    HeroCon 2009!!

What do you mean WHICH? Let's collect 'em all.

Of course, that was the joke part. First we have to find out where the event will be so we'll know which is either closest to the event location of closest to the route from SJC to the event.

If it's anything like the one Moggie and Missy took me to in Austin, I'd be game for it.

It was the NCSoft event where they were getting ready for Tabula Rasa launch. The restaurant was within walking distance of the Dave & Buster's. And THAT D&B knew how to make some of their signature drinks properly, not that watered down crap we got at the D&B in Milipitas.

I'm curious to find out what the Justice * Junket will be this year.

EDIT: As long as we get proper FULL addresses this year. And complete directions.

You hear that Red Gren and Diamond Dragoon? I'm talking to you. I'll forgive infallible for his fallible directions to the liquor store since he was a visitor to the region as well.
  5. Don't send anything to Cryptic, they'll just laugh themselves silly and you'll get no assistance.

Cryptic has had 0 to do with the game for a little over a year andf a half.

    Rinse, repeat.

Gonna take a while for Power Customization to be fully Proliferated.

Hopefully, this will go over better than it did in Positron's thread. Some of these players have no sense of humor.

Although mac pointed out I'm rather lacking in humor.

Who cares, everyone knows I'm one of the biggest Dev [censored] Kissers's out here.

I'd have had this posted before mac's first post here if my ISP wasn't being snarky with me today.

  8. Not sure I've ever seen a HJT log where the only running process is HJT.

    Let's see.

The O17 entry could be a Domain Hijacker. If that isn't your ISP's DNS address, I'd kill it.

Kill the Bonjour mDNSResponder entry. It isn't needed while you are playing CoH and it's requests could be causing the network hiccups.

For similar reasons you can kill the wmpnetwrk service entry.

You could actually shut off your AVG since you know there are no updates today to make sure something in AVG isn't causing any network issues.

From what little there is of the HJT log, I don't see anything else that I can comment on. Maybe someone else will see something I've missed.

Since you mention running different versions of Windows, are these all on the same computer or on different computers? Are you running through a router? If so, have you tried resetting the router or checked for a firmware update? If you are using a router, have you tried connecting directly to verify that the router isn't the cause of the problems?
  9. It doesn't matter if you've connected in the past. If there is a problem anywhere between your computer and the CoH servers, you could have a routing issue that is out of your hands and likely out of the Paragon Studios and NCSoft hands to resolve.
  10. Try opening a command prompt (if using Vista or Windows 7 you'll need to elevate priveleges on it to Administrator) and type "ipconfig /flushdns" without the quotes then hit enter.

You should get a message that the DNS Resolver cache was successfully flushed.

If you get a different message, you either mistyped it or aren't running the command prompt with elevated priveleges.

It could be that something in the route between you and the game servers or the updater server is having problems. Clearing the DNS cache may force it to find a new path in case it is holding a bad address in the cache.
  11. If you updated to the 186.16 drivers, uninstall them and then install the 185.85 drivers from here.

There have been reports that the 186.16 drivers have problems on Vista or Windows 7 that the 185.85 drivers didn't have.

EDIT: Also still waiting for the HijackThis logs.
  12. No problems for me here in South Texas.
  13. Since the CoH Helper was from Windows 7, let's try that one for consistency.

  15. I think you're still misunderstanding a bit, and I'm not doing that great of a job explaining so I'll leave it to someone else to try to explain the difference between the a 32-bit OS vs 64-bit OS, and 32-bit machine vs 64-bit machine.

    Resolution Bug!

First off, upgrade Vista to SP2.

Second, your C: drive is getting really full, which will cause problems not only for Windows but also for CoH since it is installed on the C: drive. The swap file is goning to be using what little free space you have on the C drive quite a bit with only 2 Gb of ram.

Your video and Audio drivers are seriously out of date. For the video drivers, I'd recommend getting the 185.xx series of drivers instead of the 186.x series. I keep hearing that the 186 drivers are acting a bit wonky for people using Vista or Windows 7.

Try loading the game in Safe Mode and adjust the graphics settings from there instead of using Tweak CoH. I've had a few issues with Tweak CoH not keeping settings as well, so I used it only to get me a base entry and out of full screen mode, then was able to get in and tweak using the in game settings.

To get into Safe Mode, start the Updater, click Next but before clicking Agree put a check mark in the Safe Mode box. This will look rather ugly, but it will let you get to the menus reliably to adjust settings. You may want to set it to run in Windowed mode as well, so that if it hangs you can get to the Task Bar and Start buttons easier to try to kill the program and start over.

EDIT: Try this link to download the 185.85 WHQL drivers.

    Resolution Bug!

I've seen a few reports where Steam was involved, and wiping out the Steam load and installing clean to a different folder, for example C:\Games\CityOfHeroes\ , resolved the problems.

As for the other stuff running .... Hmmm .....

Kill off the 02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670 entry, Comrade.exe entry, Real Player entries, Google Toolbar updater and notifier entries, Olympus Device Detector entries, Scramby entries, PunkBuster entries, iPod entries, Logitech Desktop Messenger entries, the other various Messenger entries, the Adobe updater entries, Quicktime entries, java entries, the Pure Networks entries, Sure Thing entries .... well ... you can get the gist of this pretty quickly.

There are a lot of programs running simultaneously and any of them could be a part of the reason you are having these problems, or a combination of them could be causing the issues.

Perhaps the CoH Helper log with shine a bit more light on the problem.

Most new cards want at least a 500-watt power supply. They also have certain demands for amperage on the +12-volt rail. Yours has two +12-volt rails with 18A each, so 36A total.

One of the best cards around the $200 mark is the EVGA GTX 260. However, this requires a 500-watt power supply with 36A on the +12-volt rail. It's actually possible your power supply could cut it, but you'd be using it at near-100% capacity, and I wouldn't expect it to live a long (or happy) life under those conditions.

You could go with this combo:
    EVGA GTS 250
    OCZ StealthXStream 600W Power Supply
That would run just a little over $200. Ideally, you could put that PSU with the GTX 260, and land at about $230 after mail-in rebates.

One more question: is your computer a Dell 9200? EDIT: Disregard this.

    [/ QUOTE ]

That card looks very close to the one I was eyeballing. It's only marginally more expensive, so still within my price range.

The advice regarding the power supply is sage, and well worth listening to. It would do me little good to put in new equipment only to have the power supply die on me because I wasn't paying attention. I'll get a combo deal.

Still gonna need a memory upgrade tho. On 2GB of RAM, COH pretty much slams the machine hard. I'd like to give it a bit more breathing room. (And yeah, I understand that a lot of that has to do with the way Vista manages memory. Still...)

    [/ QUOTE ]

It's not Vista memory management that is the issue, it is a limitation of any 32-bit Windows OS and how memory is addressed. You may not remember is, but we had a smaller memory limitation with 16-bit versions of Windows. 64-bit versions of XP, Vista, and even Windows 7 do not have the 4 GB limit since a 64-bit OS handles memory addresses differently.

Just wanting to point this out since many people have a misconception that this is a Vista issue, not a Windows issue in general, or at least 32-bit versions of Windows.

    [/ QUOTE ]

By refusing to post a HJT log, it's rather difficult to tell if you overlooked anything or not.

Best of luck in finding a solution.
  21. Stick with nVidia for your graphics solution. They have much less problems with CoH than ATI does.

Do you really want to put in a new video card knowing that you'll need to turn of Water effects, Depth of Field, Anti-Aliasing, Anisotropic Filtering and Bloom?

  23. In some cases, it's not so much a matter of buying that specific brand of video card as it is "that's the video card that came in my new computer, and I couldn't upgrade to a different brand" without breaking into a different price range of computers.

That's the only reason I have an ATI HD 4850 video card in my new computer.
  24. From what other users have posted when asking for help, I'm going to say NO, you don't want to get a netbook to play CoH.

I'll paste a piece from a website I found describing what a Netbook is:

    [ QUOTE ]

A netbook is a streamlined mobile device designed for the Internet, so you can stay connected on the go. Get up-to-date news, the latest scores and weather information, access your e-mail and social networking sites, and enjoy digital videos, photos and music.

Netbooks may look like laptops, but they don't have the full capabilities of a computer. Instead, a netbook specializes in mobility and the Web, so it's great for travel or as a supplement to your main PC.

And just who might that be? This isn't NCSoft technical support. This is the Justice Server forums. No one here feeds the hamsters that power the server farms.

The people that are paid to watch that stuff have learned that it's best to avoid the Justice Server forums. It's a practice that is more conducive to good mental health.

Check the Server Status page. When Maintenance is occurring they will all be showing as Down.
