  1. My first attempt at any kind of guide. Really more of a How-To. Here goes.

How do I get the new vBulletin forums to display the Favorite Forums look that I had on the old UBB forums? Well, I can't get it exactly the same, but I can come close, and so can you. Here's how.

For this example, we are going to assume that your language is English and your Favorite Forums are the same as mine, so that would be the Announcements forum, the HeroCon forum, the Training Room forum, the Technical Issues and Bugs forum, and the Justice Server forums.

    1. Okay, go to http://boards.cityofheroes.com and login.

    2. Make sure that the line saying English has a - on it, and that Francais and Deutsch have a + on them.

    3. Click the title of News, Events, & Announcements to expand that forum section.

    4. Click on Announcements to go to that forum.

    5. On the right side of the page, under the page numbering area, look for Forum Tools with a downward pointing arrow.

    6. Click the downward pointing arrow and select Subscribe to this forum.

    7. On the following page, set your Notification Type to No email subscription and click the Add Subscription button.

    8. You'll get a message that the forum has been subscribed to and then you'll be redirected back to the Forum.

    9. Use the Navigation links at the top of the forum to go back to English. Luckily, now this will have each forum section expanded so that you have a similar look to the old UBB forums default front page.

    10. Repeat beginning with step 4 for each forum until you have all of your Favorite Forums set.

    11. Use the top Navigation links to go to the UserCP.

    12. You will see a section in the middle called Subscribed Forums with a - to the right. If there are any sections above that, make sure that they have a + next to them.

This will now look about as close as you can get it to the old forums Favorite Forums view. You can bookmark this page and then use the bookmark to get back to it or set it as your homepage (or as one of the tabs of your homepages section), depending on personal preference.

To remove a Forum from the Subscriptions, just go to the forum, select the arrow next to Forum Tools and select Unsubscribe from this forum and confirm if needed.

You can get to this look anytime using the UserCP link, and since it has the Private Messages links in the upper right, you can easily access them from here as well as many other features of the vBulletin boards such as editing your Profile, Options, Ignore List, and other items.

If you have questions, just PM me.

    Bwahahahaha.

Seeing this post, with the (current) post count of 69 gives this a whole new perspective.

  3. Oddly, only the links for Castle and BAB show any results. And I know that TheOcho has posted as has Avatea. I think Niviene has. No clue about Positron.

EDIT: could you include the steps you used to get the search results? I've had ... interesting ... results with some name searches.
  4. Can you include the following?

    Ghost Falcon

    TheDarkWatcher

    pohsyb

WarWitch (I forget exactly how she spells it, sorry)

    Synapse

    Sunstorm

    ......

    Thanks.

    NoScript 1.9.7.7
    Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant 1.1
    DownloadHelper 4.6
    DivX Player Netscape Plugin 6.1.0.0
    DivX Web Player 1.5.0.52
    Java Platform SE 6 U13 6.0.130.3

    ShockWave Flash 9.0.124.0
    ShockWave for Director 11.0.0.429
    Windows Presentation Foundation 3.5.30729.1

    And that's my browser environment.
I tried NoScript based on your recommendation, but I'm going to have to uninstall it since it doesn't seem to play nicely with some of the features of these forums. As an example. I can no longer hover over icons and get a popup telling me what that icon does. Clicking the Quick Reply icon took me to the full Quote editing window and didn't allow me to use the Quick Reply that I was trying to get to. I don't like having to fight my addons to do what I normally do. Yeah, I know I can temporarily allow this site or always allow it, but it's more trouble than I want to deal with.

I'll pass on this one. Especially since I basically only use Firefox for testing sites that are work related or that format themselves to look nasty in IE but ok in Firefox. Yeah, there are a few. And some that refuse to run in IE at all.
  6. First of all, I'd highly recommend getting Service Pack 2 for Vista.

Also, are you coming in through the boards.cityofheroes.com address or one of the others such as boards.cityofvillains.com or boards.coh.com or uk.boards.cityofheroes.com etc.

If you are using one of the latter, try the boards.cityofheroes.com address and see if that resolves the problem. You can set the Theme to be the Villain theme even though the address is a Hero address.
  7. UBB did some ... rather odd ... things with addresses of posts, often depending on how you found it. Much of that didn't translate to the new vBulletin forums, although I'm sure they attempted some scripts (maybe not, but I'd be surprised if they didn't) and weren't able to convert them all correctly, so rather than having even more bugs to troubleshoot they left it as is.

If the Welcome to Ouroboros guide is in the Guides section, it should still be there since that section is, IIRC, set to not purge. If you can find it and contact High Beam with the new address, High Beam can correct it. If High Beam is no longer active, you could PM TheOcho, Avatea, Niviene, or EMPulse with the links to both High Beam's post and the corrected address for Brad's post and ask them to edit the post.

EDIT: Here is the address to Brad's post on the new forums. Do with it what you will. http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=121998
  8. It sounds very similar to the problems people are having with boards.cityofvillains.com and boards.coh.com

I'd guess that it's a temporary thing that they'll be ironing out in the next several days/weeks along with some other forums issues. They were rushing to get the boards.cityofheroes.com site up and running and likely didn't get to finish troubleshooting problems with the other named sites. Or, they'll be doing away with all of those other site names and just using the boards.cityofheroes.com address. I'm sure they'll let us know Soon™
  9. Yeah, it was posted in the Announcements section for some reason.

Like anyone would look for it there.

Actually, they were looking at new forum software before Cryptic bought the CO IP if I'm remembering correctly. I "think" that the discussions actually started before NCSoft had bought the rest of the City Of IP from Cryptic, but I could be wrong on that one. Also, others have mentioned that Exteel used vBulletin forums and someone else mentioned that Aion is using vBulletin so I'm thinking it's a bit of a cross-NCSoft switch.

UBB was a good starter forum setup, but vBulletin is quite a bit better in many ways, not the least of which is the back end administration.

  12. On my XP box, the desktop is set to 1200 x 1024 and even in Firefox the background image isn't fully loaded. I can see Statesman and Lord Recluse completely, all of Positron and most of Mako, but only small pieces of Sister Psyche and Ghost Widow.

So yeah, it's not just restricted to IE. I'm a big proponent of the change, but this is one I haven't found how to fix here yet.

    Negatives:
    - Highlighting of thread titles that have new replies is just barely noticeable. Needs to be bolded like the old forums ( or given a different color ).
    - Need text for the various action icons. ( i.e. respond to message, etc. )
    - Would like to be able to click on the thread title to be taken to the first unread message instead of clicking a little arrow icon.
    - No way to have a link where you specify the displayed text for that link.
    - No obvious way to return to the forum category list.
    - A bit too much padding in the forum category list, requiring more scrolling than before.
    - I was hoping for more space for my signature. Still limited to just 5 lines...making it pretty difficult to advertise arcs.
I'll try to respond to a few Negative points you brought up. One I'm going to ask for clarification on. I think I know what you are asking, but I want to be sure.

    - I agree that it is difficult to quickly spot thread titles that have new replies, unless you look for the small downward pointing triangle to the left of the thread title. Clicking that icon (though rather small) will also take you to the first unread post in the thread. I'm thinking that clicking the forum title not taking you to the first unread post is a vBulleting standard, although I could be wrong. If it's not a standard, there's likely a mod or theme or something to enable this. It may take some time to get it all smoothed out.

    - Most of the action icons have a popup text if you hover over the icon without clicking it. Actually, much of the forum has this hover-over popup action, including thread titles giving the first pieces of the original post. Very useful for those threads titles like I Had an Idea or similar.

    - This is the one that I need clarification on. You want to have a link that you can specify the displayed text for the link? If what you are meaning is having words be the links, like I did in that sentence with the word specify, that's easy to do, although it wasn't obvious to me at first. Basically, type the text the way you want it, then go back to the word(s) you want to be the link, highlight them and click the Insert Link icon and enter the address. You can also use the same [ url ] and [ /url ] tags like we did in UBB if you want. If you are meaning something else, please clarify. For those interested, the link above on the word specify takes you to a vBulletin Community Forum page on BB Codes. Very handy.

    - I use the Forum Jump link in the lower right corner for almost all of my navigation unless I'm making a post. It's much easier as it lets me jump to the index of the current forum, jump to a new forum index, the UserCP, or just about anywhere I want.

    - A bit of tightening up may be in order, but I'm going to give them time to read over the suggestions and also finish getting things completely rolled out. I'm sure they haven't finished with the new forums, but rather are just getting started good. Remember, several of those involved in varioius parts of the forum change have left in the middle of the process (that's taken a couple of years).

    - Yeah, we complained about the signature limitations of 5 lines in the I13 Beta Forums. Either it fell on deaf ears, wasn't passed along by the people that left, or wasn't considered very important. Considering an IMG in a signature can take up more space than 5 lines of text ... yeah, that needs to be fixed.

vBulletin has many good points, some of them you just need to play with the system to find out about, or ask someone who's been tinkering with them.

    Hope this helps.
  14. You can also manually enter the codes for different things just as we did on the old UBB forums.

I have "some" formatting icons even on the Quick Reply box. I think it may have been something I changed in the UserCP.
  15. No trouble here with Firefox.

Windows XP 32-bit Service Pack 3
Firefox 3.0.12 (previously used 2.0.0.20 with same settings with no trouble)
    Extensions installed:
    AVG Safe Search 8.5
    IE View 1.4.2
    Microsoft .Net Framework Assistant 1.1
Tabbrowser Preferences 1.3.1.1 (disabled currently due to compatibility, was enabled in 2.0.0.20)
    Default theme 3.0.12
    Plugins installed:
Adobe Acrobat Plugin Version 7.00 for Netscape
    BitTorrent Plugin 1
    Citrix ICA Client Plugin (Win32)
Java 2 Platform Standard Edition 5.0 Update 2
LogMeIn, Inc. Remote Access Components 1.0.0.395
    Microsoft Office 2003
    Microsoft DRM
    Mozilla Default Plug-In
    Quick Time Plug-in 7.5.5
    RealPlayer Version Pluging 6.0.12.1739
    RealPlayer G2 LiveConnect-Enabled Plug-In (32-bit)
    Shockwave Flash 8.0 r22
    Shockwave for Director version 10.1
    Silverlight Plug-In 1..30401.0
    Windiz Update Plug-in 2.0.2006.811
    Windows Presentation Foundation

To tell the truth, I don't recall installing any plugins except for the Flash Player plugin and the Quick Time Plugin when I first installed Firefox. I may have installed the Shockwave plugin, but the rest of them look as if they likely installed automatically when I installed the associated programs, such as Jave, RealPlayer, etc.
  16. This is relating to the new forums and those that are unable to stay logged in using Firefox.

Okay, the Firefox issue is beginning to get me curious since I've had no troubles running different versions of Firefox on XP or Vista and several others have had no trouble while others have nothing BUT trouble with it. I got to thinking earlier this morning that there might be one other area having to do with Firefox that we haven't been testing, namely addons, be they themes, extensions, or plug-ins.

So, if you would, let us know the following:

OS Version (including whether 64-bit or 32-bit and Service Pack versions)
Firefox Version (click Help > About Mozilla Firefox if you aren't certain)
Installed Extensions, including version numbers if available
    Installed Themes
Installed Plug-Ins including version numbers if possible.

Maybe if we can find some common factor we can help get it fixed.

    No troubles here.

Windows Vista x64 Service Pack 2
    Firefox 3.5.1
    Extensions installed:
    Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant 1.1
    Default theme
Installed plugins (apparently installed automatically when I installed Firefox on here last night):
    Adobe Acrobat 9.1.0.163
    Java Platform SE 6 U13
Microsoft Office Live Plug-in for Firefox 2.0.3009.0
    Mozilla Default Plug-in 1.0.0.15
    Silverlight Plug-In 3.0.40723.0
    Windows Live Photo Gallery 14.0.8051.1204
    Windows Presentation Foundation 3.5.30729.1

I'll post the specs from my current Firefox installation on my XP system in another post.
  17. I'm sure Mateo would agree that it is best not to try to claim those unearned rewards to make sure that the character stays playable.

But otherwise, update the petition and play the character as you normally would, especially on this 2XP weekend.
  18. Clicked your link.

While a bit annoying (ok, a LOT annoying) I can easily see several posters using MUCH worse animated images. Heck, just look at some of the really ... hmmm ... annoying (is that safe enough?) ... animated avatars. Then expand that to a much wider screen.

I'd much rather get more control, such as being able to turn off images in Signatures only.

I have mine set to not show images, and I still see emoticons.

The only thing I lose that I miss is being able to see images directly in posts, much like Positron's recent post showing us Power Customization for I16. But, it shows up as a clickable link and if it's something I want to see it's easy to click on it and let it open in a new window (it's default behavior).

Yes, I'd still rather have more control, but I don't understand why people keep saying that turning off images (the last option) stops you from being able to see emoticons.

    That's just not true.

From what I was told a few years back when doing Tech Support for European customers of a hardware manufacturer, this sounds right. We had a couple of support people that we turned to for help in Germany and would occaisionally have long delays in responses since it was taking forever and a day for our emails or IM's to get to them.

I got to the point I missed seeing "sorry, just got the email 5 hours late" on replies when they closed down our European Support line. Of course, I missed my 4 on 4 off, 3 on 3 off schedule of 12 hour overnight shifts even more. Made it much easier to take trips from Colorado to Texas to see family without burning too many vacation days when I worked that schedule.

Aside from that they seem fine and they are much faster than before so thats great news.
Several are using Firefox with 0 problems. I've even been installing various versions on both my XP rig and my Vista rig tonight to try to duplicate issues, but haven't encountered any.

I'm normally an IE user, but I generally have some version of Firefox installed on my computers for testing purposes with various sites.

This post was entered using Firefox 3.5.1 on Vista x64 with SP2. No addons loaded in Firefox. That's about the only thing I haven't looked at tonight in my testing is different addons.

I'm hoping the problems clear up for you or that someone can figure out the common link between those having trouble and get it resolved.

No clue then. Still logged in browsing with 3.5.1 in Vista. Haven't been using my XP box but I'd imagine it's still fine as well.
  23. Phaedrus, this is not the norm. Especially for Protector and Champion to be the ones having so much trouble that they have to come down. Had it been one of the two most populated servers, maybe, but I just avoid Freedom and Virtue on general principal. I'd rather play on a slightly less populated server and not take a chance on any issues for times like this.
  24. A bit of positive feedback for a bit. Well, I may throw one negative into it, but it may just be that I haven't figured out the most efficient way to do what I'm looking for, but we'll save that for last.

The Report Post button opens a Text box that will allow you to input text to specify the reason you are reporting a post. Much better than the old Notify Moderator button IMO.

Also, that same Report Post button? Multiple users can click it and give their explanation about why they are reporting the post. Sometimes it may not be the same reason as previous users of that button. Much better than the old Notify Moderator button IMO.

The Ignore User feature works quite nicely. The one negative I'm going to put here is that it is a bit of a chore to get to where you can put someone on ignore. You either need to get to their forum profile then go through the user lists to add them to the ignore list. Or go through your UserCP and Edit Ignore List then manually type in the forum name. I inevitably spell people's forum name wrong unless I'm looking at it, since I can never remember if they have any extra lettering or _ or similar. A button to click from within their post or the section containing their forum name, avatar, etc would be much appreciated. Maybe if Castle or BAB has to fight through the Ignore process enough they can help get something changed here.
  25. Please start your own thread so that instructions aren't getting crossed. It can get really confusing when several people are involved and trying to give instructions to multiple people.

Your Video settings are going to cause major problems. Please set your ATI CCC settings and ingame video settings per those in the first post in BillZBubba's ATI Issues and Settings Recommendations thread that is stickied at the top of the forum.
