  1. Well, howdy there Tex.

Been seeing your posts, but I don't remember your name being red previously.

Another Texan here, as if it weren't obvious from the forum name and location, but southeast of Bill down on the Gulf Coast.

As Bill said, welcome to the nuthouse.
  2. The queue is for once you select the server, not during the update.

As I've said in other posts, yes, having so many people downloading this at the same time slows down the connection.

We've also seen in the past that one of the servers or switches before you get to the Update server uses bandwidth throttling so that our downloads are not bogging down their other business customers. They didn't seem to do this for a long time, so I'm not sure if it's due to a change in some of the routing or just complaints from their other customers causing them to implement this bandwidth throttling.
  3. Seems as if everyone is on Training Room 02 with 3 red dots. I'm #1 in the queue.

Only 1 green dot on Training Room.

Edit: And of course, I post this and get in.
  4. Yes, I'd imagine there are hundreds, if not thousands, of players trying to download the Test Server client.

You don't mention whether you are downloading EU test client, so I can't comment on whether it's affected by something Avatea commented on yesterday in this section.

If you are trying to download the US test client, be aware that the path to the updater goes through other people's servers and they put caps on the bandwidth so that it doesn't adversely affect their other clients when so many people are trying to download.
  5. He may have disabled that, given your comments about his fears of downloading.

How does he get over those fears when the game updates and he has to download the patches?
  6. We also use the -test switch to connect to the Test Server.

We also use a switch to bypass the updater.

We've been told about a totally unsupported switch to enable SLI on nVidia graphics cards. We haven't been told the unsupported switch to enable Crossfire support for ATI cards.

Many in beta had to use a switch to get a cursor until this latest patch.

They removed the need for the switch to use both cores.

To answer the question posed by the title of the post, yes. To answer the specific question asked in the OP, no.
  7. Make sure Windows is fully up to date. If it's Vista, he should be on Service Pack 2. Many problems disappeared with SP2.

    Update the video drivers.

    Update the video drivers.

    Update the video drivers.

If he won't update Windows and the video drivers, ask him to donate his computer to a worthy charity since he's trying to use 21st century technology but acts like he's in the 3rd century.

There must be magic in that box, and that's the Devil's work you know.

Also got neg rep for "Talking about people getting into cb" :P Sorry, neg rep makes me lol, as in people in random threads "leaking" their nr.
I just wish they'd make it easy for us to keep track of rep comments again. I keep having to dig through posts months old to find out what comments my stalker has been making to lower my rep. They are apparently afraid to make it on recent posts, although it's obvious I make too many posts as it is.

Oh, and Tamaki, you might not think it's nitpicking so much if you go back and read all of that person's previous posts. When you have a sense of their posting history, you spot the histrionics easily.

I promised myself I wouldn't respond directly to your posts after reading your posting history, but this level of exaggeration is too much.

I17 went into Closed Beta on March 2. Today is April 14. That's 1 month and 12 days. Not even a month and a half. Nowhere near "almost going on 2 months long now" unless you really stretch the definition of the word "almost". If it had been over a month and a half, I might be able to see using that phrase. If it had been a month and 20 days (or more), sure I'd say it was close to accurate. But 1 month and 12 days isn't even close.

Check your facts before you post such blatantly overblown exaggeration.

    Wrong.

    Joe's not that tall.
  11. Something else to consider about those numbers. A hardware manufacturer I used to work for coded the retail model numbers for some products based on who the retailer was, and the version in our online store had a different ending number. The standard retail package sent to the majority of vendors had no ending tag number at all, similar to the XL2370 version.

It made it relatively easy to tell where people had purchased the products from, and what specials may have been offered on them, based on the ending -xx of the model number. Also, some retailers had a different warranty system in place and it gave us information about that as well.

    Long load times

Right-click on the shortcut to launch CoH and click the Compatibility tab. The ONLY thing that should be checked is Run As Administrator. Make sure it is not running in a compatibility mode for XP or any other Windows version.

Also, you have a lot of unneeded programs running at startup. Looking at the O4 entries in your HiJackThis log shows several programs that just aren't needing to be running all the time such as the Java Update Scheduler, Adobe Speed Launcher, QuickTime Task, iTunesHelper, ImpulseNow, Limewire, DiVX Updater, vmware tray, rockstar games social club, yahoo messenger, windows live messenger, ign downloader, steam.

None of these HAS to run when Windows starts, they should load when you launch the program and unload fully when you close them. Several of them are using bandwidth and could be causing some of the slowdowns you are seeing.

All that being said, I'm not a fan of inline upgrades. I've seen too many odd problems pop up over the years when doing this type of install instead of a clean install. This could be one of those instances.
  13. Posts by theOcho show up in the Community Digest.
Posts by Moderator 08 don't show up there.

Most times they really don't want to bring unneeded attention to some of the moderation. Or as theOcho puts it, different tools for different jobs.

    Random Scenes

I've seen it but didn't really know what to make of it since I can't reproduce it consistently.

It doesn't seem like latency or dropped packets since the image that flashes up is sometimes 10 to 15 minutes old.

I get it at times coming out of missions, and since I tend to spend more time in the mission than a lot of people, any scenes from outside should have been well and truly flushed from the graphics buffer by then. But nope, I'll get a flash of a scene where I'm in WW or at the tram or just standing outside and then it's gone. I've gotten it as I start to log off as well, which is really odd.

I wish it were more consistent so that I could give the programmer's something to scratch their heads over. Guess I'll have to take more detailed notes. I'm on Windows 7 64-bit running a 1 Gb version of the HD4850 and the 10.1 drivers.

    Thinking of...

From what we've been told by Positron, your 5770 should have little trouble with UM.

I'm not sure you are getting that much more performance increase for the price with this upgrade. Maybe a 5970, but that's an order of magnitude more in cost.

    No disagreements with XFX.
  16. Another possible source of the problem may be an invalid DNS entry in the cache. The first time you connect, it is asking your DNS source to resolve it. Subsequent connection attempts are likely looking in the DNS cache.

Click the start button, type in "command" without the quotes, right-click it and select Run As Administrator. When the command prompt pops up type "ipconfig /flushdns" without the quotes and hit enter. Make sure you put the space between ipconfig and /flushdns.

Of course, UAC may throw up a few prompts in the middle of this, just click Yes on them.

As for the updater coming up after you quit, yes, that's the pre-download for I17 running. Happens shortly before most updates are rolled out to get the biggest parts of the download out of the way. And it will do this even if you exit during the countdown. I normally select the Quit to Desktop option and click the Exit button to get me out faster, the updater pops back up and starts the pre-download.
  17. Sorry Bobi. Sounds like you got bit by the same 8800 bug that several Justice players have been hit with in the past year.

I'd have gone with an ATI 5850 myself, but ... whatever floats your boat.

As a side note, somewhere there is a video or something showing how to resurrect some of the 8800's but it involves putting it in an oven. I thought it was in a thread on Justice, but it was from back in August, September or October so I can't recall for certain.

Pum, Arwen, Uber or Quat may recall where it was.

This tuesday being the day in which OB starts. This gives us two weeks to test it in OB. Then a release date of the 27th.

Anyone else think this is plausible?
    Plausible? Sure.

    Possible? Could be.

Probable? Only the Devs know for sure.

According to this announcement, it is guaranteed CB access for Veteran status, Loyalty program, and pre-orders (would be pre-purchase now it seems).

It seems odd that the HeroCon attendees that signed up for GR CB access aren't listed there, since this announcement came out some time before the other one. It lists this as guaranteed CB access as well.
  20. Thug Two,

It means you haven't received your email. It's still Closed Beta. If you don't see the CB forums on this page, send a PM to Avatea or theOcho to have them enable your forum access.
  21. Is something like this what you are looking for?
  22. I notice you are using COMODO Internet Security. I remember something from a while back about someone having problems with the firewall and CoH. Their solution was to disable the firewall entirely, but that seems a bit drastic.

Does COMODO have any way to set exceptions or allowed programs? If so, set everything you can from the CoH directory to be allowed. If it will allow you to set a directory to be unmonitored or allowed, I'd set the entire directory.

A simple test to see if it's causing the problems might be to temporarily disable the firewall and see if the problem still occurs. If it does, then explore how to configure it to not interfere with CoH. If not, then the problem is likely elsewhere. Note that I said likely. I've seen a few firewall programs over the years that even though you set them to Off still interfered with things until you actually uninstalled them. Usually, it was part of a security suite instead of a standalone firewall.

As a side note, even if you've set an exception or allowance in the past, updates to COMODO may be over-riding those settings, or more likely the changes to the updater have caused COMODO to not recognize it as the same program you have allowed. Usually, removing and re-adding the program to the allow list fixes this behavior.
  23. 'm assuming your old PC was a desktop and not a laptop. Laptop graphics cards aren't generally as powerful as Desktop video cards. The 4300 would be well towards the lower end of the 4000 series of cards.

Since it's an ATI card, I'll recommend setting your Catalyst Control Center and in-game graphics settings to those in the first post of Bill Z Bubba's stickied ATI Issues and Settings Recommendations thread. It's a good baseline, and after reading Bill's explanations for WHY some of those settings are where they are, it will give you a good spot to start tweaking from.
  24. That would be the 28th, not the 27th. Game launched on April 28, 2004.
