage and my enhancement tray and to/from the ww/bm market window to my enhancement tray.
I tend to keep my enhancement in some kind of orderly fashion in my enhancement tray, so as I'm moving stuff I'm often repositioning them into an order that seems to make sense to me - at least at the time.
This isn't constantly happening, but it seems to be increasing.
No lie - I jump characters like crazy! And that very well have something to do with it.
I haven't even traded much on the dark side...I mean villain side... much lately. I'm pretty sure it was the second character I logged in last night - first on the villain side - went to the BM - Triumph - Cap Au Diable - and client crashed while interfacing with the BM. I had moved enhancements to and from and was rearranging my tray when the lock up happened. At least I think it happened first there. I started listing my global handle on the client crash reports so I can be contacted about this.
I think it started when power customization came out or around that time. It has been increasing, but with all the character logging I have been doing for the Winter Event badges it may be related to all the various characters interfacing with Wentworths.
As it should be clearly known by now, if you access WW with one character, log out, log in with another character, and access WW - the first characters listings will appear in WW window - when it finally opens.
I usually flush that by dropping something onto the WW window which causes it to change to character 2's WW postings.
I understand that this may be an issue with me trying to move enhancements around in my tray too quickly while it is still trying to sync with WW or base storage, but there is no indicator to show me when the two are in-sync and ready for me to continue.
Possibly a ready-light of some sort?
Standard Red for Processing/don't do anything, Yellow for Try me if you dare, and Green for system is ready for you to proceed?
The man behind the scenes pulling the strings is good for immersion, but client crashes ruins the mood much quicker than being reminded that even virtual stocking takes time. -
Quote:I'm interested in the wording there on that quote - "...representing them..."Quote:
There are now an estimated 10 million online gamers across the globe. Each one has an online identity, a personally created character representing them in their virtual world.
It isn't written "...that looks like them..." or "...acts like them..."
It seems to say that when a player plays in a virtual world they select their own avatar. Even a randomly generated outfit has to be picked by the player before they enter the game.
I understand that they are trying to find something behind the way that players pick certain characters to play;
- Does the bully always play a Tank?
- Does the little kid that feels powerless always play a Tank?
- What does it say about players that want to play characters of the composite sex, aliens, robots, plants, etc?
They might even be trying to trace behavioral differences in-game versus out of game.
The obvious is comparing physical similarities or formulated reoccurring differences between player and avatar.
At any rate, if people want to run around the streets of Paragon City and aren't worried about being caught on the PCTV news then good for them!
I'm going to keep my mask on!I'm in character - well, RP-casual at least!

Quote:The grayed names could be more beneficial if they also indicated team leader status (which others have posted), the current level of that character (aka the current SSK'd mission level), and team size (which could include looking for more, not looking for more, and full status).Yes, seems like it should be what it should be defaulted to NOT show.
Or at least, when the /search finds that it must drop names off to truncate, drop teamed folks off first, especially non-leaders.
These things could help in trying to join a team that is already active. I don't make a habit of doing this, but I have sent a tell to a grayed out name asking if they had any more room on their team.
I really want the Add Note stars to show up in the team search window. -
Quote:Well, let's see....My question to the community is... How does your alter ego look? The person behind the smoke and the mirrors in the land of Oz? Is there a big, bad gargoyle behind the wizard, or just someone humble who loves life and loves to laugh? Do you think you'd make a good place in that article?
We are playing a game about the superhero genre.
As far as I recall, in that genre people put on masks when they fight wrong doing because if their faces were revealed it would would mean that bad things would occur to them during the time that they were not wearing a mask including the possible injury, maiming, or death of their families, close friends, co-workers, or innocent by-standers.
Of course, some want us to pull off the mask.
I have to say this - the mask is there for a reason. -
Quote:First off, I'm not an EU player, but I think some of what is being discussed could affect the North American servers if they were implemented. It is for that reason that I'm commenting on this thread..Finding the solution for eu pvperās problem must not be so diffucullt for them i think???
Mainly I've seen two main points in this thread.
PvP'r numbers on the EU server are low.
Player numbers on the EU servers in general are low.
PvP numbers are low
PvP has never been big in CoH. It wasn't part of the original game. It was added to the systems since some players wanted to PvP.
Apparently that wasn't a very large number of players. There wasn't much PvP going on when the Arena was released. There was a slight increase when the zones were released.
Mission XP in PvP zones was increased to try to lure other players into the PvP zones; this brought some players into the zones for the PvP'r to pounce upon if they had the chance, as most of these player that came for the increased mission xp were there for that reason and not for PvP'ing. As you can figure out, these players that went there just to just run missions get annoyed when they get jumped.
New players have a hard time keeping up with a veteran PvP player even if they had the same gear (enhancements, temp power, etc). The archetypes are incredibly unbalanced in PvP, so some archetypes really do best to avoid PvP.
It isn't fun to lose all the time, so anyone that encounters a situation in PvP where they are beaten down (aka slaughtered vs being defeated) repeatedly - especially by the same PvP opponent or if they are mocked when they are defeated may very well leave the PvP zones never to return ... with any character.
Player numbers on the EU servers in general are low
I'm sorry to hear that the numbers are dwindling. I think that the DEVs were trying to give you the option to consolidate yourselves with the Winter Event server transfer feature. If you can decide as a group which server it is that you want to be on and then the majority of the players migrate to the same server then a server-less or server merger really shouldn't be a point any longer.
With this method, those that want to stay on a less populated server can feel free to do so. The merger plan forces players to move to another server. If the population on one server gets so small that it isn't worth running, I'm sure that the characters there would be "force moved"/merged into the other server before they shutdown that server. So merger is really a last choice sort of situation as far as I'm concerned.
Now merging of server lists! Oh, yeah. I'm all for that. I would love to be able to play on the European servers in addition to the NA servers. That would give me more character slots - hopefully, if this was done - a language option would be in the options menu. Communications don't have be absolute in this game as long as players have their own interface in a language that they can understand (or figure out enough of); I've played on mission teams with people that didn't speak any English and things went along great. Most of the time when I'm on a team of players that speak the same language - many of them are not chatting and the team is just rolling along.
I have the feeling that there are some kinds of legal goings-on that are preventing the mergers of the NA and European servers. It would definitely be good for the game. It would have a drastic effect on the game economy for a short period of time if the WWs were linked. Players would tend to migrate towards servers that they had better connections, so I have the feeling that the EU players that were looking for more PvP would be looking at PvP'ing on NA servers versus NA players moving their characters to EU servers.
Ways to increase PvP'r numbers
For the purpose of this thread - the end result that seems to be the target is really increasing the number of PvP players as opponents.
It is assumed that by increasing the number of players on a server that PvP numbers will increase. This is true but it is by percentage. So it may be for every 100 players that come from another server that only one is a PvP'r - I have the feeling that the percentages are a lot lower than that.
It is assumed that PvP would run smoothly and fairly by an EU player playing on a NA server versus an NA Player - or vice versa. Lag means death in PvP even more quickly than it does in PvE. Is it just that Lag isn't seen to be an issue?
The biggest PvP community on the NA side tended to have events on the Test server - so all the players that wanted to be in the PvP events would copy the current version of their characters to the test server and hash it out there. The problem with that occurs when the server is shutdown for testing (really it's primary use, right?). But this still may be an option - if EU has access to a test server, which I'm assuming they do, but I don't know for sure. These events were on test were all Arena events as far as I know.
PvP contests would be a good way to try to get PvP'rs in the same place at the same time. Use the forums to set up events and send the events into the Niviene so that they will be posted on the calendar.
The biggest PvP turn out on the NA servers was when a DEV or two showed up in a PvP zone to give out yellow names. When that happened, there are are tons of people in whatever PvP zone the DEVs are in. One of my friends saw the event was going on and called me over from another server. Of course, by the next day the zone was back to it's normal virtually empty self.
Then, of course, there are issues of being polite - well really the issue is with some PvP'rs being very rude. When the whole rest of the game allows you to play in an environment that is fairly friendly and helping one other, the PvP zones tend to be the exact opposite.
The flip-side of the coin
Recently, the most populated I've seen a PvP zone was when a group of multi-boxers/multi-account holders were parked on top of the entrance way into a PvP zone (Bloody Bay) I think, and blasting away at their own helpless alts in order to gain PvP recipes. They had no problem attacking the heroes that zoned in or tried to exit the zone. If you didn't know what was going on and zoned in as a hero, wouldn't you start attacking the villains? Most everyone was AFK and one villain seemed to be targeting for all the other villains. So they would only need to turn on you and you were down. Can't blame someone for attacking if they don't know someone is there exploiting the zone's architecture for their own gain. Well this made it to the forums, but this only lured players into zoning in and trying to help, which was only helping the exploiters as now they have "fresh" kills.
It wasn't really about PvP. It was about exploitation of the PvP zones.
Unfortunately, this was the greatest number of PvP players that I had run into a zone in a long time. It was just a couple of people running multiple characters - some seemed to have 3 or more accounts.
It wasn't fun for anyone but them. The new PvP'r that stumbled into that may never go back into a PvP zone. Since they weren't even letting heroes leave the zone (they were sitting on the zone in/out point doing all this), some players couldn't get their heroes out of the zone before they were killed and sent to the hospital. I would have to say, that that experience may have been so frustrating for a few that they never returned to the game - let alone PvP.
I don't know what the PvP attitude is like on the EU servers. I can certainly hope that they are less rude than some of the PvP'rs that I have run into on the NA servers. With so few active PvP'rs, it doesn't take many rotten apples to spoil the bunch. That is to say, that if a potential PvP player only gets to taste bitter when they PvP, they won't gain a taste for it and have no reason to return.
After all, the game was created to be a PvE game, and PvP was just added as an afterthought.
[EDIT :: I ran a mission a PvP zone just a couple of days ago. There was no villain in the zone.] -
Quote:Make sure to include the server, side, and global handle of the players account. It will make it easier for them to track down the character in question.send an in game petition with all the details and they will investigate and take any necessary action. you will recieve a generic email notifying you they have recieved your petition and will look into it etc and that they cant divulge the results to you. So unless you see the person getting genericed you may never know the actual results but I would guess that a name like that would definately get hit by the generic stick
In addtion, I would like to point out ...
Just because you see a high level character with a crude name doesn't mean that their name won't be genericized. It just means that they probably haven't been reported yet.
If you play the game with the names over players heads turned off, you really don't know the name of the other players that are running around until you are on a team with them or see their name in the search window.
My guess is that most people that have crude name on higher level characters are working to hide the fact that the character has that name from the majority of players. Otherwise, responsible players would have reported them at a lower level.
