You can pick one of these babies up cheap on ebay for about ~$35: http://www.netgear.com/Products/Prin...s/WGPS606.aspx
It's handy for connecting wired and usb devices remotely. I've connected an xbox (running xbmc) to it and streamed movies through 3 walls and about 70 feet without a problem. -
Quote:Freedom, Virtue or Justice are the top servers, with Virtue being the RP server and Freedom the new PVP server as well. PVP is strictly optional, but all of the pvpers consolidated there.I haven't decided on a server yet, I assume my best choice is between the previously mentioned Freedom or Justice, with one of the two being more of a RP server.
There's plenty of PvE content, plus (and I'm surprised no one mentioned this) there's the Mission Architect, which houses player-made content. While most of the game is soloable, teaming develops true synergies that make combat phenomenal. There are missions that are just fun (for examnple, Frostfire in the hollows) which you can play again and again with different team compositions and have totally different experiences.
Difficulty level settings vary. There's your typical level 1-54 baddies. In your instanced missions, you can set the difficulty to be anywhere from -1 to +8 your level. Then there's sidekicking and some event-scaling code that is balanced for level 30 content. While the former 2 are self-explanatory, the latter two, not so much.
Sidekicking basically scales up (or down) everyone in the team to the leader's or the mission holder's level. If you scale down, you get the level you're at + 5 levels worth of powers. This scaling is used in the flashback system as mentioned previously. Event-scaling code sounds a bit wierd but here's an example: every so often there is an alien invasion of a zone and the aliens can be attacked by anyone, conning within range regardless if you're levels 50, 30 or level 1. Of course, the higher levels will be far more effective given the breadth powers and slotting enhancements but anyone can take part.
Finally, when you do hop into the game, don't be afraid to tell people you're new (although the vets will likely be looking at your badges and figuring that out too ; ' ). Still, you'll find many people will offer to help you out and familiarize you with the game if you do introduce yourself.
Welcome to the game! ( ' : -

I'm pretty sure it was said somewhere that pre-orders would be available March 3rd...

Not really a "fun" topic per se, but one worthy of thinking about.
As many have probably heard, Cryptic has had a poor track record these past few months with....client relations, most recently with a special STO deal that allegedly got pulled. That's not what I want to discuss, so no details about it, please.
My question and concern is, with Paragon Studio's licensing the Cryptic engine, what happens if Cryptic flames out? Does CoX have a fixed number of years for the license? What happens if Cryptic resells the engine to another company? Can CoX become collateral damage as a result of Cryptic's own distribution and marketing mistakes, or even their desperation or spite? -
If the pre-purchase cost is being deducted from the final purchase price of the upgrade, then indeed it is a perk or a bonus, but not a tax. ( ' :

Quote:So don't buy the upgrade version, simple enough. Why all the angst? That's not the whole story though.

In summary:
Digital only: $29.99
Compete edition: $39.99
You're right so far that the complete costs more because it's the entire game. But let's look at what else the differences are.
Complete has: 30 days of game time, physical perks like DVD and poster, in-game perks like bonus outfits and emotes, and the original CoH/CoV.
Digital has: Early access to DP/DS.
You can do digital now, and then buy the in-game perks later. The assumption is that it'll be $9.99, meaning:
Digital+pack: $39.98
Complete: $39.99
Complete still has 30 days of game time (value: $14.99), the original CoH/CoV, and physicals like DVD, poster, and whatnot. Complete is the better value by far, because you get 30 days of game time free. But if you want early access to DP/DS, you can't buy this version. You have to go ditigal+pack, and end up paying the same amount to get less product.
The only advantage to digital+pack is that you get early access. Which means early access is NOT a "little bonus," because we have to lose out on a free 30 days and physical perks to get it. That means we aren't getting early access for free, as a perk, or a thank you; we're paying at least $15 for it.
Now this doesn't bother me that much, but I can see why people are upset. I doubt it's some malicious plan to try and steal our money, but it does leave one scratching one's head.
The complete version is selling an account ACTIVATION code, which by its nature, includes 30 days. Even though you can use ACTIVATION codes to pad your subtime, that's not the intention of it, and if anything, all this griping might make sense to preclude that from ocurring. As for the physical stuff, a lot of games sell physical and digital copies for the same price -- it's up to the person if they want either one so that's a wash.
I'll say it again though: if you feel the complete version is a better deal in your eyes, then don't buy the upgrade. It's not like existing players are forced through only one channel and new subscribers another... -
Quote:This is such an obnoxious post, accusing Paragon and NCsoft of stooping to Roper-tactics. This isn't difficult, really -- an upgrade for the game is 10 dollars cheaper than buying the entire game (29.99 versus 39.99) and its not different from any other company's marketing multiple skus for a product. Oh, and btw, as a bit of a loyalty reward for existing account holders, you can pre-order the upgrade with the little bonus of early access to the new powers. When did NCsoft hire Bill Roper?
A very "Cryptic" post if ever there was one (drum roll-boom tish, etc)
Now is the time NCsoft should be going all out to get more subscribers by advertising, etc NOT by trying to squeeze the LOYAL players for extra bucks by making em fork out lots of cash cos they choose to run multiple accounts and have stuck with the game all this time.
Do they not read the CO forums? cos there was a royal shitstorm over their "paid" expansion and Cryptic ended up with their tale between their legs.
Not enough info or posts on here anymore, well we will remember when they bring out CoH 2
The drama over this is mind-boggling. -
On a more serious note, for those griping about no pre-order for the complete collection, consider this paradox in advertising:
If you pre-order the GR complete collection and you can start playing DP and DS heroes now.....how are brand new players supposed to take advantage of this offer when they can't create an account because the key isn't available until they pick up the box in July....
So, the early access can only be for the expansion...unless something unique and cool is offered for people who pre-purchase the complete expansion.....

That would be fun actually -- the door blowing inward and there is mirrorverse Fusionette, capable and level-headed, ready to lead you to safety!

This will be tricky...that's anniversary weekend...

I can see this happening. PP needs some spicing up.
Heck, can see this going down with the RIP in Mercy too. -
Considering I have 13 salvage racks for my personal base, I'd be a fan of an upgrade.

Many of these rocks were my friends. Creatures I've known from sand or pebble. Alas, there will be no more shardlings for we have lost our shard-wives. Even now, we still search for them but we've forgotten what they look like.... -

Nice job, I opened the picture in paint and, unbeknownst to me, the top 4 rows of the crossword were off the screen : p

Quote:Well, I think that assumes the character is in sight, rather than just getting a tell, or someone from your sg pops on, for examples. The first one, you can always do by typing $target while selecting the character you want to send to your leader, if you're targeting Ms. Wonder, $target becomes Ms. Wonder. But the ability to drag and drop names, or words period, would be a welcome addition to ways to better manage things
-
A pair of suggestions for tightening up the UI.
1.) So, just like you can drag an enhancement or power to a chat window, it would be nice if you could do this with player names too. Why? Well, the primary example is when someone other than the team leader tries to recruit someone to the team -- being able to drag and drop the name to the chat window would be handy rather than dealing with spacing and capitalization issues.
2.) For the sake of consistency as well as being helpful, it would be nice if you could drag character name, enh name, and powers into the support submission windows too.
They're Quality of Life issues but if it's feasible, why not go for it? -
Naming Elitists? haha
The funny thing is, there are games far more popular than City of Heroes that use the unique naming system on a per-server basis. I usually dislike using the argument "everyone else is doing it" but, frankly, just about everyone else is. The only notable ones that come to my mind that kind of don't would be Tabula Rasa (still had the same clone last name; cancelled), Sword of the New World (unique family name/surname still required; gone free2play), and CO (the unique global handle, the least elegant workaround of all; no comment).
As it currently stands, unique hero/villain name is the level of granularity currently implemented and, if there's one major lesson mmo developers should know by now, you don't change a fundamental system at the expense of your existing customers to possibly lure in a few more. City of Heroes is here today because of the commitment of its playerbase, the ridiculous number of alts they have, and probably in good part to the identity attached to each and everyone of them. Paragon/NcSoft would be stupid to ever tinker with that as loudly as a few might cry.
Clean-up scripts are great, expanding field name length is very easy too, but no way do you change to non-unique names. -
Expand the name field length from 20 to 30 characters. A surprising number of names come in at 21 characters ( ' :

Quote:Hey, that works for Bayonetta....whom happens to be a witch also....Animated hair could be a new powerset... why not wish for that instead?
You could have a hair whip... and have it do all kinds of neato stuff...
Animated hair on everyone is not as awesome as it seems, I was psyched about it in AoC, but now is just like "meh". If it comes... ok, but it would have been cooler to do something else with the animator guys time, imo.
Congratulations to all involved, glad to know that the expansion is still being worked on ( ' : -
I have to say, I'm surprised by what seems like a huge dropoff in population between freedom and virtue down to justice. With all of my slots full on the first two, I've been looking aroud for a third server to set up shop. The conclusion I've come to is that starting new characters on other servers is painful and people might be better off transferring more...self-sufficient characters to lower pop servers.
Hopefully Going Rogue will give us a few more slots to assign to servers as we wish. -

Quote:Thanks! The wiki should probably link to that for the respective enh's.
edit: or I can go in and add those edits myself ( ' :
