  1. Well, after updating my CoH install on my Windows 7 32-bit install on my old computer, I set the graphics settings in game to match yours and created a new TA/Rad character on Victory. When I set it for Bright I see the blasts, when I set it for Dark I see the blasts. I still see the net for Entangling Arrow and the Ice bit for Ice Arrow, as well as seeing the projectiles as they leave the bow all the way to the target. This is all on a computer with a 6800 Ultra installed.

Maybe someone that can more closely match your setup (especially the video card and OS combination) can try to replicate this since I can't seem to.

Sorry, I'm out of ideas at this point unless someone with a more similar setup can test it.

We don't want Castle trying to replicate it on HIS computer. It's apparently ... less than stellar ... might be a good description.
  2. With all of that ... stuff ... running, I'm not surprised it timed out.

Try shutting down most of those programs that are running, including the unnecessary stuff in your system tray. Keep IE closed, since you are using IE6 and have 3 toolbars loading as well as other items that will eat system resources.

Also, which video card are you running? I see the ATI Catalyst Control Center loading as well as the nVidia Control Panel. Find out which video card you actually have, and uninstall the software from the other card. My preferred method of getting rid of the unneeded stuff is to uninstall it from the Add/Remove Programs listing in Control Panel, download and install DriverSweeper, reboot into Safe Mode, run DriverSweeper and remove ONLY the items related to the video card you don't have installed, then boot into normal mode.

Once you get the computer cleaned up a bit, try running CoH Helper again.

Also, I see that a wireless driver is loading. Are you connecting wirelessly to a router? If so, connect via ethernet cable and try running the patcher again and verify the files. If you aren't using wireless, this is another area of programs to shut down.
  3. Well, the only thing I can see, not having a current gen nVidia card, is that the driver isn't the newest. The 190.62 WHQL driver was released August 21.

can't remember for certain, but it seems that others were reporting some kind of problem with the 190.38 driver. Hopefully, someone that has a similar card and setup can try to replicate it. I can't come close to that with my ancient 6800 Ultra, even running Windows 7. The system just won't handle that high of a graphic setting. Well, at least not enough for me to consider it even slightly playable.

As for the earlier supposition that it might be caused by the Suppress FX When Close setting, this would be negated with a new character being created, as you noted the TA/Rad concept being new. That setting is Disabled by default, even on new characters, and loses it's settings fairly regularly on the same character.

EDIT: Well, I'm going to try to get as close to your video settings as I can with my antique 6800 Ultra. Albeit, it's on a Windows 7 32-bit system. Luckily, I have the 190.38 driver installed already. I'll report back once it's finished downloading the updates and I can test it.
  4. Yes it was. And it has served me quite well since I bought it. Alas, now it is relegated to my test machine.
  5. First, post a log from running CoH Helper as it will give information about your system and the CoH installation and settings.

Second, post a log from running HijackThis. This will show what else is going on on your computer while you are playing CoH.
  6. Actually, BayBlast has never struck me as being sarcastic or bitter.

I see nothing snarky or biting in his comment.

TJ would be your friend, but he doesn't do friendships well.

(yes, TJ was being sarcastic with that last line, but not bitter)

Um... I paid $685 for my 6800 Ultra when it came out.

    Just sayin'.
  8. I'll leave the recommendations to others.

As for how to transfer the game to the new computer? I'd recommend this post for instructions.
  9. Have you tried clicking the Verify Files button?

We'd also need more information about your installation and computer to be able to offer any accurate advice.

Like we said, http://boards.cityofheroes.com/ we are logged off, but...
    http://boards.cityofheroes.com/index.php I am logged in.

Aha, that is possibly why I am seeing that discrepancy. My Vista and Win7 64-bit systems are set to use the UserCP page as my homepage. On my XP and Win7 32-bit system, I was simply going to boards.cityofheroes.com and getting the page showing I wasn't logged in.

When I bookmarked the UserCP page on my Win7 32-bit system and then opened Firefox and went to that link, it remembered me.

Ok, now my curiosity is abated somewhat. I have nothing more to contribute.

I opened a ticket with NC support but I don't know if anyone is going to be looking at this anytime this weekend.
Interesting. I get the same reaction here on Firefox on my Windows 7 32-bit system. Opening the site it doesn't know who I am, but when I click on Development is has me logged in.

    Curioser and curioser.

It's even odder that my IE8 and Firefox on Vista 64-bit remember who I am and keep me logged in even after closing the browser and re-opening it. My Windows 7 64-bit system keeps me logged in as well after closing the browser.
  12. Very odd indeed. After installing Firefox 3.5.3 on my XP system, it refuses to let me log in. Well, that's not exactly correct. It will let me log on, welcomes me to the forum, then takes me back to the main page not being logged in. I've cleared Everything in my History and it will let me log in and stay logged in, even having checked Remember Me when I logged in. Until I close the browser that is. After that, if I re-open the browser I get taken to the main page as not being logged in.

As stated in my previous post, it isn't doing this on my Vista system or my Windows 7 system using either IE8 or FF 3.5.3 as the browser. Very curious.

Hmmm. Both the Vista and Windows 7 system I tested on are 64-bit versions. I'll load up the 32-bit Windows 7 installation on the other computer and see how it does.

EDIT: Okay. Getting the same thing on my Windows 7 32-bit install that I got on my XP system. Surely this isn't a 32-bit vs 64-bit problem. Anyone having the problems on a 64-bit OS?
  13. My guess would be that the common factor between all of you is either XP or IE7.

IE8 isn't doing this for me. Firefox isn't doing this for me. Vista isn't doing this for me. Windows 7 isn't doing this for me.

Currently, I'm only getting it on XP and IE7. I had uninstalled Firefox on that computer when I replaced a drive and haven't reinstalled it yet. Once I get it reinstalled I'll test it, but only with the newest version of Firefox. That should tell us whether it is an XP specific item or an IE7 specific item.
  14. Not sure what the difference is, but I'm still not seeing it. I realized after reading these posts that I'd lowered my graphics settings for a Hami Raid last night, so I set them back to normal just to make sure that it wasn't the lowered settings allowing me to see the blasts.

Same results as my previous posts. I see the blasts as they leave the body. I see the net on the Entangling Arrow, and I see it in flight. I see the small Ice piece on Ice Arrow, and I see it in flight.

Maybe if you post a CoH Helper it will let us see what your settings are to try to duplicate it. Or to see if it is an issue with a particular driver or video card.
  15. Odd. After seeing your post, I created a TA/Rad Defender just to see what happened.

I had 0 problems with seeing the powers. I see all of the blasts as they leave the body, on the way to the target, then the Hit effect. With Ice Arrow I see a small piece of Ice, which is what I'm used to seeing, but I can't see the block of ice on the Hit effect since it is offscreen. With Entangling Arrow, I see the net on the arrow before firing, I see it during flight to the target, but don't see the net on the Hit effect since it is offscreen. With the rad blasts, everything looks as it should.

I'm not sure what is/was causing the problem you experienced, but I can't replicate it here.

    Sorry.

Yes, please. There were some things in the previous CoH Helper that caught my attention, but I wouldn't want to comment on them without seeing current information from running them again.

You have to realize, BAB is from Justice. He's crazy to start with.

And by Obsidius' logic, I must be right since my join date predates his.

  18. D'oh! Something just clicked for me. You are running Windows 7 and have the game installed to the Program Files directory. Vista and Windows 7 have some problems due to virtualization, as well as needing Administrator rights for certain things like Updates and tries to protect the end user.

You can read a bit about it in Zloth's ++ Common Solutions and Posting Guidelines ++ thread that is stickied in this forum. Specifically, look at the section on Installation Issues and the one on Missing Files.

I keep forgetting about this since I NEVER install a game to the Program Files directory in ANY OS, unless the installer is so poorly written that it won't let you install to any other directory. All of my computers have a Games directory where I install games. It depends on what drives I have in the computer as to what drive it is on, but the directory name is always Games.

That just makes it an issue coincidental to chatlogging on your system. I have chatlogging on and do not have this issue. I know of several other people that have chat logging on and aren't having this issue. It's an odd coincidence, but it seems to be an issue solely on your system.
  20. One of the problems I foresee is based off of the poor support ATI has had for quite some time with OpenGL. Those problems can better be explained by Bill Z Bubba, but they are the reason ATI users currently need to tweak down some settings or use the CCC to control other settings. Things such as Bloom, Depth of Field, Water Effects, Anti-Aliasing, Anisotropic Filtering, and all of the other fun things that are problematic with ATI driversl
  21. Chat logging has nothing to do with it. If it did, we'd have thousands of people with this problem. I'd be one of them.

My first recommendation would be to adjust your CCC and in-game video settings to those listed in the first post of Bill Z Bubba's stickied ATI Issues and Settings Recommendations thread. A?I still hasn't written a driver that will correct several problems they have with OpenGL.

Also, your sound driver installation is corrupt, as evidenced by the faulty date.

There have been a few video drivers released since the ones you have. There was a Catalyst 9.7 WHQL driver released in July that I've had no trouble with using an HD4850. The Cat 9.8 and 9.9 have been released as well, but neither was WHQL'd from what I can find. You can get the 9.7's at www.guru3d.com in the Downloads section.

The short version of the ingame video settings is as follows:

    Turn off Vertical Sync
    Turn off Anisotropic Filtering
    Turn off Bloom
    Turn off Depth of Field
Turn down World Detail to High

I would also recommend shutting down mirc and your Octoshape Streaming client while you are trying to get this sorted out. You may want to shut down Steam as well to make sure it isn't something with the Steam service causing the issues. I know that there were some issues with Steam a while back, but don't recall all of the specifics.

As much of a BABs fan as I am, I must point out that Castle is the one you quoted and that has come in here and discussed this issue.
  23. That won't do you any good. Most stores won't take back unopened software, especially if it's got a license key that has been used.

Why not just look at the things that have been listed and correct those, and then post the data that was requested without coloring it?

Sorry, the bolded and colored part above is what confused me.

I still think something is "stuck" in your settings and you need to set it to something different, zone, reset it to what you want it to be and zone again to see if it sticks.

As for street sweeping, mobs generally spawn in relation to team size and close to the level of the team, even if it's a solo team, as long as they are of an appropriate level for the zone. Also, many zones have sections that spawn only specific levels in specific areas so that those toward the bottom end of the zones level range have something appopriately levelled to fight. However, someone slightly higher level could have passed through the area and they spawned in relation to that player that came through first.

All in all, since I'm not seeing the same thing on my missions, and no one else seems to be reporting a problem with it, I still think it's something "stuck" in your settings.
  25. Something that may help is to type /unloadgfx before zoning into missions.
