Quote:They've already answered that. They had to use a third party to develop the standalone tab on Facebook that accessed the list of codes. They don't have the capability to add something like that to Twitter. In my personal opinion, this is the best manner of giveaway. The facepalm thing, that is, with a page that generates a code. Instead of using a site I'd prefer not to use, having two broswer windows open, one sitting on the page to claim the code, and one on Twitter, hoping I can get the code and activate it before everyone else doing the same freakin' thing activates it and I lose my shot at that code, and all the others posted at that time as well because I took too long. This is just my two cents.
Quote:Yes, we're trying to grow another outlet. There's strategery in them thar hills.
The "code generator" wasn't generating anything at all. It was pulling from a static database of codes. It was also programmed by a third party and was a standalone tab on our Facebook page. Something we don't have the option to do on Twitter. -
You may also want to turn off Digsby and Origin to see if they are interfering with the launch of the game.

Can you start the game in Safe Mode?
Open the NCSoft Launcher but don't start the game yet. Right-click on the City of Heroes entry and select Properties. At the lower left of this screen put a checkmark in the box called Launch in Safe Mode, click OK and then launch the game.
Did that work? If so, start turning up graphic settings one at a time until you find which is causing your problem. I'd recommend leaving Ambient Occlusion and Advanced Occlusion set to OFF.
You may want to monitor your computer temperatures as well, especially the graphics card tempss. Make sure that the computer is free from dust build-up as that can cause heat issues.
One more question for you. What is the brand and wattage of the power supply you have? Is it enough to fully support the video card under a heavy load? The brand, model and wattage should be listed on the side of the power supply. You'll likely need to open the case to see it if you don't have the information available elsewhere. -
Quote:Devil's Advocate time with one of your caveats. This idea would be awesome - /signed.
Couple caveats
- if you dont have enough influence, maybe have it slot out the first X enhancements that you can afford.
- make it work for both SOs and DOs.
- If you are currently slotting DOs, give an option to upgrade to SOs.
To the person who suggested using IOs, I think those are inferior to SOs until about level 35 or 40 - not a good option, and tend to be more costly.
If you don't have enough influence how does it decide which enhancements to upgrade? Shouldn't the player have a choice as to what gets upgraded first? -

I'm glad you posted this.
I've been biting my tongue since I recognized him during the first Twitch.TV Coffee Talk. Of course, you calling him Adric is what caught my attention at the time.
Fab, it's been great knowing that you were able to live your dream of working there if only for a short time. It gives us all hope.
I wish you the best in the new job you get to start next Monday and I'm glad it's also doing something you'll enjoy. Just be careful with the Frisbee's.
Hope to see you again if I ever get a chance to get back out to California. -

I've always thought it was some MA Scrapper.
Oh wait, you said Villain.
Nevermind.

Quote:Thank you.Glad to read that; when I read the title I realized, you know, in over two years of reading these forums, I've seen a lot of very informative posts by you. I'm always more likely to log into the game than I am to log into the forums, so when I'm here I appreciate a good signal to noise ratio where I can find it. I don't know if you're conscious of it, but you're one of the few forum posters who do well at the signal part.
I do often contribute noise, but I try to keep the signal-to-noise ratio leaning far to the signal side of things. -
Well played good sir.
Well played. -

Quote:I think another part of it is that it is unclear as to what might be copyrighted or trademarked with that character and who might have such a claim. Marvel has a Hercules, DC has a Hercules, Disney has a Hercules, there have been multiple other Hercules characters in comics and similar media over the years.Well, if he actually had his Hercules approved, then good for him. Maybe going straight to customer support for a ruling was a good move. Or maybe he was just lucky. I remember some time ago a player complained that his "Thor" was genericized even though his character was closely based on norse mythology rather than the marvel comic hero. I think any time you choose a name that is already is use in a published work, you have to assume there is a certain risk it will be genericized no matter how strong a case you have that you are not violating any copyright or trademark. The GMs are not experts in the finer points of copyright law and are going to tend to play it safe when making a call.
For example, I think the Marvel trademark was for The Incredible Hercules.
Of course, Thor has been a character for Marvel, DC, Comico and other comic publishers.
One could reasonably make a case if the Thor character was based strictly on mythology and his depictions there but they might have to have the case escalated and present a good argument to the Senior GM. Even then, they might decide to err on the side of caution. -
Quote:If you report yourself, it varies as to how the CS people will handle it. In some cases they will realize that it was an inadvertant violation and change it if they feel it violates the IP policy. In some cases they may determine that it doesn't violate the IP policy and their decision in that case may be either to do nothing or to go ahead and issue a rename.Oddly.. when you report yourself nothing happens...
Recently I discovered that Alpha 6 is a character in Power Rangers, which made me sad because well i really HATE power rangers. So i went ahead and just re-rolled my main (even though she was incarnated, bots/pain is.. blah) to Bots/traps gave her a awesome new name Athena Six...
Petitioned to have my global handle changed explaining that it might be a CP violation.. that was a no go..Requested a forum name change I think that is still pending.
You get one free global chat handle change as it is. Unless you've used it already, you should be able to change it yourself. We've been told in the past that once it is used you cannot get another. I do know of one player that was able to get his reverted due to his child accidentally changing it to a random string of characters while playing at the keyboard. Customer Service was really nice by doing that one.
We were given a free global handle change in the summer of 2006 and even if you'd already used your one allowed change you were granted another.
There was a problem with the global chat system later that suffered some instability and caused players global handles to change. I'm not sure if they were allowed to get a rename or not.
As for the forum name change, that has to be done by the OCR team (Z, Hit Streak, Freitag). Customer service can't do that. -
Not necessarily. Access to the forums does not equal access to the PlayNC site. It also doesn't equal access to Twitter.
Quote:(Bolding added by me)
The only method...being...the Internet? How are you posting to an Internet forum then, messenger pigeons?
...I realize my points are a little weird, now I'm just having fun.
Some have hardware in place to handle blocking sites that violate those policies.
For example, the school district I work in blocks Twitter and Facebook. If my phone or iPad are connecting to the internet through the school network, those sites are blocked.
They also block most discussion forums although I was able to get them to put in an exception for these boards since you must have an account to post there.
The main CoH site is still blocked even though the forums are accessible.
The PlayNC site is also blocked by policy.
That being said, due to being in the Technology Department I have an override I can use to access blocked sites if needed to get to things I need for Technical Support issues. We are asked not to use that for Facebook, Twitter or any other sites unless we are at our desk with no one around. Since I'm rarely at my desk except for lunch and the end of the day, that's not a problem.
But, if I were using my override in the classrooms, computer labs, library or offices to access things that have nothing to do with my job, other staff members that don't have that access could, and would, complain and could cause problems for the Technology Department so that we would lose those privileges. I won't do that to myself or to the other members of the Technology Department and I expect the same from them.
Students would likely complain as well, but they have the most restricted access as it is and they complain about everything that's blocked, so we don't pay much attention to their complaints. But when their parents start to complain, that causes the same problems as when other staff members complain if not more.
So yes, it's entirely possible that people can have access to one site but not another. It's also possible that the access is only available to them in specific locations or at specific times.
My work phone is a smart phone. It has Twitter and Facebook built in. Due to the construction of the building there are very few places inside the buildings where I have a cell signal. We are still discouraged from using Twitter and Facebook on our phones while at work, even if we aren't using the wifi network. -
Quote:Yes, Randomly as I feel like it. And yes, I can solo during these events.
So do you participate and if so how often - in random events?
Should they be triggerable?
Should they have a big enough reward that makes people want to do them?
Should they be in selected zones so that people actually see them and care?
Should they happen less often so that they are more special?
Yes for the ones that are already triggerable, especially if badges are available (no, I'm not a badger but others are and I don't like limited times to gain these defeat badges). No need to change the zone events or GM spawns.
Sure, but fun is often reward enough.
Sure, if I see a notice about Babbage I know to go to Boomtown, if I see a notice of a Troll rave I know to go to Skyway, if I see a notice of Fires I know to go to Steel.
The zone events seem to be about right for occurrences (fires, raves, clockwork activity) and the GM spawns (Jurassik, Babbage, Kraken) seem to be about right as well. The triggerable events (Rikti, Zombie, Banners) are dependent on player action so those seem to vary but are fine as they are.

Quote:Not all of the issues were fixed.
Quote:One, that's kind of depressing. I'd like to think my fellow CoH players are brighter than the average internet user. Two, one wonders how these numbers would change if the broken parts of the forums, such as the login, were ever fixed?
Several players have reported that instead of keeping the cookies and simply expiring them at the end of 8 hours the cookies are being deleted if you close the browser. Arcanaville can give more information on what's happening with the cookies since she's looked at it to see what is happening.
Even if I leave the browser open and never touch the Back button it will regularly log me out before 8 hours have passed if there has been any inactivity at all.
The Remember Me button does absolutely nothing. Luckily, my browser will fill in my username and password for me at home. I obviously don't have this enabled at work due to security reasons.
There are also the random logout bugs. -
Quote:He already addressed this. It wasn't as simple as you make it seem. There was a third party that programmed a tab on the Facebook page that pulled from a database of codes. They don't have a way to add such a feature to Twitter. Why not have an unlimited amount for a period of time or a HUGE quantity for Thursday say like 10,000 (give or take) so that it's not the mini "black Friday" of trying to pile over each other for so few codes when I'm sure there's a lot of people.
Orr exactly what you guys did on Facebook for "facepalm" emote only on twitter for the day and give the whole day to let people get a code
Me myself am hardly on twitter and don't usually keep up with promotions :/

I will admit that I follow and interact with them on Twitter (without having had to divulge any personal information aside from an email account that I created for that purpose). My tweets are private so you have to have my permission to see what I post.
I also Like the CoH page on Facebook and interact there asking and answering questions or just making comments as I do here. Facebook has very minimal personal information about me and it is blocked so that only those I allow can see that information. I know of people who are not giving any actual personal identification on Facebook. -
I think there may be a couple of issues at work here as to why there is no distinction between Free and Premium and why there aren't separate levels of access on the forums.
One is that a decision was made to tie the forum login to the game account when they switched to vBulletin. The NCSoft billing system only differentiates betwen two types of accounts: Free or Paid. There don't have a way set up in the billing system to differentiate between completely Free and Premium accounts. Since that is the system tied to for forum authentication, they would have to rewrite the code for the system to make that distinction.
Second is the Seattle web team. They are the ones that have control of the forum software. I'm not sure I'd trust them to handle setting up a third type of authenticated access for Premiums. -
Quote:They haven't announced specifically that they are fixing the text errors, but they did call this "Fixing all the things" during the Coffee Talk (why call it a coffee talk, I saw no coffee in evidence).Actually I didn't know they planned on fixing the text errors. How extensive is said fix supposed to be? Just the glaringly obvious ones like how Positron is now the grandfather of Ms. Liberty?
Or *gasp* dare I hope that they are pulling a major spell check on the game and fixing it all?
If they do that, I will take up a collection so I can order the largest food basket I can find online and send it to Paragon Studios.

Since you mentioned other things in the lyrics that haven't been specifically announced for I24 I decided to point out the elephant in the room that you didn't mention, the text errors.
Since they referred to it in that manner, I have to hope that text errors are on the list of "all the things". -

Quote:I think, as a general rule (and quite possibly as a policy), most if not all GMs will automatically genericize any name that is identical to an existing comic character, even if the character's appearance and other details do not match that of the copyrighted character. Now, if your character's name is similar to or incorporates an existing character's name as part of a longer name (i.e, Total Apocalype, the Phantom Demon), I think it will depend on each GM's personal judgement whether or not it looks like you're infringing on a copyright. The names you've listed as having been genericized seem to follow a pretty consitent patern long set by the GMs.
As for the player who was "allowed" to keep a character named Hercules, I'm guessing that was a player who was simply never reported and who would've been genericized if he had been. Even though it's true that no one owns the copyright on names like Hercules, Thor, comic publishers do own their specific depictions and interpretations of these mythological figures, and I assume the GMs are going to error on the side of caution and genericize any name that's already in use in the comics.
Actually, I'm fairly sure that player has been reported and has even contacted CS about the character himself. He's discussed it before.
His character is built off of the Hercules from mythology, not the Marvel Comics interpretation of that character, the DC Comics interpretation of the character the Disney interpretation of the character or even the old Trans-Lux Television animated series The Mighty Hercules (from the early to mid 60's). The poster knows this and that explains his "for various reasons" comment about the other player. -
I had no problems at standard difficulty on any of my Blasters. I had little problems at +1 or x2 settings on them.

You can stop rejoicing now. I'm not leaving.
Watching the replay of yesterday's Twitch.TV while the forums were down this morning I recognized one of the music videos that was being played on the secondary monitor of the person sitting in the background in line with the camera.
It was So Long, Farewell from The Sound of Music. (May not be the exact clip that was playing, but close enough).
Best of luck in your new job Moderator 09.
