Try the 185.xx drivers from nVidia. Don't go for the 186.xx drivers yet.
-
And this is what kind of Technical Issue or Bug?
Wrong section of the forums.
Suggestions is down there "v" somewhere. -
At this point, you'd need to file support tickets with your ISP and with NCSoft.
Most likely neither of them would be able to do anything as it is most likely something between you and the CoH servers that is outside of the control of NCSoft or your ISP. -
Open the DOS prompt first by typing cmd and click OK.
Then, once you are at a command prompt, type it in.
Just because you can connect to other games west coast servers means nothing. You still can't connect to the CoH West Coast Servers. The issues are still somewhere between your computer and those servers. -
Actually, it's more an issue of the competency of the persons who wrote the original tools they have to work with and pieces of the game engine. Oh, and the lack of proper documentation along with it doesn't help.
Sometimes when they try to do something that "should" make sense or be fairly straightforward, it gets some wacky side effects that leave them scratching their heads because it is doing something that they can't find an obscurely buried reason for. -
What other servers are you unable to get to? If it is Virtue, Protector, Justice, Guardian and Champion then that means you aren't able to reach any of the West Coast servers. There is likely a routing issue somewhere between you and the West Coast server farms.
You could try to flush your DNS Cache to see if you can force it to find a viable route to the West Coast server connections by opening a command prompt (Run as Administrator in Vista or Windows 7) and type "ipconfig /flushdns" without the quotes then hit Enter. -
Upgrade Vista to Service Pack 2 as a first step. You may also want to try running CoH in Windowed mode.
Comparing how CoH performs versus how other games perform is comparing apples and oranges. Now, if you have another game running on the Cryptic Engine (that CoH runs on) that runs fine when CoH doesn't, that is comparing apples to apples. Unfortunately, no other games are running on the Cryptic engine used by CoH. -
Right. Calling the programmers lazy is a sure way to make sure a fix for this gets fast-tracked.
And by the way, maybe you can show them exactly what was done that broke this and how to fix it without breaking 15 other things?
You know, to go along with the whole lazy and careless attitude you seem to think they have. -
Mateo, glad you were able to rephrase what Mandu's earlier post said in a way that I apparently wasn't able to convey by telling them to follow Mandu's instructions.

So is there no way to procure the NA client other than by going through ncsoft/cohupdater?
I ask because i have the same problem (downloaded the eu client) but have a recently upgraded US account, and i can only get about a maximum of around 20-40kb/s from the updater on a good day.. and let me tell you 2.7 gig @ 40kb/s is a LONG time.. not even worth it, if you ask me.
[/ QUOTE ] You could buy a retail BOXED version of the game. The CD/DVD included will install most of it for you and will cut down your download time significantly. It'll only have to download an update patch instead of the full client.
[/ QUOTE ]
And it will get you a month of playtime with the included code. Depending on which box version you find, you can also get access to either the Magic Pack or the Cyborg Pack if you buy the Architect Edition box set.
And yes, I've seen some older boxed versions still on the shelves at some small computer shops and software outlets.
Seems a bit odd seeing the CoH DvD Collector Box set and GvE still on shelves, but the people I've talked to in those shops said they like having them there and dread when someone actually wants to buy them. Those guys are a bit quirky, but fun to visit with. -
Another option, which may or may not be feasible for you, would be to take your computer to a friends house, a business or even to a local computer shop that has a faster connection and run the updater to get the files.
If you go to a personally owned computer shop, some of them are quite friendly and willing to be of help in a case like this.
Since I don't know your personal situation, all I can do is offer some suggestions. -
For comparison, I'll give you another example of Minimum Requirements.
From the Microsoft website, these are the Minimum Requirements to run Windows XP:
Pentium 233-megahertz (MHz) processor or faster (300 MHz is recommended)
At least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM (128 MB is recommended)
At least 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available space on the hard disk
CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
Keyboard and a Microsoft Mouse or some other compatible pointing device
Video adapter and monitor with Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher resolution
Sound card
Speakers or headphones
At a class I was taking through the company I was working for at the time XP released we cobbled together enough memory out of 4 computers to have the 64 Mb that was the minimum, and proceeded to load up Windows XP.
It took half the day to get it to load the OS and come up to the login screen. Just the OS, nothing else.
It took 30 minutes for it to Start up, log in and finish rendering the desktop. We timed it since we were starting it up after lunch.
Did it run? Sure. Did it run in a manner that a normal person would expect it to run on the Minimum requirements? Heck no. Opening Wordpad took 10 minutes. Opening the Control Panel took 5 minutes, then another 8 minutes to render all of the icons when we switched it to Classic Control Panel. During lunch the "instructor" for the class had swung by a computer parts shop and borrowed enough RAM that we could put in the Recommended 128 Mb of RAM. The difference wasn't very noticeable in booting up or logging on, and only slightly faster launching Wordpad and Control Panel.
CoH luckily runs better than that on the Minimum Requirements, but I still wouldn't want to run it on even the Recommended Requirements.
Just remember, the OS will be using some of the memory etc. and then you have the game requirements on top of that. -
Follow the instructions in Mandu's post above.
Also, if you have any friends in your area you could copy their CoH folder to your computer, delete the log files and screenshots files, copy the updater to your desktop and point it to the folder you copied the files to. -
Cryptic Studios no longer has anything to do with the game either, aside from the game running on their engine.
Likely it is a legacy file that has been overlooked for text editing, probably because it is something that is so seldom triggeredf that the programmers may have forgotten the text that is on this message box.
You can file a bug report on it and provide a link to the image. That's of course no guarantee that it will be a priority to be fixed. -
Good to hear.
I'd still suggest freeing up a bit more space on the C: drive. I prefer keeping at least 25% free space on the drive Windows is installed on.
You also have a LOT of programs running that will eat up resources, and may be accessing the network as well and could possibly cause issues. Most of them are programs that don't have to be running all the time, especially at Startup. They will launch when needed, but the software manufacturer's love to have them run all the time.
I'd start in the O4 section and kill Adobe Readers Speed Launch (reader_sl.exe), the RealPlayer Update (realsched.exe), xboxstat.exe, nerocheck.exe, clonecdtray.exe, QuickTime task (qttask.exe), iTunes Helper (ituneshelper.exe), DaemonTools (daemon.exe), Dropbox.exe and your bittorrent client (Azureus.exe).
Then I'd start pruning services in the O23 section and set them to Manual. Apple Mobile Device Service, Bonjour Service, GetPlus Helper, iPod service, and the two Punkbuster services should all be set to Manual. They will start running when a program calls for them, but won't be eating resources you could use elsewhere.
I don't see anything calling LastFM automatically, so it is evidently a program you intentionally started that will be using network resources as you game. -
Windows and CoH are both installed on the C: drive, which has 2% Free Space. Both Windows and the game need more space on the drive. I'd recommend copying CoH to the E: drive and run the updater to direct it to that new location. Then clean out more space on the C: drive.
Lower your Physics Quality to Medium or High. Very High should only be used when you have an Aegeia PhsyX card installed and nothing I see in the CoH Helper log shows you to have one.
If it were me, I'd lower the AA and AF settings, lower the Water Quality, and World Texture Level. Once you get things running stable for a while, then slowly start adjusting upwares beginning with World Texture Level, then Water Quality and AA. I doubt I'd run AF at anything above 8X.
You "may" want to roll back the graphics drivers to the 185.xx drivers instead. There are known issues with Windows 7 and Vista with those drivers. Mateo loaded them on his XP setup and ran with no problems, but rolling back one step wouldn't hurt.
Awaiting HijackThis log. -
Odd. Not all of the CoH Helper log is showing. Specifically, the parts with information on your game settings including the graphics settings.
Sad to see that Toshiba is still behind on the drivers for that model. You may want to try the Mobility Modder program to get a more current drivers. Be sure to follow the instructions on the site exactly. From what I hear that is the most common cause of problems.
Out of curiosity, who is your ISP? I want to make sure I never sign on with them and let friends know not to sign on with them if there is a download cap, -
It's not just NCSoft fixing things on their end.
This is an OpenGL issue and NVidia has had several issues over the last few years with OpenGL games, not just CoH. It's not the coding of the game that changed, it's the coding in the drivers, and that isn't NCSoft's doing. And yes, if you go through the patch notes for various NVidia drivers over the past couple of years, you will find that they fixed things in different versions of their drivers not just for CoH, but also for other games.
Trying to compare how CoH runs to how other games run is much like comparing apples and oranges. Now, if you want to compare it to another game running on the Cryptic engine that CoH runs on I won't complain since that is comparing apples to apples. Unfortunately, there are no other games running on that engine that I know of.
As far as nothing else being affected by the NVidia drivers, have you looked at the NVidia forums? There are problems in WoW, LoTRO, CoD4, and Warhammer that I remember seeing the name of the game more than once. -
Haxi2
Don't use the 186.xx drivers. If you did, download the 185.xx drivers, uninstall the 186.xx, run DriverSweeper, and reboot. Cancel any Driver installations that come up, then install the 185.xx drivers instead.
The 186.xx drivers are causing problems for Windows 7 and Vista users. Another user downloaded the 186.xx drivers on XP and had no problems, so XP users should be fine.
The problem that mulletman has is different, especially since he is using the newest drivers for his video card already.
I'd recommend trying to run the game in Safe Mode to see if that will let you into the game. If it does, go into the Menu > Options and on the Video tab set it to run in Windowed mode.
If you can't get there using Safe Mode, download Tweak CoH and use it to set the graphics settings before loading the game. You should be able to set it for Windowed mode from there. -
First, post a log from running CoH Helper as it will give information about your system and the CoH installation and settings.
Second, post a log from running HijackThis. This will show what else is going on on your computer while you are playing CoH.
Those are the two programs houtex mentioned earlier that we would need.
What type of download limit do you have? Is it through your ISP or through Steam?
If it is a Steam download limit, you can download the PC Client installer from here and save it to your Desktop. When you run it, do NOT let it install to the Default directory. Instead, have it install to C:\Games\CityOfHeroes and run it from there instead of the Steam install.
If it is some other type of download limit, do you have any friends nearby that play CoH? If so, you can copy their CoH directory, put it in the C:\Games\CityOfHeroes folder I mentioned earlier, copy the Updater to the desktop (not a shortcut) and run the updater. It will want to know where to install the game, and you can point it at the C:\Games\CityOfHeroes folder you copied the files to. At that point it will merely write a couple of registry entries and should launch the game fine. The one thing you may want to do if you use this method is to delete the contents of the logs and screenshots folders. -
You may also want to try out the ATI drivers from Omega Drivers.
Also, be sure to look at BillZBubba's ATI Issues and Settings Recommendations post that is stickied above. You can basically start with just the first post, then make minor tweaks as you like once you get things running stable. -
No. All of the drinks tasted watered down at the D&B in Milipitas, including the Long Island Iced Tea.
The signature drinks were screwed up in how they were made as well as being rather weak.
For example, the Lethal Weapon is a layered shot served in a Hurricane glass shaped Shot glass. In Austin, not only did it take my breath away for a bit, it was beautiful as all get out in the layering. In California, there were no layers. At all. It was just the alcohols poured in together with no artistry. And it was weak as well as being ugly.
At that point, I stopped buying mixed drinks. I did have a few shots of Jager, but stuck mostly to water for the event.
I made up for it in Jager consumption at the after party. Until someone emptied my bottle that is.
Last year I planned a bit better, but I still have no clue what happened to my Jager bottle between the dining room and coming to in my room. -
Manoa's A is one you definitely don't want to miss.
