Quote:My college was still using punch cards when I started in the fall of '80. I started working in the college computer lab and learned that they were going to be switching systems and going to VAX system with terminals. I delayed taking COBOL until the terminals were in place.Going off topic here - I took computer science in college back in the early 80's, working with PL1, COBOL and Assembly. They started us out on using punch cards. How things have changed
.
I'd seen several frantic people rushing to beat a deadline drop their punch cards coming up to the Batch Desk to get them run. Dropping the punch cards for a 100 to 200 line program less than half an hour before class started caused much weeping and wailing.
We had a few VT-100 terminals that hardly anyone used when I got there as they were only running BASIC and were a little klunky to use. There was also a 132-character width line printer/keyboard terminal hooked to a 300 baud coupled modem that I'd occaisionally dial into a few BBSs with. Almost no one wanted to use that system. I printed lots and lots of ASCII art back then.
They didn't offer PL1 but I'd forgotten about taking an Assembly course. -
Quote:I remember seeing one. Once.I had a Colecovision Adam. Tape drive. Ginormous printer. It came with Buck Rogers, which I still remember because the alien spaceships looked like fried eggs. It also had no memory, so every awesome 20 line program I made in BASIC had to be recreated every single time. And of course, the fact that I could play all of my Colecovision games on it was nice.
I never met anyone else who ever had one. :-(
I think I still have it in storage somewhere.
PS: Beginner'a All Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code, COmmon Business-Oriented Language, Programming Language 1.
Mathematical FORmula TRANslation System, Report Program Generator (I think the version I learned was RPG IV, but it's been mumblemumblemumble years since I had it in college).
Those two, along with BASIC, COBOL and Pascal were the foreign languages (yes, that's my name for them) in college.
I did branch out a bit over the years by dabbling in and/or tinkering with QBASIC, Tiny BASIC, Altair BASIC, Turbo BASIC, Apple BASIC, Apple Business BASIC, Applesoft BASIC (based on the same Microsoft code as Commodore BASIC), Commodore BASIC (aka CBM BASIC), Color BASIC, DEC BASIC (started when it was still called VAX BASIC), Sinclair BASIC, TI BASIC (for the TI-99/4A), TI Extended BASIC (for the TI-99/4A), TI-BASIC (for TI programmable calculators), TRS-80 Level I BASIC, TRS-80 Level II BASIC, VBScript, Visual BASIC for Applications (VBA), ZBasic and possibly some other minor variants I've forgotten over the years. -
I don't recall his exact wording but it was pretty much what we've been told in the past. Within the context of what the game engine and animation system can do it is very difficult to do something like whips or chains so new ones aren't likely. Same thing we've been told by the animators that have to work with the game engine and animation system in the past. Same thing we've been told by others in the art team in the past. Same thing we've been told by anyone that's actually seen the capabilities and limitations of the game engine and animation system used.
I can't recall exactly how it was worded previously, but I remember someone saying it took more time and work to implement the whip attacks in Demon Summoning than it did for any other full powerset. Just the whip attacks. That's not counting all of the work on the Demons themselves.
I tend to accept the word of those that have actually worked with the game engine, powers systems and animation systems than that of anyone that hasn't done so.
If you want to hear his answer you can view it on their Twitch.TV page or on their YouTube page and hear his wording for yourself. It was one of the first questions asked and was somewhere around 42 or 43 minutes into the chat.
For the Twitch.TV link, click the videos tab on that page and it's listed by the date.
I've looked at their Careers page and they don't currently have any postings for Animators. From what I've been told in the past, they don't have non-employees doing powers design, animations, writing, or much of anything else. -
Quote:Those that have seen the code would likely disagree with you.
I really do think this is possible it should not be hard to code the system to work that way.
Those that have listened to what the Developers have told us about the base code would likely disagree with you. -
I'm not sure what you were pinging, but it isn't one of the game servers. I think it's one of the OpenDNS servers.
All of the games live servers are located in Texas now and have been for some time.
Your Trace is going to some place in Washington and I'll guess that is Washington D.C. due to the previous hop being New York. If it were Washington state I'd expect a few hops through Chicago and possibly Denver. -
After hearing Arbiter Hawk's comments about whips in today's Twitch.TV Coffee Talk I don't expect to see anything more than the one existing powerset to do with whips.

Quote:Glad no one mentioned any of that earlier in the thread... *cough*, *cough*, *cough*....
I saw it. You just didn't go into much detail.
Since Rajani did start to go into detail, I wanted to expand on it a bit.
And since I'd seen your post already, I didn't mention the Mac bit since you'd already covered it.
I wasn't posting it based on some Warboss WHIM after all.

Quote:And since Rajani left off the rest of the steps and wasn't really clear on that last one ...To post a build on the forums -
- Go to CoHTitan.com
- Download Titan Sentinal
- Run it when you COH
- after you log into the character switch to Sentinal and choose "export Data" - long form is the easy to read version, IIRC.
- after you log into the character switch to Titan Sentinel.
- On the menu bar click Tools then click Utilities. Click the Export button. (There are no options for setting it to long or short form in Titan Sentinel, only in Mids.)
- Log in to the forums and come back to this thread
- Click the New Reply button at the bottom of the thread
- Right-click in the editing box and select Paste. You'll see something like this:

It's easier if you install Mids Hero Designer however, as you can export data in a format that is easy to read by anyone, similar to what Hyperstrike posted above.
If you want to use Mids (a really handy character builder and planner) after you have it installed, do these steps:
- Follow the instructions listed above about how to use Titan Sentinel.
- After you click the Export button in Titan Sentinel, open Mids
- Click Import / Export on the toolbar
- Select Import from Forum Post and click OK through any popup dialogs.
- Now you'll be able to look at the build in Mids and see your powers, slots and what is slotted where
- Click Import / Export from the toolbar again
- Select Short Forum Export and click Export. You'll get a message that it's been put onto your clipboard so just click OK.
- Come back to this thread and click New Reply
- Right-click in the editing box and select Paste.
- Click the Submit Reply button and you'll see a post similar to the one Hyperstrike posted above.
It will be easy then for anyone to read and offer advice on improving your build.
EDIT: To get Titan Sentinel and/or Mids (I recommend both) just go to the Titan Network site at http://www.cohtitan.com/ and you will find links to download both programs at the top of the page. You can also register a Titan Key so that you can post on the forums there and log in to the various parts of the site but it isn't required in order to get these programs. -
No problems here on 3 different computers.

On the Beta server you have to "purchase" the sets from the Market before you can use them.
The cost is 0 and the Beta server isn't tied to your payment info.
I'd still recommend waiting for the download/install to finish completely. -
The Market doesn't have a way to hide what you already own.
In most cases, it won't let you buy things you already have, although I've heard of people buying things that were in a pack that now are separate or having bought things separate that are now in a bundle.
I haven't run into that issue, so can't say for certain.
As for the Roman costume parts, yes, if you buy them you would be able to use them at character creation and not have to wait at least 35 levels to be able to get them from running the ITF.
Just as buying the cape unlock or aura unlock will unlock those at creation instead of having to run missions at 20 and 30 to use them. -

At times the forum software and the account system don't sync so it sets you as VIP. It's generally a temporary thing.

Is your system set to a different Date format other than MM/DD/YYYY by any chance?
That usually happens with non US installation setups or when someone has changed the Date format on purpose.
The reason I ask is because of how the Driver date is shown as 1.1.0001 0:00:00
If you aren't using a different date format or a non US installation setup, your video driver installation may be corrupted.
Without being able to see things like the date format on the Sound Card drivers it's difficult to tell which it is. If the Sound Card drivers have the same date format, it usually means it's a formatting thing. If the Sound Card drivers don't show the same date format and odd date/time, then it means the video card driver installation is corrupted, which could explain your font issues.
Remember, when changing drivers (especially ATI drivers and especially with older video cards) be sure to uninstall the drivers and associated software in normal Windows mode, run Driver Sweeper in Windows Safe Mode to remove the left over remnants of the installation and then install the drivers in normal Windows mode. -
I didn't see Forbin saying anything about it being Complete (forum violation). I do see him asking a lot of questions, some for clarification of what you meant.
How can we think of the playstyle when your post doesn't really talk about a playstyle, it's just a bunch of vaguely worded thoughts about powers.
If we see no pros to a suggestion but see many cons, how are we supposed to follow your rules of how to post?
If there is nothing to compliment (yes, compliment, not complement), again, we can't follow your rules.
If the idea is full of holes, what reason is there for "making the person that came up with the idea fell a little better"? (By the way, it's feel, not fell, but I left your poor spelling intact since I was quoting you.) -
The only time I have that come up is when I am not logged in.
Logging in makes the image verification go away. -
No, your tanks didn't get nerfed. Unless you are Johnny Butane.
As your teammates told you, different enemies will affect your characters differently. Some Carnival of Shadows attacks can lower your Defense, HP Regeneration and Endurance Recovery. Some do Psychic damage which you may or may not have resistances to.
The best solution would be to use Titan Sentinel to export your current build into Mids Hero Designer and post the build on the forum. There are plenty of helpful people that can help you improve your build and possibly plug some holes in it or just improve your overall effectiveness and survivability. -
No need to slipstream SP1, just download the official Windows 7 ISO from Digital River.
Slipstreaming IE9 into the Windows 7 SP1 installation media.
EDIT: Slipstreaming Service Packs isn't as easy as it was in the XP days. There are some third party tools that allow you to slipstream Service Packs, Updates and more, but IMO it's simpler just to download the official installation files. -
Quote:The thing is, we already have a live feed going on from an event they are running that is open to all players (both the event itself and the live feed), and you even acknowledged that it's a good way to keep players involved.I never said I was excluding others from live feed's, but I put my neck on the line from a potential torrent of abuse, others had the chance to chip in and say I agree or what not and that they would like that sort of thing in their area too, but no-one did. I based my argument on my own personal preferences.
So what I should have done is included everyone else in my argument without even asking their permission?
So when you ask for a live feed specifically for an EU summit it sounds as if you don't want others to be able to participate in it. Or you want something catering to your specific desires instead of the CoH community as a whole.
Many players have in the past asked for events in more areas and we've been given answers as to why that doesn't happen and isn't really likely to happen. Since nothing appears to have happened that might change those reasons it seems pointless to keep bringing it up over and over and over.
I've attended every Bay Area event that I've been able to, and will in the future, even though it's not something that is easy for me to do financially. I know others that have traveled to these events as well that have had to make difficult financial decisions in order to go. I've known of players coming in from New Zealand, Australia and even Great Britain for those events.
When NCSoft had events in Austin I attended those as it was a short 3-hour drive to get there (in Texas driving terms a 3-hour drive is a short to medium length trip). I know of others that made longer drives than that, some that came from out-of-state as well as those that were closer to or in Austin.
When NCSoft stopped having events in Austin (or at least they stopped being advertised) I didn't blame Paragon Studios since they weren't the ones making the decision.
I also don't blame any other decisions I don't agree with made by NCSoft on Paragon Studios. I prefer to put the blame where it belongs, just as I do in the rest of my life. -
Quote:So you want a live feed just to the EU? Something that would shut out the other players? Very nice of you. As it is, ANYONE with internet access can view the live feeds from the Players Summit and submit questions or comments.Zwillinger, I appreciate the live feed's they are excellent way to keep us somewhat involved, but what I would prefer is a live feed to the EU via a summit of our own. I pretty much enjoy the company of others when breaking news happens and would rather watch a big game with others rather than sit at home and watch it by myself, if you get my drift. New issue news surrounded by friends with a good atmosphere can't be beat.
But you want to have something going as an EU Summit so that other players are there? Then organize an EU event when there is a Player Summit planned. Have computers and monitors set up so that people can interact with the Player Summit while surrounded by friends.
If you contact Paragon Studios and let them know you are organizing something along that line I'm pretty sure they'll find a way to participate and may even find some schwag to ship over. -
Quote:Was this an issue having to do with something the CS team was handling?I stated that on the one time I felt the need to communicate with Paragon over a matter that I had a grievance with has still been unanswered (checks e-mails) a little over 10 months later.
Something the Accounts or Billing team was handling?
Something the Tech Support team was handling?
Guess what all of those teams have in common?
They aren't part of Paragon Studios.
They are part of NCSoft and are, to the best of my knowledge, still handled out of the NCSoft offices in Austin, TX.
Since you mentioned checking your email for a response it seems more like something those departments handle. The OCR team usually replies by PM from my experiece over the past 8 plus years.
Was it something to do with how the forums work? That's the Seattle web team that handles the configurations and management of the forum software.
Was it something to do with the CoH website? Again, that's the Seattle web team.
Was it something to do with forum moderation? The OCR team handles that. I have yet to ask about a forum moderation issue and not get some type of response. Even when no response was required I've gotten an acknowledgement of my PM.
Was it something to do with game design and/or implementation? That's the Dev team and they don't always answer every PM they get. They'd have no time to work on the game if they did. -
Incorrect.
That was NCSoft.
As in NCSoft Europe which is what they called that division if I remember correctly.
Much like they referred to the Seattle location as NCSoft West.
Much like they originally referred to Paragon Studios as NCSoft NorCal (NCNC or NC²).
That division was deemed by NCSoft to be unprofitable so it was closed.
The game studio now known as Paragon Studios had nothing to do with the decision to close the NCSoft Europe division.
That decision was made by NCSoft's corporate offices.
Much like the decisions for how to handle naming collisions was made by the NCSoft database administrators, not the Paragon Studios game designers or OCR team.
Your blame is misplaced.
