Let's see. When I first remember any discussion of looking at new forum software, I think CuppaJo was still here, although it may have been Awry or Cricket. I dunno, that's been a long time ago. I know Ex Libris and Lighthouse mentioned it several times on the forums and I think that was brought up before the first Meet & Greet they worked in Cali. That M&G was around the time that they announced that NCSoft had bought the rest of the City of IP from Cryptic. That was back when Cryptic was still looking at doing the Marvel MMO.
But maybe my memory is off. I am old and forgetful.
Oh, but I'm not so forgetful that I can't recall how to ignore people on the forums. I learned that trick on another vBulletin forum a while back. And you get the pleasure of being the first I've ignored on the new forums.
Adios. -
Okay. Installed Firefox 3.5.1 on my Vista x64 SP2 system. No problems logging in or staying logged in. Browsed through several forums, even looked at the French forums for grins, read several English posts in various forums, posted, stayed logged in the entire time.

Instead of disabling Signatures, try disabling Show Images instead. Sure, it means that if Niv or Posi or someone posts a pic in a thread that you won't see the pic initially, but you will have a clickable link so that you can see the picture in a separate window if you want to.
I'm not sure how this is going to work, but I'm going to try to link to a post in another forum where someone explained why they Back button doesn't work here like it did in the UBB forums. It's not just setting an option not to reload the page apparently. Anyway, here is the link. I hope it works since I'm still figuring out vBulletin. -
The fun thing about being able to disable those img tags is that I can see the actual like to the pics, so I can click them to open them in a separate window if I want.
Such as I did with the cover to Volt Sentinel's May '09 issue. -
Gee, I could post a link to a picture in the old forums.
Oh wait, it's because I turned off the img tage until we get more options for disabling IMG tags in sigs only.
But yeah, the new forums have their advantages and disadvantages. Sometimes they are even the same thing.

And there's one place.
Another

or
possibly
one
of
the

forums.

D'oh, didn't think of viewing the source code.
And I knew someone would be along that could remember or explain what caused the Back button behavior much better than what I could remember from the I13 Beta discussion.
Thanks muchly. -
I'll be writing one or two guide posts in the next few days, highlighting how to do many of the things we used to be able to do on the other boards, and some of the new features of the vBulletin boards that we didn't have before.
I'm sure that the Community Team still has more tweaks to apply, possibly including some more skins, styles, templates, vB mods, and more.
As to when I'll get the guides posted? Dunno, but I'd ask that you hold off on letting the first impression color your opinion of the new forums too much, especially when you haven't had time to explore the capabilities of the system. -
I'm not, but I know the mods are glad the we can no longer easily make

Quote:They can consolidate Community and Moderator positions, not have to have separate (paid) positions for other items on the forums, only one place to post information (no more of the UK boards getting the good news before the US boards) and several other reasons that make a lot of sense for, if nothing else, financial reasons.Ditto on the default to the English forums. Kinda annoying to have to select English everytime. Also, wondering what the logic is in combining the EU and NA forums when we can't play together? I mean, it's kinda lame that I can meet new kewl CoH&V players on the forums but can't actually interact ingame with them.

Quote:You can. Trying to remember how it was stated. It's either here or in the Feedback thread.Yay for new forums - still getting the hang of it, and wishing I could set a default to just take me to the English forums, but oh well.

Basically, go to front page of forums and log in. Click on English to open those forums (I think that was the step mentioned), set your bookmark/favorite/homepage to that page.
I've finally found a way to get my homepage set the way I want with just my Favorite Threads by having my Homepage by my UserCP page and the Subscribed Forums feature.
I wish now I could remember who it was that got me started on that road so I could thank them properly with Rep. I'll find the post eventually though in the next day or so and get the Rep assigned, unless they disabled it. -
Quote:30 second lag between posts = hate.
I type FAST. This is a feature which plagues forums I habit elsewhere, and it is as annoying here as anywhere else.
We have to wait 30 seconds between costume changes. We've hardly ever (I can only think of once or twice) had an issue about posting floods here... Please oh please disable that "feature".
Unfortunately, I can think of several places where it might be abused.
I could see lowering it to 15 seconds. Maybe. Unless that gets abused.
As a side thought, it might be an attempt to avoid some of the accidental double-posts, although there may be mods or something that can handle that instead. Unless, that mod is what's causing this. Something to think about at least. -
Quote:Seen. Reported. It's funny, there's a lot of arguing against graphic sigs because of the potential abuse, but as of yet I've not seen any major issues with huge sigs or inappropriate images. I don't see why people can't bite their tongue and wait til it actually happens and then report the user rather than try to deny a feature which allows freedom of expression straight from the word go.
No further comment by me about that action. -
Quote:Nice looking forums. I would suggest updating Twitter info? Still some folks might not be at the boards yet, because they were expecting a "chirp" on their cellphones or emails. Not that I am one of them or anything
I see several tweets today from Positron, BABs, Niviene, TheDarkWatcher and others, it looks like they just forgot to tweet from the CoH_OCR account.
I blame Moderator 08
EDIT: Oddly, I didn't get that tweet either, but when I look at the CoH_OCR page, I see a message from 7 hours ago Welcoming us to the new forums. The tweet before that we TheOcho making the comment that the new forums are so pretty and then taunting us about us wishing we could see them. Odd. Wonder why those tweets didn't come through like the rest? Ah, found it further in my history. Right after that Niv tweeted that they were down again. CoH_OCR didn't update after that. I still blame Moderator 08.
SECOND EDIT: Welcome to the forums Scorned Demonion. -
Quote:I'm sorry to hear you are having slow loads on the forums. I currently have 5 different instances of IE 8 open to the forums in different sections, continually refreshing them, opening posts, replying, etc. and I'm getting much faster responses than I did with the UBB forums. Is there a way to get it to load faster, this is horrible. 2Mb connection, dual core 3Ghz and 4Gb ram and this forum thinks I'm using a C64.
I know Vb is bad for slow loading but please sort something out.
That rating thing is a griefers paradise. I'm not four years old, I have zero interest in validation from unknowns on the internet.
And why don't all my saved bookmarks work? That's really annoying people. You might as well have purged the entire forum.
There also seems precious little City of Villains too - I use the red skin but I get hero icons? Come on couldn't someone have designed something different for redside?
And when I log in, why must I log into boards.cityofheroes.com? Attempting to log into boards.cityofvillains.com puts you into a non-log-in loop. If you can't log in using that url then why is it live and why does it have a log in button.
So far I'm unimpressed.
You can turn your ratings off in the UserCP. I've seen at least one poster already that has it turned off. And she's someone I'd have expected to see with a high rating due to how helpful she's been over the years in making avatars, animated valentines, specialized icons for for various uses, being a big part of a large group across several servers (that I won't name to keep her anonymity) among other things.
The saved bookmarks don't work because part of the address of the post on the old UBB forums was ... wait for it .... UBB specific code. These vBulletin forums don't use that UBB code, just as the UBB forums didn't use the vBulletin code. Those were links to websites that no longer exist with that address. The posts may still exist, and if they do you can find them and edit your bookmarks to show the new addresses. I could be really sarcastic and make a comment about how I've never seen a webpage change it's address (often with a comment about updating your favorites or bookmarks), but I'd rather not get modded this soon on the new boards. And sarcasm wasn't the reason for my reply. Otherwise, yeah, I'd go there.
They are still making updates to the system, they got the forums up and going as quickly as they could, now they can start tweaking things and making refinements such as adding Villainous icons, getting all of the additional addresses such as boards.cityofvillains.com and others to work correctly, etc. Give them a bit of time. They pushed themselves pretty hard getting these up as quickly as they could in time for Double XP weekend.
Have a little patience, explore some of the underpinnings of vBulletin, let them get some good mods for vBulletin installed or some new templates, styles, skins, etc. You might just find that there are things you really do like about them. -
Quote:I'll assume you ARE aware that global channels are handled by a different server from the game servers? And that globals are cross-server? So, if you overload most of the servers, as inevitably happens on a Double XP weekend, the global servers are going to be even more overloaded than usual, right?Seems to be stable for the moment, but I'm still seeing trouble with global channels - messages getting lost or taking several seconds to get through.
I know from seeing some tweets that several Devs (some we don't even have names for) are keeping an eye on the various systems and taking steps as needed to try to keep this as smooth as they can with minimal downtime to fix issues. -
I know it was complained about on the I13 Beta forums. Apparently several of the complaints fell on deaf ears.
From what I remember, it's something in how vBulletin is passing tags or something through the browser. But, since it's been so long and it wasn't an issue that overly concerned me, I don't recall the details.
Maybe someone with a better memory will come along to clear it up.

Quote:I find it a PITA that every time I hit the Back button, it takes me to the top of the last page. Makes it annoying to read multiple threads when you are having to scroll back down and find your place.
The old forums were much easier to navigate as it took you back to where you were on the last page.
I don't use the Back button. Instead, I use the Forum Jump navigation tool in the lower right corner to take me back to the Index to the forums I'm currently reading, or to Jump to the Index to a completely different forum. -
Quick question for you GibberingLunatic. Is there a way to see what version of vBulletin these forums are on? I've been looking everywhere but I'm likely overlooking it.
TIA -
Ok Coldmed, what browser are YOU using. And what Version? You are aware that the UserName AND Password are both case sensitive?
I'm on my Vista computer now using IE 8 but I can install another browser if needed to help troubleshoot. -
Oh, and someone mentioned in another thread about Exteel having used the vBulletin forums, and I know that Aion is using them (due to another poster mentioning it) so it may be a NCSoft-wide change.
Dunno.
Don't care.
Comparisons to CO don't bother me after looking at their graphics.

Quote:I'm not really seeing how the new editor is WYSIWYG. Am I the only one? Just wanna make sure I'm not missing out on a shiney! :P
I think it's more a case of not really being WYSIWYG but having the quick HTML type editing tools without allowing full HTML code in the posts.
Someone at vBulletin apparently thought that having the Bold, Italicize, Font, Links, Quotes, and other formatting buttons at the top is what it means to be WYSIWYG.
It's probably as close as we'll get since I doubt they will enable HTML code in posts.
Talk about a nightmare. Sheesh.
