Okay, one minor gripe here, and I'm hoping someone can show me where I'm missing the option to change the setting.
The little triangle that indicates new posts disappears much too fast.
I was on the forums until rather late last night, then didn't get on them until after 5 this afternoon. Went into some of my usual forums to look for new posts, saw one and clicked the triangle, read the new posts, used the Jump menu at the bottom as usual to go to the forum index, and all the New Post trianges were gone.
No clue now what's got new posts and what doesn't, unless I start looking at the Last Post column and looking at date and times.
We need an option to be able to change how long the New Posts triange stays on a thread, with a semi-reasonable limit.
The New Posts link at the top is useless to me since it shows ALL forums, including French and German, not to mention those in forum sections I have no interest in.
Sure, I could set the Subscribed threads to email me, but that would quickly fill my email box and then it becomes almost as useless.
I'm really hoping there's a setting I'm just not seeing and that someone will point it out to me. -
Quote:Going to address just these two points.4. Need an easier way to ignore users, it's currently hidden under the unintuitive "USER LISTS" option in their profile. (Subjective: "User Lists"? Really? What a ghastly name for a menu.)
Extremely subjective:
1. Need a way to turn off JUST signature images. I want to see what people put in their posts. I don't care about their signature images. Right now, I'm forced to adblock, which means I miss out on people's links after I've adblocked the images.
You can also ignore users from your UserCP. There is a link on the left labeled Edit Ignore List. Of course, you have to manually type someone's name in the box to Add them, and if you have the memory problems I have that's not always easy.
I would much rather that they find a mod that adds an Ignore User icon into the area where a Users name and information are. Heck, they could even replace the Add Reputation icon with it. I'm wondering how soon it will be before they remove Reputation entirely, just like they did with the Stars on the old forums.
And for those of you that are worried about your Reputation, you can go into UserCP and click Edit Options to turn off the capability to Show Your Reputation. I've seen several do that already. (BTW, this was a freebie I threw in to go with the two points Aggelakis had.)
I agree that we need more control over what images we turn off. Luckily, we can uncheck the Show Images box (bottom of the three options) and turn off images in posts while still being able to see avatars, text sigs and links in sigs. If someone, such as Positron for example, makes a post with an image in it that I want to see, it will give me a clickable link instead and if I CHOOSE to see the image and click it then it opens a new window with the image only in it. I'd still prefer being able to turn off images only in sigs only, but until then this will work and doesn't need an addon that only works in certain browsers. -
Quote:From what I've been told by someone that knows vBulletin very well from having run several vBulleting forums in the past, it wasn't that simple.Oh, and writing a script to redirect URLs from the old boards would've been awesome. Oh well, I guess five years' worth of links all over the internet don't matter.
Like the idea of switching to the new forums, and I actually like the new forums, but the transition itself could've and should've gone better. Obviously it's better in the long run but it's going to be a long time before I can rebuild my link library.
For one thing, all of the links on the UBB forums referenced a post by number, and I believe they do on vBulletin as well.
The problem is that when they ported over the old forums to the new ones they were given new post numbers, so the old links didn't work. It is difficult to write a script to change the links since they need the new numbers but the posts that have the links may come in before the linked post so that the linked post may not have a number so the script gets borked. It becomes a Catch-22 situation rather quickly.
I feel for the people that have guides or other posts with links to posts that are going to have to manually find the other posts and then hand edit the links.
I'm not 100% satisfied yet with the new forums, I'm just willing to try to figure out how to do the things I want to do instead of being like some of the people in other threads that just whine and complain without trying to figure out how to do simple things. Especially when there have already been posts in the same thread telling them how to do it, or posts replying to them telling them where to look for answers.
All in all, it's another change that I can't control, so I'll do my best to adapt. -
Quote:Shame on you, bringing logic and common sense into a discussion on an internet forum.Hmmmm, I don't think they "owe" anyone anything. It would be nice, but anyone who expects an apology does not deserve to get one.
Also, though it certainly sucks to miss out on all that lovely DblXP time in AE (/sarcasm) it clearly states in the EULA that outages and other things will occur, and that they are not responsible for loss of play time as a result.

Quote:What browser are you using to post? I've been using IE8 and Firefox 3.5.1 on Vista x64 with no problems. There are some things that I like better about these boards and somethings that I really hate about them.
Editing/formatting text is much easier.
The forums log me out quite quickly. The seem to think that I'm inactive while I'm writing a post and log me out. This really is a pain.
The old forums use to crash my messages sometimes. When I'm not tired, I always do a copy-text before I try to post because even the old forums tended to lose my longer posts. (very frustrating). Now I don't only lose the post, I also am no longer logged into the forums. (Royal Pain).
If you can tweak the inactive-to-auto-log-out period, it needs to be done yesterday.
Many of us actually think about what we are posting here (I know it doesn't seem like it sometimes) and so we spend time trying to post what we mean to be saying - and that can take some time.
I too used the Select-all/Copy habit on the UBB forums due to losing long posts, and still do in some cases, but the only post I've lost so far was due to me losing my internet connection while I was typing the reply and not realizing it until AFTER I'd hit the Submit Post button. And it wasn't really a long one.
Since I use links a lot in troubleshooting posts, I often take a really long time to create my posts, and again, I've not had the problems with getting logged out.
We have a thread in the Technical Issues and Bugs forum for Firefox users, but it doesn't seem to have come up with a recognizable pattern to what is causing the problems for some but not others. -

Quote:Odd, I was on Justice during that same time frame and had no issues at all. Of course, I spent most of my time in PI and Bricks, when I wasn't in instanced missions.I'm seeing it - but only from about 7 to 9 or so central time on Justice. It's also definitely worse for some than others. I was getting annoying lag but never got logged out. Most folks in our SG weren't having any problems but one guy was getting lagged so bad he couldn't get into missions. When he would try, it would just leave him on the loading screen forever. He would still be on team and 'entering mission' for 5 or 10 minutes!
I finally logged out due to losing Internet completely for about 45 minutes or so beginning around 10:45 Central.
Of course, as you know, I'm not one that likes to team if I can help it, so didn't have others with me. -
Good to know Zloth. I thought I'd seen yellowed drivers about that old before, but I guess it's just my swiss-cheese memory.
Getting old sucks, but it sure beats the alternative. -
First, post a log from running CoH Helper as it will give information about your system and the CoH installation and settings.
Second, post a log from running HijackThis. This will show what else is going on on your computer while you are playing CoH. -
Quote:Happy to be of some assistance.Bah, all I did was post one link. Not nearly as helpful as all the useful info that TJ's posted since the new forums launched.
Speaking of, huge kudos to TJ for all the time and effort you've spent in helping folks get acclimated to the new forums. Although there are some out there who are resistant to change and haven't been all that receptive, I most certainly welcome the changes and appreciate all your help!
I've been having quite a bit of trouble sleeping of late, and rather than just lay there staring at the wall or ceiling trying in vain to get back to sleep, I've been getting on the computer a lot. That coupled with the recuperative time from the surgery at the beginning of the summer has given me LOTS of time to research things. When I can stand to sit for that long. And even then, I have the laptop in the Den and can lay down and surf the web.
The past 4 nights I've gotten "maybe" 8 hours of sleep total. I need to find something to do, and last night I used the time to dig into vBulletin somewhat.
While I am glad I can be useful to a few people, I'd still much rather have my sleep. Lack of sleep is keeping me from doing some things I'd like to since I'm afraid that it may affect me adversely and cause me to injure myself or others. Today would have been a gorgeous day to ride the motorcycle, but I just don't trust myself on it in this state.
Ah well. Hopefully once school starts back up I'll get so busy that I'll get the sleep due to pure exhaustion. -

We've long known that Statesman was a [censored]-less wonder. Sister Psyche has more [censored] than Statesman.

Kat, I'd think you'd be able to adapt more easily than many of the others.
You've worked with stuff on the Tempest Legion and Chaos Legion Forums, you've worked with stuff on DA, and no telling where else you've had forum accounts as well. Possibly on the Titan Network?
Change is often frightening to people if they go into it with a closed-minded attitude.
You've never struck me as closed-minded. -
Quote:I'd like to thank Kat in my own special way, but she's just too darn far away from me for that to work out to my liking.I would like to thank TJ for taking the time to thank Missi for thanking people.
The good news for Kat is that this way it is probably more to her liking.

Not seeing it on my end. I've seen two LCMS messages that lasted for about 5 seconds.
The rest of the time it's been smooth as glass for me. -
Quote:Most of those issues you listed at the bottom are some of the VERY reasons they went to vBulletin. Especially the post deletion control.I think the themes could use a few modifications, such as better contrast for threads with new posts (for some reason I have trouble telling if it's bolded or not, especially on the hero side). They could also tweak the theme a little so it's a bit more compact, right now it's a bit spacy. Also, I'm not a huge fan of pictures in signatures... especially the huge *** ones I've already seen a few people with.
All in all, I think it's an improvement... assuming the whole 'it freezes up for minutes at a time' issue is fixed without simply having to wipe half the posts every few days... And the post features randomly failing... And all sections under the 'Brute' section get wiped... and deleting a single post deletes 90% of the following posts... Long as all those problems are gone I'll say it's an improvement
They still have some work to do, and there are quite a few mods for them to look at to decide what will best serve their needs and the posters needs.
For now, I'll live with having Images turned off in my UserCP Options settings. I can still see emoticons (ugly as they are right now) and avatars, but I don't see the forum signature images. I can still see text sigs and links in sigs, so that's my preference.
And if someone posts something with an image in it that I want to see, I can simply click on the link in the post and open the image in a new window.
It'll get there, but it'll take some time. -
Quote:Why would they take a stuffed Barney animal to the Mental Ward?I watched my ex-neighbor now loony bin patient run over a Barny stuffed animal with their car like 10-15 times.
At the time I thought it was really funny.
About 3 weeks later, they went to the Mental Ward.

I'll ask the obvious question though. Are you using the boards.cityofheroes.com address or a different address?
Have you cleared your cookies? (However you do that on a Mac). -
Just click the small downward pointing triangle next to the thread title. That takes you to the next unread post.

Quote:Oh, they read it, they just seldom respond here.Last night, at 8 pm Eastern time on the dot, there was a massive mapserver/login server failure.
Tonight, at 8 pm Eastern time on the dot, there was a massive mapserver/login server failure.
What is happening on the west coast data center's servers, at 8 pm eastern, 5 pm pacific time that is causing this?
.. Oh, I forgot. The developers and customer service people don't post or read this forum.
Let's see, 5 PM Pacific time. Most likely the day shift is heading home, some of the equipment in the datacenters may have been rebooted to try to hold through the night until they can get back in the morning to monitor things directly.
Or it could be something at the Data center before we get to the servers themselves switching modes on their equipment that gives higher priority during business hours to the customers that are actually their main business. Someone mentioned a while back what that was, but I really didn't care so didn't bother to try to remember.
Or it could be as simple as the power company switching modes on the grid to pull more of the power away from the areas that aren't using it as much, like the business areas that shut down at 5, and that is causing an issue.
The world may never know.

Thanks MissInformed. It's very much appreciated when people take the time to thank people for the effort they are putting forth to help others.
It's been a somewhat trying day here in many ways, and this was the EXACT post I needed to see right now to make me sit back, take a deep breath, and let things run off my back like water on a duck. -
Quote:I haven't found a way to set that so that it happens automatically, even on the Enhanced Editor. But, I do get a Preview Post button next to the Submit button. They weren't better, they were just familiar. They did look nicer, I think, but they didn't function as well as they look. Once we play around in the new system and get used to it, I think people will like the new system just fine.
I do miss the option to automatically preview all posts before submitting them for real. I haven't figured out how to make that work here.
I'm learning to hate the new QR box, mostly for the things it DOESN'T provide that I prefer it doing. -
Hmmm. Something appears to have stripped out the color tags that alert us to problem areas easily.
Video drivers are very much out of date. You may want to try out the Omega Drivers here or get the Mobility Modder and the 185.85 drivers and follow the instructions on the Mobility Modder site EXACTLY to modify the drivers to work in your laptop.
Otherwise, I've no idea. I don't use that key for any binds, and unless it's bound by default to something in the game already I wouldn't even think to use it since it's a bit of a stretch for my fingers to easily reach it..
