    EXACTLY! Although, I'm pretty sure we aren't the first two players to think of it ( ' ;

Maybe that was the problem? Some trick of the level gating code, since old hazard zones were.
LRT feels a bit like a throwaway t5 power. There was (and still is!) an opportunity to actually make use of those exploration badges to drop people off at specific spots.

Doubling that would mean having to reserve an additional 1Kb for every character that exists on the servers currently, including those from Trial and banned accounts, and redoing all the estimates for "how many more characters can our databse hold before we have to get a bigger HD". It's a lot of work just to let a small segment of players write a little more about their characters.
I was trying to keep it simple. Given the Kotaku 7th anniversary issue referenced 42 million characters created, we're talking....40gb. That might seem like a lot at home, but it's nothing in an enterprise environment, especially when your business is 100% bits and bytes. And, for reference, that calculation is not difficult for a DBA.

Furthemore, if a 1Kb increase in bio is all that is needed to increase attachment to virtual characters and thereby extend subscriptions, it's probably worth looking at.

That goes without saying, yes. Are you trying to suggest that storing/transferring it upon query would be....expensive? If a bio is 1,023 characters, that is effectively 1Kb. Doubling it to 2048 is 2Kb. These are stupid small numbers in today's computing, especially considering the smallest file size in most modern file systems is 4Kb....i.e., there's room in the space reserved to store the bio.
  5. Autumn Path Aura must have gotten a last minute price change -- the email that went out happened to note it as only 80 points.
  6. Thank you Team Spike for a successful run despite the ridiculousness of my evening in terms of both computing and playing issues. The team closed out with 32 defeats of which I realistically had at least 20 of.

As it would turn out, City of Heroes stopped responding as I was zoning into the tunnels. Had we not been on a TF, I likely would have quit for the night right then and there. Scataloni held up for me and then we continued running through the tunnels....I was actually keeping pace with Bullwark for a bit and then the screen went black before the nvidia "display driver has stopped working" message popped.

Getting back into the game, I was already dead as I had blacked out after just passing through a pack of Rikti. Fortunately, I had passed through a door and made it out of aggro radius before blacking out so that when I came to, it was safe enought to pop a bounce back. I managed to wend my way through to the door without any wrong turns, thankfully.

And then it became a matter of juggling my annoyance at the machine with a tinge of guilt for not contributing more and figuring out what the heck was going on. Thankfully, Underhill Victory was asking the questions I was thinking and thus I was able to adapt gameplay (e.g. bonfire isn't so helpful when the tank has nicely herded rikti into a corner as we race to beat the reinforcements : ' )

All in all, I don't think I really found my "game feet" until we started picking off tentacles. I think you guys would have been fine without me, but I'm glad I stayed -- I appreciate the tagalong and, as always, had fun ( ' :

Honestly, it's redefining the field size in the database -- not the end of the world here. Why anyone should protest such a request is beyond me, especially when it's "I don't want to read more". Frankly, giving people the opportunity to make the game more immersive should be encouraged and this is an easy way to do it.

Unfortunately, 3D applications are not able to automatically recover after this occurs and need to be restarted.

    Interesting link, especially this part:
"Ensure that the DirectX graphics application does not run at a low frames per second (FPS) rate. As the FPS decreases, the likelihood of the GPU getting reset increases. If the application is running at 10 FPS or lower and a complex graphics operation is about to start, then a flush can be inserted"
It gives me something new to watch for.
  11. I don't have an answer for you, but I will chime in.

The "nvidia display driver stopped working" is a bug that has been around for a long time time now (I still run with an nvidia 8800gt ssc). I forget when it was introduced, but the odd thing is that I stopped getting it when issue 21 hit. It appears that since this week's patch, I'm getting it quite frequently now. Between it and and running out memory forcing a crash to desktop, playing CoH has gotten quite frustrating. I should also note, that the only other time it comes up is with Champions Online (i.e., this doesn't really feel like a driver issue, but a game engine issue).

People have talked about uninstalling drivers and reinstalling them, there was a registry setting that could be altered that changed the timeout setting before the video reset itself -- I've tried all of those things without success. It may have been my imagination, or just dumb luck, but I find it odd that it seemed to disappear for a short while.

Communication might be key, but when the star holder and six of the eight team members automatically expect something to be done in a way they all consider default, to argue that the onus was not on the minority to make their own wishes clear is pushing things a bit.

To be sure, Wrend and I will both make it a point to communicate clearly how any future tf's will be run, but the saying "When in Rome do as the Romans do" certainly applies here. When one moves to a new country with a different language, the expectation is that one take the time to learn the spoken language, rather than expect others to adapt to them, California being a possible exception to this otherwise universal norm. Likewise the onus is on new players to COH to adapt to the standards and norms here, not the other way around. As a vet player, I'm more than willing to do my part to help educate newcomers, but when my efforts are met with insults and hostility, you can imagine the effect this has on my sense of ambassadorship. For anyone wishing to claim this amounts to "vet elitism" stop hurling hollow epithets and use reason. I've personally helped and taught numerous new players, and have known Wrend to do likewise. To label either of us as such is merely to show one's ignorance of who we are as players and a willingness to make snap judgements.
So, I'm going to chime in here with just a few points even though it's a necro.

First, "vet elitism" may be the wrong term. It's more like "vet privelge" (akin to "white privelge"). By this I mean, that some vets in some instances may just take the game experience for granted as the long-time majority and I think these new players became victims of it. The thing is, benefactors of that privelege are rarely aware of it. Your intentions weren't malicious, but you just assumed your actions were "normal" and everyone should fall into line. The influx of players are a new "class" of player and sorely needed -- they also deserve respect and that upfront communication is important.

Second, that "when in Rome" comment kind of reinforces point 1, but also illustrates a lack of perception about our game. City of Heroes is a wholly different beast from just about every other mmo on the market. Many have tried it, some of us have loved it. But we are different -- among other things, we lack traditional loot, we're instanced, until recently we didn't have an endgame, and we roll LOTS of alts and the game encourages it. The reality is that CoH is a niche game that has thrown its doors open to the mainstream and the mainstream has a far different experience with mmos than what we offer. Education is important and you can't dismiss the experience and assumptions these new people bring in -- we're the odd ones out.

But hey, we ran the event and got the badges! =) So not a horrible way to kill some time while we waited for our Rikti to spawn again.

    My team was:

    Luna de Lumiere
    Cold Satisfaction
    Baznon
    Sa-lt
    King Sac
    Pep-per
    Uncle Bramble
    Angeliscar

We finished in 1:14:47 with 2 deaths. We would have been closer to the one hour mark if it wasn't for the zone invasion.

There will not be a scheduled event for next Monday night cause I have plans with my family for Halloween. There is some talk of Trick or Treating amongst the regulars if you'd like to log on.

We'll return in 2 weeks (November 7th) for the dreaded Abandoned Sewer Trial. You must be level 38 to join, so get out there and level if you're not in range.

    Thanks!
The horde ran into this same problem at this time last year -- Team Spike/Ecru had their KR hunt held up by a zombie event, but I think we may have actually ran it in just about the same time (although i don't have a screenie to confirm). Anyway, was a good run and I appreciate being able to sneak on at the last moment ( ' :

In the past month and a half, we've released costume sets, power sets, a travel power, micro-content releases (the Signature Stories), and more.

The item(s) per week had different price points and targeted different types of play styles. Since we released the Halloween Event and the Halloween Costume Bundle, it made sense to release the convention powers now while all players could have fun with trick-or-treating.

With next week's release, we're aiming to have a little bit more fun with some stuff that compliments our current in-game event.
    Sounds good, I appreciate the response ( ' :

  18. I <3 knockup and knockdown, but just really, really like knockback as a friend.

I do think it generally gets a raw deal, particularly for the self-important aoe min-maxers looking to trash 16 mobs at once that come here to complain about it -- their voices ring the loudest and mostly your hear the "What" ("knockback sucks") rather than the "Why" ("because KB'ers rob me of the limelight of being uber in my own eyes")

KB, KD, KU is such a unique game mechanic, I really hope it never changes.

Would you mind explaining why building towards enhanced regen is pointless?
