I'm not sure you understand what item they are talking about.
A fairly recent addition to the Paragon Market was the 50% XP Booster Temporary Power and it was available in 3 versions (1 hour, 4 hour and 8 hour).
The 8 hour version gives you +50% XP for 8 hours for 960 PP (120 PP/hour). It also gives you a temporary power that you can share with another player so that you can "give" someone a slice of the +50% XP for 8 hours pie.
If two people buy these, they could then each have the active one they bought plus grant (trade) the sharable version with each other.
Not trade as in Trading in the AH or in the Trade window, just an agreement that "we both buy them, I'll give you my sharable portion and you give me yours" type of trade.
These were on sale over the Memorial Day weekend for 25% off. -
Quote:I'm fairly sure that is EXACTLY what was being said.Heh. I thought he was saying his brute wasn't very bright. My bad.
However, that name is still available on all of the (formerly) English speaking servers except Freedom and Protector.
I suspect someone may have been testing that name on Protector when I checked but I can't be sure. -
I bought a cheap (under $20) SATA/IDE to USB Adapter a few years ago. I can connect any IDE laptop or desktop HDD or a SATA HDD to the adapter and then connect it to my computer using a USB cable. It's not an enclosure, just the bare drive lying on the desk with the cables connected to it.
I use it regularly when I run across a system so full of malware or viruses that I can't get any removal tools to run correctly. I can slave it to my main computer and run removal tools on it, then put it back in the computer it came from and run them again from there. I also use it to recover files from the drive in a computer that won't boot so I can put them on a disc for the person that owns the computer. I think I saw four or five of them laying on the workbench at the Technology Office when I was there Monday.
I haven't found a drive it won't work with yet. -
Quote:There's nothing creative about using a name like "Florid Uvula" for a fire blaster. It's just word salad. And just why would my born-in-America, only-speaks-English, thick-as-a-brick Brute have a name like "Douleur brutale"? It's a kludge at best.
Just as an FYI, I checked all but Vigilance and Zukunft.
Thick As A Brick was available on all servers except for Freedom and Protector. -

I think this may be why one of the things Zwisareallyniceguylettingmemakefunofhisname is trying to get done is to upgrade the version of vBulletin that we are using.

Quote:I was rather surprised to get Texas Tech for a robotics MM about a year after CoV came out.
It's not being any more creative to get Texas Noun when someone else can't get The Inquantumite.
It's not always Texas Noun either.
Eyes of Texas
Yellow Rose of Texas (also created about a year after CoV came out)
Sometimes it is Texas Noun.
I've tried creating characters on a different server to try to play with some friends. I tried using 3 of my established characters names and all were taken. I was still able to come up with a name I liked that fit the character without much trouble. Then most of them quit playing so he sits there abandoned. -
Quote:
The thing is, I like four-color superhero names. And there's a limited pool of them to go around. (Don't believe me? Try making someone with a fire themed name that sounds even vaguely superheroish. Good luck!)Quote:My "shortcomings" include a vivid imagination where the character virtually writes itself. Thus, having a character concept in mind, going to make said character, and finding out that because the game is eight years old and therefore the name is taken, that I can't name the character is something of a wet blanket on the entire process.
A name is important. If The Flash had been named "Runs Really Fast Man", or if Cyclops had been named "Laser Eyes Man", who here would take them seriously? A superhero name is more than what other people call you... it's insight into the character. Thing, Superman, Juggernaut. All three have immense strength, but all three are utterly different characters. The Thing is unsophisticated, Superman is more than just a pile of muscle, and the Juggernaut is unstoppable.
A name is part of the core character concept. Change the name, change the concept.
How long have superheroes been around in the four-color comics? Since 1938 or so?
Someone today comes up with a concept for a new character and it practically wrote itself. They go to pitch the character (and perhaps a series with it) to a comic publisher and the exchange goes something like this:
P(ublisher): What's the character's name?
W(riter): Superman
P: Already in use.
W: (thinks quickly) Ultra-man
P: In use
W: (thinks a bit longer) Miracle Man
P: In use
W: (thinks for quite a while) Hyperion?
P: In use
W: Prime
P: ... Well Gerard, I think we can make this work. You and Len work up a few issues and I'll put you in touch with Norm Breyfogle. I think his art style will fit really well on this.
Sure, Gerard Jones likely didn't start out wanting to call his character any of those names, but he still found a way to find a unique name that fit a character concept he wanted to make over 50 years after superheroes first started appearing in four-color comics.
But the age of the system and how many names were already in use didn't stop him from coming up with a unique name for his character.
But let's look at it from a slightly different viewpoint.
What if he'd come up with the name before or even with the initial concept and gone to pitch it to that publisher. The publisher liked the concept and the name but then before they got started on the process another comic publisher came out with a character with that very same name. They'd likely go back and try to come up with another name that fit the concept, possibly by adding a minor bit of a backstory that accounted for the different name or possibly not needing to add anything.
That's all part of the creative process. -
Quote:If you have to change your origin story to match a name, that isn't being creative that compromising to a sucky name system.Quote:One more thing: Before this goes any further, can we please pledge to break the cycle of how these threads usually go?
A: "I think that we should have a more open naming system."
B: "You suck."
A: "No, I just think that with the age of the game, we should take into account that the perfect name is no longer sitting out there."
B: "That's because you're stupid, unimaginative, and you suck."
You are also the only person I've seen use the word stupid. No one is claiming people are stupid.
Unimaginative might be inferred from my repeated comment of Be Creative, but even unimaginative people like me can Be Creative. -
My names are pretty simple. My costumes are pretty simple.
All but 3 of my characters have Texas in the name. 1 of those is a joke character that I've just never deleted. 1 of those is a themed character created for a server invasion that people liked so I remade him on my home server.
All but 4 of my characters have the same Red, White and Blue color scheme going on. 1 is the joke character. 1 is the themed character. 2 just added an additional color as their main coloring (Black on my villain main, Green on my Plant/Thorn Dom) in addition to the Red, White and Blue.
All but 1 of my characters use the same chest detail. The themed character. The joke character even has that same chest detail.
Have I always gotten my first choice of names? Nope. But I didn't have to change anything else about the character to make a slightly different name fit.
While the naming system isn't perfect, it's easy to work with if you follow one simple rule:
Be creative. -
Quote:Again, only speaks English and is thick as a brick (which is a valid character concept), why would they have a name in a language they likely can't pronounce?
And yes, when you have a character concept already in mind (I very, VERY rarely start off with the design and then think of an origin story, it's usually that I think of an origin story and the name comes to me), then it's very much a kludge to have to change your character concept to fit a name you don't want in the least.
I gave a few examples of why someone that only speaks English might use a name that isn't English. Here's a few more.
Maybe before they decided on a name they used their powers helping someone that spoke German and they called them Flammenwerfer and they liked the sound of it.
Perhaps they saw a design on a Football helmet and heard it called a Fleur de Lis and liked the sound of it so decided to use that for their name.
They were watching ESPN and they were showing footage of an earthquake in Mexico during a soccer match. The Mexican announcers referred to a Terremoto and it had a nice ring to it.
It all falls back to one thing:
Be creative. -
Quote:Feuern Sie Werfer isn't word salad, it's German. There's nothing creative about using a name like "Florid Uvula" for a fire blaster. It's just word salad. And just why would my born-in-America, only-speaks-English, thick-as-a-brick Brute have a name like "Douleur brutale"? It's a kludge at best.
Vider Le Lanceur isn't word salad, it's French.
Licenziare Il Lanciatore isn't word salad, it's Italian.
Surely you don't consider those obscure languages that no one knows.
Very few people born in America have a family tree that didn't originate from somewhere else in the world.
Why wouldn't someone want to honor a revered ancestor by naming them self in the language that ancestor spoke? Perhaps that ancestor was a hero as well and the brute is carrying on the family hero tradition and honoring that name. Perhaps it's for some other reason.
That's not a kludge. It's called a back story. Or part of an Origin story. -

Somebody's watching me.
And I've got no privacy.
I wish I could share the reasons for this post.
Unfortunately, it would likely violate some rule.

Quote:I know at least one character that has Jesus in his name. There are likely others as well.Angel, and Heaven are safe for the most part but references to the judeau christian god, and jesus may be grounds for genericing
Don't forget, Jesus is also a Hispanic name. Jesus Alou was one of the Alou brothers that played professional baseball, Jesus Guevara was a Venezuelan boxer (several boxers from various countries have been named Jesus), Jesus Quintana was a character in the film The Big Lebowski, James Jesus Angleton was the Associate Deputy Director of Operations for Counter-Intelligence of the CIA (ADDOCI) from 1954 to 1975, and too many more to list. -
Quote:As far as I know, all the Numbered moderators are NCSoft employess.
Incorrect.
Several of the OCR team have a numbered Moderator account as well. That way if they do post something in a thread it doesn't show up in the Community Digest.
I know a few of the numbered Moderator accounts that belong to members of the OCR team, but I don't necessarily know all of them.
To give a few examples:
There used to be a Moderator called Moderator 08. He had no presence as a redname except for the Moderator 08 account. He was promoted and got a redname and chose TheOcho as his redname based on the Moderator 08 name. When they had the Bay Area Meet & Greet in San Francisco in 2010, I met Moderator 05 at the Paragon Studios office (well, the lobby anyway, that's as far as I got) who had recently started working there. Several months later we were introduced to Beastyle on the forums when he got a redname.
So, not all numbered moderator accounts are NCSoft employees. Some may be, but not all. -
I can confirm that when the game launched you could get a Contact's cell number but it took running a huge number of missions.
I can't confirm being sent all over badplace and gone by a contact only to FINALLY get their number on the last mission they handed out. -
Head Librarian in our school district was an English Teacher for her first 40 or so years in the School District.
She says Semi-nightly is technically correct, but not the best wording for this usage. -
Quote:So it's going to be Wednesday this week? And now the Brutes are Thrushing instead of Thrashing?Next Rangle plot... er... Brutal Thrushing Thursday is two days away!
You sure know how to keeps things confusing.
Monday (today)
Tuesday (1 day away)
Wednesday (2 days away)
Thursday (3 days away)
I don't think I need to go on. Hopefully you can figure out the rest of the days of the week on your own.

Saw no responses here by the time I got home so did some testing using Windows 7.
I set IE as my default browser and changed the Text size in the browser to Large. Paragon Market looks normal to me.
I closed the game and within IE I zoomed to 200% on a page. Paragon Market looks normal to me.
I set IE back to 100% Zoom and Medium Text.
Closed the game then set Firefox to be the default browser again and set the Zoom to Text Only and raised it to 150%. Paragon Market looks normal to me.
Closed the game then set Firefox to Zoom everything and Zoomed to 200%. Paragon Market looks normal to me.
I set Firefox back to normal zoom settings.
I closed the game again and left my desktop set to 1920 x 1080 and set the in-game resolution to 1280 x 1024. Paragon Market looks normal to me.
I closed the game again and set my desktop to 1280 x 1024 then set my ingame resolution to 1920 x 1080. Paragon Market looks normal to me.
I closed the game and set the Windows font size to Largest but couldn't get into the game since I couldn't get to the Accept button on the EULA page (this was what I expected to happen). I closed the game and set the Windows font size to Medium. Paragon Market looks normal to me.
I closed the game and set the Windows font size back to Smallest. In the game I set the Window scale to 150%. Paragon Market looks normal to me.
I changed the Windows scale back to 100% and stopped testing.
Basically, I'm unable to duplicate the problem you are reporting.
Without knowing anything about your computer setup (OS, Video Card, Video Card driver version/date, Windows screen resolution, game screen resolution, game settings, etc.) I doubt I'd be able to offer any suggestions past this point. -
Paid employees.
I think it's a mix of some being paid by Paragon Studios and some being paid by NCSoft, but I'm not certain if NCSoft actually employs any of the moderators themselves.
